“We know how passionate fine arms collectors can be, and it’s great to see that same energy in other fields of collecting,” said Kevin Hogan, president of Rock Island Auction Company. “We’re grateful for the excitement and support generated for this auction. It’s yet another demonstration of the growing markets for collectibles and fine arms.”

The prop, one of three made for the 1977 film, was previously considered missing and presumed lost forever. The gun had been in the inventory of Bapty & Co., a London prop house that provided numerous weapons for “A New Hope.”The blaster, comprised of military surplus parts, would go on to serve as the prototype for those carried by Solo throughout the first three “Star Wars” films produced. “Star Wars” fans refer to Han Solo’s blaster, one of the most recognizable weapons in movie history, as the “Hero” prop
With a long-standing history and popularity among collectors, decorators and the general public, the Rhinebeck shows have spanned over 30 years, presenting a wide cultural swath of objects from not only America but from Europe, Asia and around the world. Held entirely indoors, the show encompasses three large, well-ventilated buildings, making for a comfortable show experience.“Welcome to our Fall Antiques
at Rhinebeck Show or, more appropriately put, the Rhinebeck experience! Why experience? Well, from the time you arrive at the show, we try our best to make your “experience” as enjoyable and memorable as possible. While our exceptional exhibitors are putting the finishing touch on their displays, anticipation builds up to the show opening when the “experience turns to magic” and the hunt begins. If you have never been to the Rhinebeck show, now is the time to gather your friends, slip on your most comfortable shoes, shop the show (admission good for both days), make dinner reservations in town, and that is

The only surviving blaster originally used by Harrison Ford as Han Solo in “Star Wars: A New Hope” sold at Rock Island Auction Company’s August Premier Auction for $1,057,500. Han Solo’s blaster headlined the three-day event that drew international interest and achieved over $23 million.Interest in the iconic blaster was hotter than the twin suns of Tatooine in the run-up to the auction. The BlasTech DL-44 Heavy Blaster was estimated between $300,000-$500,000. Bidding quickly blew past the estimate, like the 2018 sale of a blaster prop used in “Return of the Jedi,” which realized $550,000.

Zelma is the face of the branding and Cline’s grandmother who raised her. Customers often do a double-take looking at the framed picture of Zelma from the 1930s, then looking back at Cline behind the counter, concluding the two look much alike. Customers love the sentiment, as does Cline. “Antiquing can stir memories. I’ve gotten choked up more than once seeing a planter, a Christmas ornament, a desk or a piece of jewelry that reminds me of my grandma and my childhood. You can’t get that at Walmart.”

Zelma’s has a variety of merchandise, from fine art by listed artists to primitives, antique hardware, Chippendale, Empire, Federal, to Sherry’s favorites: “Tiffany, Art Nouveau, prisms and rococco.” Cline started antiquing out of necessity (the rococco came later), needing a 1920s doorknob that led her to Golden Lane 14 years ago. Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Thisinvestors.begsthe question as to just how mainstream sports card collecting can get. The market for sports cards really came into its own during the recent pandemic. Speculators benefited from the pandemic, as modern-era cards were being flipped onto the market just like meme stocks and sold just as quickly for record prices. This caused a massive frenzy in the vintage sports card market, as high-profile collectors and smart
investors sought refuge there to avoid the speculator frenzy occurring in the modern era market. Assuming that some of these investors bought the right vintage material at that time, and even with the current downturn in the overall stock market, prices are still on the up and up. Sports cards are proving to be another bellwether as to just how well the overall antiques and collectibles trade is performing at presentIronically, time.the sale of this card has caused some interesting comments from pop culture collectors, and several have contacted me to lament that as of right now, it is a shame that no comic book has ever sold for this high amount. As I have stated many times before, however, pop culture will always pale when compared to history over the long term. Coins have far outpaced sports cards for quite some time with a record-breaking sale sitting at close to $19 million. And currently, no comic book has ever sold for more than $4 million. And while I do think it is only a matter of time before certain collecting categories start to catch up to the sale of high-profile coins, the overall market is just not there yet. Still, this is a good sign that the market for high-profile antiques and collectibles is quite robust.
On Aug. 27, history was made. It was on this date that Heritage Auctions sold one of the highest graded and most iconic sports cards ever. The card in question was the highly sought-after 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie baseball card, and the final bid was $12.6, million which includes the 20-percent buyer’s premium that Heritage charges to the successful high bidder. Unfortunately, no stale bubble gum was included with the sale, but for $12.6 million, I am confident that either Heritage Auctions or the consignor could have easily provided it to the new owner.

Authenticator) has already graded at least two known “10s” of this same card. It should also be noted that in the eyes of most prominent sports card collectors, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card, while iconic, is not the most sought-after sports card in existence. That moniker goes to the infamous T-206 Honus Wagner card, which was released back when baseball cards first came packaged with chewing tobacco around the turn of the 20th century. Still, the sale of this recordbreaking Mickey Mantle card has the distinction of being the highest price ever paid for a sports collectible and has set off a ripple effect that is vibrating throughout the market for sports cards. Excitement is currently running high among collectors and

cards are much more stable than speculative and volatile modern issues. As such, anyone looking to invest in this market is well advised to go after vintage and established cards if investing for the long term.In conclusion, investors definitely scored a home run here, if not a grand slam. If this card or one like it comes up for auction again, all eyes are going to be on the sale of that card. And while I hope the final bid surpasses this amount, if it does not, that too will reverberate through the sports card collecting market. You see, the thing about record-breaking sales is that just like the latest meme stock, everyone expects the prices to continue to go up and up, until they don’t, and then chaos ensues. However, at least for right now, collectors of highprofile vintage cards have nothing to worry about. In fact, I can only surmise that the sky is the limit.
Shawn Surmick has been an avid collector since the age of 12. He currently resides in his hometown of Boyertown, Pa., and is a passionate collector of antiques and collectibles. His articles focus on various topics affecting the marketplace.
Where does this leave sports cards in the grand scheme of things? Obviously the market for highly soughtafter vintage cards is nowhere near as speculative as it was back in the 1980s during the initial baseball card speculative bubble. Even back then, cards like the coveted 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card and the T206 Honus Wagner were sought after. The market for vintage sports cards has just become much more established since then. One negative in regard to all of this is that some speculators think the sale of this card justifies some of the insane prices being achieved for modernera sports cards. Speculators need to use caution when using this logic, as looking at the sports card market as a whole, vintage and iconic

tions stamps at my “What’s It Worth” appraisal program, I often joke with them by saying I can show them the “Fountain of Youth” and make them feel young again. All they have to do is attend a stamp auction with me (I’m 70), and we’ll be the youngest ones in the room. I’m exaggerating (slightly), but unfortunately few in today’s younger generation are interested in collecting stamps. That doesn’t mean that all stamps are valueless,Philatelyhowever.is the collecting of stamps, and Philatilists are “stamp collectors.” Back in the early 20th century, prior to television, computers, video games, and cell phones, many boys and girls in America were philatelists at some point in their life.
Here are a few thoughts on dealing with a personal or inherited stamp collection:•

• A quantity of stamps thrown into a box or container in a disorganized manner is not a collection but rather an accumulation. Collections will almost always sell better than accumulations, yet I see far more accumulations than collections.•Thebest and rarest stamps, in the best condition, such as some early 19th century issues and Zeppelin Air Mail stamps, will still command premium prices from serious collectors. Your job is to identify those valuable stamps yourself or sell them through a reliable individual or company who can identify and sell them for you.•
You can try to sell them to a stamp collector or dealer who will pay you a fair price for what you have.

Well, it’s the talented vendors, of course. And this year’s line-up of quality vendors will not disappoint. The slogan, “Bring a truck,” isn’t a joke. Shoppers will need one to haul off their goods.

• Evaluating condition based upon factors such as color, centering, original gum, partial gum, hinge marks, perfs, watermarks, faults, and other variables is often best left to the experts.•You can generally obtain more for your stamp collection by selling through a specialty stamp auction, on eBay, or directly to stamp collectors and dealers, rather than at a general auction that has few knowledgeable stamp buyers in attendance.•Yourchances of finding an extremely valuable stamp like the “Inverted Jenny” that sold for nearly $1,600,000 in 2018 are probably less likely than you winning the lottery.

Unfortunately, most collections I see are not serious collections but rather accumulations or albums of common stamps started by children or amateur collectors long ago. So unless the collection is a serious investment-grade collection, don’t expect much value. However, anything is better than leaving a stamp collection in the hot attic, or damp basement, for many years, where the stamps stick together, deteriorate, or basically become valueless. There is one school of thought today that suggests that stamps will continue to diminish in value due to the growth of email and stamps.com.MikeIvankovich is an auctioneer, appraiser, home downsizing expert, and host of the “What’s It Worth? Occasionally I see a major stamp collection that has some significant value, and those I usually recommend be sold at a specialty stamp auction, where it can be sorted by stamp experts, and then sold to stamp collectors and dealers.
