The only known poster from “The Day the Music Died” became the most expensive concert poster of all time when a Winter Dance Party poster from Feb. 3, 1959, sold for a record-setting $447,000 at Heritage Auctions on Nov. 11.

The poster’s final price, realized after a bidding war that ended with an auction room erupting into applause, shattered the previous record price of $275,000 previously held by a Beatles 1966 Shea Stadium concert poster, which sold at Heritage on April 18, 2022.

It’s no surprise this is now the most valuable concert poster in the world, as it dates from the very day Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, J.P. Richardson, were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, on their way to a show in Moorhead, Minn. The musicians were en route to the Moorhead Armory as part of the Winter Dance Party tour when their single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza crashed in a cornfield. This is the only known poster from the concert that inexplicably wasn’t canceled “The Day the Music Died,” as Don McLean famously called it in his song “American Pie.”

“Heritage is thrilled to break the previous record for a concert poster by more than $170,000,”

said Pete Howard, director of Concert Posters at Heritage Auctions, “but not the least bit surprised, given the importance, the uniqueness and the gravitas of this amazing window card, which advertised rock and roll’s first tragedy.”

The poster was one of 43 sold during the first session of the three-day Music Memorabilia Signature Auction. The first day not only saw a new record, but exceeded all expectations when it realized a total of $684,943.

Session one marked just the second time a Winter Dance Party tour poster has been offered through Heritage. In April 2020, previously unseen cardboard from the Jan. 25, 1959, show at the Kato Ballroom in Mankato, Minn., realized $125,000.

The poster that sold on Nov. 11 might well be the only one ever discovered. It originally had been affixed (not nailed) to a telephone pole in advance of the 12th stop on the tour but fell to the ground; there are no pinholes, only the residue of the sticky material used to keep it in place. The maintenance man who found it placed the poster in a closet, face down, where it was stored for 50 years.

Witman Auctioneers Inc., Manheim, Pa., held an auction on Nov. 12, at the Lebanon Expo Center at 80 Rocherty Road in Lebanon. It was a diverse sale with contemporary folk art, old cars, firearms, pottery, and much more.

The following prices were realized and include a buyer’s premium:

An Abner Zook, 1990, three-dimensional diorama covered bridge winter snow scene sold for $17,000.

Abner Zook (1921-2010) and twin brother Aaron (1921-2003) were

Amish visual artists known for elaborate three-dimensional diorama sculptured paintings. The work from both of them is highly collectible today. Two Aaron Zook three-imensional circular diorama bird plates sold for $1,540 each. A Conestoga

covered wagon with team of horses, made by relative Joel Zook, realized $5,500.

A 1976 Ford Mustang Ghia sold for $14,850, and a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Sedan, $13,200. A Ruger M77 rifle

Automobilia Collection Kept Bidders Engaged At Milestone’s Auction

The multifaceted collection of the late Mark Smith was the cornerstone of an exciting $613,000 event held at Milestone Auctions’ suburban Cleveland, Ohio, gallery on Oct. 15. Smith, a Virginia businessman, was a passionate collector of automotive advertising and memorabilia, a reflection of his involvement in the car industry. But there was much more to Smith’s collecting interests than just motoring, said Miles King, co-owner of Milestone Auctions.

“Approximately 500 lots in the 740-lot auction came from Mark’s collection, and the variety showed very clearly that he didn’t place any restrictions on what he bought. He had a great eye and excellent instincts. If something appealed to him, he bought it. He was also very shrewd about buying up rare car and motorcycle parts, which only grew in value over the years. In the run-up to the sale, our phones rang constantly with inquiries about those parts,” stated King.

The categories offered on auction day, which included additional select consignments, included jukeboxes and coin-op machines, salesman’s samples, pottery and stoneware, art glass lamps, Coca-Cola trays and signs, coins and currency, movie posters, shaving mugs, figural match holders and many other specialties.

Sleek classic cars grabbed

their share of attention at the well-attended preview. A 1936 Packard 1407 Coupe with classic Art Deco styling was complete with a V12 473-cubic-inch 175hp engine and original three-speed transmission. It boasted a clean, straight, Dietrich-style body and a kicky rumble seat. The 86-year-old luxury ride had obviously been pampered, as its odometer reading was only 64,033 miles. Prior to the auction, King remarked that the engine purred so smoothly, it could barely be heard. It was no surprise that the head-turning beauty, accompanied by an extensive assortment of extra parts, commanded a withinestimate winning bid of $140,400.

A car that captivates collectors today even more so than it did in 1956, a Chevrolet Corvette C1 Convertible, raced to an above-high-estimate price of $78,975. It was one of only 3,467 of its type produced in 1956 and showed an odometer reading of 94,681 actual miles. The car was a good-looking older repaint that had acquired a desirable natural patina over time. The attractive red interior was a

match made in heaven for its black and silver exterior.

Vintage automotive and motorcycle parts, which received bids from all over the United States, were led by a single-cylinder cutaway motor for a 1916 Model K Indian motorcycle. With its condition graded a remarkable 9 out of 10, the antique part sold for $6,000.

Mark Smith amassed an extensive collection of rare racing signs and advertising.

Mass Produced Stupidity Kills “Magic: The Gathering”?

collectible card game that premiered back in 1993 by a small upstart company, Wizards of the Coast. It is almost like playing a game of chess set in a fantasy universe, but with cards instead of chess pieces.

Trends and speculative bubbles in the antiques and collectibles trade are nothing new. When younger collectors come to me wanting advice on how to best enter the antiques and collectibles trade, most are horrified to learn that the study of finance, economics, and business is what I recommend above anything else. This advice fell on deaf ears for most of my life, but with the emergence of social media and hype-driven influencers pushing everything from comic books and trading cards to toys annd video games as possible investments, the advice is important more now than ever. I have said it once, and I will say it again, the only constant in the antiques and collectibles trade is change. There are very few collectibles that I would recommend anyone put away in a safe deposit box for decades or more as a long-term investment. This does not mean opportunity for investment does not exist; it just means that the game has forever changed. If you want proof, just ask anyone my age who has lived through the baseball card bubble of the late 1980s, the Beanie Baby bubble of the mid-1990s, and the then modern era “Star Wars” collecting bubble of the late 1990s. Companies that manufacture collectible-based products are notorious for destroying their own brands while in pursuit of short-term profit. This brings us to the world of “Magic: The Gathering.”

For the uninitiated, “Magic: The Gathering” is a fantasy role playing

“Magic: The Gathering” was a brilliant concept because the gameplay mechanics could change with the creation of new cards. This kept the game fresh, and slowly but surely more and more players were attracted to it. Today, Wizards of the Coast is owned by behemoth toy giant Hasbro, which incidentally was also the maker of all those late 1990s and later “Star Wars” figures that ended up in toy store bargain bins.

Ironically, this still doesn’t stop starry-eyed speculators from incorrectly declaring that since “Star Wars” is one of the most valuable licensed properties of all time, every toy imprinted with the words “Star Wars” on it must be a great financial investment.

Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth, as “Magic: The Gathering” collectors will soon learn.

When Hasbro originally acquired the “Magic: The Gathering” card game in 1999, it looked like the company was going to continue going in the same direction as Wizards of the Coast originally intended. The company did a very good job of creating a limited amount of products and also adhering to the controversial, but necessary, reserve list. The reserve list is a listing of several rare and out-of-print “Magic: The Gathering” cards that were vowed to never be printed again. This list was quite monumental at the time because when “Magic: The Gathering” first premiered, few could have imagined that certain highprofile cards would be in demand on the secondary market. Unfortunately, the game playing public went nuts for certain cards, and prices started to spike. Mind you, when I say spike, back in 1996, very few “Magic: The Gathering” cards were selling for more

than $30. Still, $30 was a lot of money to players of a game in its infancy, and as a result, the company promised not to reprint certain cards for fear of the prices collapsing on the secondary market, thus devaluing a player’s collection. The reserve list was upheld prominently by the makers of “Magic: The Gathering” for decades to come.

Fast forward to right around 2016, and things started to change. It became rather apparent that someone at Hasbro started to see “Magic: The Gathering” as a relatively easy cash cow to exploit. So called “Magic: The Gathering” finance channels started to gain popularity on YouTube, and speculation and hoarding of factory-sealed products and cards was helping to add millions to Hasbro’s bottom line. Wall Street took notice, and even those in the speculator community began to refer to this as “MTG (short for ‘Magic: The Gathering’) finance.” Hasbro saw what was possible and started to release more and more sets. They released different formats, hidden masterpiece cards that would be like chase cards purposely hidden in various packs, limited-edition products, collector-edition products, and even products that you had to access a special website for a limited time to be able to order. For all intents and purposes, “Magic: The Gathering” appeared to have lost its way.

Then the pandemic came, and people got sent money to stay at home. Collectible card games like “Magic: The Gathering” and “Pokemon” were primary beneficiaries of this cash infusion, and starry-eyed speculators were all too eager to spend their newfound cash on meme stocks, cryptocurrency, and of course, collectibles. Hasbro made more money and did what any Wall Street darling would do, they planned more products and crossovers all designed to capture those newly printed dollars.

Things were almost working too well until some collectors and lovers of the game started to lament that Hasbro had sold out. Alas, there was still hope, until Hasbro did the unthinkable. Thanks to the reserve list no reprint policy, Hasbro was banned from printing actual tournament legal copies of their coveted cards. Mind you, some of these original reserve list cards like the coveted Black Lotus can be seen selling on the secondary market for tens of thousands of dollars. So the company made the disastrous decision to do a very low printing of these cards with updated artwork, announcing the cards would not be tournament legal. The company called the product the 30th Anniversary Edition of “Magic: The Gathering,” and for $999 a consumer would get four factory-sealed packs containing 15 cards each (60 cards total) and could potentially pull an updated version of some of the most valuable cards in the game’s history. Never has a product divided a collector base like this one. Immediately after the product became available, some prices for vintage cards crashed. Other cards spiked in value, as now newer editions of these cards were being dumped into the marketplace by would-be speculators. Countless publications and even Wall Street lamented that Hasbro, killed their proverbial golden goose. The stock price was hammered as investors soured on their ability to market the “Magic: The Gathering” to their fan base. Never before have I seen so many enthusiasts of the “Magic: The Gathering” card game agree with the “Magic: The Gathering” finance speculators about how Hasbro is potentially killing the game. Given the fact that this is still developing in real time now, the full effect of this disastrous product and its effect on the secondary market is still unknown. That said, heed my advice pop culture collectors, if you want to be successful in the antiques and collectibles trade in

is a prime example.

“It’s a new record for Manhattan stoneware,” mentioned Mark Zipp of Crocker Farm after his family’s auction company sold a stoneware presentation pitcher with incised Federal eagle decoration, impressed “JOHN, L, WESSELL,” on Nov. 19 for $264,000. Incised “New York / September 15th 1806,” attributed to the Crolius family, Manhattan, N.Y., 1806, the pitcher came out of an old collection, and the buyer is a private collector.

Ovoid in form, the 11-inchtall pitcher with footed base and ribbed handle is decorated with an incised and

cobalt-highlighted design of a spread-winged federal eagle with patriotic shield, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The sides of the pitcher are decorated with

splayed leaves. On the reverse side is the incised script “New York / September 15th 1806.” Made for local cabinetmaker John Wessells (here “Wessell”), this work features one of the earliest renderings of an eagle in the American stoneware medium, as well as one of a few eagle motifs known from the city of New York. Crafted just 30 years after America’s independence, its eagle relates to the original design from the Great Seal of the United States in 1782, depicting the bird with prominent crest, straighter beak, and upward-pointing legs. The top lot from this grouping was a canvas banner emblazoned “1940 Studebakers” and illustrated with checkered flags. “This banner was especially desirable because of its outstanding condition (graded 8.75 out of 10) and the fact that it was so complete. It even had its original shipping box,” said King. The banner sold for $8,100.

The competition amongst collectors continued as a 1930 Goodyear Second Annual Zeppelin Race Winner’s Award with repousse images of zeppelin, cars, and other modes of transportation realized $3,000, to be followed by a Bosch (racing) Equipment hood ornament in the form of the company’s mascot, a goateed and goggled red devil wearing a racing hat. All original, it sold for $2,760.

From the undersea world, two handcrafted inhabitants emerged to inspire aggressive bidding and excellent prices. A unique and nicely patinated 24-inch-long fish weathervane/lightning rod made of lead with copper fins was a prize catch at $5,640.

Another “whopper” was the cast-metal trade sign advertising fishing tackle and which displayed a 22-inchlong fish suspended from an ornamental bracket by two chains. This handsome fellow took the bait and was landed for $3,960.

The wide array of antique and vintage advertising incorporated many modes of transportation. A nautical entry with historical importance was the original circa1910 advertising sign for Cunard Lines’ RMS Mauretania. The colorful selfframed tin sign, 39-by-28 inches, bore a stately depiction of the Mauretania, a vessel that was the sister ship to the RMS Lusitania. In glossy, very fine condition, the sign sold near the top of its estimate range for $3,600.

After the sale concluded, Miles King remarked that he felt the auction would have pleased Mark Smith, who was well known in automobilia and antique advertising circles. “The things he loved and displayed so proudly during his life ended up in the hands of fellow collectors who will, in turn, respect and enjoy them. We made it our mission to represent Mark’s collection in a way that paid tribute to

Newest Episode Of PBS Series “Craft In America” Features Wharton Esherick Museum

The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) is excited to announce the premiere of the newest episode of “Craft in America,” titled “HOME,” which features

Wharton Esherick’s iconic home and studio alongside Philadelphia-based sculptor Syd Carpenter and craft icon Helen Drutt English.

The television series “Craft in America” explores “America’s creative spirit through the language and traditions of the handmade.” “HOME,” which takes on the intimate topic of home from many angles, as architecture, personal objects and effects, and as the site of our familial relationships, premieres on PBS on Friday, Dec. 16.

“Through the artists and stories represented in this

episode, “HOME” honors the significance of our surroundings, while also acknowledging the challenging histories that have shaped our ideas of it,” shares Carol Sauvion, executive director of “Craft in America.” “HOME offers a nuanced exploration of the environments we make and the personal, historical, and creative influences that shape them,” added executive producer Patricia Bischetti.

“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary as a museum, we are delighted to share Esherick’s highly

individual hand-built studio with new audiences through the ‘Craft in America’ series,” said WEM executive director Julie Siglin. “Esherick considered his home to be his autobiography. Anyone who walks through the doors of his studio can feel the unconventional and joyful creative impulse he brought to every aspect of his life.”

“Craft in America” is the Peabody Award-winning series on PBS exploring America’s creative spirit through the language and traditions of the handmade.

With 14 seasons produced since 2007, the series takes viewers on a journey to the artists, origins and techniques of American craft. Each episode contains stories from diverse regions and cultures, blending history with living practice and exploring issues of identity, ritual, philosophy and creative expression. Craft in America’s organizational efforts include educator guides that adhere to national standards and the Craft in America Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

Petroliana And Advertising Auction Delivers

Monumental Coca-Cola Sign (Canadian, 1938), Single-Sided Porcelain, Sells For $14,160

A single-family owned 1966

Ford Ranger 250 Custom Cab “Camper Special” pick-up truck

with Avion camper sold for $82,600, and a 2006 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe black cherry motorcycle roared off for $16,520 in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.’s online-only Petroliana and Advertising sale held on Oct. 29. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium.

The Ford Ranger camper pickup truck was purchased new in 1966 for hunting trips once a year, which explained in part why the odometer showed just 39,966 actual miles. The vehicle boasted parchment cab and trim, and had 100 percent of its original Sahara beige paint. It was powered by an 8cylinder, 352 c.i. engine and blasted through its pre-sale estimate of $35,000-$40,000.

The all original 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle was purchased new from Dukes HarleyDavidson in Chatham, Ontario, with accessories, for $25,387. The bike was well stored, but never used, and had an odometer reading of just 51 actual kilometers. It, too, bested its pre-sale estimate, which was $9,000-$12,000.

The 398-lot auction featured petroliana (gas station memorabilia), advertising signs,

advertising tins, breweriana (beer and wine collectibles), general store items, jukeboxes, vintage and antique toys and more. A total of 474 registered bidders placed 9,077 bids in an auction that grossed $534,215.

“Based on the numbers realized, the demand for good advertising, particularly petroliana, continues to grow,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “New buyers were stepping up for some of the top lots in this sale. Our key collectors continue to build and refine their collections. The results confirmed that ‘condition’ remains foremost on their minds.”

Online bidding was via the Miller & Miller website (www.MillerandMillerAuctio ns.com), as well as LiveAuctioneers.com.

Telephone and absentee bids were also accepted.

An American-made United Motors Service single-sided porcelain neon sign from the 1930s with the original neon, insulators, transformer and can, retaining the original orange paint, changed hands for $15,340, while a 1940s Canadian White Rose Gasoline double-sided porcelain sign, round, with iconic “Slate Boy” graphic, large at 4 feet in diameter and marked “”Vilas Enamel Products Ltd. Cowansville, Que” realized $11,210.

A 1940s American Santa Fe Trail System Bus Depot doublesided porcelain sign, 23-by-26 inches, each side featuring a detailed image of a 1940s bus in the Santa Fe system, topped out at $10,030. Also, a round McColl-Frontenac Service

This 4-by-8-foot Coca-Cola sign (Canadian, 1938), singlesided porcelain, marked “Made in Canada” and “St. Thomas Metal Signs 1938,” realized $14,160.

Station sign (Canadian, 1940s), 6 feet in diameter and doublesided porcelain, scattered scratches and porcelain losses, managed to sell above high estimate for $9,440.

Collectors of Coca-Cola memorabilia were not disappointed. Top lots included a

very large 4-by-8-foot CocaCola sign (Canadian, 1938), single-sided porcelain, marked “Made in Canada” lower right edge and “St. Thomas Metal Signs 1938” lower left edge, selling for $14,160 against an estimate of $4,000-$6,000. A

The Frick Art Reference Library, a preeminent center for art historical research, is marking 100 years since its opening by looking back at its remarkable history. A new publication, “One Hundred Objects in the Frick Art Reference Library,” commemorates the occasion through highlights drawn from the library’s extensive collections of books, rare auction catalogs, artists’ sketchbooks, photographs, and a wide range of archival holdings. The book also celebrates moments in the library’s history, from its involvement in the Monuments Men program during World War II to its development of innovative research tools.

With entries written by current and past staff members, the publication underscores the breadth of the library’s holdings, enjoyed by generations of students, scholars, and members of

the public at no charge. Over the next two years, the celebration continues with “One Hundred Years at the Library,” a series of related videos released on the Frick’s YouTube channel, and dedicated blog posts published on www.frick.org/blogs.

“There are so many ways to tell the story of this significant library, from reflections on its founder and the staff who shaped it to the collections in its care and the cutting-edge offerings for which it is known today. We hope this volume offers fresh and perhaps unexpected perspectives on the evolution of what is today one of the world’s leading research centers,” comments Stephen J. Bury, the Andrew W. Mellon chief librarian.

The publication marks the anniversary of the library opening its doors to the public for the first time, in 1922, after its founding by Helen

Clay Frick as a memorial to her father, Henry Clay Frick. The basis of its collections were data and documents she provided to him while conducting research on the artists in his collection. She drew inspiration from the Witt Library of Reproductions, established in London in the late 19th century by connoisseurs Mary and Sir Robert Witt, who was a trustee of both the National Gallery and Tate and chairman of the National Loan Collections Trust. Helen Frick’s library, whose founding collection, the Photoarchive, was the first of its kind in the United States, was initially housed in the basement bowling alley of the family residence. In early 1922, an art history class from Princeton University was the first group of researchers to visit the newly founded Frick Art Reference Library, and this event was chosen to mark the centennial, as it affirmed the

In 1935, the library opened a new permanent home, located at 10 E. 71st St. in Manhattan. The building was designed by John Russell Pope, who at the same time was transforming the Frick residence into the museum now known as The Frick Collection. Together, these two public institutions, today joined as one, would become seminal centers dedicated to the appreciation and study of art. Over the next century, the library evolved and expanded its offerings, notably embracing innovation and new technologies to broaden scholars’ access to a vast array of art historical resources. Palmer Museum Of Art Prepares For Transition To New Museum In 2023

Pennsylvania State University Art Museum Will Neighbor Botanic Gardens

In early 2023, the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State will begin a phased transition as it prepares to move from its existing building into its new facility currently under construction at the Arboretum. The changeover will start in January with the closing of the museum’s second floor and a major reinstallation of the first-floor galleries before the final closure of the current building on May 14, 2023. The new museum will open to the public in spring 2024.

“We are at a transformative point in the history of the

Palmer Museum of Art, as we look toward a bright future in our new state-of-the-art building and hope everyone will take advantage of this final opportunity to visit us in our signature Charles Mooredesigned building on Curtin Road,” said Erin Coe, director of the Palmer Museum of Art.

A compelling reinstallation of the Benjamin and Lillian K. Snowiss Galleries of American Art on the first floor of the current building will greet visitors who visit the Palmer this spring. Titled “Conversations across the Collection,” this re-envisioning of the

museum’s collection of American art will feature a diverse roster of artists from the early republic through the present. The unique reorganization will bring together both visitor favorites and objects rarely on view to invite discussion through the juxtaposition of contrasting styles, viewpoints and time periods. The unexpected pairings of paintings, prints, photographs and sculpture will be organized into multiple sections, including the American West, urban scenes, still lifes and domestic interiors, and abstraction.

“We’re excited about pairing works like Benjamin West’s ‘Venus and Adonis’ and Violet Oakley’s ‘Venus Rising From the Sea,’” noted Adam Thomas, curator of American art. “Placing the two artworks painted more than a century apart in tandem will reveal new dialogues between past and present as well as prompt conversations about our understanding of history, modernity and femininity,”

furthered Coe. Organized by the Palmer Museum, “Conversations Across the Collection” also will incorporate several recent additions to the collection, including works by Elizabeth Catlett, Ernie Barnes, Beverly McIver and Henry Ossawa Tanner. These important acquisitions are part of the Palmer Museum’s strategic goal to add works by underrepresented artists to

the permanent collection and uphold its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

On view along with the reinstallation of the Snowiss Galleries on the first floor will be the ongoing special exhibition “Designed for the Future: The New Palmer Museum of Art at the Arboretum,” which opened on Oct. 15. The exhibition focuses

on the transformational new Palmer building designed by Allied Works and allows visitors to experience the innovative and versatile design of the new museum through the architect’s model, drawings, plans, renderings and animation.

Construction of the new building for the Palmer Museum of Art began in August 2021 and has surpassed 50 percent completion. The museum will directly neighbor the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens in The Arboretum at Penn State, replacing the current facility on campus. The new 71,000square-foot museum, projected to open to the public in spring 2024, will boost accessibility to the university’s art collections

for students, faculty, staff and the public alike. Seamlessly integrating art, architecture and nature, and sited within a landscape similar to those that inspired many of the American works in its renowned collection, the new Palmer will nearly double the space for the display, study and stewardship of the collection and exhibition program. The innovative and versatile design by architect Allied Works features a series of interlocking pavilions clad in regional stone that evokes the geology of central Pennsylvania.

In keeping with Penn State’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the new museum will be a highperformance building with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

certification.

“Conversations Across the Collection” and “Designed for the Future,” as well as the Tonkin Gallery of Studio Glass and Ceramics on the first floor, will be on view until May 14, 2023, when the museum on Curtin Road will close to the public in preparation for its nearly yearlong move to the new Palmer Museum of Art at the Arboretum.

The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State is the largest art museum collection between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and the most significant academic art museum in the state of Pennsylvania. The free-admission museum, which has strong and long-standing connections with the wider local community, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022.
