Boneshaker bicycle featured a painted iron frame, wood rims and restored wheels and had a rear brake that was activated by twisting the handlebars forward. It nearly tripled its $3,500 high estimate. Also, a Canadian 1897 Brantford Bicycle Company (Brantford, Ontario), fully restored mechanically and cosmetically, with original wood rims, handle bars and seat, a custom-made solid wood display stand and added stamped leather pouch, rang up $3,835. “Who says specialized collector auctions are the only way to drive top results?” inquired Ben Lennox of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Our auctions have showed that great results can be achieved in a highly diverse sale anchored around two solid collections and many different collecting categories. We pride ourselves in bringing objects of merit to the collecting world.” “When I analyzed the results of the two-day September sale, I’d never seen such a diversity in the collecting genres such as bicycles, radios, microphones, tin toys, graded comic books, cast-iron mechanical banks, toy trains, clocks, breweriana, signs and advertising, jukeboxes, coinoperated novelties, steam engines, gas pumps and even a Mickey Mantle autographed bat,” continued Lennox. “We’re thrilled that people are taking notice and that so many collecting categories are hot. While advertising signs continue to achieve record results month after month, it’s exciting to see strong results across the board. We’re still unable to host in-person sales, but our Miller & Miller bidding platform, plus LiveAuctioneers.com, attracts bidders far and wide.” The first session grossed $133,045 and the second, $323,792, for a total of $456,837, including the buyer’s premium. Day one had 311 bidders placing 5,437 bids, while 426 bidders placed 8,466 bids online on day two. headlines of the mainstream news media but a truly rare collection of Meissen porcelain that demolishes all previous auction records barely gets a mention. When will the average speculator realize that there is more going on behind the scenes in the mass-produced collectibles marketplace than he or she is led to believe? Market manipulation is something rarely ever talked about by pundits in the trade. And that will be the subject of an upcoming article. Thanks for reading, and at the very least I hope I got you to do an internet search of Meissen porcelain as opposed to “Super Mario 64.”

Critics of mine will often lament that the future of the antiques and collectibles trade belongs to nostalgia-driven collectors who grew up playing “Super Mario Bros.” and “Pokemon.” What these critics don’t seem to understand is the direct relation that the collectibles trade has to the antiques market by and large. Quite simply, a desirable antique is nothing more than a collectible that is older than 100 years of age. In order for a collectible to become a highly sought after antique there needs to be more than one generation that fancies it. Ironically, I have long argued that a simple difference between the collectibles market and the overall antiques market is that nostalgia drives the collectibles trade while history usually drives the antiques trade. Because of that, over the long term historically significant antiques will always win out. This does not mean that antiques cannot lose value or dominance, it simply means that history affects more generations than that of nostalgia on a long enough time line. Right now, we are witnessing, some interesting developments in a lot of pop culture based collecting categories. The prices of key vintage comic books from the 1960s and 1970s in near-mint condition or better are now firmly out of the reach of most collectors. The same can be said for most sought after “Pokemon” cards in nearmint condition or better from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The mass media and even well respected publications in the trade have all taken notice of the interest being paid to up and coming speculative collectibles at present time. This is nothing new. I myself continue to comment on these developments on a regular basis. Incidentally, when prices at auction make new records in the collectibles market, everyone talks about them. However, when prices fall, the overall news media is eerily silent. Case in point, back in July, a factorysealed copy of “Super Mario 64” graded by WATA Games in 9.8 condition sold for a record

and bidding was intense. All in all, according to Sotheby’s, the results of this sale represented the highest grossing total for a European ceramics sale. I mention the subsequent price crash of the “Super Mario 64” game and the surprise results of the Sotheby’s Meissen porcelain sale to ensure readers realize that just because a lot of attention is on pop culture collectibles at present time does not mean that truly scarce and historic antiques are languishing unsold in auction after auction. Quite the contrary! It is long past time that collectors and investors operating in these markets realize that historical importance is usually more important than nostalgia and that traditional antiques, much like collectibles, are not dying, but transitioning. It is sad state of affairs when a speculative item like “Super Mario 64” in 9.8 condition captures the

breaking price of $1.56 million. It became the very first $ millionplus vintage video game to ever be sold at auction. A lot of prominent news conglomerates reported on the story. I wrote an article a little after the sale telling collectors to ignore this sale and received an ample amount of critical messages. Are you aware that a copy of this game in the same graded copy sold through Goldin Auctions in September for less than $800,000? What’s even more amazing is that very few news organizations covered this less-than-stellar sale. This is the risk of attempting to invest in speculative, unproven collectibles and one that repeatedly has to be taught to starryeyed speculators who come into these markets seeing nothing but visions of dollar signs in their eyes. Most markets in the antiques and collectibles trade, especially unproven markets, are extremely risky from a financial perspective. “Super Mario 64” came out in 1995. There are a lot of copies out there, and most definitely more than a few are sitting factory-sealed. This is by no means a rare video game even in 9.8 condition. In the same month (September 2021) that “Super Mario 64” fell from grace, Sotheby’s announced recordbreaking prices were achieved for a collection of Meissen porcelain. I can almost guarantee many people who are fond of pop culture collectibles have never heard of Meissen porcelain. Meissen is credited as being the first European hardpaste porcelain which entered production at around 1710. Early pieces are a sight to behold and often fetch significant sums on the secondary market, but make no mistake that even some contemporary pieces are also quite coveted and valuable. The collection that Sotheby’s sold for recordbreaking sums were all comprised of pre-war pieces of universal appeal. Certain lots went for more than five times the estimated auction price, proving that demand was consistent

Michener Museum. “His work continues to inspire new generations of artists and woodworkers, and we are proud to collaborate with Michener Art Museum on this exhibit that investigates the inspiration he gained from his early female patrons.” As a sculptor, Esherick worked primarily in wood and extended his unique forms to furniture, furnishings, interiors, buildings, and more. Now recognized as a leader of the Studio Furniture Movement, Esherick saw himself as an artist and his concern was with form, not technique. He pursued his artistic vision in forms that might turn to furniture or other sculptural furnishings, but that was just one aspect of his art, which was complemented by the paintings, prints, drawings, poetry, and sculpture he also created. “Daring Design: The Impact of Three Women on Wharton Esherick’s Craft” is co-curated by Michener Art Museum’s chief curator Laura Turner Igoe, Ph.D., and woodworker Mark Sfirri, a leading authority on Esherick and his life. This is one in a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional partnership formed by the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the Art Bridges Initiative. Heritage Auctions’ Latest Comics And Comic Art Auction Soars To A World-Record $26.5 Million auction’s outset Jack Kirby’s Dr. Doom-struck cover art for 1969’s Fantastic Four No. 86 sold for $480,000, the highest price ever paid at auction for an original work by comicdom’s most influential creator. The following day came a worldwide headline, when SpiderMan’s debut in Amazing Fantasy No. 15 sold for $3.6 million to become the most valuable comic book anywhere. Then, on

day three came one more Christmas miracle, when Charles Schulz’s Dec. 18, 1966, “Peanuts” strip sold for $360,000, the most ever paid at auction for an original Charlie Brown. By the time the auction closed, more than 6,400 bidders worldwide had participated in a near-sellout event that realized $26,555,721, a new highwater mark for a comic book and comic art auction. That topples the previous record of $22.4 million set at Heritage Auctions three months ago. “About a decade ago, the record sale price for a comic book was $317,000, and the biggest comics auction was $5 million. Look how far we’ve come,” stated Heritage Auctions vice president Barry Sandoval. “In last week’s sale

we had 500 different lots sell for at least $10,000 each, and 68 of those hit $50,000 or more. My favorite part of all this is that 26 different consignors will be receiving checks for more than $100,000 after the auction, and a couple of those will be for seven figures.” This was such a remarkable auction that a half-million-dollar lot didn’t even garner a headline. A CGC Fine+ 6.5 copy of Batman No. 1 brought $576,000, the highest price ever realized for that historic book in that grade. This has been such a record-shattering year for the Dark Knight that even a CGC Good 2.0 copy of his 1940 solo debut now sells for $222,000, a once unfathomable number. Fischer, Weil, and Content, as well as artwork created by Weil and Content, “Daring Design” investigates the visual and material dialogue between these artists and patrons. “The support and collaboration from Fischer, Weil, and Content allowed Wharton Esherick to produce some of his most innovative work during the Great Depression, when many artists struggled financially, and yet the impact these women had on his art and career is not widely recognized,” said Kate Quinn, executive director of Michener Art Museum. “We are thrilled to bring this firstof-its-kind exhibition to the public to explore the connections between these women who so profoundly influenced Esherick’s work.” “Daring Design” features several works on loan from the Wharton Esherick Museum located in the artist’s former studio in Chester County, near Malvern, Pa. Quinn also serves on the board of director of the Wharton Esherick Museum. In addition, a special group of objects are on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Wharton Esherick blurred the traditional separation between fine art and craft, adding personal expression to everything he created, whether furniture, sculpture, or the architecture of his own home and studio,” said Julie Siglin, executive director of the Wharton Esherick

New Exhibition Examines Cultural Exchange Between American Artists And Venetian Glassmakers During The Late 19th Century

The exhibition is organized by Crawford Alexander Mann III, curator of prints and drawings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “Venice, a city of water, light and beauty, has long captivated American artists and collectors who have been inspired by the creative talents of Venetians in glassmaking to lacework,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent Director at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “With this exhibition, ‘Sargent, Whistler and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano,’ the Smithsonian American Art Museum continues its strong commitment to exploring American art with global connections. We are proud to foster conversations about influences on American art and life.” Between 1860 and 1915, the renowned glassmaking industry on the Venetian island of Murano experienced intense growth. This Venetian glass revival coincided with a surge in Venice’s popularity as a destination for American tourists, many of whom visited the glass furnaces and eagerly collected ornate handblown goblets decorated with floral and animal motifs. As its fame and quality grew, Venetian glass became more than a travel souvenir; patrons saw these as museum-quality works of fine art. Collector interest led to

frequent depictions of Italian glassmakers and glass objects by prominent American artists of that era, including John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler. During the same time, Venice’s other decorative arts industries, most notably mosaics, lace and jewelry, saw a resurgence, in part through American patronage. Despite its prestige, shifts in tastes have shrouded the allure of Venetian glassware. This exhibition displays individual works of glass with long histories in American hands, objects that crossed the Atlantic more than a century ago, in conversation with paintings, watercolors and prints by American artists who Continued on page 7

Collection’s offering in this event exceeded expectations, again, among them the very first issue of Superboy, which, like most books in the pedigree, is the best-known copy in existence. The CGC Near Mint 9.4 copy opened bidding at $22,000 but quickly soared to $72,000. But the Boy of Steel was quickly surpassed by the CGC Near Mint/Mint 9.8 copy of 1946’s Suspense Comics No. 11, which boasts artist L.B. Cole’s iconic devil-of-a-cover. The highestgraded stunner, which looked fresh off the newsstand, sold for $132,000. Each session contained its share of thrills, wonders and delights, beginning with the sounding of the opening bell, when a Sandman-co-starring page from Amazing Spider-Man No. 18 by (who else?) his co-creator Steve Ditko sold for $156,000. Only a few minutes later, the original art for the DC Comics house ad marking the debut of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” sold for $96,000. And only a few moments after that, Frank Frazetta’s original cover for 1963’s “The Lost Continent” paperback brought $132,000.

The auction also included this beloved rarity, a December 1987 daily “Calvin and Hobbes” by the beloved Bill Watterson, which realized $132,000 after some intense bidding. In that same session, Alex Ross’ indelible portrait of The Dark Knight painted for the cover of 1999’s prestige-format graphic novel “Batman: War on Crime” sold for $102,000, shattering pre-auction estimates and setting a new auction record for the beloved artist. Ross’ Caped Crusader was joined in this auction by his equally cherished and iconic “Superman: Peace on Earth” cover, which sold for $90,000. But this event was about far more than just impressive numbers for important comics

and influential art. As Sandoval noted, “There were plenty of startling results to be found throughout the five-day auction, among them the very first printing of the very first issue of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. The 1970 copy of the industry’s standard-bearer, graded CGC Near Mint+ 9.6, demolished its pre-auction estimate to sell for $45,600. And an artist’s proof of Randy Bowen’s 1997 bronze statue of ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ inspired by Kirby, likewise obliterated expectations to sell for $45,600.” But Hulk likes to smash. Fantasy No. 15 climbed to its record high, a CGC Near Mint 9.4 copy of The Amazing SpiderMan No. 1 sold for $241,200. Only four years ago, the first issue of the wall-crawler’s solo title was selling for about half that in the very same grade. Spidey, now at the center of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, appears to have become the most treasured character in comicdom. And, surely, next year’s long-anticipated big-screen bow of “Black Adam,” to be played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, factored into this auction’s record price for 1945’s The Marvel Family No. 1, which blew past pre-auction estimates to sell for $186,000. But this was also a historic issue. It’s but one of two copies graded this high (CGC Near Mint 9.4), and it comes from the Promise Collection Pedigree, which contains some 5,000 Golden Age books not seen since they were bought off newsstands in the 1940s. Venice’s glass, bead and lace industries. American patrons like Isabella Stewart Gardner and Jane Stanford brought back to the United States art and luxury souvenirs from Italy, and their admiration for Venice and Murano glass is evident in the respective museums they founded. “Venice’s famed glass industry has long contributed to its historical richness and to its reputation for cutting-edge contemporary art, together with the Venice Biennale art fair,” continued Mann. “To this day Americans are dazzled by this face-off between past and present. It is a testament to the production and skillset of Venetian artisans and the bustling city’s self-made image that Americans are still seduced by this island metropolis, following in the footsteps of Sargent and Whistler to enjoy its beauty and creative energy.” After closing in Washington, D.C., “Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano” will travel to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. In-kind support has been provided by Christie’s. Related Exhibition The exhibition “New Glass Now” is on view at the Renwick Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s branch for contemporary craft, from Oct. 22 to Mar. 6, 2022. It offers a global survey that highlights the innovation shown by a new generation of glassmakers. The exhibition, organized by the Corning Museum of Glass, features a range of objects, installations, videos and performances by 50 artists working in more than 23 countries. Their work challenges the very notion of what the material of glass is and what it can do. Visitors are advised to consult the museum’s website, www.Americanart.si.edu/visit, for visitation details.

found inspiration in Venice. “Thanks to years of research, we present an accurate reconstruction of the tastes of these travelers using masterpieces of glassware and fine art that they purchased more than a century ago,” said Mann. “This juxtaposition reveals the impact of Italian glass on American art, literature, design theory and science education, as well as ideas at the time about gender, labor and class relations.” The exhibition brings together more than 140 artworks, and features, in addition to rare etchings by Whistler and major oil paintings by Sargent, work by Robert Frederick Blum, William Meritt Chase, Charles Caryl Coleman, Louise Cox, Frank Duveneck, Ellen Day Hale, Thomas Moran, Maxfield Parrish, Maurice Prendergast, and Julius LeBlanc Stewart. More than a quarter of the objects in the groundbreaking exhibition are from the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection, joining loans from more than 45 prestigious museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago, and from private collections. Paintings and prints intermingle among rarely seen Venetian glass mosaic portraits and glass cups, vases and urns by the leading glassmakers of Murano, including members of the legendary Seguso and Barovier families. Several artworks were conserved specifically for inclusion in the exhibition, including a stunning Byzantine revival gold and glass mosaic necklace. “Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano” gives fresh attention to women artists who were often sidelined in the history of the period, such as Mabel Pugh. The exhibition includes two linoleum block prints by Pugh that were recently acquired by the museum. As both makers and collectors, women were at the forefront of reviving and sustaining

For one reason or another, I consider the career and life of Carl Mehwaldt (1809-87) to be a fascinating story. He was a journeyman potter from Germany who traveled to Russia and Lebanon to expand the knowledge of his trade. He then returned to Germany and eventually migrated across the Atlantic Ocean, landing on Long Island. He made his way through New York City, traveling northwest along the Erie Canal on a barge, before settling near Niagara Falls in western New York. The Buffalo Historical Society first published his story in 1921, followed by an

In a history of his life, documented and preserved because of Camehl: “Mehwaldt came of a line of potters; for his father and his grandfather before him had spent their lives at the potter’s wheel. After he had learned the trade, young Mehwaldt, as was the custom of the country, passed several years as a journeyman potter, in search of experience. In the early 1840s, a man of wealth, Williams by name, gathered together several families from the neighborhood of Bruessow and brought the little band to the United

Camehl’s articles were also among the earliest published stories devoted to a single American potter; these stories were based on her firsthand accounts with Mehwaldt’s living daughter and locals who remembered the Mehwaldt Pottery from their childhood. States. They purchased a piece of land in western New York, on the Niagara frontier, cleared the timber and built a hamlet of log houses. Remembering the village from which they had come, they named the new home New Bergholz, later dropping the “New.” Fired by the glowing accounts, which came back to the Fatherland from this transplanted colony, a second company came together in 1851. Among this group were the potter Mehwaldt, his wife, Albertine and their children. Their voyage lasted seven weeks, and as seems to have been the not uncommon fate of sailing vessels during those years, the ship ran ashore upon a sandbar off Long

A giant red earthenware chandelier made by Mehwaldt also hung in this church, until the building was torn down in 1906. Carl Mehwaldt Continued from page 8

Aug. 14, 2019. The museum is located directly across the street from Mehwaldts’ house and the site of his pottery. Mehwaldt was clearly a remarkable potter based on the wares that I have seen in the New York State Museum in Albany, N.Y., as well as private collections, and an object owned by the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. However, it is his lesser-known production that really sets him apart. Upon arriving to America, two of Mehwaldt’s sons, Charles (d. 1864) and Herman (d. 1864), became enamored

with patriotism, and enlisted in the northern army during the Civil War in 1862. Neither returned home. Charles was killed in Cold Harbor, Va., on June 3, 1864, and a few weeks later, Herman died in Petersburg, Va. Likely overwhelmed with emotions, Mehwaldt decided to memorialize his sons by constructing two red earthenware wreaths in their memory. He began with a round pottery frame, 16 inches in diameter, and meticulously decorated both wreaths with hand-modeled flowers that grew around his home; each wreath was adorned in sunflowers, roses, daisies, myrtles, zinnias, water lilies and buttercups, surrounded by leaves. The wreaths were then fired in the kiln without a glaze, and afterwards, carefully painted with vibrant colors. Mehwaldt hung the wreaths in the Holy Ghost Church, only a few hundred yards from the site of his house and pottery, until the church was torn down in 1906. Where the wreaths went next is not completely known, but apparently, Ada Walker Camehl had come into the possession of at least one of the wreaths based on the information she published in “The Magazine Antiques.” The whereabouts of these wreaths have been unknown in recent years, but one was just rediscovered in Seattle, Wash., and has returned home to the Das Haus Museum. However, it has not been previously published that

Installation Of Long-Term Loans Celebrates Upcoming Exhibition, “Lives Of The Gods: Divinity In Maya Art” The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced that it will unveil a new installation of two eighth-century Maya stone monuments, known as stelae, in its iconic Great Hall. The unveiling took place Sept. 2. The two massive stelae, both significant long-term loans from the Republic of Guatemala, feature life-sized representations of influential Indigenous American rulers: a king, K’inich Yo’nal Ahk II (ca. A.D. 664–729), and queen, Ix Wak Jalam Chan (Lady Six Sky) (ca. A.D. 670s–741), one of the most powerful women known by name from the ancient

Americas. The installation heralds the upcoming exhibition “Lives of the Gods: Divinity in Maya Art,” which is scheduled to open in fall 2022 and will highlight Maya visual narratives featuring a cast of gods, sacred beings that are personified elements of the cosmos, nature, and agriculture. The Great Hall display is also the first in a series of special exhibitions and installations that will present art of the ancient Americas, sub-Saharan Africa, and Oceania throughout The Met’s galleries while the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing is closed for a renovation project

that will reenvision these collections for a new generation of visitors. “This is a transformational moment for The Met’s Great Hall: The ancient Hellenistic sculpture of the goddess Athena that has presided over the space leaves as Lady Six Sky, a queen from the ancient Americas, arrives to be prominently displayed alongside a life-sized representation of a second influential Indigenous American ruler,” said Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French

Director of The Met. “The Metropolitan Museum of Art is honored to collaborate with our friends and colleagues in the Republic of Guatemala on the celebration of these most important and exceptionally beautiful Maya monuments. As a museum of the world and for the world, it is a great privilege for The Met to share these masterpieces with the thousands of visitors who walk through our Great Hall each day. They are also there to highlight the extraordinary

Rockefeller Wing. “This display truly reflects the fruitful partnership the Museum enjoys with the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Guatemala and highlights the important ongoing archaeological projects and preservation efforts led by our colleagues in the Maya region.”

Felipe Aguilar, Guatemala’s Minister of Culture and Sports, commented, “Guatemala is a country with a cultural wealth of more than 3,000 years of history. My vision as Minister of Culture is that the culture of Guatemala transforms into an engine of economic development for all Guatemalans.” The Republic of Guatemala is celebrating its bicentennial of independence in 2021. place of her infant son, she led military campaigns to conquer neighboring cities. Portraying her with a captive underfoot and impersonating a goddess, this stela, made of limestone, represents her triumph and power. With this portrait, she emphasized both her strategic prowess in warfare and her divine right to rule. Portrait of a seated ruler receiving a noble (Stela 5), also carved by unrecorded Maya court artists, from Yok’ib (Piedras Negras, Guatemala), depicts the king, K’inich Yo’nal Ahk II, who ruled the urban center of Yok’ib for more than 40 years. He commissioned his royal sculptors to create a

row of monuments, including this stela, at the base of the city’s palace complex in a gesture to assert his power. The king is portrayed in a supernatural moment, enthroned as deities emerge from the jaws of a living mountain overhead. After his death, K’inich Yo’nal Ahk II was buried near the monuments in the richest tomb discovered at Yok’ib. Further reading on the loans can be found in an article by curator James Doyle on The Met’s website, and in wall texts throughout the installation in the Great Hall. What Can You Do with Your China Set? Your Children Don’t Want It

By Mike Ivankovich

So what can you do with your vintage porcelain and china? For starters, recognize that while a few sets can bring fairly strong prices, most are common and are worth relatively little. “Mr. Ivankovich, would you like to buy my china” is one of the most common phone calls and emails I receive, usually from people struggling to find a buyer.

Second, ignore the prices on Replacements.com. Although their website is the absolute best for researching makers and patterns, your chances of selling at their prices is next to impossible. My suggestions: • Keep It: If you can find room for it, keep it, because it usually won’t sell for much. • Children: Although they’ve probably already

“What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute

The world has changed, and the china set that gave you so many fond culinary and holiday memories of dinners past has almost become a dinosaur. My generation is downsizing, and usually our next home has no formal dining room. Most of our children don’t want our china sets because they generally don’t appreciate the formal dining experience as our mothers and grandmothers did. And all too often they prefer disposable paper and plastic over the harder-to-clean formal dinnerware. Added to that, most vintage china is not dishwasher or microwave friendly.

What’s It Worth? • Break Up the Set: Usually the serving pieces, platters, sugar and creamer, and salt and pepper shakers will be in more demand than dinner and salad plates, tea cups and saucers, or soup and berry bowls. • Join a Collectors Club: The Vintage Table Cloth Lovers Club members love and appreciate vintage china. (https://business.facebook.com/ VintageTableclothLoversClub/).

Reach out and join that group and see if there are any members seeking to acquire what you have. • Donate It: If all else fails, give it away to someone who’ll appreciate it or donate to a nonprofit resale store. What’s it worth? Always remember that the most amount of money requires the most amount of work. Want the most amount of money? Then sell it in a

manner where you control the selling situation, such as garage sale, flea market, etc. Or eBay it. Describe it, photo it, list it, and then pack and ship it once (if) it sells. Want to do the least amount of work? Then donate it and be done with it. Want to let the auctioneer deal with it? After deducting auction commissions and selling and delivery expenses, how much will be left? Ask

yourself this question. How hard do you want to work to make $25-$50-$75? For many, the answer is fairly obvious. Mike Ivankovich is an auctioneer, appraiser, home downsizing expert, and host of the “What’s It Worth? Ask Mike the Appraiser” radio show. Now in its eighth year, “What’s It Worth” airs live in the Philadelphia area on Friday mornings from 9:30 to

10:30 a.m. EST on WBCB 1490 AM and on the internet at www.WBCB1490.com. Mike offers house and estate contents appraisals nationally through his www.Zoom FacetimeAppraisals.com website, and he has presented his “What’s It Worth” Zoom Appraisal Program in 24 states. • eBay Completed Prices: Use eBay Completed Prices to get a realistic feel for what people are paying today for what you’re selling. • Sell Locally: While a few pieces may sell well on eBay, the work and expense of shipping 100-plus pieces of china long distance can be prohibitive.
