The production cels from the shorts, each of which cost $30,000 to produce, were thought vanished. The handrendered graphite-made production drawings were surely lost somewhere between buyouts, break-ups and bankruptcies. And there was no reason at all to believe the sketched models of Superman and Lois Lane would ever been seen again. Yet here they are, compiled by Heritage Auctions for its Dec. 11, 12, and 13 Animation Art event. More than 50 original pieces from the Fleischers’ run on “Superman,” amassed from two separate collections never before available to the public, create the largest assemblage ever to come to auction. Jim Lentz, Heritage’s director of Animation Art, says the 28 total lots being offered constitute “almost everything that exists” from the “Superman” cartoons. Perhaps, he says, this is as much as 80 to 85 percent of all the surviving artwork, enough to whet the appetites of animation scholars and collectors alike. “To have a collection like this is a once-in-a-lifetime event,” says cataloger David Tosh, Heritage’s in-house expert on the Fleischers’ work. “When I first saw it, I thought I must be dreaming. This material just doesn’t show up. In 17 years at Heritage I’ve seen a few pieces, but nothing this gorgeous. It’s mind-blowing to me.” Here, rather unbelievably, collectors will find the color model for “Superman” himself, who stands with hands on hips while animators color-code each piece of the costume rendered in graphite. Rarity is a word thrown around often in this industry, perhaps too much, diluting its meaning, and yet it applies to a slip-decorated redware molded pig bottle, stamped “D.P. SHENFELDER / READING, PA,” in Crocker Farm’s current online sale. The term applies in full force. It is the third known Shenfelder pig bottle and is estimated $8,000$12,000. The sale closes Friday, Dec. 4. At 9.25 inches long, the ca. 1870 molded bottle in the form of a reclining hog with corked drinking spout at rear was dipped in yellowish slip, decorated with dripped spots of copper and manganese slip, and covered in a clear lead glaze. One side of the pig is fashioned with a raised oval slab of clay and impressed with the mark of Daniel Peter Continued on page 6

Antique Gambling Machines Hit The Jackpot At Morphy’s Coin-Op And Advertising Sale Only Known Example Of Caille “Triple Centaur Musical Upright Slot Machine Claims Top-Lot Honors At $240,000 most authoritative collections of its type, said Tom Tolworthy, Morphy Auctions’ CEO and curator for the auction. “Collectors were aware that they might never have

another opportunity to bid on some of the rarest of gambling, vending, arcade and mechanical music devices, including the Caille slot machine. The “Triple Centaur, the most highly prized machine in Getlan’s collection, exhibits an extraordinary design that accepts nickels, quarters, and nickels, respectively, in its three separately operating sections. Because the machine is contained within a single oak housing, it enabled operators to increase their

revenues substantially while still paying for only one gambling license. In all-original condition, the “Triple Centaur had held pride of place in Getlan’s collection since the 1970s. The auction’s odds-on favorite, it sold within its expected price range for $240,000. All prices quoted in this report are inclusive of a 23-percent buyer’s premium. Also manufactured by Caille Bros., a 1904 Peerless Roulette five-cent floor model slot machine in a rich oak cabinet with decorative iron

castings gave players a choice of seven coin-slots in which to drop their nickels. The interactive experience included pulling a lever to spin the wheel, then watching the ball bounce and finally land on the payout amount. A fantastic original machine with older restoration, it sold within estimate for $186,000. The condition displayed by another rare Caille production, a five-cent “Black Cat musical upright, was nothing Continued on page 5

One of the most sought-after selections, a historically significant 1870s Procter and Gamble advertising sign, promoted Amber Soap, a brand that pre-dates even its

now-classic Ivory Soap. “It is surprising that this remarkable example of early stone lithography is not in the archives of Procter & Gamble,” according to Tolworthy. In excellent 8.0-8.5 condition, it nearly tripled its high estimate, cleaning up at $28,800. An even earlier artwork, a pre-1870 lithograph

Shenfelder of Reading, Pa., the same distinctive stamp commonly used on the potter’s stoneware pieces. Interestingly, a 1 1/2 cent postage stamp of Martha Washington, dating ca. 1938-39, is affixed to the front of the bottle, indicating it was possibly shipped in the distant past. Signed Shenfelder redware of any form is very uncommon. A stamped Shenfelder pig bottle sold through Sotheby’s in 1982 on the York Fairgrounds for the late Pauline Heilman of York, Pa. An incredible collection of ceramics including important figural Pennsylvania redware, the ex. Heilman pig bottle realized $4,000, selling to the late Harry Hartman. It was later owned by the late Lester Breininger, dealer Greg Kramer, and is currently in a Pennsylvania private collection. The glaze scheme had a more splashed green and yellowish slip over an orange ground. The example at Crocker Farm has spotted droplets of slip and less large splotches and is over a yellow-slip ground. The use of dripping slip to produce spots is uncommon in American redware and possibly a creative attempt at mimicking the coat of a spotted breed of pig. The second example, quite similiar to the Crocker Farm one in glaze treatment, is also in a Pennsylvania private collection. The example at Crocker Farm is a recent discovery to the collecting community in good overall condition, with edge wear, two minor surface flakes to pig’s back, and an inthe-firing contact mark to opposite side of pig. For additional information, call 410-472-2016. To visit the online catalog (pig bottle is Lot #200A), visit www.crockerfarm.com.

Parents and grandparents often saved coins and very often knew precisely what they had. Unfortunately, this was usually not communicated to the family members who ultimately inherited the coins. We once had a family who inherited four coffee cans filled with less than $1,000 face value in coins. They were preparing to deposit them into the local bank at face value when I explained that they were “junk silver coins. Ultimately, I was able to convert those four coffee cans of coins into approximately $25,500 for the family. Let’s take a quick look at the types of coins typically found in estate situations. Face Value Coins This is basic pocket change and worth no more, and no

less, than face value. This would include standard pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters, and halves, as well as most Susan B. Anthony, Sacajawea, and Eisenhower Dollar Coins. Numismatic Coins These are “Collectible Coins and carry a premium value based upon such factors as coin type (Morgan Silver Dollar, Indian Head Cent, etc.), year, mint mark, and condition. Value can range from face value to thousands-of-times face value. Junk Silver Coins These coins usually don’t carry much “numismatic value, but, because they are 90 percent pure silver, they will always have “silver value. The value of these coins will fluctuate based upon the silver spot price.
