Massive Collection Of Antique Cigar Advertising, Country Store, Breweriana, And Coca-Cola To Be Sold Rich Penn Event Slated For Nov. 4,
And 6
History can often repeat itself. This will be the case at the next Rich Penn Auction on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 4, 5, and 6, in Waterloo, Iowa, at the Waterloo Convention Center. The preview will be on Friday, Nov. 4, from 8 to 10 a.m., and from 10 a.m.
piece of cigar advertising ever sold.
until noon, approximately 200 lots will sell to in-house bidders only. There will be no internet bidding until the cataloged auction begins at noon. This is a special opportunity for those in attendance.
This exceptional auction includes what some call the finest
“We sold it at one of our first auctions 20 years ago,” stated Penn. The stunning six panels of reverse paint and gold leaf on beveled glass measures an impressive 10 feet long. It is the only one known to exist and is considered a classic example of antique advertising. Signed by “Fay, Minneapolis,” this sign reportedly hung in a building in the Twin Cities. It represented cigars distributed by W. S. Conrad, the largest wholesale tobacco business in that part of the country. In 1889, his business at 341 Jackson St. in St. Paul, the Conrad Tobacco House, was selling an estimated 15 million cigars a year. El Paterno, Sight Draft and Juan de Fuca were three of the brands distributed. The masterpiece likely hung in the Conrad Tobacco House and is an important piece of Americana and Minnesota cigar history.
There are many other examples of cigar advertising. One of the other featured lots is an Indian Chief cast zinc figure crafted ca. 1880 by the renowned Wm. Demuth Co. of New York, and ex. Allan Katz.
This is one of Demuth’s figures featured in “Artists in Wood,” by Fried, F., 1970, pg 54. Other cigar advertising will include a framed reverse paint on glass sign with Mother of Pearl and gold leaf, selling Caswell Club, King of Domestic Cigars, ca. 1900.
A wide selection of other advertising includes a round serving tray with an elegant lady about to enjoy a glass of JerseyCreme, “The Perfect Drink.” This ca. 1890 rare colorful litho-onmetal shows a blue-eyed blonde infant for “The Black Crow Stocken.” For chewing gum collectors, Kis-Me Gum was “The Popular Favorite.” So is their self-framed tin sign, ca. 1910 by American Art Sign Co., Brooklyn, N.Y.
Over the course of the three days will be antique tin toys, windups, cast-iron, mechanical banks, and air rifles and cap guns, all perfect candidates for surprises under the Christmas tree. There’s a long, nearly endless list of early Daisy air rifles in this auction.
Country store pieces are always a hallmark of a Rich Penn Auction. This auction is no exception. Spool cabinets, ribbon cabinets, dye cabinets, cane cases, sack racks, scales and a large variety of rare candy jars will all be included. The selection of candy jars is exceptional. Dakota jars include nearly every size, including the largest cylinders.
Rarity can also come in a small size. Fountain pens were a typical staple in drug stores and jewelry stores. Parker and Sheaffer’s fountain pens could be found in every home and office. On day one will be the largest and finest collection of fountain pens Penn has ever
The 6 foot,
zinc metal cigar store indian is ex. Allan Katz, crafted ca. 1880 by Wm. Demuth Co. of New York and featured in a number of publications. In good condition throughout, it has an older provincial polychrome finish in realistic tones over undisturbed original paint layer remnants and scattered encrustation. Close examination shows an old partial but stable break to the right hand thumb and some minor wear/scuffing to one foot at base, no other apparent evidence of repairs or restoration.
sold, easily covering 125 years of production from many of the most famous brand names: Conklin, Eversharp, Montblanc, Moore, Parker, Pelikan, Sheaffer’s, Waterman and others. All will make unique stocking stuffers for Christmas gifts.
For those thinking Christmas, there is a large selection of Santas, literally a “convocation” of Clauses.

Turn-Of-The-Century Motor Vehicles Roar Off The Auction Block
Petroliana And Advertising, General Store, Steam, Railroad,
Three rare, turn-of-thecentury motor vehicles, a 1907 REO Model A five-passenger touring car, an 1899 Stanley Stanhope No. 1 “Locomobile” and a prototype of the 1911 Model H REO pickup truck, sped away for a combined $120,950 in Miller & Miller Auctions’ online-only Petroliana and Advertising Auction held on Sept. 10 in Ontario, Canada. All figures quoted are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium.
The 1899 Stanley Stanhope Model No. 1 “Locomobile,” made by the Locomobile Company of America, was the auction’s top lot, selling for $44,250. It was very popular and quickly became known as the “Stanley Steamer” due to its quiet but powerful twocylinder steam engine. The literature boasted it “weighs less than 400 pounds and is odorless and noiseless when in use.”
The 1907 REO Model A
five-passenger touring car sold within estimate for $41,300. This early and unusual vehicle was the brainchild of Ransom E. Olds (creator of the curved dash Oldsmobile). It was restored in 2006. For years the car was on proud display at Richard Bennett’s Horseless Carriage Museum in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. All three top lots came out of the museum.
The eye-catching variant and potential prototype of the 1911 Model H REO pickup truck, made by the REO Motor Truck Company in Lansing, Michigan, had been fully restored and featured signage for the merchant “Ballantine & Taby” ($35,400). Ads for the truck (also designed by R. E. Olds) claimed it could “do the work of three horse-drawn trucks at less than half the cost.”
“For decades Richard Bennett added unusual items to his museum,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Buyers clamored to own what he collected. It was an exciting sale. Brass-era vehicles added the ‘wow factor’ to an auction that was packed with automobilia, steam engines, advertising and music

machines. All categories were received with enthusiasm.”
“While categories in mature markets such as brass-era automobiles performed slightly beneath what we expected, gas/oil and soda advertising performed well beyond our estimates. His vehicles in the auction helped boost the sale’s overall gross to $553,951,” added Miller
The 408-lot auction included petroliana (gas station collectibles), advertising signs, general store, steam, railroad, automobilia, music
machines and bicycles. Around 500 people registered to bid, using the Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. website (www.MillerandMiller Auctions.com) and Live Auctioneers.com, and 99 percent of lots sold.
A 1940s Canadian White Rose Gasoline double-sided porcelain sign with “Slate Boy” graphic, four feet in diameter and marked “The W. F. Vilas Co. Ltd. Cowansville P.Q.” on the lower edge, blew past its $20,000 high estimate to finish at $24,780, while a White Continued on page 5

Rose Service Station threepiece sign from 1947, each piece single-sided porcelain, 36 inches in diameter with the banners measuring 15.5by-94.5 inches, marked “P&M 47” lower left, hit $14,160.
A Canadian Ford V8 dealer double-sided porcelain die-cut sign from the 1930s, 35.25-by-28 inches, boasting a graphic of Henry Ford’s revolutionary V8 engine, changed hands for $23,600. Also, a 1940s Canadian Supertest Gasoline doublesided porcelain sign, four feet in diameter, showing the iconic Supertest maple leaf logo, exhibited some minor porcelain loss around the frame mounting holes but still brought $20,060.
A rare Canadian Red Indian Marathon Gasoline pump globe, 16.5-by-16.5 inches, with the graphics fired to the exterior surface of the globe, went to a determined bidder for $17,700, while a Canadian Red Indian Cyclo Gasoline pump globe, same dimensions (“Cyclo Gas / No-Knock Motor Fuel”), realized $8,850. Both of these 1920s-era, one-piece baked glass gas pump globes were discovered in Waterloo,
Ontario, and were purportedly never installed on pumps.
A Canadian Red Indian Gasoline single-sided porcelain dealer sign from the 1930s, five feet in diameter, marked “The W. F. Vilas Co. Ltd. Cowansville P. Q.” on the lower edge, with just a few scattered patches of porcelain loss, fetched $11,800. Also, a Canadian White Rose Gasoline double-sided porcelain dealer sign from the 1940s, a stout 48 inches in diameter, with the porcelain featuring exceptional gloss but also some stress hairlines, rose to $10,620.
A ca. 1890 Paillard Grand Orchestral Cylinder Swiss music box, in excellent cosmetic and working condition, able to play 10 tunes with its organ, drum, castanet and bells, in a rosewood and burled wood case on a matching stand, played a sweet tune for $9,440. Also, an English 53-inch highwheel bicycle from the 1880s, made from painted tubular construction with rubber wheels, decaled “Simpsons Bicycle Shop Cycles and Sporting Goods, Ont.,” garnered $8,260.
A single-sided tin CocaCola “turtle-back” sign from the 1920s, also American,
embossed and still with the original hanging chain, went for $7,080. The sign was depicted in Alan Petretti’s book, “Coca-Cola
Collectibles,” on page 203. For more information, email info@millerandmiller auctions.com or visit www.millerandmiller auctions.com.

Kevin And Jill Parker’s Route 32 Auctions And Indy Ad Show Join Morphy Auctions Family
Dan Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions, recently announced that Route 32 Auctions and the iconic Indy Ad Show, formerly owned by Kevin and Jill Parker of Crawfordsville, Ind., are now part of Morphy Auctions’ organization.
“Dealing with Kevin and Jill was one of the easiest and most enjoyable transactions I can recall since opening our gallery in 1997,” said Morphy.
“The Parkers have a genuine love for the types of antiques
they sell and collect, and they are people of impeccable integrity. They’ve always run their businesses honestly and professionally, with an emphasis on treating all customers with respect.
That’s exactly the way we strive to conduct ourselves at Morphy Auctions, so welcoming Route 32 and the legendary Indy Ad Show to our operation feels like branches of the same family coming together.”
The Parkers have owned
Route 32 Auctions for the past five years and The Indy Ad Show for four years. Kevin and his team will continue to manage the show for at least the first year that it is under Morphy ownership (next show date is May 5 and 6, 2023). He will also represent Morphy’s at major trade shows and seek consignments.
The Parkers have chosen to take a new direction in their lives so they can spend more time with their family, especially their five grandchildren, and continue to collect antiques. As Kevin explained, he and Jill initially established Route 32 Auctions as a casual pursuit, a pipeline through which they could buy for and sell from their own collections. But over time, the auction house became bigger, and it took on a life of its own.
“This year and last year we held 30 auctions. It became more than we wanted to manage. We never expected it. Our talks with Morphy Auctions started when I mentioned in passing to John Mihovetz, who has been a friend for a long time, that we were thinking about selling our businesses,” commented Kevin. “I had always felt that Morphy’s was a very respectable, high-end
operation, with employees who have a positive outlook. They want to be there, doing the jobs they do.”
“I also never forgot how welcoming Dan was when I attended my first auction at Morphy’s. I was a competitor, but he still invited me into his office for a chat, shook my hand and said, ‘If there’s ever anything I can do to help, let me know.’ So I asked John whether he thought Morphy’s might have an
interest in our businesses. That got him excited, and he went to Dan and Tom Tolworthy, Morphy’s CEO, with the idea. They were immediately on board.”
Kevin said he and Jill are looking forward to traveling more and being able to “build work into it” at their own unpressured pace. “What I truly love is meeting people and looking at collections. That comes naturally to me, having a sales background,”
he said. “This will put the spark back into our own collecting interests. Jill has a full-size country store with a barber shop and soda fountain. She loves anything that’s antique advertising.”
Petroliana and Antique Advertising are two of Morphy Auctions’ most active divisions.
