American horse-drawn cast-iron toys were led by a Dent Police Patrol Wagon, $13,200, and a Pratt & Letchworth combination fire wagon, $10,800. Rare examples of Schoenhut (Philadelphia) toys drew strong competition. Top lots included a Freihofer’s Fine Bread wagon, $7,200, and a jointed Felix the Cat figure with its original Schoenhut box, $5,700. Made to commemorate the 1892 Columbian Exposition, a seldom-seen Ives Columbus “Santa Maria egg toy of painted tin with cloth sails sold with its original box for $8,400. drove in from Iowa, previewed during the hour before the sale, then bid by phone from their hotel room. When the auction ended after midnight, they came back to collect the items they had won, using curbside pickup, then headed back to Iowa. There were several other patrons who traveled crosscountry to preview live and later bid by phone or online. Some even did so seated in their cars in Bertoia’s parking lot. Holiday antiques, highlighted by the four-decade Merck Halloween collection, generated the most excitement of any auction category. Every phone line and both bidding platforms were in use throughout the first session. “Bob Merck’s collection was well known for its quality and uncompromising condition, Michael observed. “We were selling his entire collection, so it was a now-or-never opportunity for other collectors to own something with Bob

Merck provenance. The Halloween category was further sweetened by a small but elite selection of items consigned by another private collector. The top Halloween lot was a German composition frowning tree trunk lantern candleholder, which defied all expectations. A diminutive 3.5 inches tall, it had been estimated at $700-$1,000 but ended up selling for $18,000. “Even at that price, underbidders were upset to drop out of the competition but knew they had to stop bidding at some point, Michael said. Following closely behind was another collector favorite, an 11.5-inch cloth-dressed witch disguised as a devil jack-o’-lantern, which sold for $16,800. An endearing veggie man lantern and candy container fashioned as a sticklegged pumpkin figure holding two smaller pumpkin-faced jack-o’-lanterns was bid to $14,400. The spectacular Christmas selection produced the auction’s top lot, a 35-inch-long

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT Covid Christmas, Or How I Refuse To Let It Get Me Down Beyond hunting for presents, we always look for holiday decorations. Antique and vintage decorations remain one of the best bargains in collecting—and one that you can enjoy every year as part of your own holiday traditions. They come out in droves beginning around Thanksgiving, although there are booths in antique malls and private shops that handle ornaments year-round. I always look with a bit of sadness at young couples running out to the big box store to buy some molded plastic decorations for their first tree. Sure, the tree will have the right look, but none of the substance that comes from classic (and new) glass ornaments that have a bit of history. Our tree features ornaments found from shops all over the country. A big batch came from a favorite antiques co-op just outside of Little Italy in Baltimore. A second group of ornaments was found on a hot August day at

By Peter Seibert This afternoon, we were decorating the trees and the house for Christmas. It’s a holiday tradition for us that involves both unpacking decorations and also adding in those that we have purchased during the year. In the weeks leading up to the holidays, we have been out hitting the antique shops and malls in Montana. Of course, the girls have their own collections. Jane is very into photography, so she is busy accumulating cameras. Mary loves cooking, so eggbeaters and potato ricers are on her short list. Kim likes her bling, especially if they are garnets, so an Edwardian era ring will be her gift.

Adamstown. Some early single ornaments have come from various antique-hunting jaunts, including two found about a week ago. They were early 20th century ornaments that came out of dealer’s basket full of mixed ornaments. And our favorite was the lucky discovery of a big collection of clip-on bird ornaments that came from a flea market in Albuquerque. The old ornaments mesh with the ones that the girls have selected every year for their trees, something that with the abundance of holiday shops and year-round holiday decorations that they have found in a host of locations across the country throughout the year. So as you read this article, I encourage you to hunt for those holiday decorations, not as an investment, but from the heart, and see how it fits into your home. I would add as well that all manner of holiday decorations are great collectibles.

Bottle trees, toy trains, crèche sets and other items can be found. Whether singly or en masse, they are wonderful additions to your home and to building traditions. So as the new year rolls and things hopefully begin to improve in the near future, start off by checking out the internet or local shops for holiday decorations. Make some lemonade out of lemons, and celebrate the joys of Christmas to come in 2021.

From “Peanuts” To “Pokémon,” “Batman” To “Super Mario Bros.,” Heritage Auctions Makes History Several Notable Records Were Set At Four-Day Comics And Comic Art Sale

was thrilling from start to finish. Not only was the bidding fast and furious on almost every one of the nearly 1,800 lots offered, but Heritage introduced to the market some never-before-available and hardest-to-find items that sparked interest and attention. Among the biggest hits of the star-studded event were the following: Artist Douglas Shuler’s original art for the “Magic: The Gathering ‘Demonic Tutor’” card, sold for $168,000. This was one of five iconic offerings from the Len Osborne MTG collection making their respective debuts at auction. A seldom seen copy of Action Comics No. 7, graded CGC VG 4.0, sold for $144,000, almost twice the highest price listed in the most recent Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide for a modest-condition copy of Superman’s second cover appearance. A nearly perfect CGC 9.8 Batman No. 181, from 1966, realized $90,000, the highest price ever paid for a Silver Age Dark Knight. This is perhaps partially due to charactor Poison Ivy, who makes her debut in this book. And Todd McFarlane’s original art for page 17 from 1990’s Amazing Spider-Man No. 328 brought $120,000 in its first public sale. This dazzling page, like Lee’s X-Men cover, came from the collection of Jeff Nason, who began buying original artwork when he was in high school and 30 years later decided to share them with the collecting community. Nason’s was not the only formidable collection sold.

The auction also included a part of Randy Lawrence’s headline-making, award-winning Alfred Pennyworth collection, most famous, until now, for having been stolen from a South Florida self-storage locker in January 2019. Lawrence spent nearly two years, almost entirely by himself, tracking down the purloined collection ranked among the finest in CGC’s “Batman” registry. Once returned, Lawrence decided to consign the entirety of the collection to Heritage, which auctioned off 200 Golden Age titles from what is

Those books alone shattered pre-auction expectations by realizing more than $1 million, and there remain hundreds more “Batman” books to come from Lawrence’s collection in January and February events, including his Silver Age titles. “Our expectations were

high across the board, but every category of the auction brought some results that were double or triple what we thought we could reasonably expect,” says Heritage Auctions Vice President Barry Sandoval. “It’s a great time to be a seller right now.” For additional information, visit www.HA.com.

the series’ run, and by far the oldest Heritage has ever offered, sold for $192,000, setting a record for the highest price ever paid for daily “Peanuts” panels. Snoopy, then a young pup, who, as it turns out, originally belonged to Shermy, was all bite in an auction worth barking about. “As it’s exceedingly rare to see such an early-days ‘Peanuts,’ we are thrilled but not altogether surprised to set the world record for a piece of Schulz art,” says Matt Griffin, a consignment director in Heritage’s Comics and Comic Art department. “The price realized proves the enduring appeal of Charles Schulz’s work, which remains as beloved and essential today as it was 70 years ago.” Almost 5,500 bidders participated in the four-day event that garnered worldwide attention even when it wasn’t setting records. Indeed, renowned illustrator Jim Lee took to Twitter when his and inker Scott Williams’ iconic cover art for The Uncanny X-Men No. 268, featuring Captain America and Wolverine and Black Widow, sold for $300,000. Noted DC Comics’ publisher and Chief Creative Officer, “This cover could have been yours for $650 back in 1990! That’s a 46,053 percent return on Artist Douglas Shuler’s original art for the “Magic: The investment.” Gathering ‘Demonic Tutor’” card realized $168,000. The auction

Heritage Auctions’ Nov. 19 to 22 Comics and Comic Art Auction was one for the record books. By the time the fourday, $14.2 million event wrapped up, a few world records had been set in several categories. A copy of Detective Comics No. 27 sold for $1.5 million, the highest price ever realized for a “Batman” comic book. A sealed “Pokémon” First Edition Base Set Booster Box nearly doubled a recently set world record when it collected $360,000. And when it sold for $156,000, a sealed copy of the “Super Mario Bros. 3” variant release toppled a previously set high score for a video game by more than $40,000. “Considering how many years collectors have searched for a sealed copy of ‘Super Mario Bros. 3’ from the first production run, it comes as little surprise that this was the next game to topple the previous world record,” says Heritage Auctions’ Video Game Director Valarie McLeckie. It should be noted, too, that “Super Mario Bros. 3” didn’t merely set a world record, but served as the centerpiece of the world’s first-ever milliondollar video-game auction. The “Peanuts” gang also got in on the action during the Comics and Comic Art event. A Charles Schulz strip from Nov. 17, 1950, only the 40th strip in

Textile Expert Laura Johnson Joins Winterthur Johnson Brings Vast Experience As The Institution’s First Linda Eaton Associate Curator Of Textiles Laura E. Johnson has joined Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library as the new Linda Eaton Associate Curator of Textiles. “Laura has a diverse, interesting background in both the science and interpretation of textiles, as well as textiles in design,” said Eaton, the John L. and Marjorie P. McGraw director of collections and senior curator of textiles at Winterthur. “She is a valuable addition to our fine staff, and we are thrilled that she has come home to us.” Dr. Johnson joins Winterthur from Historic New England, where she served as associate curator beginning in 2010 until

her promotion to curator in 2018 while working on a wide range of projects for its 37 historic properties and permanent collections. Johnson curated two exhibitions: “Mementos: Jewelry of Life and Love from Historic New England’s Collection” and “Head to Toe: Hats and Shoes from the collection of Historic New England.” She also worked on several textile reproductions for Beauport, Henry Davis Sleeper’s iconic Gloucester home. Johnson holds a doctorate in the History of American Civilization from the University of Delaware, as well as master’s degrees in Early American

Culture from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and in Public History from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Archaeological Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Before joining Historic New England, Johnson worked for 10 years as a contract archaeologist in Illinois, where her examination of fiber impressions in

Late Woodland pottery led her to the interpretive and textile side of material culture. As an intern at the Illinois State Museum, Johnson worked on its Amish quilt collection. Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter’s interiors for the Fred Harvey Company introduced her to the importance of considering interior design and material culture holistically, allowing her to combine her archaeological and

textile backgrounds. During her graduate studies at Winterthur, she examined the textile trade of William Penn’s provincial secretary, James Logan, and the role textiles played to create, reinforce, or sometimes break the connections between Euro-American and Indigenous groups in the early American Southeast. As a curatorial assistant, she curated the exhibition “Made for the

Trade,” an examination of some of the pieces made by Indigenous artists in Winterthur’s collection. She went on to complete a fellowship at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. “I am honored and thrilled to return to Winterthur,” stated Johnson. “I plan on continuing Linda’s outstanding work to Continued on page 7
