Cordier Auctions Hits Home Run With George Ruth Card Rare Card Sells For $51,600 FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11, 2020 • VOL. 51, NO. 37

Witman Holds Auction For Ned And The Late Gwen Foltz Strawser Adam And Eve Carving (1986) Brings $1,622.50 By Karl Pass Witman Auctioneers Inc. of Manheim, Pa., are five years into holding sales on behalf of potter Ned Foltz and his late wife, Gwen Foltz. Ned Foltz is an active redware potter in Reinholds, Pa., and has a full show schedule. His shows are held at his studio/shop at 225 N. Peartown Road. Visit www.foltzpottery.com for his event schedule or further information.

David Cordier, founder and owner of Cordier Auctions and Appraisals, in Harrisburg, Pa., was confident that the E121 American Caramel George Ruth card sold on Aug. 15 would do well. “It was graded 7, or nearmint, by PSA. According to PSA this is the only card of this version in the population with this grade. The next highest are graded 3.” Finding comparable prices for these rare cards can prove difficult; considering the printing defect to the front of the card, the expectation was for it to bring $8,000 to $10,000. “When we logged into the auction Saturday morning, it was at $20,000, and we knew that something exciting was happening,” followed up Cordier. When bidding ended, the virtual hammer fell at $43,000 ($51,600 with the 20-percent buyer’s premium). The 367-lot auction was primarily comprised of a single owner collection from the estate of Lee Noblett of Halifax, Pa. Other noteworthy lots include a E90-2 American Caramel Honus Wagner PSA1 that sold for $3,840 and a T206

Complete PSA 10 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Set And High-Grade Sports Kings Thorpe, Ruth And Cobb Soar Heritage Auctions’ twoday Summer Sports Card event, which ran July 30 and 31, was a hot sale. By the time the final buzzer sounded, 1,971 bidders pushed the auction’s tally past the $9.4 million mark. “Last weekend’s sale checks in as our largest Summer Sports Card event to date,” said Chris Ivy, Heritage Auctions’ director of Sports Auctions. “And we are very excited to be launching our Summer Platinum Night event on the heels of this amazing result, as the August event includes hundreds of incredibly significant, museum-worthy pieces. The strength of the sports market in the midst of a global pandemic speaks to the stability of the market, with vintage trading cards leading the charge.” The National Basketball Association’s return to the

hardwood just happened to coincide with the first night of Heritage Auctions’ Summer Sports Card event. And right on time, the 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Cards and Stickers complete set, all graded PSA Gem Mint 10, realized $216,000. No doubt Michael Jordan’s two cards in that set helped push it past its preauction estimate. All by itself, an unopened box of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball cards, containing 36 unopened packs, sold for $90,000. Three of the Summer Sports Card event’s biggest hits were offerings from the gorgeous 1933 Sports Kings set, manufactured by the Goudey Gum Company and considered something of a risk at the time since multisports sets had fallen out of favor. This bubblegum-scented set is more or less the wellspring of the modern sports card artistry and industry, and only a handful of cards of the caliber sold over the weekend are known to exist. Look no further than the Jim Thorpe card from that collection, which is graded PSA Mint 9 and sold for $138,000; there’s Thorpe’s majestic image hovering over a scrum of footballers. Ty Cobb’s Sports King Card, likewise graded PSA Mint 9, sold for only slightly less at $132,000. That’s the same amount realized for Babe Ruth’s Sports King Card, graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. A Red Grange PSA Mint 9, This Jim Thorpe card, graded PSA the highest grade ever awardMint 9, sold for $138,000. ed this card, sold for $81,000. And a Knute Rockne Sports Kings also graded Mint 9 realized $63,000. Another big score from the Summer Sports Card event was an unopened box of 1979 O-Pee-Chee Hockey cards, which sold for $108,000. No telling how many Wayne Gretzky rookie cards might be in there. Just one of the Great One’s O-Pee-Chee rookie cards, graded PSA Mint 9, with only two higher known to exist, sold for half that, at $54,000. Not surprisingly, one of the oldest collections in the auction proved one of the Ty Cobb’s Sports King Card, graded most valuable, the T201 Mecca Double Folder baseball cards PSA Mint 9, sold for $132,000.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics The Sports Card Market Finally Hits A Home Run, But Is It Really Different From What Came Before?

NOWN! OPE

on the new stuff. That, however, is harder than it seems today because, as one collector put it, “The possibility of pulling a $10,000-plus card by buying an overpriced pack of modern cards is just too much to ignore.” It is this type of mindset that new collectors and would-be speculators should avoid. In conclusion, I don’t doubt the reemergence of the sports card collecting market. I do, however, caution speculators and collectors from once again focusing on modern era cards while some pockets of key vintage cards

are almost experiencing a small buyer’s market at present time. Still, it is nice to see sports card collectors batting a thousand at present time, especially given the fact that most current professional sporting events have no shortage of challenges.

being able to buy low and sell high is what success in most markets comes down to, and the antiques and collectibles trade is no different. Most of these articles are very well written and somewhat factual, but they are written in some cases by market manipulators and market makers. These sophisticated investors have a bias and financial incentive to promote the items they are actively investing in. Another problem with the modern era sports card market is that currently, modern era sports cards are fetching higher returns for collectors than the coveted vintage market. We have all heard about a Honus Wagner card selling for over a million dollars at auction, but it is important to note that six or seven figure vintage cards make up only a small fraction of the vintage sports card collecting marketplace as a whole. Most of the vintage market consists of a lot of four to five figure cards. In theory, these coveted vintage cards should be better financial investments overall than most modern era products, but thanks to manufacturers creating one-of-a-kind autographed cards and burying them in packs, the market is completely backwards, more than most other collecting categories. Collectors and speculators may be better off buying vintage key cards and taking a wait-and-see attitude

Hopping into my flashy new time machine and going back to the year 1995, there are certain truths I have to contend with knowing what I know now. The first is that my hairstyle in 1995 really needs some work. The second is that my high school crush isn’t going to age all that well. And lastly, the massive speculative bubble that appeared in a lot of pop culture based collecting categories at the time was finally starting to dissipate, but, no worries, as word on the collectibles beat is that stuffed miniature toys with cute little names are going to become the next big thing (Beanie Babies, anyone?). It was at this time that baseball card collecting was finally starting to die out as collectors and speculators were tiring of all the tricks that manufacturers and dealers were using at the time to keep the money flowing. Multiple companies at this time were making sports cards, from the mainstays of the industry like Topps, to several second tier companies like Donruss and Fleer, to newer manufacturers like Score and Upper Deck. On top of the standard cards these companies were producing, many of these manufacturers started to rely on limited-edition items and gimmicks to ensure hefty profits year after year. When collectors finally realized what was happening and that none of these new products were increasing in price year after year, the bottom dropped out, and a lot of these companies went bankrupt or exited the trade altogether. This had a lasting effect on the sports card market that would linger for

phenomenon, and it will never change, so let’s just accept it. So what’s changed, you may be asking? The first change that makes this market different from what transpired before is the fact that the manufacturers seem to have learned from some of their mistakes from the past. And luckily, there are fewer manufacturers as well. Companies are no longer believed to be lying about print runs, production numbers and the like. And while there are some instances of manufacturers and distributors holding back supply to local shops and collectors, this occurs in every industry in the modern massproduced collectibles trade. These manufacturers are also not lying about the number of limited edition items they are making. Instead, they are literally releasing one-of-a-kind autographed cards in blind packs that can be seen selling by some lucky collectors for tens of thousands of dollars each on the secondary market. Never before has this been tried before, but it appears to be working at present time. Simply google “sports card investing,” and you will be greeted with a plethora of articles and the like all telling you how great the hobby is. And to be fair, it is. However, most of these articles gloss over the glaring truth that knowledge and

decades. Flash forward to present day (side note, for anyone still stuck in 1995, please research the word “pandemic” before coming to the year 2020. It may just come in handy), and it is almost like the lessons learned back during the speculative boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s never even happened. In fact, on the surface it would appear that any sports card manufacturer in the market today has doubled down on what was happening in the market back then. We have limited-edition cards, autographed cards that are one of kind, cards and collectibles made from gameworn jerseys or even gameused equipment. And, best of all, we have a plethora of third-party grading companies willing to take a high powered magnifying lens to your treasures to see if they are truly gem mint, for a price, of course. At first glance you would be forgiven for thinking that today’s modern era sports card marketplace is similar to what was happening back during the boom period. You would, however, be correct if your analysis of today’s marketplace features the return of the same speculators who made the previous speculative bubble so dangerous. People are drawn to financial speculation in the collectibles trade. This is not a new

Adam Smith’s “Wealth Of Nations Leads Fiddlers Antiques Show In Nashville Fine Books And Manuscripts Auction Bought By Puchsteins Record Set For “Snow White Sketchbook Signed By Disney

By Tom O’Hara

Swann Galleries’ sale of Fine Books and Manuscripts on July 30 boasted high prices across categories, with early printed books leading the sale, two records being recorded for literature, and autograph material from world leaders garnering attention. A strong offering of special early printed books and manuscripts led the sale by value. Senior specialist Devon Eastland, who recently joined Swann, noted, “First editions of Adam Smith’s ‘Wealth of Nations’ and other book collecting classics are still toplining today’s market in early books, but new areas of collecting also yield competitive bidding and high hammer prices. Smith’s “An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, 1776, descended from William Alexander and bearing his inscription, brought $125,000, going to a private collector, besting a $70,000 to $90,000 estimate. Other strong results include a 15th-century illuminated “Book of Hours in Flemish earning $23,750, and Gerrit de Veer’s 1598 illustrated journal of ill-fated Arctic adventures went for $27,500. “The association copy of Kenelm Digby’s ‘Mathematical Magick’ did an impressive auction room trick, selling for $5,000 on a $600 to $800 estimate range. What may have persuaded bidders to keep their paddles in the air was a Shakespearean association. Manuscripts appeal to collectors and dealers alike for their beauty, the importance of content, and uniqueness, concluded Eastland of the selection. The literature portion of the sale proved successful with a 1938 sketchbook for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, signed by Walt Disney with 12 tipped-in color plates. The classic children’s tale brought a record for the issue at $22,500. A deluxe limitededition of Jack Kerouac’s “Doctor Sax, 1959, brought a record for one of the 26 lettered signed copies at $9,100. Also of note was a copy of “Ulysses, 1922, by James Joyce, number 708 of 750

The Hustler: Chalk Up Some Classic Movie Memorabilia

An original eight-card lobby set sold for $836.50.

The film’s original 136-page script sold for $597.50. Newman’s dining room table at home, and the two men would practice for hours. Newman became quite good, eventually challenging his nemesis in the film, Jackie Gleason, to a game of pocket billiards, fifty count. Gleason, once a real-life pool hustler back in his native Brooklyn, accepted the offer, with $50 as the agreed-on stakes. “He got to break the balls,” Gleason later said. “I then ran 50 balls straight. He never got a chance to chalk his cue. The bastard got even with me, though. Next day he paid me off with a jar filled with 5,000 pennies.” Budgeted at $2 million, “The Hustler” was filmed entirely on location in New York City over the course of six weeks. Two of the movie’s principal shooting locales were McGirr’s and Ames Billiard Academy, a pair of gritty, now-defunct pool halls where much of the action takes place. Note the ironic sign crookedly hanging at Ames in the film, “No Gambling Allowed,” with an old, faded poster nearby touting the exploits of world champion billiards player Willie Mosconi, who performs many of the picture’s trick shots for Paul Newman. “The Hustler” chronicles the life of the fictional “Fast” Eddie Felson, a young pool aficionado from Oakland, Calif., who yearns to be the number one player in the world. Standing in his way is the dapper Minnesota Fats, the reigning king of straight pool, who, according to one of his most ardent supporters, hasn’t been beaten in 15 years.

Following the hustle and fleecing of a hapless bartender at the Homestead Bar & Grill, Eddie and his partner, Charlie Burns, head to New York City, where they look up Minnesota Fats at Ames pool hall, which Eddie immediately christens “the Church of the Good Hustler.” Here Eddie takes on the venerable Minnesota Fats in a marathon pool session under the watchful gaze of professional gambler Bert Gordon, winning and then subsequently losing a small fortune.

Eddie later hooks up with Sarah Packard, a troubled, hard-drinking woman whom he meets at a bus station bar. The two find common ground in their misery, drowning their sorrows while Eddie contemplates his next move. After parting ways with Charlie, Eddie tries to do some hustling on his own. At a riverfront dive called Arthur’s Pool Hall, Eddie is confronted by four toughs following his fleecing of a young, local pool hustler. “Why, you’re a pool shark, boy, a real pool shark,” one of the men sneers. “We got no use for pool sharks here.” The hoods then take Eddie into the bathroom where they proceed to break both of his thumbs. While on the mend, Eddie meets up with Bert Gordon once more, signing on with the gambler as his financial backer and taking his pool act on the road. In Louisville, Ky., during Derby Week, Eddie plays wealthy James Findley at the latter’s mansion, eventually taking him for $12,000 in a marathon series of billiards. Following Sarah’s suicide

The two wizards then go at each other at a cool $3,000 per game, with Eddie shooting the best pool of his life. “The Hustler” premiered in Washington, D.C., in Continued on page 8

In 1961, Robert Rossen’s “The Hustler” hit movie theaters like an earsplitting sledgehammer break in the opening sequence of a pool game. The figurative crack of the white cue ball meeting the tight, V-shaped formation of multi-colored billiard balls sent reverberations coursing through Hollywood and beyond, delivering what many believe to be the all-time classic pool film. Fifty-nine years have passed since the debut of “The Hustler,” and the movie remains as popular and timeless as ever. Movie and sports memorabilia enthusiasts especially love the film, earning “The Hustler” a prime-time spot on the collectibles trail. Based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Walter S. Tevis, “The Hustler” was

produced, directed and cowritten (with Sidney Carroll) for the big screen by Robert Rossen. Scoring the film’s jazzy music score was Kenyon Hopkins, with Eugen Schufftan providing the gritty black-andwhite cinematography. Heading the cast were Paul Newman as “Fast” Eddie Felson, Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats, Piper Laurie as Sarah Packard and George C. Scott as Bert Gordon. Also along for the ride were Myron McCormick, Murray Hamilton, Michael Constantine, Stefan Gierasch, Cliff Pellow, Jake LaMotta, Gordon B. Clarke and Vincent Gardenia. Prior to “The Hustler,” Paul Newman had never held a pool cue in his hands. That quickly changed, however, when pool wiz/technical advisor Willie Mosconi was brought in to coach the actor. September of 1961 with Robert Rossen, George C. Scott, Piper Laurie and Willie Mosconi in attendance. The movie was both a critical and financial success, earning a total of nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Newman), Best Actress (Laurie), Best Supporting Actor (Gleason, Scott), and Best Director (Rossen). “The Hustler” retains much of its magic today, especially among the collector crowd. The movie’s original one-sheet poster (27-by-41 inches), featuring Paul Newman and Piper Laurie in a steamy embrace highly reminiscent of a romance novel book cover, with a smaller inset of Jackie Gleason at bottom, curiously makes no reference to pool. The fanciful blurb reads: “It delves without compromise into the hungers that lie deep within us all!” One lightly restored example in very fine condition on linen sold at auction for $406.30. More to pool aficionados’ liking is the reissue one-sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) from 1964 with the come-on: “They

Spirited bidding pushed Guyette & Deeter’s Summer auction to the $4,000,000 mark on Aug. 21 and 22. This was the second auction conducted exclusively by phone, absentee and online bidding for the antique decoy and sporting art specialty auction company based in St. Michaels, Md. Collectors continue to feel comfortable bidding even if they have not viewed the items in person because the company guarantees condition reports. Many companies sell items “as is.” Eight decoys sold for over $100,000, and 56 sold for over $10,000. Seven of the $100,000-plus decoys came from the estate of decoy collector Dr. Lloyd T. The cherry chest of drawers on frame, Deerfield, Mass., area, late 18th century, sold for $137,500. on the 14-inch-tall figure to $21,250. Paintings were led by a Ralph Cahoon work titled “Ship Ablaze” ($25,000) showing a shipboard fire being fought from the docks and a full-length Prior-Hamblen School work of a girl in a salmon-red dress, which brought $13,750. A late 18th century needlework sampler from Marblehead ($10,625) and a paint-decorated chest of drawers from Vermont with exuberant surface ($9,375) helped to round out the top lots of folk offerings. The Kolar Collection The Kolar collection was, at its core, a group of Pennsylvania and Ohio painted furniture, redware, and fraktur, all of which attracted considerable interest. Devotees of the category phoned, emailed, and traveled for private, socially-distanced viewings by appointment to gather information about the material. A rare blanket chest from Sugar Creek Township in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, realized $33,250, and led the results. Painted boxes, redware, fraktur, and mochaware did well. A redware plate from the Dry Pottery in Berks County sold for $5,000. Fraktur accounted for approximately two dozen lots of the Kolar sale and were led by a rare house blessing ($4,688). The collection was also recognized for its Windsor chairs, one in particular produced great competition, a Rhode Island example in powder blue paint ($11,250). Shaker Collections Another sale titled “Shaker Collections” consisted of 189 lots, about 80 percent of which were from two wellput-together collections built over many years. A yellowpainted cupboard sold for $9,375, a butternut ten-drawer

tall chest ($5,938), and a redpainted chest of five drawers from Watervliet ($3,625) accounted for some of the top furniture prices. Shaker classics like a bittersweet oval pantry box sold for $6,875, a white-painted dipper ($5,313), and yellow-painted bucket initialed “MC” realized $5,000. Also drawing noteworthy attention were a rare candle shelf ($4,063) and a bluepainted buggy box ($5,000). For more information, visit www.skinnerinc.com.

The August Americana sales showcased fresh-to-themarket property owned by a variety of consignors who trusted Skinner to handle their collections with the care, honesty, and expertise for which Skinner has developed a reputation over their decades in business. Property of Various Owners A legendary, but long-dormant connoisseurs collection purchased quietly from many of the best dealers of the late 1960s and early 1970s produced some of the best prices and most competitive bidding. This included the auction’s top lot, a rare, diminutive, and extraordinary scalloped-top chest of drawers on frame from the Deerfield, Mass., area, distinguished from other pieces of furniture in the same well-studied group by the dramatic shape of the top, and the overall remarkable state of its preservation. The standout piece brought $137,500. Other furniture from the same collection included the “MH” Hadley chest ($62,500), a rare and early wing chair ($50,000), and a bizarrely unique marbletop table with wonderful history from Concord, Mass. ($17,500). Other furniture highlights included a classic Massachusetts block-front chest ($27,500), a Philadelphia high chest of drawers ($21,250) with understated (for Philadelphia) embellishments, and a subtle, calming, and downright useful blue-graypainted cupboard ($16,250). In all, over 140 pieces of furniture were sold, and furniture accounted for eight of the sale’s top 10 lots. Prices include buyer’s premium. Smalls Rare and early smalls also created a stir, including English salt-glazed stoneware, other early ceramics, needlework pictures, pocketbooks, and wallets. Some of the ceramics that proved quite desirable were a 1755 dated pitcher with sgraffito decoration colored in cobalt blue and referencing King George ($3,750) and a pair of polychrome tin-glazed wall pockets ($5,313). Several needlework pictures brought well into the four figures, including an especially colorful 17th century example that topped them all at $5,000. Folk Art There were strong prices among folk art and painted furniture as well. One of the most inspected and talked about objects in the sale was a small carved and painted figure of a Native American, which appeared to be a model for a mid-19th century ship’s figurehead. All that inspection and talk was not for nothing, and bidders drove the price

much more. These sales are partly hospitality events and unique to the special community of regional folk art collectors who faithfully attend and bid. There is complimentary homemade food, drinks, and snacks. For 50-plus years, Foltz pottery shows have been conducted the same way. And, there will be more auctions, according

the late 19th century into the 20th century, achieving an international reputation and consistently promoting

artistic innovation. Proud that the pottery was “an artist’s studio, not a factory, Rookwood Pottery is known for its exceptionally fine glazes and successful experimental designs. By assimilating the strengths of myriad aesthetic movements from the American Art Pottery Movement to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Rookwood Pottery encouraged decorators to try unusual subjects and to explore new techniques. Pioneering artist Maria

Longworth-Nichols founded the Cincinnati, Ohio, studio in 1880, building the business and laying the foundation for what Rookwood is today, a world-renowned artisanal ceramics company, operating in the heart of the Ohio River Valley. From New York’s Grand Central Station to the Louvre in Paris, contemporary boutique hotels to historic homes, Rookwood has truly made its mark on the world in the past three centuries.

Published to coincide with the company’s 140th anniversary, “Rookwood: The Rediscovery and Revival of an American Icon, An Illustrated History, authored by Bob Batchelor (Rockport Publishers), on sale Sept. 15, hardcover, $45, is a beautiful, collectible, fully illustrated volume telling the rich story of the female-founded, female-owned great American art pottery company. In “Rookwood, author

and historian Bob Batchelor tells the compelling story of this artisanal ceramics company, still operating in the heart of the Ohio River Valley from its founding to present day. Filled with behind-the-scenes artist and creator interviews, stories of Rookwood’s avid collectors, as well as neverbefore-seen images and documents from the company’s historic archives, the reader will see why Rookwood remains a pillar of true craftsmanship.

Called Him ‘Fast Eddie,’” which features a pool cue and balls as its principal theme. Designated as R-64 in auction catalogs, one restored poster in very fine condition on linen brought a top bid of $660. Some of the more attractive “The Hustler” movie posters are the ones produced for the film’s foreign releases. From Italy, there’s the handsome “Lo Spaccone” (“The Hustler”) Italian 2 - Foglio poster (39.5-by-55 inches)

expertly illustrated by Ercole Brini, which pictures Paul Newman raking in a pile of cash from the green felt of a pool table. One restored example in very fine- condition on linen realized a winning bid of $430.20. From France, check out the “L’Arnaqueur” (“The Hustler”) French Petite poster (17.5-by22.5 inches). It features an embracing Paul Newman and Piper Laurie along with a huge hand clutching money. An unrestored example in very fine condition with linen backing sold at auction for $107.55.

This time around, Newman won his Best Actor Oscar, an award many felt he should have taken home in 1961 for “The Hustler.”
