The weekend’s auction was a blockbuster event, with more than 1,700 bidders on www.HA.com vying for the chance to own some of cinema’s most elusive and cherished advertisements. “The sale was very active,” said Grey Smith, Heritage Auctions’ director of Vintage Posters. “A large

This rare poster for the 1933 horror classic “The Invisible Man” scared up a strong $228,000.
This poster for 1927’s “Metropolis” was a big hit. Advertising its initial U.S. release and depicting the film’s towering skyscrapers, it realized $66,000.

number of bidders participated, there were strong results overall, and some records set.” Most of the weekend’s offerings exceeded pre-auction estimates, among them the Swedish one-sheet for “Casablanca,” which nearly tripled its pre-event estimate when it sold for $55,000. Indeed, “Casablanca’s” enduring appeal resulted, too, in the sale of two chairs from Rick’s Café Américain, which sold for $78,000, more than 10 times the estimate. And a record was set for the most ever paid for a “Casablanca” lobby card, going for $33,600. Director Fritz Lang’s masterpieces garnered some of the weekend’s highest bidding and frantic action. The German poster for Lang’s 1931 noir “M,” in which Peter Lorre gave his greatest performance, opened bidding at $31,000 and, after a spirited back-and-forth between online bidders, closed at $108,000, a record price for this piece. Classic Shaker Sewing Table Stitches Up A Big Win At Morphy’s $3.2 Million Fine And Decorative Arts Auction Crafted Ca. 1840 Dropleaf Table Of Mixed Woods, Attributed To Hancock Community Elder David Terry, Commands $98,400 The spotlight may have been shining on a stellar array of art glass, jewelry and watches at Morphy’s July 14 and 15 Fine and Decorative Arts Auction, but it was an unlikely “dark horse,” a ca. 1840 Shaker sewing table, that stitched up the top price at the $3.2 million sale in central Pennsylvania. An unapologetically simple form, the seven-drawer drop-leaf table of mixed woods likely came from the Shaker community at Hancock, Mass. It was attributed to Elder David Terry, who is known to have crafted similar tables; however, there was some speculation amongst experts that it might have come from the boys’ workshop at Hancock. A published example in “Shaker Furniture: The Craftsmanship of an American Communal Sect” by Andrews & Andrews, 1937, Yale Press, the table was entered in the sale with a $5,000-$10,000 estimate, but aggressive bidding sent it soaring to $98,400. Fifty-four exquisite Tiffany Studios leaded and stainedglass lamps illuminated the gallery during the preview. Among the rare, finely pedigreed beauties on display was a table lamp in the lush Clematis pattern. Decorated with a dense mix of all-over blue, purple and pastel clematis blooms against a blue/gray/purple trellis and warm sunset background, it was signed both on the shade and the patinated bronze base. Opening at $40,000, it dominated the Tiffany lineup, selling for $73,800. An original plaster model for Frederick Remington’s (American, 1861-1909) “The Mountain Man” was completed in 1903 and cast by 1907 at New York’s Roman Bronze Works foundry using the lost-wax technique. Standing 29 inches high and signed “Copyright by Frederick Remington,” it previously crossed the auction

This ca. 1840 Shaker dropleaf sewing table composed of butternut, cherry, pine and possibly basswood, probably from the Shaker community of Hancock, Mass., attributed to family elder David Terry, attracted 69 bids and sold for $98,400 against an estimate of $5,000-$10,000.

block in 1988 at Guernsey’s as part of “The Roman Bronze Works Collection.” At Morphy’s July event, it sold within estimate for $61,500. From a stunning collection of Amphora ceramics, a rare “Spider Lady” vase embodied Art Nouveau high style with its applied-jeweled portrait of a serene lady wearing an elaborate butterfly headdress. Additional decoration includes a jeweled spider and webbing, a gilt crucifix necklace and other tastefully executed gilt accents. The vase is illustrated in the books “Monsters and Maidens: Collectors Edition” (Vreeland) and “The House of Amphora” (Scott). Against an estimate of $9,000-$12,000, it clinched a winning bid of $28,290, an auction record for the form. Another record-setter was the ca. 1900 Amphora Dragon vase similar to examples seen in the Vreeland and Scott references. Estimated at $6,000-$8,000, the 18-inch vessel in near-mint condition defied expectations and rose to $40,590. Part II of this elite Amphora collection will be offered in Morphy’s December Fine and Decorative Arts Auction. An appealing 1880 Gorham Japanese-style tobacco box of sterling silver on richly oxidized copper featured three chased figures of crabs around the body of the vessel and an additional cast and chased crab atop the lid. The whimsically decorated container drew 23 bids and sold for $10,455 against an estimate of $4,000-$6,000. From the earliest period of Queen Victoria’s reign, a ca. 1840-50 narwhal walking stick

Let me begin by saying I am not a prognosticator about the economic future of the country or the planet. I leave that to all the folks who are constantly blogging and writing about how it is either a moment of great opportunity or time to hide under your bed. I am simply offering a few observations on the antiques world. I have been out to some of my favorite antiques malls in the last couple of weeks and must confess to being depressed at what I see. When the malls reopened, the booths seemed fine, albeit a bit dusty, but now I am watching the hemorrhage of the dealers. I can usually tell the
long memories, and so a chance to acquire a oncemissed item is often too good to pass up. My sense as well is that the online market is very strong. During the lull I spent a lot of time with favorite dealers who have an online presence. The response by online dealers has not been consistent. Some post new treasures every day, while others, particularly the military dealers, took a long time to realize that people were at home and looking for updates. Most now seem to grasp that posting as often as possible ensures that more people are looking at your website. I will say that a few military dealers have tried, I gather unsuccessfully, to repost their existing stock as newly arrived. Again, collectors have a long memory, so not a smart idea.

levels of mall dealers from the casual hobbyist to the large dealer using the mall to sell excess, and I have to say that the shutdown seems to have impacted all levels of the trade. Some of my favorite dealers are now gone, and that makes me sad for sure. Another observation is that with new restrictions in malls about access and social distancing, furniture is being sold at give-away prices. This may be truer in some areas than others, but lots of aisleblocking pieces seem to be now offered at a fraction of their worth. The good news is that I observed things selling. Beyond the furniture tagged out, I noted a fair number of smalls heading for the door with happy customers. My guess is that there are many like me who have been suffering from collector withdrawal these last few months. I do not think the antiques market is dead, and certainly reports from some auction houses is that strong prices are being paid for good quality items. The aging collectors who are now selling their lifetime assemblages are bringing back to the market many great items that have not been seen in decades. Collectors have

Dan Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions, has announced the appointment of Dan Mackel to the full-time position of firearms specialist. Formerly a consultant to Morphy’s, Mackel joins the formidable team of experts that produces the company’s Firearms, Edged Weapons, Armor and Militaria sales year-round. A native of Bedford County, Pa., Mackel comes from a long line of firearms aficionados. “I’ve been around guns all my life,” he said. “My adopted grandparents owned a very fine Kentucky rifle collection, and my grandmother, Edith G. Cooper Wagner, wrote a book about it in 1977, titled
‘The Kentucky Rifle and Me.’ When I was a boy, my dad, Arlen Mackel, would take me to gun shows and to visit friends’ collections. I always paid attention.” A self-described “extreme history buff,” Mackel studied geology at Penn State University, graduating in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in Earth and Mineral Sciences. For many years, he lived and worked on the family’s dairy farm but also operated French Creek Arms, an antique firearms shop in Meadville, Pa. “It started out as a hobby, then became a professional business,” said Mackel, who has a federal firearms license. In his new position, Mackel is tasked with cataloging double-barrel shotguns, Kentucky rifles, militaria, and a category for which he has recently developed a great passion, British muskets. He will also assist in bringing in new inventory. Mackel said he accepted the full-time position at Morphy’s because he had spent two years with the firm as a consultant, which gave him the ability to observe firsthand how Morphy’s operates. “Dan runs a really well respected auction house, with integrity and honesty. I would not have accepted the position if I didn’t feel This is Morphy Auctions’ newly that way about it,” said appointed firearms specialist, Dan Mackel. “He has conducted Mackel. Early Postcards Of The Lion That Started A Zoo By Christopher Moor King Dick ruled Wellington Zoo in New Zealand for 14 years. The yearling lion king was the first of the animals to arrive at Newtown Park, taking up residence in June 1906, a few days before the death of Premier Richard John Seddon. He was named after Seddon, receiving the statesman’s nickname of King Dick. Seddon, a man of leonine qualities, led the government that granted New Zealand women the vote in 1893 and introduced means tested old age pensions for those age 65 and over in 1898, two social reforms that were world firsts. Dick was one year old when gifted to Wellington city by Bostock and Wombwell’s Circus and Menagerie. He was born in South Africa on Feb. 28, 1905, and raised by Marco, a liontamer at Wirth’s Circus. King Dick was among the
most beloved animals in the city during his lifetime. Plans to mate Dick with a young lioness fell through in 1909. The zoo returned her to Wirth’s Circus. A new two-compartment lion house was under construction and was not ready yet for her occupancy. Early in 1911, Mary, another lioness, joined King Dick in his enclosure. They watched one another through the bars of their cages, deliberately kept apart for a few days in case they mauled each other. Soon after the divider was removed, the pair showed they got along very well. Mary gave birth to two cubs, George and Maud, in February 1913. George would die from pneumonia in June 1914. Twin sister Maud was mated with Briton, a lion loaned to the zoo, and had four cubs by him in 1915. Her mother, Mary, had also been on loan to the zoo, and seemed set for

Wellingtonians raised £100 ($200) to purchase her from the circus and keep their favorite animal family together. Sadly, Dick was euthanised at the age of 15 years on Dec. 18, 1920, after he had lost the use of his rear legs. His body went to a taxidermist, where he was mounted and stuffed for display at the Newtown Museum. Dick’s mounted form then went into the collection of the Dominion Museum, now the Museum of Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa) after the Newtown Museum’s closure in the 1930s. The mounted King Dick is now on loan from Te Papa to the Wellington Museum, where he can be seen in The Attic

McClymont, not Zak (Joseph Zachariah), a Wellington photographer, as previously attributed. Arguably the most frequently seen postcard image of King Dick today is from a photo by S C (Sydney Charles) Smith. Tanner Bros featured the shot of Dick standing in front of a large ball on a colored Maoriland series postcard (no. 317) from ca. 1913. The same photo was used on an oval framed sepia card and a green postcard with a rectangular frame. Printing these postcards in the German state of Saxony would have ended after the declaration of WWI on July 28, 1914. Tanners’ no. 96 has King S.C. An atypical example amongst the landscapes is a portrait-style card of a sitting Dick photographed and published by Wellingtonian Harold Plimmer, ca. 1909. Tanner Bros had been the most prolific publishers of King Dick-theme postcards. With an office in London and postcards printed in Saxony (Germany) pre-WWI, Tanners’ publications appear to have been sold outside of New Zealand, as King Dick postcards were sent to loved ones by Allied POWs captured by the Germans during the first world war. The oldest postcard discovered while researching this
