By James Fritz
Among the most stunning structures of the early 19th century is the landmark Jacob and Juliana Middlekauff Manor, ca. 1810, located at 530 Flohr’s Church Road in McKnightstown, Pa. In the year 2017, the structure was entered on the National Register of Historic Places administered by the U. S. Department of the Interior. It is certainly one of the most significant mansions of its period within the constellation of storied structures of Adams County, Pa.
This author asserts that Middlekauf Manor is Adams County’s answer to Wheatland, ca. 1828, the home of President James Buchanan (1791-1868), located in Lancaster, Pa. Buchanan’s term was from 1857 until the eve of the American Civil War in 1861.
Middlekauff Manor was constructed ca. 1810 on a parcel of land at the foothills of the South Mountain. The landscape speaks of a gentlemen farmer’s prosperity and station in life. Upon visiting this location, even today, one is struck by the serenity and a sweeping view of the surrounding fields and blue mountain landscape. For a moment, one’s imagination returns them to what it must have been like in the first quarter of the 19th century. Suzanne Youngblood has meticulously and passionately restored the dwelling house and surrounding outbuildings and grounds. The interior furnishings reflect the time period and decorations that one would have encountered in this magnificent country estate. This site and building reflect the epitome of turn-of-the-19th century Adams County farm life.
The Middlekauff family are descended from Johann Peter Mittelkauff, who came to America in 1728 from Wachenheim, which was then located in the Rheinland-Palatinate (Germany). Historian/owner Suzanne Youngblood relates, “There were other squatters in the area prior to the survey of 1765. Records indicate that John Buchanan was a squatter in 1740 on the acreage, acquired by the Cross family in 1777, and later acquired by Jacob and Juliana Middlekauff in 1798, located about one mile east of the village (Cashtown).”
Middlekauff Manor is in the Federal style and plain, yet presents to the world the epitome of a wellto-do 19th-century gentlemen farmer’s manor house. The exterior and interior has been carefully preserved with original unpainted walls, cabinets and trim. The outbuildings have been restored, and the doors and windows retain their original hardware. It is the kind of structure that is quintessentially
George Frick and the Frick Company has been a household name in the region for over 150 years. In 1853, the Frick Company was established to build horsepowered and steam engines under the patents of Peter Geiser. These engines would revolutionize history by greatly reducing the time and labor it took to harvest and process grain.
In 1861, the large two-story Frick Co. building was erected on Broad Street in Waynesboro, Pa., to manufacture and distribute these amazing machines. The “Eclipse on Wheels” was the first portable steam engine produced by the Frick Co. in 1874. It was primarily used for threshing grain, ginning cotton, sawing lumber, and, on occasion, transportation. In 1876, the “Eclipse” was presented with the gold medal for best in its class at the Centennial Exposition, the first official World’s Fair held in

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert
This Week: I Don’t Get It
a while, and I figured the seller should have been anxious to flip it.
By Peter Seibert
The other week, an interesting document appeared online. It was a piece that would have fit nicely into my collection, and, while not priced crazy, it was no bargain either. I have reached a point in tempering my purchases to those that are within the range of my pocketbook.
card buying of antiques is always a dangerous and slippery slope.
So I made an offer on the item. My price was about 20 percent off the asking price. My rationale was that the piece had been for sale quite

Philadelphia. Then, in 1880, the Frick’s “Eclipse” engine bested 25 other competitors at the great exhibition in Melbourne, Australia.
The sales of steam engines reached their peak with an annual sale of 700 engines per year in the first decade of the 20th century. The Frick steam engine business came to an end in 1945. In the 70 years between 1876 and 1945, the Frick Co. sold nearly 13,000 portable and small stationary engines and roughly 4,500 traction engines.
Now for the first time in many years, one of these rare
Well, the seller came back stating that they could not drop it more than around 7 percent. I rolled my eyes on this. I get frustrated with sellers on any online platform who will only drop pennies on the dollar. Sorry, but the point of “make an offer” is to sell the item at something reasonably less than the asking price. I’m not talking half off, but more like the 10 to 20 percent off that one sees as the standard discount in most antiques malls.
Okay, so maybe the seller had too much tied up in the piece to justify accepting my offer. That I get. Every dealer has paid too much sometimes for an item. You then are caught with either taking a loss or waiting for the market to catch up. Selling in the secondary market is always challenging. One wants to find that sweet spot where buyers will quickly purchase an item.
Having grown up at the flea markets in Adamstown, I recall many “museum booths,” as we used to call them. These
were booths or tables usually tended by little old men whose wives refused to allow them to bring stuff home anymore. As a result, they would try to sell, their pieces priced often as much as 100 times the current market. If someone were dumb enough to pay, then they would take the money and run. This phenomenon was also supported by the abundance of price guides in the old days that created an artificial inflation of pricing. Sunday after Sunday, they would sit there and enjoy their collection, safe in knowing the answer to the question from their wife of what sold on Sunday. “Why, nothing sold this Sunday. Too many lookers and cheapskates.” And thus both the integrity of the pricing and the sanctity of the booth were preserved.
My next step with this dealer was to offer a trade. Figuring him/her as someone who was looking to flip merchandise and specialized in paper, I made a couple of offers, including Civil War soldier photographs, 19th-century tradesmen
photography and manner books. Wow, the terse response I got back froze my keyboard. Clearly not interested.
Online selling attracts everyone from the skilled to the dangerously amateur. I just need to remind myself of that every time I fail to bring home the deal.
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.
steam engines will come to public auction. Hurley Auctions of Greencastle, Pa., is honored to conduct a live public sale of one of George Frick’s first steam engines, the “Eclipse on Wheels.” The auction will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, starting at 8:30 a.m. at 305 Roxbury Road, Newville, Pa., and will include an entire estate of tractors, blacksmithing and railroad items, truckloads of furniture, antiques, and tools. Multiple auctioneers will be selling all day.
Photos of items may be viewed at www.hurley auctions.com, and items will
be available for inspection an hour prior to the start of the auction.

The Buchanan Family Connection with John Buchanan
John Buchanan (1705-73), an ancestor of President James Buchanan, is included
Mansion in the history of the Middlekauff family due to both families owning and occupying part of the same parcel of land. This is validated by deeds. An archaeological dig was a serendipitous find. In the year 2005, hundreds of artifacts were uncovered, which included fine china and pottery shards, early wine bottles, decorative plaster, pipe stems, brass and pewter buttons, iron implements and early coins, 1795 Spanish real and a King George coin. Perhaps the
most significant artifact was an iron stove plate dated 1748, most likely from a five-plate jamb stove. This helps validate the settlement date and that of the Buchanan dwelling, ca. 1740,
which stood on the land of today’s manor.
In this author’s opinion, the manor should be celebrated as among the most outstanding and intact
examples of an early 19th century southcentral Pennsylvania farm that reached the apogee of prosperity in its time period.

explained Matthew Quinn, CGC Trading Cards vice president. The Martinez Illustrator promo card is from 1998 and depicts one of the most popular Pokémon characters, Pikachu.
is pretty much the holy grail of Pokémon card collecting. It is in gem mint condition, one of the finest known. It is gorgeous, stunning, a 9.5 on the 10-point grading scale, and we estimate it would bring $1 million or more in an auction,” stated Quinn. Martinez acquired the
card in a private transaction in September and submitted it to CGC Trading Cards for authentication and grading.
He described it as the “crème de la crème” of Pokémon cards. “I couldn’t
have asked for anything better,” he said. Before joining the Raiders this month as an inside linebacker, Martinez previously played for the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants. In addition to being a professional athlete, Martinez is a collector and dealer of trading cards under the name Blake’s Breaks.
CGC Trading Cards is a division of Sarasota, Floridabased Certified Guaranty Company, which is part of the Certified Collectibles Group, the world’s largest third-party authentication, grading, and certification service for trading cards, coins, comic books, and other collectibles.
