The first of three auctions dedicated to the outstanding majolica collection of Ed Flower (1929-2022) and his wife, Marilyn (1930-2017), will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 23, online and live in the Holiday Inn ballroom at 1750 Sumneytown Pike in Kulpsville, Pa. Two of the pieces in the auction lineup could easily take top lot honors. The first is an iconic Minton Majolica cobalt teapot, modeled as a flat iron with a frieze of mice to the sides and a large, white cat wrapped around the handle looking down at a mouse holding a carrot to form the handle of the lid, 7.5 inches tall. It is estimated at $20,000$25,000.

The second is a rare and monumental Hugo Lonitz majolica model of a hawk, created around 1875, with glass eyes, perched on a rocky ground with ferns and branches on an entwined branch base, 24 inches in height. The only other known example was sold at Christie’s in New York in 2011; it realized $56,250. The one in the auction has an estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

Lot 1070 is a pair of majolica Renaissance Revival vases, ca. 1860, probably exhibited at the London International Exhibition of 1862 and exquisitely painted by Thomas Kirkby after Raphael’s ceiling frescos in The Stanza Della Signatura, Apostolic Chapel, Vatican, Rome, depicting Theology, Justice, Poetry, and Philosophy, 22 inches tall (est. $15,000-$20,000).

Two lots carry estimates of $12,000-$15,000. One is a George Jones & Sons majolica cobalt-blue and turquoise-ground ‘Sea and Sky’ cheese keeper and stand, ca. 1878, cylindrical in shape with conch shell and seaweed knob, the side molded with a continuous sky and underwater view, including seagulls, hermit crab, fish and other aquatic life.

A rare pair of George Jones tulip and butterfly candlesticks, ca. 1875, each one modeled as an upright tulip and large green leaves forming the body, with a blossom forming the candle holders, 9 inches tall, should make $6,000-$9,000. Also, a lovely Delphin Massier majolica jardiniere, ca. 1880, designed as a large duck with chicks beside a tree trunk forming the flower holder, on a grassy ground base, 22.5 inches tall, has an estimate of $5,000$8,000.

Another lot worthy of mention is a whimsical Royal Worcester Japanese-style posy vase pair, probably designed by James Hadley, ca. 1875, modeled as a tortoise with a monkey on his back, the monkey with a frog on his shoulders, 9 inches tall. It should sell for $2,000-$3,000.

Several pieces in the Flower collection were recently part of a large Majolica Mania Exhibition that was launched in New York City in the fall of 2021, traveled to the Walters Museum in Baltimore in early 2022 and finished at Stoke on Trent in the United Kingdom in fall 2022. Only the

finest pieces of majolica made their way into the show.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about the Flower collection is the fact that the couple didn’t begin collecting majolica until much later in life, Ed at about age 60.Prior to that, Ed collected other things: coins, stamps and books as a youth, then later on American Impressionist oil paintings, early 20th century American prints and netsuke.

The Old West Show has always been known for its premier dealers, and this year was no exception. The 2023 roster included such businesses as Manitou Galleries (Cheyenne, Wyo.), Toh-Atin Gallery (Durango, Colo.), Territorial Indian Arts (Scottsdale, Ariz.), and John Molloy Gallery (New York City) and an all-star lineup of specialty dealers that included Joe Fionda (Lufkin, Texas), Mary Nyholm-Vidano (Niwot, Colo.) and Flying Tiger Antiques (Apache Junction, Ariz.). A number of wellestablished Santa Fe dealers also set up at this year’s event. They included Sherwood’s Spirit of America, James Compton Gallery, Brant Mackley Gallery, Turkey Mountain Traders, and Rio Bravo Trading.

Attendance was strong on all three days, with more than 1,000 visitors passing through the doors of the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. It was especially busy on day one, which was earlyentry day. Guests were eager for a first look and first opportunity to buy from the show’s blue-chip vendors. Many of the early-bird shoppers returned on consecutive days to make sure they hadn’t missed anything. “And we had the usual rush of Sunday afternoon bargain hunters, who were just as happy as the dealers whose loads they helped to lighten,” said show founder Brian Lebel.

“All of the dealers I spoke to were thrilled with their weekend sales and signed up on the spot for the January 2024 Old West Show in Las Vegas,” continued Lebel. “A few of them told me it was the best show they ever had, and many said they personally bought almost as much as they sold. I love to hear that, because whenever there are heavy dealer-to-dealer sales, it means vendors have brought a lot of fresh, high-end merchandise.”

In addition to the brisk action on the sales floor, Lebel observed a pleasing diversity amongst the shoppers. “Every year we notice more and more young people coming to our shows. It’s especially gratifying to see younger folks taking the time to talk to the dealers and learn about their merchandise. It says to me that

Studded jackets and handbeaded vests were among the tempting items of vintage apparel offered by Lucky Star Gallery of Reno, Nev.

Someone wise once said, “What is old is new again.” This quote serves the antiques and collectibles trade quite well and was enlivened again on July 21, 2023, when the highly anticipated movie adaption of Barbie was released in theaters. The movie featured an all-star cast and massive budget, with the lead role of Barbie being played by Margot Robbie. The movie scored a box office hit and is still going strong. Its success is in stark contrast, however, to public perception of the toy line on which the movie is based over the past few years. Barbie was launched in 1959 and quickly became one of the hottest selling dolls ever created. Mattel, the company who owns the iconic toy line, would become a successful toy conglomerate on the success of this one product alone. Mattel would then find success with Hot Wheels cars and score a huge win in the 1980s with their Masters

It should be noted that Mattel was not immune to making mistakes. The Mattel Intellivision video game system that was released to compete against the Atari 2600 VCS video game system was initially a success, but the company kept pouring money into it and attempted to turn it into a full-fledged computer called the Aquarius, which failed miserably. Still, by the 1990s and the turn of the new century, Mattel was comfortably positioned as one of the biggest toy companies in the world. Unfortunately, this would be about the same time that the entire toy market would start to change.

The new millennium would bring about massive advancements in electronic entertainment, and it was around this same time that most major traditional toy companies started to struggle. Children no longer just wanted action figures and traditional toys. They wanted Nintendo and Playstation, which were expensive. Action figures could be had by most parents on a budget, but video games and systems typically cost hundreds of dollars, and parents had to choose wisely as to what to put under the Christmas tree. Even Lego was racking up record losses around this time and would only be saved by signing a lucrative licensing deal to create sets based on the popular “Star Wars”

franchise. Lego “Star Wars” would turn the struggling plastic block maker around and create a blueprint to create licensed sets going forward. The plan worked, and Lego is right now the number one toy company in the world, beating out both Mattel and Hasbro.

In 2001, the Barbie toy line would be challenged for dominance by a new up and coming rival called Bratz that was created by a former Mattel employee and released by MGA Entertainment. The Bratz dolls were edgy and full of attitude, something that Barbie was not, and parents groups noticed. Mattel quickly took costly legal action against their creator, which led to the Bratz brand being relaunched several different times over the following few years. It was clear to see that Barbie was no longer the cool doll that everyone had to have.

In the collecting world, Barbie has had its ups and downs. The first Barbie doll ever released commands a hefty price to this day. Thanks to the success of the movie, prices for this doll are expected to rise. That said, Mattel succumbed to mass-produced scarcity tactics in the 1980s and ’90s by producing limited-edition holiday Barbies and the like. Today, most of these products have very little collectability on the secondary market, with few exceptions. There are some sought-after Barbie dolls from the 1980s, and these particular pieces are seeing renewed interest on the secondary market due to the success of the Barbie movie. This all begs the question as to how long can this last? Just ask any comic book collector how the massive success of the Marvel comic book movies

affects prices for back issue key vintage comic books, and your answer lies there. But how many more Barbie movies can Mattel possibly make before audiences tire of the trend? Marvel comic book movies have suffered a serious slowdown these past several years as audiences tire of all the new overdone movies and plot tropes, and, let’s be honest, the Barbie universe is nowhere near as diverse and complex as the Marvel Universe. Still, it is nice to see a lot of these iconic franchises come to life on the silver screen, and make no mistake, Mattel already has plans to inject new life into its aging Hot Wheels franchise and even its dying Masters of the Universe with new live action movies of their own. That is assuming fans can forget the horrible live action Masters of the Universe film that was released in the 1980s. Who knows? Maybe the future holds that Barbie and He-Man

August Camping Sales Display At Haddon Heights

The special sales display at the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will move from the beach to the woods with an August theme of “At the Camp.”

Camping can take many forms, from family camping to scout troop camping to hunting and fishing camping. And the vintage collectibles associated with camping can take many forms, too.

In the sales display, shoppers will find vintage insulated coolers and jugs, wicker picnic baskets and canteens. There will be Boy and Girl Scout memorabilia related to camping and ephemera such as books, booklets, postcards, and photos. Vintage fishing reels and lures will be of interest to collectors, as well.

Anyone with memories of the fun and relaxing days spent at camp will enjoy this nostalgic display, and anyone

In conclusion, it would be wise for Barbie collectors to consider selling into this market if they can turn a profit on some of these collectibles. It is also advised that collectors resist wanting to buy these items while demand for them is at all-time highs. Once the movie leaves the box office and the next big thing is in the forefront of collectors’ hearts and minds, most of these increased prices will return to

normal. Until that time, I always remember my favorite quote about investing in antiques and collectibles: “The trend is your friend, until the end, when it bends.”

Bruneau & Co.’s Summer Pop Culture Auction Set For Aug. 8

Sale To Feature Rare X-Men Comics, Pokemon Booster Boxes And Goudey Baseball Cards

A copy of Marvel Comics “X-Men #1” from September 1963, two “Pokémon” booster boxes from 1999, Goudey baseball cards for star players from the 1930s, and original cover art for Drift Marlo #1 from 1962 will all come up for bid in Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers’ Summer Pop Culture Auction slated for Tuesday, Aug. 8, beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

Also titled a Comic, Sports, TCG (Trading Card Games) and Toy Auction, the 478-lot sale will offer an eclectic mix of comics, sports, toys, and associated collectibles from collections across New England, online and live in the Bruneau & Co. gallery at 63 Fourth Ave. in Cranston, R.I.

“I am so excited to offer an eclectic sale of comics, toys

and sports, which is one of the largest catalogs we have produced for pop culture in a while, as we’ve been busy with single-owner collections and museum collections,” said Travis Landry, Bruneau & Co.’s director of pop culture.

“I’m anxious to see what the early baseball cards, including the Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio cards, do in today’s market. Also, the group lots were a lot of fun to sort. I’m excited for the collectors to see them cross the block,” added Landry.

The Goudey cards aren’t graded highly, but that will open the door for collectors looking to add Goudey examples to their collections in any condition. They include a 1933 Babe Ruth card #133, graded BVG 1 Poor (est. $3,000$5,000); a 1933 Lou Gehrig card #92, graded BVG 1 Poor (est. $1,000-$1,500); and a 1938 Joe DiMaggio #250 Heads-Up rookie card, graded BVG 1.5 Fair (est. 1,000-$1,500). All of the Goudey cards are individually housed in BVG cases.

The copy of Marvel Comics “X-Men #1” from September 1963 features the origin and first appearance of the X-Men and Magneto (est. $8,000$12,000). The book is graded CGC 3.5, with off-white pages, and is presented in a CGC case. Also, a copy of Marvel Comics “Amazing Spider-Man #121” from June 1973, featuring the “death” of Gwen Stacy and an appearance by the Green Goblin, graded CGC 9.6, with white pages and in a CGC case, should finish at $1,800-$2,400.

Over the past several years, the collections at Historic Odessa have undergone careful examination and interpretation. Relatively few historic sites have received this level of investigative treatment. Additionally, several of the hitherto-unpublished objects relate to others already in the decorative and fine arts lexicon.

Corbit and Wilson Family Collections Shed Light on History of Odessa

This well-documented group of family objects provides an intimate glimpse into the daily lives of members of the Corbit and Wilson families in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and sheds light on the history of Odessa, Del., and the larger region.

Particularly strong holdings of furniture made by noted Odessa cabinetmaker John Janvier and his talented sons and nephew allow informative contrasts with products made in Delaware, Philadelphia, and elsewhere.

(1769) houses, built on adjoining lots by a tanner and a merchant and now maintained by the Historic Odessa Foundation. Subsequent generations valued and preserved the two houses and many furnishings.

The Wilson house opened in 1923 as the first historic house museum in Delaware. The Corbit house remained in family hands until H. Rodney Sharp bought it in 1938 to preserve it. Furniture owned in the family of John Janvier was added in the 1970s, and the Foundation has continued to acquire Corbit and Wilson family furnishings as well as locally made furniture in the years since.
