From King Henry VII’s seizure of the throne in 1485 to the death of his granddaughter Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, England’s Tudor monarchs used art to legitimize and glorify their tumultuous reigns. On view at The Met until Jan. 8, 2023, “The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England” will trace the transformation of the arts under their rule through more than 100 objects, including iconic portraits, spectacular tapestries, manuscripts, sculpture, and armor, from both the museum collection and international lenders.

The exhibition is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cleveland Museum of Art, in collaboration with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

“This magnificent exhibition brings the stunning majesty and compelling drama of the Tudor dynasty to life,” said Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French director of The Met. “By examining the wider political and societal context in which these sumptuous goods and extraordinary portraits were made, we can appreciate both their exquisite beauty as works of art and the complex and often turbulent stories they tell.”

Exhibition co-curator Elizabeth Cleland, curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, added: “The sense of majesty that the Tudors crafted around themselves was so successful that, even now, we need to take a step back and remind ourselves just how tenuous their claim to the throne actually was and how many challenges they were facing.”

“English Renaissance literature of this time, particularly the plays of William Shakespeare, continues to be world famous today,” added exhibition co-curator Adam Eaker, associate curator in the Department of European Paintings. “This exhibition gives us the opportunity to introduce The Met’s audiences to the stunning visual arts of the period and the ways that both artists and patrons used imagery to navigate the treacherous waters of court life. Rather than an illustrated history of the Tudor monarchy, it offers a fresh look at the incredible figurative and decorative arts made or acquired for the court.”

Exhibition Overview

England under the volatile Tudor dynasty was a thriving home for the arts. An international community of artists and merchants,

many of them religious refugees from across Europe, navigated the high-stakes demands of royal patrons against the backdrop of shifting political relationships with mainland Europe. The Tudor courts were truly cosmopolitan, boasting the work of Florentine sculptors, German painters, Flemish weavers, and Europe’s best armorers, goldsmiths, and printers, while also contributing to the emergence of a distinctly English style. This exhibition features works of art made under the patronage of all five Tudor monarchs: Henry VII (reigned 1485–1509), Henry VIII (1509–47), Edward VI (1547–53), Mary I (1553–58), and Elizabeth I (1558–1603). It is organized thematically in five sections within an overall exhibition design that evokes the long galleries and intimate alcoves that defined Tudor palace architecture.

Deriving their power from Henry VII’s seizure of the throne in 1485, concluding the Wars of the Roses, all five monarchs of the Tudor dynasty grappled with crises of legitimacy and succession.

Beginning with a spectacular group of Italian bronze sculptures (reunited here for the first time since the 17th century) from a never-completed tomb for Henry VIII, the exhibition’s first section, “Inventing a Dynasty,” shows how the Tudors

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Will Anyone Care In

20 Years?

The other evening I was showing my youngest daughter some of my mother’s jewelry that I had set aside for her years ago. My mother passed in 2001, and so I had carefully gone through everything with the idea that I would pass on the best to my children to remember their grandmother.

My mother and grandmother were of a generation that loved jewelry, and when I cleared things out after my mother’s passing, I found that I had more than enough for both daughters. Therefore, I established three mental buckets for all

the jewelry. The best, and smallest category of all, went into the safety deposit box. Then there was the fun or costume jewelry that was reserved for the girls when they had a need for a quick and casual piece. And then the middling grade of things, but not sterling or gold. It was the latter that I was showing to Mary around the kitchen table. She loved the pieces and tried many of them on. My mother and grandmother were both small women, so at 11, Mary could wear most of it, with some pieces starting to get a bit tight.

About three quarters of the way through the boxes, she looked up and asked me if anyone would care about all of this jewelry in 20 years. It caused me great pause when she said that because I was not sure of my answer. I think that good style will always remain in style. A blue blazer or a black cocktail dress will not go out of fashion ever. Or

will it? I struggle with the seemingly constant race today to be as casual and tacky as we possibly can when it comes to our attire.

I just got an invitation to an event that has the clothing description as being “smart fall casual.” So ever the antimodernist, I went online to look it up. What I found was that as long as I did not wear a tee shirt and sandals, I was okay to wear almost anything since “smart fall casual” was a state of mind.

I raise all of this in my column because antique jewelry, in my opinion, never goes out of style. A Zuni bracelet or a great piece of costume Trifari jewelry will always look good, regardless of where you are. But that is my curmudgeonly view, and perhaps in 20 years, only giant earrings and Apple watches will be all that remains of jewelry.

That sure sounds depressing, and my guess is that these fads will pass just as quickly as they arrived. Fine jewelry

Milestone Beats Santa To The Punch With A Dec. 10 Winter Toy Extravaganza

Among Many Expected Stars Is 1978 Kenner “Star Wars” Jawa Vinyl-Cape Action Figure

Every antique toy collector dreams of finding something rare and exotic under the Christmas tree, and sometimes those dreams come true. But there is an alternative that offers much better odds. Those who don’t want to risk receiving a clip-on tie or box of stale chocolates can find and bid on hundreds of rare and beautiful toys in Milestone Auctions’ Winter Toy Extravaganza on Saturday, Dec. 10. The suburban Cleveland company may be known for

selling every type of high-end collectible from antique firearms to vintage petroliana, but toys are special to the Milestone crew. It’s one of the categories upon which their brand was founded, and its following amongst collectors is rock solid.

“Because we’ve been involved with antique toys for so long, we understand what collectors want. We travel constantly, visiting collections and estates, attending shows, and

following up on leads in person. We leave no stone unturned,” said Milestone Auctions coowner Miles King. “We’re especially excited about the Dec. 10 sale because it contains some of the rarest and finest toys we’ve ever handled. Some come with their extremely scarce original boxes, and many are fresh to the market.”

Robots and space toys have always found the atmosphere welcoming at Milestone’s events, and expectations are high for the approximately four dozen extraterrestrial entries in the sale. Highlights start with an original Yonezawa (Japan) tin windup Diamond Planet Robot displaying a rare blue body with red arms color scheme. It is one of the most elusive of all postWWII robots, and few have ever appeared at auction.

“The 10-inch-high Diamond Planet is actually the largest windup robot ever produced. It has a great look with its prominent googly eyes, detailed chest gauges and sparks that are visible through a red gel when the toy is activated. Many collectors will be chasing this robot,” predicted King. Accompanied by a high-quality repro pictorial box, the all-original Diamond Planet Robot will cross the auction block with a $30,000-$50,000 estimate.

From the coveted Masudaya Gang of Five lineup of big, boxy, battery-operated tin robots comes an eye-catching 15-inchtall Target Robot. An exceptional original example sporting bright colors and a high gloss, the artfully detailed Japanese classic is complete, in working order (when tested) and accompanied by the correct dart gun and dart for shooting at the robot’s bright-red chest target. Its auction estimate is $12,000-$15,000.

Also from another celestial realm, a place where no man has gone before, is a fantastic rarity: a 1978 Kenner “Star Wars” Jawa vinyl-cape action figure on a crisp 12 Back-A card with clear bubble. Among the most desirable of all early Kenner “Star Wars” figures, Milestone’s Jawa is in beautiful condition and was recently AFA graded 80+ Near Mint. A similar example with a lower grade of

will always have a place, and fun retro jewelry will be the go-to for the newly chic. So yes, my daughter, there will always be room for antique and collectible jewelry.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Milestone

AFA 80 was sold earlier this year by another respected auction house for nearly $41,000, supporting Milestone’s estimate of $40,000-$50,000.

A second “Star Wars” lot to watch is an original Early Bird Mailer Kit containing examples of the original four figures from Kenner’s 1977 “Star Wars” series: Luke Skywalker with his double-telescoping lightsaber, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2D2. Complete with its original bags, pins, tray, mailer box with mailing label and catalog, this kit is ready for grading. The estimate is $6,000-$8,000.

The 873-lot auction is brimming with rare European tin toys, and who better to lead the parade than Mickey Mouse, who never seems to

age even though he just turned 94 years old. Milestone is proud to present a Disney classic: a rare, original and complete Distler Mickey Mouse Organ Grinder (Hurdy-Gurdy) with the unheard addition of its original pictorial box. In excellent condition with bright colors and wonderful graphics, the German-made toy qualifies for the description of “museum quality” and is offered with a $25,000-$35,000 estimate.

Also by Distler, the comical tin windup Directional Policeman car in all-original working condition is so rare, even Milestone’s toy specialists have never seen another one like it. With a rich palette of colors and graphics exhibiting all sort of vehicles, people, dogs and driving-related symbols, this incredibly rare toy could reach $10,000-$15,000 on auction day.

Other European tin highlights include an all-original, boxed Lehmann (Germany) windup “Snick Snack” depicting a well-dressed gentleman walking two dogs on “leashes,” est. $8,000-$10,000, and a Victor Bonnet (France, successor to Fernand Martin)

“Madelon Casseuse D’Assiettes,” a tin windup maid in cloth attire who struggles to keep a stack of tin plates from toppling over. Like the Lehmann Snick Snack, Madelon is in excellent condition and retains its scarce original box.

The toy collecting community is still chattering about the boxed Linemar batteryoperated Popeye and Olive Oyl tank that sold for a worldrecord $105,000 at Milestone’s April 9 auction. The cartoon couple returns to the spotlight in this auction in the form of two Linemar f5-inch tin

mechanical nodders. Both the Popeye and Olive figures are 100 percent original and complete, and each comes with the near original box (replaced top flap on both). The toys will be auctioned consecutively, each with a $2,500-$3,500 estimate.

Milestone Auctions’ Winter Toy Extravaganza will be held at the company’s gallery located at 38198 Willoughby Parkway, Willoughby (suburban Cleveland), Ohio. Start time will be 10 a.m. ET. All forms of remote bidding will be available, including absentee and live online through Milestone’s bidding platform or LiveAuctioneers.

For additional information on any item in the sale, call 440-527-8060 or email info@milestoneauctions.com.

devoted vast resources to crafting a public image as divinely ordained sovereigns, shoring up their tenuous claim to the throne. A series of portraits will introduce visitors to the five Tudor monarchs; included here are the exceptional loans of Hans Holbein the Younger’s portrait of Henry VIII from the Museo Nacional Thyssen Bornemisza in Madrid and the “Sieve Portrait” of Elizabeth I by Quentin Metsys the Younger from the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena.

The next section, “Splendor,” evokes the ornately layered interiors of Tudor palaces, filled with figurative plasterwork, tapestries, metalwork, and the lavishly dressed bodies of the courtiers themselves. As monarchs traveled between residences, portable furnishings transported their magnificence with them. Tapestries woven in richly dyed wools,

silks, and metal-wrapped threads enveloped rooms.

This section highlights the Tudor monarchs’ taste for luxurious imports from the continent, but also the work of local artists and newly arrived Flemish and French immigrants. Examples include Henry VIII’s personal book of psalms (British Library), featuring handwritten annotations by the king himself.

“Public and Private Faces” spotlights the dominance of portraiture in Tudor painting and the transformative impact that Hans Holbein the Younger (ca. 1497–1543) had on the genre.

In 16th-century England, portraits recorded status, lineage, piety, and political affiliation, as well as physical appearance.

“Languages of Ornament” illuminates how Tudor arts combined the classical, the natural, and the neomedieval, forming a uniquely English Renaissance aesthetic. Like other elites of Renaissance Europe, the Tudors were interested in the artistic legacy of ancient Greece and Rome.

Marquess of Salisbury, respectively. Facing enormous pressure as an unmarried female ruler, the queen exerted tight control over her image. Her carefully vetted portraitists drew upon the elaborate allegories devised by court poets to pay tribute to the queen and her immense powers. As the Protestant Reformation had brought about the destruction or removal of religious images from English churches, most artists focused on investing the monarch, as newly proclaimed head of the church, with an enchanted and sacred authority. At the same time, printmakers created mass-produced images that celebrated Elizabeth as a protector of the Protestant cause. The exhibition concludes with a portrait, from The Met collection, of Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, a dynamic depiction of the Stuart dynasty that came to the throne after Elizabeth’s death in 1603, ushering in a new age of artistic styles.

A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale University Press, it will be available for purchase from The Met Store. The catalogue is made possible by the Diane W. and James E. Burke Fund.

Additional support is provided by the Hata International Foundation and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.
