Cordier Auctions Sells Rare American Revolution Document, Fine Jewelry, And Porsche 911 Carrera Harrisburg Auction House Holds Fine And Decorative Arts Sales Quarterly Cordier Auctions, located in Harrisburg, Pa., reports a strong year for 2021. The company, established in 2006, holds auctions throughout the year with a focus on fine and decorative arts, as well as coins, sterling, stamps and jewelry, firearms and militaria, estate/consignment, and real estate. In 2020, they transitioned to online-only auctions. “It was clear that online auctions were the direction the industry was headed and, for us, the pandemic created the motivation for us to move more quickly,” noted David Cordier. Cordier’s quarterly Fine and Decorative Arts highlights in 2021 included a Severin Roesen (1815-72) still life, 42-by-52-inch oil-on-canvas painting that was unsigned but with a strong attribution from William H. Gerdts. It sold for $25,200. A pair of 14-carat 4.05 CTW diamond ear studs brought $19,200, a Yamaha C3 conservatory grand piano brought $10,200, and a set of eight Warren Platner for Knoll chairs fetched $10,200, going to a buyer in Zurich, Switzerland. A Chinese bronze seated Buddha
went to a buyer in Fuzhou, China, for $9,000. A rare American printed document, a Manifesto & Proclamation, October 1778, commanded $22,800. The Manifesto & Proclamation was presented by the Earl of Carlisle Sir Henry Clinton and William Eden offering the British colonists a repeal of parliamentary taxation and internal selfgovernment as a last effort to quell the American Revolution. Printed by Tory (and reported Colonial spy) James Rivington, the Peace Commission appealed to the states, who in turn rejected the plea by burning down Rivington’s New York print shop. Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: Homage To Some Old Friends
By Peter Seibert The other week I heard some news that shook me to the bone. The Country Cupboard, that wonderful restaurant and shopping complex on Route 15 above
Lewisburg, was closing for good. For decades, the Country Cupboard has been our lunchtime destination when we went antiquing. About once a month, if not more frequently, we would leave home and head north. We were usually headed to Roller Mills Antique Mall or a speed run to the shops in Bloomsburg or perhaps going to an auction. Lunch was always at the Country Cupboard, where we consumed vast amounts of their mac and cheese (truly a separate food group from all others), the kids would get their wooden nickel for candy and our Christmas tree would get another ornament. As recently as December, we were there. It was just as
we knew it. And now it is closing. This was not the first time that I have lost an old friend to a closing. We used to make a similar run south of the Pennsylvania border. We had a route of antique malls in Emmitsburg, Hagerstown and Frederick. And where was lunch? The Cozy in Thurmont, where our kids grew up on their fried clams and baked goods. It was where we based all our antiquing forays from, and I will never forget our oldest deciding he wanted to go there for his birthday since he so enjoyed the food. I write this column not strictly as an homage to those restaurants but to talk about change. We love our antiques, and that means we love the
past. It is part of what we do. And that sense of the past also sometimes means we hate change and are creatures of historical habit. We will continue to go to the antique malls in Lewisburg and Frederick, but we will miss our favorite restaurants. I am sure we will find a new restaurant, but something has changed for us. Years ago, one of my first bosses in the museum world taught me the lesson of scoping out small, family-owned restaurants when I was needing lunch while out on business. He had an encyclopedic memory of those places, and I have tried over the years to assemble such a list. Like the Country Cupboard and the Cozy, families ran those
family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique “Born to collect” should be treasures found in shops, the motto of Peter Seibert’s co-ops and at auctions. places. They specialized in home cooking and were usually packed with locals at lunchtime. I am betting that most readers of the column have such places in mind, the kind of restaurants that remind you of your childhood with ham balls, roasted chicken, mac and cheese and other Pennsylvania food favorites. Hopefully your favorite is still open and that the next time you go out antiquing you can go there and revel in an extra piece of strawberry rhubarb pie. And if your restaurant has closed like my old friends, then pause a moment for the loss.
1914 Cracker Jack Collection Smashes Several Records In Heritage Auctions’ Winter Sports Card Sale Wilt Chamberlain’s 1969 Topps Card Shoots To $276,000 vintage and modern offerings, among them one of the highest-graded complete Cracker Jack sets on PSA’s registry. Here, too, was collector Stephen Parthum’s No. 1 Card assemblage, so called because he bought the very first and very last card from each set in which he was interested, sports, initially, then from old TV shows and movies given their own card releases. And his collection brought one of the weekend’s biggest delights. The 1969 Topps Wilt Chamberlain No. 1 is a fantastic card for myriad reasons, chief among them it marked Topps’ return to basketball

cards after a 12-year break; Parthum’s card, a PSA Mint 9, is one of the four highest-graded examples in the world. It entered the auction with a $40,000 estimate. By the time it entered extended bidding it was already a record-setter, and when it finally closed, Chamberlain scored a breathtaking $276,000. Six years ago, a Chamberlain ’69 with the same grade sold for $9,560. Chamberlain’s rookie card, a 1961 Fleer graded PSA Mint 9, also smashed its estimate in this auction, as the stunning example sold for $348,000, proof again that Goliath’s best cards, like the man himself, possess an extraordinary vertical jump at the moment. In the summer of 2021, a Wilt rookie in the same grade sold at Heritage for $288,000. Another rookie hit one out of the park last weekend: Mickey Mantle, whose 1951 Bowman debut graded PSA NM-MT 8 sold for $504,000. Not far behind was a 1933
Goudey Napoleon Lajoie graded PSA Mint 9, which realized $384,000. In all, 14 cards sold for six figures, including two of the finest cards from the 1914 Cracker Jack collection. The Christy Mathewson, graded PSA EX 5, is one of only two to achieve such a high
number, and PSA has seen but one higher. The New York Giants hurler saw his card cross the plate for a recordsetting $312,000. And the 1914 Cracker Jack card featuring “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, graded PSA EX 5, sold for $240,000, another new record for the set. The PSA EX 5 Walter
Johnson from the same set sold for $84,000. That’s a big number for the Big Train and another new Cracker Jack record, which does not surprise Heritage Sports’ cofounder and president Chris Ivy. “Not only are these cards Continued on page 4

William Du Pont’s Rocky Hill Collection Of Americana
CALENDARS
Phenomenal Grouping Of Early Southeastern Pennsylvania Furniture Among Highlights By Karl Pass Sotheby’s held a landmark sale of the William du Pont collection, which he called the Rocky Hill Collection Jan. 22 and 23 in its New York City salesroom. The auction grossed $6.9 million, more than 1.5 times over the $3.9 million high estimate, and 99 percent sold by lot. Bill du Pont was born in
Wilmington, Del., in 1938. His childhood home was down the road from the Winterthur Museum and Library (former home to his cousin, Henry F. du Pont). Bill du Pont served on the board of trustees of Winterthur for over four decades. He tragically passed away in a tractor accident on July 4, 2021. Overused words such as important and rare aren’t
hyperbole when it relates to this grouping of material. Bill du Pont set out to assemble and research early arts of southeastern Pennsylvania, mainly both 18th century Pennsylvania German and Quaker decorative arts. In the line-and-berry category, a term used to describe the type and style of inlay work, one of the stars was the Montgomery family Queen Anne line-and-berry inlaid cherrywood slant-front deskand-bookcase from the Nottingham area of Chester County, Pa., ca. 1745. The double dome-top desk-and-bookcase was du Pont’s favorite piece of line-and-berry furniture. The initials “W” and “M” within the arched panels identify the original owner, likely William Montgomery (1665/6-1742), a

The Heinrich Miller Chippendale sulfur-inlaid sycamore blanket chest, Dauphin County, Pa., dated 1781, realized $50,400. A rare chest due to the inlay and use of quarter sawn sycamore, it brought $46,000 in 1995 at the Mr. and Mrs. Richard Flanders Smith sale held in Lebanon, Pa., by Christie’s. Smith acquired it from Joe Kindig Jr. in 1969.
This walnut dutch cupboard is the only extant example of its form with sulfur-inlaid decoration. The initials of the original owners, “AD B” and “AN B,” are flanked by tulips and vines and set within three plaques with a central rose motif and the date 1770. The pie shelf was replaced. The Lebanon County cupboard sold for $10,000 in 1972 at Pennypacker’s Jack Lamb estate sale. Du Pont bought it from dealer Kelly Kinzle, who bought it back for $37,800.

Scots-Irish Presbyterian who emigrated to America in 1722 and settled in northern Delaware. The initial “A” was added later and may correspond to his son, Alexander Montgomery (d. 1747), who inherited the piece. The deskand-bookcase brought $151,200. Wendy Cooper and Lisa Minardi discuss the piece in “Paint, Pattern and People: Furniture of Southeastern Pennsylvania, 1725-1850” (Winterthur, Del., The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, 2011). The desk-andbookcase is the only complete example of its form with line and berry inlay that survives. It is unusual for being made of

Scholar Lisa Minardi discussed this cupboard in “Sulfur Inlay in Pennsylvania German Furniture: New Discoveries” published in “American Furniture,” edited by Luke Beckerdite (Hanover and London: University Press of New England, 2015). Dealer Kelly Kinzle sold it to du Pont and bought it back at the sale. It realized $37,800. A powerhouse of a wardrobe was the Ley family walnut shrank, which was also sulfur-inlaid. What exactly is sulfur? Basically, it is a chemical element with a low melting point. The naturally occurring element of sulfur was a by∆product of blast furnaces and when liquidified sulfur was an alternative to wood inlay. Often used on walnut by Pennsylvania German crafts-

Asheford Institute Releases Top-Selling Antiques And Vintage Data For 2021 Annual Survey Examines Trends Now in its 13th year, the Asheford Institute’s annual survey of top decorative arts buying trends from the calendar year of 2021 has made its way onto both digital and paper newsstands across the country. The survey and poll of past students and graduates has become a staple to many in the antique industry for its unique ability to look into the current state of today’s decorative arts marketplace as it relates to overall sales
trends for dealers within the collecting communities. Lead researcher for the school, Anthony Harper, says the key to getting print-worthy survey results that people can actually use to help plan their own buying strategies for the upcoming year is based on receiving actual sales data, alongside item-specific requests from buyers, which can then be used to indicate interest within a particular collecting genre.
This Abner Zook diorama of an ice skating scene sold for $8,800.
As with virtually everything this past year, Harper says the ongoing pandemic continued to have an effect on not only large scale supplychain issues for new and freshly minted items, but also for older collectibles with a few more miles on them. “Last year categories like costume and period jewelry boomed,” said Harper. “But this year, it was all about finding inventory.” Harper believes that some categories in the poll rose or fell not necessarily because of
a lack of popularity, but because of a lack of stable inventory. “When everyone is online doing stay-at-home on their computers it’s going to have a net effect on available stock out there for dealers.” However, not all things moved to the rhythm of the pandemic, at least according to Amber Shole, who’s been compiling statistics for the survey for over 10 years. “Midcentury modern remained strong,” said Shole, despite Continued on page 10

past survey indications that it may have peaked. “I think sometimes really strong trends can have mini-dips and valleys along the way, and this is simply an example of that.” Shole said that other perennial poll favorites like Art Deco and toys continued to fare well last year. For other areas of the survey there were some legitimate surprises, as once again an unexpected category literally rocketed to the top of the charts with seemingly little notice. What causes these apparent sudden swings in interest? Well, according to Shole, it’s more than just about the age of the item, but also the age of the buyer that will often set the trend in motion. “Three years ago, there was a buying frenzy of baby boomers looking to collect anything related to the Apollo Moon mission’s 50th anniversary,” said Shole. “But a year later interest peaked, and sales were relatively flat.” End of story, right? Not
according to Shole, who says that last year’s roll out of a Chinese space station, SpaceX rocket launches, and the deployment of a groundbreaking celestial telescope have reinvigorated the space genre with an entirely new group of younger collectors. “It just goes to show that sometimes a popular collecting category can literally come from nowhere and take the collecting world by storm,” says Shole. “It’s kind of exciting to see.” For readers seeking the complete 2021 listing of all the best-selling antique and vintage genres and categories contained within the school’s yearly poll and survey, the full results (including this year’s winner) can be found at the institute’s website at https://www.asheford.com/2021-surveyresults.html.
