Special Annual Sale To Take Place Nov. 12 And 13 All year long, collectors wait for Bertoia’s Annual Fall Auction to be announced, and for good reason. Its unfailing reputation for quality and rarity makes it one of the premier highlights on any toy, train, doorstop or holiday buyer’s calendar. This year’s edition is bigger and better than ever before, with lastminute consignments arriving just in the nick of time to make the catalog publishing deadline. “We were ready to wrap up the catalog to send to the printers, but then shipments of toys came through the door that were so exceptional, we knew we had to take the extra time to get them into this sale,” said Michael Bertoia, president of Bertoia Auctions. An all-star lineup awaits bidders taking part in the two-day event, starting with the world-class Bob Merck Halloween collection. There were 198 bidder numbers handed out. Material came from consignors in Camp Hill, Newville, Womelsdorf, Willow Street, Manheim, and also out of state from New Springfield, Ohio. Below are some highlights and prices realized, which include a 10-percent buyer’s premium. The news of the day were the Zook dioramas. With the addition of a few other Halloween collections, the popular specialty category will be brimming with rare witches, black cats and veggie people. “We received a call from a gentleman who consigned Halloween items to us last year. There will be antique and vintage turkey and pilgrim figurines; turkey platters; china and glassware in autumn colors of red,

is something that authors have written about for hundreds of years. What is troubling is that the class is about very fundamental skills like cutting food with a knife. Having seen a few of her friends at our house for dinner, I can attest this class is important. We have more Fred Flintstone than Miss Manners. Somewhere we have lost the path. One can argue that with most of us having two working parents that the formality of the table has been lost. And yet, when my wife worked at Williamsburg, she met many a young lady who had or wanted a flatware set as the ideal wedding gift. So, I do not think formal dining is totally dead! Another thought is that the abundance of pre-cooked meals in plastic containers has meant that we no longer have time or interest in either cooking or dining. I would have agreed with that until Covid. With restrictions on shopping and dining, Covid has brought more people back to cooking from scratch. While dining with others is not quite possible, perhaps this is a sign of things to come. I do hope that someone went to my colleague’s yard sale and got a nice, inexpensive flatware set and is now busy using it, even if just for his or her immediate family.

About a week ago, I got into a coffee machine chat with a colleague a few years older than I. She was talking about how, when she moved the last time, she put out her sterling at a yard sale and got rid of it. Of course, I cursed my bad luck at not being there for the yard sale, but at the same time I inquired why she had sold all her silver so unceremoniously. Her answer was that they did not entertain formally any longer, and, besides, it took a lot of extra work to polish the silver. She came from a southern family where silver was an expectation of marriage and dining. As an older adult, living far from the South, she no longer saw the need to hold onto that convention. I think her approach is typical of many people, young and old, who no longer are interested in sterling flatware and serving pieces. It is true that we have entered the selfserve world of dining, but I wonder if we have lost something along the way. At my daughter’s university in Pennsylvania, they are offering a class to graduating seniors on manners, including how to eat properly. Now before everyone screams that this is evidence of the decay of humanity, I have to point out that manner books have been around for centuries. Learning to set a table, keep your elbows off of it while dining, and not drink the finger bowl

All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and are inclusive of an 18-percent buyer’s premium. The event, officially titled a Music Machines, Coin-Op & Advertising Auction, was led by the outstanding lifetime collections of Ken Vinen and Jack Winkler and also featured general store items, petroliana (gas station collectibles), breweriana and automobilia.
A total of 624 lots came up for bid, many of them with roots in Canada, in an auction that grossed more than $389,000. Nicky Wyeth’s standard gauge train display features historic “tinplate” Lionel trains from the 1920s and ’30s traveling around colorful buildings and scenery, including a large bridge modeled after New York’s Hell Gate Bridge. The 8-by-12-foot display was also recently enhanced with modern reproductions of a 1940s monorail. Artist Jamie Wyeth’s N-gauge train display was originally coowned by Wyeth and his friend and fellow toy collector, artist Andy Warhol. Visitors can enjoy “Holiday Magic at Brandywine” with the opening of the Brandywine Railroad, a holiday favorite since 1972. On view through Jan. 10, 2021, this year’s seasonal offerings will also include the return of artist and composer Ann Wyeth McCoy’s dollhouse, which features six rooms filled with three-dozen dolls and hundreds of miniature objects that will delight visitors of all ages. This exhibit opened Oct. 31. While slightly modified this year to provide a safe and socially distant experience, the Brandywine Railroad display will still have plenty of model trains, miniature details and the engaging elements that everyone loves, including interactive components operated by hands-free foot pedals. The iconic O-gauge display will feature trains running on a thousand feet of track through a small village, a drive-in movie

Thousands of these unique treasures will be available for purchase during the Annual Holiday Critter Sale from Dec. 2 to 6. Safety precautions, including face mask requirements and capacity limits, will be in place for all in-person

tional Spring Rich Penn Auction event has always been in late April or early May. Not this year. In March, things needed to change. In an interest to be safe, Penn postponed the May date until June, and then postponed again, starting July 23. The auction was a four-day sale, with over 2,500 lots including many thousands of items such as coins, barbershop, country store, soda fountain, toys, petroliana, Victoriana and decorative items. Overall, this auction was in the planning stages for over a year and was expected to be a very big one. “In spite of the complications, the auction was very successful, and we achieved all our goals,” stated Penn. “We were concerned that we wouldn’t have an inhouse crowd. But they showed up, a bit over 100. And they wanted to buy.” Bidders entered through a queue where temperatures were taken, and masks, gloves, and sanitizer were provided along with an information sheet on safety guidelines and proper social distancing. “Bidders were understanding and very cooperative,” said Penn.

Penn has been doing live online auctions since they began and said online activity set all kinds of records. He commented, “In four days we had over 13,000 bidder registrations from across the globe. Over twice what’s normal. We’ve never seen numbers like that. Hardly a lot sold that didn’t have a thousand watchers. Buyers were hungry and also aggressive. Over 50 percent sold online.” The first session included
