Simple Goods Fall Show Scheduled For Nov. 6 Country Show To Be Held At Heritage Community Center In Berlin, Ohio For 15 years, the Simple Goods show has been held on the first Saturday of November and the last Saturday in April. The fall edition of the Simple Goods show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Heritage Community Center in Berlin, Ohio. The show was moved to Berlin, Ohio, several years ago, and the small town has been very welcoming. It offers hotels, food, shops and entertainment along with its beautiful countryside setting. Simple Goods is a walled show with the booths looking like rooms from early homes. It is an all-country antiques and primitives show, but there are a few handmade, one-of-a-kind booths mixed in to help decorators of new material for the various seasons. Shoppers will find booths full of early antique country furniture in original paint and surface along with all the essentials of an early home. At the last Simple Goods show in April, exhibitor Linda Spowart of L. K. Spowart Antiques from Girard, Ohio, had a Connecticut 12-pane cupboard in putty paint, ca. 1790, in her booth. Show-goers could find a 17th century shoe-foot table and an early spiral candleholder in the booth of Sharon Clymer of American Harvest Antiques from Paducah, Ky. Matt Ehresman of Wadsworth, Ohio, was showing a quality three-drawer, square nailed spice chest. There was a little of
everything at the show, even an old stone kitchen sink found in Kris and Paul Casucci’s booth. “Our customers faithfully line up early to get in when the doors open at 9. The show has over 50 dealers who travel from 16 states from the Midwest to the East Coast,” mentioned show promoter Christina Hummel. “The dealers are mostly our ‘regulars’ with a few new dealers added each show. They are very knowledgeable and well-known in the country antiques market. The dealers and customers interact as friends, creating a feeling of a ‘Simple Goods family.’ Some of the customers are known to travel quite far, some fly to the show. Our customers are enthusiastic,” continued Hummel. “We strive to make the show a happy experience for everyone. There are porters to help with large items, tables and chairs to take a break while shopping, and the Simple Goods Cafe is open during the show with a full menu. The ladies in the cafe make delicious homemade soup, sandwiches, and cupcakes,” said Hummel. The show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Heritage Community Center building is located at 3558 U.S. Route 62 in Berlin, Ohio. Admission is $5. For additional information, call Christina Hummel at 570-651-5781. Continued on page 12

displayed some of their Chinese porcelains. These brackets are exceptionally carved, with fluid lines of interlaced leafage, monograms, shells and figures. The adage that good things come in small packages definitely applies to these pieces. There is also a wonderfully carved oak marble-top console table decorated with satyr faces and continuing to cloven feet. This impressive piece would have made quite the statement in its European country house. Also of note is the sporting art from the collection. John Frederick Herring Sr., Henry Alken Sr., Charles Towne, Harry Hall and Sawrey Gilpin are all represented, with classic English depictions of horses in the 19th century. These dynamic equestrian portraits capture an era of landed gentry and the celebration of horse racing and fox hunting. Complementing the Guest collection is property from the estate of Mimi Adler. Mrs. Adler and her late husband, Max, also collected sporting art, silver, English and American furniture and Chinese Export armorial porcelain. Of particular note is an exceptional oil painting by the celebrated 18th century British sporting artist James Seymour (1702-52). “Hare Coursing” is a superb picture that would be a welcomed addition to any serious collector. Also included in this collection is a portrait of a gentleman on horseback by John N. Sartorius. The work captures the essence of an 18th-century English gentleman riding in the countryside on a big bay horse. This picture has all the hallmarks of showcasing the high societal status of the rider. The Adlers also collected a wide variety of both English and American furniture. They Continued on page 12

Collector Chats with Peter S. Seibert This Week: Multigenerationality
By Peter Seibert This summer, oldest daughter Jane headed off to graduate school and her first apartment. I was looking forward to this to see what she
would pick to furnish her digs. She had grown up living in many houses across the country and, of course, with lots of different antiques. So I thought it would be a blast giving her a Victorian or Arts and Crafts or even a high style Moderne apartment. What she chose was a very 1970s look. Where in the blazes did that aesthetic come from? It was retro but not to a period or style that I thought was interesting. Where did it come from? Then I remembered the idea that children often pattern their behaviors and styles on their grandparents. While her experiences with her grandparents were not in the 1970s, their home was decorated
in that style. Similarly, my grandparents’ home was decorated in a late Victorian style with a healthy dose of the 1920s and so that was where my first tastes gravitated. Some years ago, I got myself into trouble by stating that antiques have a cyclical nature and that collectors should not be upset when what they value is not shared by the next generation. Collectors screamed far and wide when I wrote that the problem was not that younger collectors lacked good taste but rather that they had different tastes. I also added the barb that young collectors were not willing to pay the prior
generation’s premium prices on the antiques. A bit nasty on my part, but very true. As I look at my daughter, I realize that it is true that kids pursue what their grandparents owned and not what their parents collected. Maybe Jane will want to collect what I do or maybe it will fall to her kids someday to like the really old stuff that grandpa likes. I am proud that Jane does not want new furniture out of the box with the exception of bookshelves. Am I bummed that the horde of Victorian furniture that I am saving for her is probably going to auction? Not really. She has her own style and taste. When one looks at the
history of collecting, this generational approach is certainly very true. For example, many of us who are Generation X grew up with golden oak in our grandparent’s homes. These were furnishings that our grandparents did not necessarily buy originally but which they had gotten through inheritance and used in their kitchens. My generation loved that look, and you saw it beginning in the 1980s and continuing until the last decade or so—a fascination with pressed oak furniture that is directly attributable to grandparents’ kitchen furnishings in the 1960s. So my daughter’s kitschy 1970s home is not that far apart from others in her generation. It really represents both the fascination and warmth that we have as a generation for what our
grandparents owned and decorated with in their homes.
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

LiveAuctioneers will continue to operate with its headquarters in New York City and be led by CEO Phil Michaelson. A Century’s Worth Of Animation Art Makes History
Mary Blair’s “Peter Pan” original concept/color key painting (Walt Disney, 1953) sold for $72,000. realized from every single major animation studio: Disney, Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera, Fleischer Studios, MGM and Melendez Films. The auction had a record turnout and was a near sellout, with more than 1,700 production cels, conceptual paintings, drawings, sketches and even statues finding new homes, where they will dazzle new generations as they delighted previous ones. And a bulk of works featured in this auction were consigned by a who’s-who of animation greats, as well as their estates and archives. Among the estimable lot contributing to this landmark sale: Chuck Jones, Ham Luske, Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw,
record for vintage animation art. The artwork that brings a lifetime of smiles has hit a new benchmark.” Blair’s name appears over and over at the top of the list of prices realized during the sale, which totaled $4,547,071. Eight of the top 10 pieces sold last weekend were Blair’s, feasting on rainbows, indeed. It was a staggering, recordsetting run, one that was interrupted only by two Warner Brothers rarities featuring “Bugs Bunny” and “Marvin the Martian,” which likewise hit highwater marks at auction. At the top of the weekend’s list was one of Blair’s conceptual paintings for “Peter Pan” made in 1953, in
which Tinker Bell and Peter Pan lead Wendy, John and Michael past Big Ben on their way to Never Land. It was joined atop that list by a work painted a decade later, when Disney summoned Blair to help create a “boat ride celebrating the children of the world” for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City, which became “It’s a Small World.” Each painting sold for $72,000, setting new world records for Blair’s works sold at auction. The previous record was the $66,000 realized in 2019 for a castle façade concept painting made for “It’s a Small World.” On Saturday, another of Blair’s concept paintings made for the attraction likewise sold for $66,000. Blair, one of the queens of animation, dominated the sale’s top spots: Her concept painting of Peter Pan and Wendy watch Captain Hook and Mr. Smee row their way to shore sold for $48,000. A “Peter Pan” painting of four mermaids and the Jolly Roger realized $45,600. A concept painting of the castle from 1950’s “Cinderella” sold for $43,200. And a conceptual painting of “Alice and the White Rabbit” made for 1951’s “Alice in Wonderland” brought $40,800. One of the rarest vintage Warner Brothers cels ever to flicker at Heritage Auctions, a moment from 1946’s “HairRaising Hare” featuring “Bugs Bunny” and the hirsute Gossamer, cracked the top 10 when it sold Friday for $52,800. Not far behind was a work so extraordinary and iconic that 25 years ago it was displayed at the Warner Brothers Animation Art Exhibit at Youngstown State University: the raygun-pointing “Marvin the Martian” as seen in 1952’s “Hasty Hare,” directed by Chuck Jones. The work sold in this auction for $48,000. Another Jones-directed classic, “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” also stole the hearts of bidders during this sale. Two production cels from one heartwarming scene, during which the
reformed, blue-eyed “Grinch” shares dinner with Cindy-Lou Who and his dog Max, sold for $15,600. From Disneyland itself came Disney animation great Eyvind Earle’s signed painting

Biographer John Canemaker once wrote that Mary Blair’s conceptual paintings for such films as “Alice in Wonderland,” “Peter Pan” and “Cinderella” were “as delicious as feasting on rainbows.” Blair was Walt Disney’s favorite artist, and over the three-day weekend sale held Aug. 6, 7, and 8, she was the favorite, too. More than 4,400 bidders participated in Heritage Auctions’ record-setting $4.5million Animation Art Signature Auction. Memphis Property Was Bought In 1957 property at 3764 Highway 51 in Memphis, Tenn. It was printed on Virginia Grant Realty Company letterhead and included Virginia Grant’s handwritten agreement, stating the Presleys would trade their property on Audubon Drive in Memphis for $55,000 credit, plus an extra $90,000 to purchase Graceland. Inkwells were not elaborate until around the 16th century in Europe. The wealthy originally considered writing to be a lowly, demeaning task, but when the decorative inkwells started Continued on page 15

acquired objects from the top dealers in the field such as Israel Sack Inc., Hirschl and Adler, James Robinson, Arthur Ackerman & Son Inc., Mallet and Richard Green. The collection includes a Regency ebony-inlaid mahogany breakfront bookcase. With its delicately interlaced mullions, vibrant veneers and well-balanced proportions, the cabinet is truly a statement piece and would be the highlight of any room and collection. There is also a magnificent 18th-century George III carved giltwood looking glass. This piece is a masterpiece of the Rococo aesthetic. The flowing carving of foliage and scrolls is exceptional. Acquired from the New York firm Israel Sack Inc. is a superb Liverpool “Success to America” cider jug. Emblazoned with the American flag and eagle, this piece drums up patriotic fervor like no other. Israel Sack also sold the Adlers a great Federal writing desk that is signed by the Providence, R.I., cabinetmaker William Clark. It’s a true historical document of American cabinetmaking. Another respected New York gallery, Hirschl and Adler, sold the couple a quintessential Severin Roesen “Still Life of Fruit.” The picture is brilliantly colored and symbolic of a
bountiful and prosperous America. Continuing along the theme of fine art, the NAMITS collection features a diverse selection of contemporary art from around the globe. The Belgian artist Charlotte Culot manages to capture a bold, yet light and airy feeling from her work titled “Au Coeur de Blanc.” This abstract representation of light white and yellow colors draws the viewer in and creates a calming effect that soothes the soul. The celebrated French artist Francois Bard doesn’t disappoint with his portrait bust of a man. Filled with frenetic energy and textured paint strokes, this work is mysterious and a visual delight. Continuing along with European artists from different private collections is a small group of Pablo Picasso ceramics. These colorful and beautifully sculpted pieces offer a great opportunity to own something designed by one of the world’s most celebrated artists. Complementing the Picasso ceramics is property from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Peter G. Terian, including a pair of Percival Lafer green upholstered lounge chairs that feature clean, rectilinear modern lines. The collection also boasts an Edward Wormely for Dunbar single-drawer console table. Light and airy, this piece appears to be inspired by
antiquesandauctionnews.net Chinese altar tables. A Philip and Kelvin Laverne table from Continued from page 1 another collector also dovetails nicely with the aforementioned pieces. The Millbrook School (Millbrook, N.Y.) has approved a selection of property to be deaccessed. Pieces include a watercolor by the French impressionist painter Paul Emile Pissarro. Continuing in the footsteps of his father, Camille Pissarro, and his godfather, Claude Monet, Paul’s work is evocative of these master technicians. There is also a nice selection of Chinese Export Blue Fitzhugh ceramics. This is a perfect opportunity for graduates to purchase a piece of their childhood and support The carved stone sink came from the the school that launched them Hudson River Valley. “It’s a real survivor used as a front step for many years,” said into adulthood. their tune. They decided it was now in good taste to use them, and their usage spread around the world. It has been said, war inspires inventions. The Civil War produced the portable inkwell, since correspondence was necessary from the battlefield. Wells were equipped with a lid and were safely housed in a box, known as a compendium. The lid also kept the ink from drying out, and traveling artists and writers soon began utilizing them. Ceramic inkwells made in Victorian era times depicted pictorial representations of cities that a tourist could buy as a souvenir.

The demise of the inkwell was caused by the invention of the typewriter and the fountain pen. Most collectors now buy inkwells for display. As shown in the photo, inkwells can be very elaborate. Inkwells made of Bakelite were popular, which is a versatile, plastic-like substance. The examples shown include two American Zephyr Swivodex Art Deco inkwells. Swivodex inkwells can be tilted without spilling any ink. Also shown is a Peacock tin that holds blue ink, a Carter’s cobalt bottle for red fountain pen ink, and a clear ink bottle with an amber Bakelite handle.
These and many more inkwells can be purchased at the Grist Mill Antiques Center, 127 Hanover St., Pemberton, N.J. The multi-dealer shop is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas. For more information, call 609-726-1588.
