The Charleses were always willing to host guests and share their knowledge of what they had. Gene always said when collecting, “Make sure it’s right, and you’ll never have to make an excuse for it.” They were taught by their mentors that “condition isn’t the only thing, it’s everything.” They celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2016. The PA Auction Center held a two-day auction Sept. 11 and 12 at the Jack Allen Museum, located in Southampton, N.J. The country living museum was the home to many unique vintage and antique items, noteably farm machinery. Between two online platforms and the live crowd, there were 595 registered bidders. Among the highlights was an antique Minneapolis-Moline UDLX tractor, which realized $85,000. The early closed-cab concept farm tractor was developed in 1938. Entry to
the cabin was through a large rear door. The bodywork was painted in what was termed “prairie-gold,” a bright yellowish-gold. The production of this particular model stopped in 1941 and was never made in large numbers, due to both low sales and the Depression. It was a very expensive tractor in its day. A Minneapolis-Moline U open cab tractor sold for $42,000. A 1937 Blue Bird tractor realized $6,500, a Rolling Gulf grease cart went for $3,200, and a refurbished Erie Meter Systems gas pump sold for $2,500. A Wayne gas pump sold for $2,400, a 1963 Bunqartz tractor model #13514, $2,250, and a Gibson tractor brought $2,100. The PA Auction Center is based in Quarryville, Pa. Decoy enthusiast Jim Doherty of New Jersey was known as a passionate Americana collector who assembled one of the finest collections of waterfowl decoys in the country. He passed away unexpectedly in 2013. His wife, Pat, also took tremendous pride in the collection. She also had a keen eye for color and form. Pat passed away on May 2, 2020. Over time, for nearly four decades, Jim and Pat built a collection considered by most in the hobby to be among the best, but without a doubt, their New Jersey examples were among the very best. The collection was well rounded and covered most of the major regions with excellent examples by
important carvers. Jim’s friends and fellow collectors knew him as a fierce competitor when it came to buying at auction. He always prepared with a well-planned strategy, especially at the watershed sales like The McCleery sale, where he walked away with the famous Bowman curlew and the Harry V. Shourds gull. His in-depth knowledge of decoys grew from a commitment to studying the available books, having frequent serious discussions with other collectors, attending decoy shows and auctions, and welcoming other passionate collectors into the couple’s New Jersey home. In 2011, Jim completed and Continued on page 2

Part of my binging online content of late has been viewing home decorating videos. I watch, as any collector does, to see what people own. In the old days, I did the same thing with shelter magazines. I would clip out photographs of interesting Pennsylvania furniture and put it in a folder. Anyhow, so I have watched a ton of these and have to confess at my disgust at the minimalists who seem to reign over home dĂŠcor. Oh, what a lovely room, yeah, a sofa and a poster on the wall. Heck no! I watched one fellow, whose mother was a renowned European aristocrat/collector, espouse minimalism as the way to live. “Less is better,â€? he kept saying. Once again, I say heck no! As a collector, I love to live with pretty things. I use them to entertain with. I go to them, particularly the paintings, when I need a break from the insanity of life. I do not obsess about them, but I do see the value and breadth
thought they were the same thing. I do not believe that collecting will die, nor do I believe that collectors are made. To me, collecting and showcasing your collection is something that is more nature than nurture. And that gene, despite repeated efforts by the decorator magazines to dump bleach into that gene pool, will persevere. We just need, as collectors, to take a stand that owning antiques and collectibles is not a bad thing. I collect antiques, but I am not a hoarder. I showcase my treasures in my home, but that does not make me a candidate to be on a reality TV show. Show your pride and embrace your collections!

they bring to my life. I am particularly fascinated by the millennially oriented decorating channel where there is long discussion about furnishing with shabby chic. Okay, I totally get (and once was there) the idea of furnishing with funky parts of things (remember the craze for tractor seats?) in a home; however, I have to admit to being a bit shocked when I saw rather low to middling grade furniture from the 1970s being incorporated into dĂŠcor. Okay, so maybe the realization that my lifetime is too new for antiques, but what got me was the outrageous prices being paid for stuff. Oh, this mirror is made out of plastic. It is so light and portable, and it only cost me $500. What?! Somehow the disconnect has been made not only that furnishing is a good thing, but that a high price on cheap is not necessarily a bargain. I think the latter is probably the curse of the antiques market where people will see something of quality and then buy the cheap knockoff or reproduction. I recall when the “Antiques Roadshowâ€? valued a Baltimore Album quilt very high. For weeks thereafter, we were inundated with calls from people who had generic Victorian crazy quilts and

Early Propaganda Tools To Go On View In A New Exhibition “Promoting America: Maps Of The Colonies And The New Republic Will Show How Maps Fueled European Imagination Ever since the first attempts by the English to colonize America, artists and mapmakers used maps as a savvy marketing tactic to portray the New World as both abundant and rich in land and resources, often portraying America as a latter-day Garden of Eden. A new exhibition, “Promoting America: Maps of the Colonies and the New Republic, will open on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, and will shed new light on this topic. Through 21 extraordinary objects, including maps (several of which have never before been exhibited in Colonial Williamsburg and a few of which are recent acquisitions), prints, glass transfers, books and more, visitors will
gain insights into how the promise of a good and prosperous life in the New World was communicated. The exhibition, the first in a new gallery dedicated to maps, prints and drawings in the recently expanded Art Museums building, will remain on view through March 27, 2022. “More than cartographic records, early maps are often pieces of propaganda,â€? said Roald L. Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for museums, preservation, and historic resources. “This exhibition allows guests to see how subtle messages were embedded into these everyday objects.â€? images of the native population of America as decorative elements to promote the promise of a life of opportunity there. By the 17th and 18th centuries, however, mapmakers used a variety of visual strategies to promote ideas and values intended to encourage laying claim to land in the New World. “My favorite maps in the collection are the ones that tell us a much larger story rather than those that simply record the geography of a particular region. Each of the maps chosen for this exhibition was designed either to encourage immigration to America or to promote the vastness of America’s natural
resources,” said Margaret Beck Pritchard, deputy chief curator at Colonial Williamsburg. Among the highlights of the exhibition is a map of New England by Captain John Smith, its cartographer, and William Hole, its engraver. Originally published in 1616, this line engraving on laid paper was printed in London in 1624. After charting the New England coastline, Smith returned to England with valuable geographic information and great enthusiasm for establishing a colony at Plymouth. As English interests had moved from one of discovery and exploration of the New World to establishing settlements and claiming land there, Smith labeled this map with recognizable English names rather than meticulously identified Indian towns as he

This map, “New England,” Captain John Smith, cartographer, and Williams Hold, engraver, London, England, from 1624 (originally published in 1616), with line engraving on laid paper, was a museum purchase, 1972-37.
“A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA” by Henry Schenck Tanner, cartographer, engraver and publisher, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1822, with line engraving on laid paper with hand-coloring, was a museum purchase, 1997-5. rative details in his map of North America showed a century earlier, by early in the 19th century, natural wonders were regarded as symbols of Americans’ national pride. The cartouche on Tanner’s map combined images of both Niagara Falls and Virginia’s Natural Bridge along with other symbolic forms of American fauna such as a rattlesnake, a beaver, and an eagle. “Promoting America: Maps of the Colonies and the New Republic” is co-curated by Ms. Pritchard and Ms. McKinney. It will be on view in the The Michael L. and Carolyn C. McNamara Gallery and was generously funded by Rex and Pat Lucke.

The Native American on the left of the decorative cartouche points to the title as if to confirm the assertion that the area represented belonged to Britain, while the figure on the right points to the thriving commercial activity along the shore. The latest dated map in “Promoting America” is another highlight of the exhibition, Henry Schenck Tanner’s “A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA,” made in Philadelphia in 1822. This map, considered to be the most significant of the American West produced during the early 19th century, incorporated information from discoveries made by Merriwether Lewis and William Clark (1804-06), Zebulon Pike

Valley encouraged new North American map production as officials and colonists alike needed accurate records of the continent’s land, waterways, forts, and settlements. Maps were also essential for domestic political reasons because they delineated and legitimized boundaries and helped to define British economic interests. Illustrating these points in the exhibition is “A MAP of the BRITISH EMPIRE in AMERICA with the FRENCH and SPANISH SETTLEMENTS adjacent thereto” made by London cartographer Henry Popple in 1773. Several features of Popple’s map reveal the motivation behind its production. The sheer size of the map suggested England’s dominant role in America. It was the largest printed map of North America made before the Revolution. The title appears to be etched onto a stone tablet upon which British holdings were identified as part of her “empire,” but French and Spanish holdings were described as “settlements.”
