Rich Penn Presents Fall Three-Day Sale Nov. 12 To 14 Auction Will Be Three Sessions At Two Sites With Everything From Tiffany To Steiff To Rolls-Royce Rich Penn will hold a three-day auction of over 1,700 lots plus uncataloged sessions beginning Friday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m., in the main floor of the Historic Black’s Department Store Building at 501 Sycamore St. in downtown Waterloo, Iowa. This impressive eight-story building, built in 1913, was once recognized as “the Midwest’s finest department store.” It serves as the perfect venue for a walk through time of a still elegant interior showcasing fantastic offerings, which will all sell unreserved. The sale features the collection of Verner and Donna Nelson and will sell only to on-site bidders. There will be no internet participation until the cataloged session, beginning at noon.
“Excavating the 501 building was a real adventure. Great pieces were stuffed away on just about every floor. In the catalog session at noon, if there were to be a department store for stained glass, this could be the beginning. Dozens of stained glass window sets with monumental examples from the early 1900s are included. Numerous entryways with doors and sidelights and several with overhead stained bay panels will all be sold. Those entries could welcome you into homes with elaborately carved Victorian furnishings including mantles, marble topped dressers, dining tables and carved chairs sets, even a Hallet & Davis Concert Grand piano. For the more traditional era homes, there
is country pine, oak ice boxes, stacking bookcases and more. Also offered are early apothecary wall cabinets and a variety of country store cabinetry, plus post office and bank teller windows. With well over 200 room ready pieces to choose from, there is something to fit any collector’s home,” according to Penn. Other unusual offerings include a monumental five-footdiameter copper cheese vat and a Brunswick “Monarch” pool table, as well as vintage and antique floor showcases. For the aspiring publisher, there is a Chandler & Price ca. 1900 printing press with hundreds of cuts and historic local advertising signs from the area. Session two and three

excited the show is back after not being held last year. The hours will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is $5. The Edward Walls Building at the Cecil County Fairgrounds will host the show. Signs will be posted. “We have such a great variety of dealers from all over the East Coast who you don’t often see set up nearby,” said Taylor, who runs four semiannual shows in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. “Holding eight shows a year keeps me busy, and I attend many other dealers’ shows as well as an exhibitor. I think since I started out as a dealer myself and remain a dealer, it helps me be more in touch with show protocols and dealer needs. This marks my 20th year in the antiques business. I just can’t even believe it. Things have changed so dramatically with the advent of online buying and selling, yet people still love getting together and shopping in person. Antiques are tangible things. Each item (is) unique, and often they possess character (that) can be better experienced in person. I think that is one thing which draws people to love old, often utilitarian pieces,” continued Taylor. “I knew the love of country primitives ran high in the tri-state area, so I wanted to bring unique

Early Manhattan Stoneware Jug With Incised Ship Among Expected Stars At Next Crocker Farm Sale Absentee, Online Format Auction Runs From Nov. 5 To 19 Crocker Farm, a stoneware and redware auction company based in Sparks, Md., holds three sales a year. Since their spring 2020 sale, they have sold $8 million of ceramics. Their next absentee, online format sale will be held from Friday, Nov. 5, to Friday, Nov. 19, with a callback session on Saturday, Nov. 20, on lots that reach $3,000 and over. Recently surfaced in the South, a stoneware jug with profuse incised decoration of a sailing ship with American flag, from Manhattan, N.Y., probably Crolius family, ca. 1791-92, is among the expected top lots. This masterwork from the Manhattan potting tradition features possibly the finest rendering of a sailing ship seen in American stoneware. Festooned with 20 sails and replete with incised and impressed circular details throughout, this design also depicts one of the earliest images of an American flag on an American-made ceramic object. The 14 stars on the large flag at the ship’s stern date this jug ca. 1791-92, after the admission of Vermont into the Union.
Its craftsmanship and subject matter serve as a document in clay for the burgeoning reliance on quality, domestically-produced goods in a young America, then 15 or 16 years old. Coupling high artistic appeal with exceptionally early American history, this work is regarded among the most important examples of 18thcentury pottery produced in this country. quality dealers together in Cecil County for a day of fellowship, fun, and of course selling. The show boasts 35 dealers who specialize in a variety of country primitives that make this show special. It is a nice Christmas gift shopping opportunity.” “My daddy used to joke that this was the stuff that families would often burn when he was a boy. He couldn’t wrap his head around the idea of decorating with primitive.” Taylor’s father passed away shortly before the Elkton show was started. “I think he would be proud of me for getting good people together and hosting a fun show. He would have loved that even if he was still shaking his head over the concept of country primitive,” furthered Taylor. To learn more, call Cecilia Taylor at 302-981-7250.

Christmas is a common theme for many of the exhibitors offering decorations from a hundred or more years ago. Christmas shopping in New York begins the weekend before Thanksgiving on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20 and 21, at the Salt City Antiques Show in Syracuse. On that weekend, over 150 exhibiting dealers will be offering their collections to home decorators and Christmas shoppers at the New York State Fairgrounds Horticulture Building. The show didn’t take place last year and is now entering its fourth decade, a longtime favorite for upstate collectors and Christmas shoppers regardless
of the weather. The show’s emphasis is finding great gift ideas for Christmas and Hanukkah. There will be wonderful stocking stuffers, jewelry, and antique furnishings. Don’t worry about supply chain issues here, as there is no problem with the supply of great gifts at this show. Connecticut dealer Easter Hill Antiques will offer early furniture and accessories. As 2021 draws to a close, it’s time to give thanks for family, friends, health, and the joy and satisfaction that collecting antiques brings. It’s also time to visit the Haddon Heights Antiques Center to check out the latest special sales display, which is dedicated to the Thanksgiving holiday and all that it entails. Haddon Heights is a great place to start for anyone looking for an antique or vintage turkey platter or turkey salt and pepper shakers. Many people want a distinctive vintage centerpiece or some antique candle holders. Antiques have character new items can’t convey. A vintage Pyrex bowl like the one grandmother used is great to use for that recipe she handed down. All that and more is likely to be found in the sales case display and all around the twostory shop. Variety and an ongoing, generous discount policy are just two of the many reasons for the Haddon Heights Antique Center’s loyal customer base. The shop is located just off I-295 at 531 Clements Bridge Road where Haddon Heights and Barrington meet at the railroad tracks in Barrington, N.J. It is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For directions or more information, call 856-546-0555.

On Monday, Nov. 15, Hindman Auctions will offer the Henry Fitz Jr. archive of photographic history. Forgotten since the 1930s, a cache of some of the earliest photographic portraits taken in America was recently discovered in an unheated shed near Peconic, Long Island. It has been heralded as a “national, if not international treasure” by Grant Romer, a photo historian and curator emeritus of the George Eastman Museum, the world’s recognized home of photographic history. The archive consists of 22 daguerreotype portraits of Henry Fitz Jr. (1808-63) and his family taken between 1840 and 1842. The daguerreotype, a process used to capture an image on a silver-plated sheet of copper made sensitive to light, was introduced to the United States from France in the spring of 1839. A complete description of the process became available later that fall, and entrepreneurs in New York and Philadelphia raced to be the first to produce marketable photographs. Fitz, along with partners Alexander Wolcott and John Johnson, won the race. Fitz, a New York city telescope maker, also helped develop what would become the first patented camera in America. In January 1840, he sat for some of the earliest successful photographic portraits taken in America, including a small profile image found in the recent discovery. A mere handful of these early portraits from the dawn of

American photography have survived. “Imagine a world with no ability to capture a photographic portrait,” said Wes Cowan, vice chair of Hindman Auctions. “Once you wrap your head around that, the Fitz portrait is a window into the beginnings of a technology that would forever change the world and how we see ourselves in it.” “Any scholar interested in the history of photography in America has heard of Fitz and knows that he sat for some of the earliest portraits taken. When I first saw the collection, the hair on my arm literally stood on end,” added Cowan. The Fitz collection descended through the family of his son, George Wells Fitz (1860-1934), and includes several additional portraits of Henry Fitz, his wife and sister, and other images presumed to be members of his family.
Ironically, the collection has been known since the 1930s when another son, “Harry” Fitz, donated a group of early daguerreotypes to the Smithsonian Institution. Among this group was a portrait of their father claimed by the Fitz family to be the earliest self portrait of a living human. Harry urged the Smithsonian to contact George to acquire additional historically important Fitz family property, but nothing came of it. And so, the archive lay forgotten in George’s workshop and office in a shed behind the family home in Peconic for nearly eight decades. It was discovered in early 2020 in preparation of the sale of the property. “As one of the earliest surviving photographic portraits in America, the Fitz profile is, of course, incredibly important,” according to Romer. “But
This daguerreotype portrait of Henry Fitz Jr. was taken some time during January of 1840 and is one of the earliest surviving photographic portraits taken in America. frankly, the collection in total represents an extraordinary opportunity for scholars to understand the first few months of the development of a technology and art that would change the world. It really demands to be preserved.” For further information, visit www.hindmanauctions.com.
