Morphy’s Sells Boxed “Machine Man” For New World Auction Record Of $160,000 Cast-Iron Mechanical Banks, Set Of Rare War-Themed Gum Cards Among Other Featured Items In Sale After languishing in an attic for 60 years, an extremely rare batteryoperated “Machine Man” with its original box rolled into the auction spotlight at Morphy’s Sept. 23 and 24 auction and knocked down a world-record auction price for a toy robot. Estimated at $60,000-$90,000, it swiftly made lift-off and swept past expectations to land at $160,000. The boxy, 15-inch- The ca. 1912 J. & E. PSA Gem Mint 10, 1/1. Bidding on the card ended at $720,000, more than three times its pre-auction estimate. Its final sale price lands this LeBron James card on the list of top-selling sports cards of all time, in the No. 12 spot between Mickey Mantle and Shoeless Joe Jackson. The signed piece of Staples Center floor, the Kobe-autographed No. 8, began at $230,000 and finished at $631,200, beyond its pre-auction $500,000 estimate. The hardwood slab upon which Bryant cemented his legend is an enormous piece of basketball legend in every way. It consists of four panels, each measuring 4-byeight feet, and was removed from “The House That Kobe Built” shortly after he scored a storybook 60 points on his way out the door of the Staples Center for the final time as a Laker on April 13, 2006. Its twin, the signed No. 24, is displayed at the Lakers’ practice facility. The consignor will donate 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, a nonprofit intended to further Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s legacy through charitable endeavors in sports. Michael Jordan’s 1986-87 game-worn Chicago Bulls uniform sold for $480,000, also transcending its pre-auction $300,000 estimate. The jersey and shorts were definitively photo-matched to five games dating from November 1986 through March 1987. That remarkable run included a 56-point showing against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 24 and contributed to a season that proved his most

prolific as a scorer, as he averaged 37.1 points per game. This is also the uniform he’s wearing on the Nov. 17, 1986, cover of Sports Illustrated proclaiming the 23-year-old Jordan as the “One-Man Gang.” A complete set of 1986 Fleer basketball cards, all graded PSA Gem Mint 10, sold for $216,000. The set includes Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Julius Erving, Larry Bird and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the highly coveted Jordan rookie. A pair of 1985 Michael Jordan game-worn Chicago Bulls Air Jordan I rookie sneakers likewise topped preauction expectations, selling for $117,000. They were worn by Jordan in a game against the Washington Bullets before he handed them over to a man who, moments later, sold them to a young fan who would hold on to them for decades. As befitting an event bearing Jordan’s moniker, he dominated the proceedings, so much so, a pair of game-worn Air Jordan cleats dating to his 1994 season as a Birmingham Baron sold for $84,000. But there were some young comers nipping at the heels of those Air Jordans, among them the Dallas Mavericks’ Slovenian sensation Luka Doncic. A photomatched jersey from Luka’s 2018-2019 Rookie of the Year season sold for $54,000. And it’s a win for everyone, 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of this jersey, which comes with a team letter, will go to the Mavs Foundation charity. While you are at it, feel free to check out vintage and antique advertising prices being achieved at Morphy Auctions or some of the prices realized for Tiffany Art Glass. These markets are still going strong. Younger collectors need knowledge and education. They need someone to show them these historic objects and help them realize there is a lot of money to be made in these markets given the passion and desire to learn. Let’s not forget, regardless of the market, we are talking about the use if disposable income, and whether it is the 1950s, 1970s, 1990s, or 2020, most disposable income comes when one is well established in a career and not under the age of 30 or even 40. This is one reason we are in a cycle where a lot of material is coming out. Buyers active a generation ago when in their 60s are leaving the market. In conclusion, it is important that rather than keep the information we have all learned throughout our careers in the antiques and collectibles trade a secret, we should start sharing it with younger generations. I assure you that no one reading this will live forever, but the objects we love and covet have the possibility to live on long after we are gone, and isn’t that what this is all about? Until next time, please consider sharing your knowledge with a younger collector. Thank you for reading.

as to how many clickbait articles on the internet that claim the contrary. Going back to the 25 younger collectors who have contacted me as of late. It should give any antiques connoisseur hope and went something like this, “Shawn, I’m a fan of your work and have one question—how can someone on the collectibles side of the trade learn about traditional antiques? Truthfully, this is by far my favorite question I get asked while being in this business. The question itself shows firsthand that traditional antiques’ problem isn’t a true lack of interest. No, it is something much easier to solve: a lack of education. Casual collectors in the trade may not realize this, but the reason pop-culture-based collectibles are so popular isn’t just because they are popular. It is because the barrier to collect and invest in those items is extremely low. Don’t believe me? Simply log on to the internet and start perusing collecting forums, auction sites, or even YouTube. The market for mass-produced collectibles, whether we are discussing comic books, vintage toys, vintage video games, or even Pokemon cards, is much easier to learn than that of collecting traditional antiques. Sadly, this point very rarely enters the discussion when I am talking with older dealers and collectors who worry that traditional antiques are dying. Before the financial crisis of 2008/09, I was told to cash out of my collection of traditional antiques. Looking back today in a post-pandemic world, I am glad I didn’t listen. Some of the items I have in my collection have appreciated very nicely just in the last five years. Feel free to check out the prices being achieved for

Truth be told, combining my work in the antiques and collectibles trade with my particular personality traits doesn’t always work to my advantage. I often find myself getting into some heated discussions with other collectors, columnists, dealers, and even auctioneers from time to time. Most of these heated discussions are amicable and generally contain some element of healthy debate. As I get older (and hopefully wiser), I have learned to let a lot of things go and respect other perspectives, even when I do not agree. Surprisingly to me, the articles that I write here have attracted a hardcore following from the 40 and younger crowd, who like that I tend to focus on pop culture collectibles as well as traditional antiques. Most of the readers who attempt to hunt me down on social media eventually are successful, despite the fact that I have a very small presence on FaceBook and LinkedIn. Even I’ll admit that interacting with readers, dealers, and other collectors that I would normally not cross paths with in real life has been very rewarding. Some of these discussions give me great insight and ideas for upcoming articles. I have had several interactions with dealers in the traditional antiques space and some in the highend art market. We have discussed the trade in depth, and, sadly, the dreaded topic of what the future holds for the overall antiques trade always rears its ugly head. This is where I am most proud

of my younger and passionate readers. In the past year, I have had no less than 25 collectors under the age of 30 reach out to me and ask for my advice on how to enter the antiques trade. Going solely by names and profiles when applicable, I can state with confidence that roughly twothirds of these enthusiastic collectors are male and onethird are female. All are already active in the collectibles side of the trade in some form, judging by their messages. This brings me to the primary point of this article. For the past 10 years I have been fighting against an incorrect thesis from some of my fellow dealers, collectors, and enthusiasts in the trade who seem to think that the traditional antiques market is somehow dying. Naysayers have been beating this proverbial drum since the early 2000s simply because certain antique categories have not been going as strong as they were in the 1990s. Since I am only in my 40s, using the word “hogwash as a response to these naysayers would not be appropriate here, and using any other synonym may get this article flagged by my editor. Therefore, allow me to say this, the market for traditional antiques is not dying. It is doing what it is supposed to do, change. In fact, the only constant in the overall antiques and collectibles trade is change. Let’s be realistic her; some of the collecting categories we all know and love are cyclical. They go through peaks and valleys and will still be going strong decades from now, even if they remain dormant for many years. Other markets are cyclical. Beanie Babies and Cabbage Patch Kids still aren’t coming back, regardless

The Morgan Library and Museum proudly presents “Poetry and Patronage: The Laubespine-Villeroy Library Rediscovered, which recently opened and will run through May 16, 2021. The exhibition brings together some of the most spectacular bindings from the library of Claude III de Laubespine, one of the great collectors of the French Renaissance, for the first time in almost 450 years. Young, handsome, and highborn, Laubespine lived in luxury after marrying an heiress and obtaining the favor of King Charles IX. His career at court was cut short in 1570, when he died at the age of 25, leaving behind a splendid library. The books were bequeathed to his sister, Madeleine de Villeroy, a patron of the poet Pierre de Ronsard, who praised her, her husband, and the library of her husband’s country estate. The library was eventually dispersed, and only recently have the books been identified and properly appreciated for their superb quality and fine bindings. Showcasing these exquisite examples of Renaissance ornamental design alongside related artwork and literary memorials of Laubespine, “Poetry and Patronage will evoke the pleasure and literary connoisseurship implicit in a noble library of that era. Highlights in the exhibition include a copy of Jacopo Vignola’s “Regola delli cinque ordini d’architettura (1564) in a magnificent and mysterious binding. Also included in the exhibition is “Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (1499) by Francesco Colonna, one of the greatest illustrated books of all time. Three copies are on display, one of which is in a luxurious gold powdered binding. It was a centerpiece of Laubespine’s library, a fitting representation of his collecting ambitions. “We are

Portrait By David Burliuk (1882-1967) Sells For $39,100 Weiss Auctions’ Online Sale Grossed Just Under $500,000 An oil-on-canvas portrait of a Japanese girl by David Burliuk (Ukrainian/American, 1882-1967), part of a fresh-tomarket, never before offered collection of works by Burliuk, sold for $39,100 to take top lot honors in an online estate and art auction held Sept. 16 by Weiss Auctions. Overall, the 550-lot sale grossed nearly $500,000. The portrait painting, measuring 13-by-17 inches on a relined canvas, was signed lower left by Burliuk and dated (“1922”). That painting, as well as some others, came

from the estate of Ella Jaffe Freidus, a renowned art dealer who lived in Lloyd Harbor, N.Y. She was a longtime friend of Burliuk’s. The nephew of the consignor was, at one time, Ms. Freidus’s caretaker. “There were many other lots that sold in the thousands of dollars, but the Burliuk portrait took the top prize,” said Philip Weiss of Weiss Auctions. “We had over 2,000 registered bidders on LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com, and over 1,000 of them were viewing live at the same time. It was probably the strongest bidding I have seen in years.” The catalog was highlighted by 40 lots of important Wedgwood pieces (including tri-color pieces, Egyptian series, Sphinx candlesticks and Basalt statues), high-end Nippon, original oil paintings by important listed artists, plus works on paper, Lalique lamps, Russian icons, Theo Faberge eggs, Murano and art glass, and jewelry (including gold, silver, platinum and diamonds). All prices include the buyer’s premium. An oil-on-canvas painting signed by the Danish/American artist Johann Berthelsen (1883-1972) depicting Riverside Church and Grant’s Tomb reached a respectable $9,200, despite some areas of craquelure. The work was housed in a 37.5-by32.5-inch frame. A scarce Wedgwood Black Jasperware bolted vase, 12 inches tall, showing rams heads in high relief and exhibiting no flaws at all, finished at $3,000. Also, a Nippon blown out humidor with a nautical motif, showing a fisherman in a boat, eight A ca. 1900 Seth Thomas Regulator No. inches tall, found a new owner 60 wall clock in a walnut case featuring an 8-inch brass pendulum and face with a 14-inch diameter painted metal dial and Roman numerals went for $17,250.

A 14-carat gold handmade custom flute, engraved by the maker, “Verne Q. Powell, Boston,” dated to 1951 or 1952, serial #1299, with non-gold valves and original fitted leather case, realized $17,825.

The oil-on-canvas portrait of a Japanese girl by David Burliuk The oil-on-canvas painting by French artist Michel Delacroix (b. 1933), titled “Le (Ukrainian/American, 1882-1967), 13-by-17 inches, signed lower left by Chariot Bleu,” signed lower left and signed and titled on verso, found a buyer Burliuk and dated “1922,” sold for $39,100. for $15,600. for $2,040. A large oil-on-canvas by the Russian-born French artist Constantin Kluge (1912-2003), titled “Le Café Du Coin,” signed lower right and housed in a 44-by-37-inch frame, realized $5,100, and an untitled lithograph in colors by the renowned Spanish artist Joan Miro (1893-1983), pencil signed lower right and pencil numbered (“5/300”) lower left, brought $4,680. Bitters And Midwestern Bottles And Glass Propel Glass Works Auctions To A $354,600 Payday H. P. Herb Wild Cherry Bitters Bottle, Ca. 1885-93, Made In Reading, Pa., Brings $9,000 An American Life Bitters bottle, made in Ohio, ca. 186575, sold for $42,000; a Constitution Bitters bottle made in New York, ca. 1865-75, brought $23,000; a St. Drake’s Plantation Bitters bottle patented in New York in 1862 fetched $14,000; and a pattern globular bottle made by Zanesville Glass Works in Ohio, ca. 1815-35, hit $7,500 in Premier Auction #143, held by Glass Works Auction. The online-only sale opened for bidding Sept. 21 and closed Sept. 28. The auction was headlined by two outstanding collections, the Paul and Mary Ballentine bitters bottle collection and the Don Spangler Midwestern bottles and glass collection. Of the 275 total lots in the auction, 140 found winning bidders, grossing $354,600. All traffic was driven through the website, www.glswrk-auction.com. All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium. “The Ballentines were pioneer collectors from Ohio who started collecting in the early 1960s,” said Jim Hagenbuch, the owner of Glass Works Auctions. “Paul passed away, but Mary retained the collection until her recent passing. Don Spangler is probably the last of the early collectors of early Ohio glass. At age 90, he reluctantly decided it was

The auction’s top lot was this American Life Bitters bottle (P.E. Iler, Mfg., Tiffin, Ohio), circa 1865-75, 9.25 inches tall, in a light to medium yellow color with an olive tone cabin, selling for $42,000.

amber, but only a few exist in this yellow coloration.” The Constitution Bitters bottle (Seward & Bentley, Buffalo, N.Y.), also from the Ballentine collection, was medium pink amethyst in color and was in perfect condition. The bottle (Ring/Ham, C-223), 9.25 inches tall, featured a smooth base and applied tapered collar mouth. “Only two or three are known to exist in amethyst. The others are so dark, a strong light is needed just to see the color. That is not the case here. The color in this one explodes in normal lighting and is consistent throughout. Many bitters collectors had been waiting for this bottle. Some called it the ‘Holy Grail’ of the Ballantine collection,” added Hagenbuch. The St. Drake’s 1860 Plantation X Bitters bottle (Ring/Ham, D-105), just shy of 10 inches tall and manufactured in New York around A double font teakettle ink bottle (Mathews, M427U), made in America between 1862, boasted a medium moss 1875 and 1890, opaque milk glass with applied mother of pearl panes, 2.5 green cabin, a smooth base inches tall, sold for $3,250. and applied tapered collar time to pass it on to other collectors.” The American Life Bitters bottle (P.E. Iler, Mfg., Tiffin, Ohio) was from the Ballentine collection and was the top achiever of the auction. The 9.25-inch tall bottle (Ring/Ham, A-49) had a light to medium yellow color with an olive tone cabin and featured a smooth base and applied tapered mouth. “This bottle was about perfect, save for a tiny spot of roughness on the tip of a lower log,” said Hagenbuch. “It’s rare in

mouth. A small chip off the inside edge of the lip and some light external staining on the front panel were its only flaws. “The St. Drake’s bottle was recently ‘picked’ at the Elephant Trunk flea market in Connecticut, a favored venue of the Flea Market Flip reality TV show,” stated Hagenbuch. “It’s possibly only the second known example in this unusual moss green color. In 1993, we auctioned the collection of Elmer Smith of Shelton, Wash. Lot #20 in that collection was at that time the only moss green Drake’s Plantation Bitters known, and it sold for $10,000. This one brought $4,000 more.” The pattern molded globular bottle made by the Zanesville Glass Works in Ohio was medium yellow olive in color and had a 24-rib pattern swirled to the right. The 8inch tall bottle (McK/Wil, color plate V), (Barrett, pg. 54) had a pontil scarred base and outward rolled lip. “This classic Zanesville swirl was in a very rare and absolutely gorgeous color that remained constant throughout, and the pattern remained bold even to the pontil. With the exception of a very few scratches, it was in pristine perfect condition. The bottle came out of the Don Spangler collection and had been acquired from Jim Vitners in 1973,” said Hagenbuch. An H. P. Herb Wild Cherry Bitters bottle (ca. 1885-93, made in Reading, Pa.), in the motif of a cherry tree, changed hands for $9,000. The 10.25-inch-tall bottle (Ring/Ham, H-93) had an olive yellow cabin, a smooth base and a tooled double collar mouth. “The bottle was quite rare in this pleasing coloration, and a very minor base flaw was non-offensive,”

This Constitution Bitters bottle, ca. 1865-75 (Seward & Bentley, Buffalo, N.Y.), medium pink amethyst in color and in perfect condition, 9.25 inches tall, realized $23,000. Hagenbuch pointed out. “How rare is the color? Only two have been sold at auction in the last 25 years, that’s how rare.” A John Moffat (N.Y.) Phoenix Bitters bottle (“Price 1 Dollar”), made between 1835 and 1850 and with a medium emerald green coloration, finished at $8,000. The 5.7-inch bottle (Ring/Ham, M-113) had a pontil scarred base, an outward rolled lip and was in perfect condition. “This bottle was in an extremely rare pure green color that is not recorded in Bitters Bottles by Ring/Ham. It’s one of the best. No Moffat Bitters collection would be complete without it,” according to Hagenbuch. A double font teakettle ink bottle (Mathews, M427U), made in America between 1875 and 1890, opaque milk glass with applied mother of pearl panes, each segmented by a thin amethyst colored band, changed hands for

This St. Drake’s Plantation Bitters bottle patented in New York in 1862, just shy of 10 inches tall, with a medium moss green cabin, a smooth base and applied tapered collar mouth, sold for $14,000.

$3,250. The 2.5-inch tall, 8sided bottle had a smooth base and ground lips. Both fonts had the original fancy embossed brass neck rings and hinged lids. “Double font teakettles are extremely rare, as few were ever made, and this one was near perfect,” Hagenbuch said. “The right font contained the traditional black ink, while the left contained a red. This was evident by traces of each color being on the inside of the lips. We auctioned this teakettle in 2002 when we sold the Bob Mebane collection. At the time it was the only known example, and we believe it remains so today.” Glass Works Auctions maintains offices in East Greenville, Pa., and a gallery in nearby Pennsburg.
