Conestoga Auction Company Is Honored To Offer The Extensive Collections Of Jack And Nini Houck First Of Several Sales Slated For Jan. 8 Fern (Jack) and Nedalyn (Nini) Houck were both born in Hanover, Pa. Nini graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in 1955, and Jack graduated from Gettysburg College the same year. He received a commission in the United States Air Force, serving 22 years of active duty in numerous locations around the world, before settling back in Hanover upon retiring. Nini and Jack were dedicated volunteers in their church and community. They were both active members of the Hanover Area Historical Society. Nini was affectionately known as Hanover’s fastnacht lady. For well over 30 years, she enjoyed making fastnachts and hosting Fastnacht Day for neighbors, friends, and family at their home. Jack and Nini had a shared passion for antiquing. This prompted them to open Houck’s Antiques The Eagles Nest. Even after retiring and closing the store, their weekly attendance at local sales and going to shops continued to bring them joy. Over several decades, they became collectors of many different categories, particularly Americana, including postcards, coins, cast-iron banks and furniture. They amassed a diverse and eclectic collection. Antiquing was truly a joint effort and passion for the couple. The two celebrated 65 years of marriage in July 2020. Nini passed

away in June 2021. Jack joined her just six days later. A premier catalog sale event featuring their Americana collections will be offered at Conestoga Continued on page 2

Handwritten Page From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Hound Of The Baskervilles” Sells For $423,000 Rare Leaf From Popular Sherlock Holmes Novel Leads Historical Manuscripts Sale Past $1.4 Million

Yuletide Returns To Historic Rock Ford, And To The Year 1795 “Voices Of Yuletide Past” At Historic Rock Ford Will Be Held Dec. 26 And 27 The celebration of Yuletide is returning to Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster, Pa., Sunday and Monday, Dec. 26 and 27. After a 2020 hiatus, Yuletide 2021, “Voices of Yuletide Past,” will be offered with several new and creative twists. Rather than following the “Holiday Open House” model of past Yuletides dominated by large numbers of visitors, this year’s guests may anticipate a more intimate experience as they arrive at the General Edward Hand Mansion set to the evening of Jan. 6, 1795, “Twelfth Night.” As the residents of the house prepare for a Yuletide Ball, the presence of Hand family members, their

friends and servants will be felt, but they will not be seen. As groups of guests are escorted from room to candle-lit and hollybedecked room, they will see the sights and hear the sometimesfrenetic sounds of a household about to welcome many guests to the first Yuletide Ball to be held in the new mansion. They will also be greeted by the voices of Katherine Hand, Edward Hand, Jasper Yeates, Sarah Yeates, Dorothy Hand, young Jasper and Edward Hand as well as by that of a female servant trying to get the younger children ready for bed amid all of the excitement. More than 900 bidders were on the case at Heritage Auctions’ Historical Manuscripts Signature Auction on Nov. 6. But the day’s biggest mystery was solved when the final price for a handwritten page from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original manuscript of his beloved Sherlock Holmes book, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” turned out to be a record-shattering $423,000. The last time a leaf from the legendary manuscript was sold at auction, the year was 2012, and the price was $158,500. “This extraordinary rare page from “The Hound of the Baskervilles” shows the strength of the manuscript market around the world as Heritage continues to source the best examples for our clients,” said Joe Maddalena, Heritage Auctions executive vice president. Published in 1902, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is the novel in which Doyle brought back his most famous character after killing off the fictional detective in 1894, and it remains one of the most popular among Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books. To promote Hound’s release, as well as Holmes’ much anticipated return, the book’s publisher broke up the pages of Doyle’s manuscript and offered them Continued on page 4
