Market For Folk Artist Maud Lewis’s Work Shows No Indication Of Cooling

Records were broken in two days of auctions held Feb. 10 (Canadiana) and Feb. 11 (Canadian Folk Art) by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. Heading the list of top performers was the renowned Nova Scotia artist Maud Lewis (190170), whose paintings “Black and White Cat” and “Gulls at Harbour” achieved for $50,150 and $36,580, respectively. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium.

“We had a great Canadiana sale on February 10th with strong objects in a wide variety of categories,” said Peter Baker,

including a Brownscombe jug, attracted a lot of attention. Some exceptional hooked rugs were offered, with a Grenfell Mission ‚ ‘Shadows’ being the top performer, bringing $4,750, and many other opportunities for some good buys. Other Canadian art included Inuit sculpture and some early stonecut prints that sold above estimates,” added Baker.

The runner-up top lot on day one was a spectacular 18th-century Quebec armoire, going for $27,140. It had a high doublepaneled frieze and bold cabriole

for the sale. “Collectors and dealers were able to acquire some unique and rare items, but there are always surprises, both high and low, which kept the buyers on their toes. The two paintings by Maud Lewis reflected high interest in her works.”

It was pictured in “The Early Furniture of French Canada” (Jean Palardy). The doors and sides had panels in a transitional Louis XIV/ XV style.

A masterful Nova Scotia foot stool in the Lunenburg Germanic tradition with original red/green

paint and exuberant geometric carving blew past its $1,000-$1,500 estimate to finish at $24,780. The skirt was deeply shaped with a carved star flanked by two wings, while the top had notched corners and a large carved diamond with a rosette positioned at the center.

A stoneware picture frame made by John Marx (Brantford, Ontario, ca. 1860s-90s), an intricate and beautiful piece that was signed on the reverse and boasted a lovely lattice design and dark glaze, bested its estimate of $1,800-$2,500 by more than 200 percent to achieve $21,240. The aforementioned Grenfell Missions “Shadows” rug measured 33.5-by45.5 inches.

“Rounding out the February 10th sale was a large collection of carved and inlaid boxes with several 18th-century examples selling well, along with rarities such as a Baldwin Hill & Company fur trade dag knife bringing $8,260,” Baker pointed out. The ca. 1856-60 knife, 14 inches in length, had a double-edged steel blade and the original wooden handle affixed with brass rivets.

The Feb. 11 Canadian Folk Art Auction was no less impressive, with Maud Lewis’s “Gulls at Harbour” leading the way, followed by a coastal village with lighthouse painting by another acclaimed Nova Scotia artist, Joe Norris (1924-96).

Smith’s Pharmacy (Victor, Colo.) 32-ounce teal drug store bottle sold for $6,250; an early 1900s 14-carat Klondike, Alaska, gold headed walking stick also realized $6,250; and a pair of mint state $25 U.S. Gold Eaglecoins (1994 and 2008) fetched $4,700 at a four-day Marvels of the West Auction held Jan. 25 to 28 by Holabird Western Americana Collections LLC.

Holabird’s original plan was to have two auctions in January, a timed onlineonly sale in the middle of the month and a live auction

(with online bidding) at the end of the month. That idea was scrapped, however, and both sales were combined into one catalog, the timed online sale on Jan. 25 and 26 and the live auction on Jan. 27 and 28, online and live at its gallery in Reno, Nev.

The two auctions were aptly named, Marvels of the West, considering their contents. Both contained categories collectors have come to expect from Holabird: Western and Native Americana, Gold Rush, mining, coins and currency, railroadiana, tokens,

The 10.5-inch-tall, quartsize John E. Smith’s drug store bottle was a desirable teal example from the Ron Reed collection. “Reed specialized in giant 32-ounce Colorado drugstore bottles, and every Colorado collector knew he had this beauty, one of the prizes of his collection and a true prize for any American colored drugstore bottle collector,” remarked Fred Holabird.

When Reed, a longtime friend, passed away last year, his family asked Holabird to

sell his collection of Colorado embossed bottles. Reed had purchased a number of key pieces out of the previous Gary Bracken sales, and a few “ringers” in the timed sale were snuck in, to entice new collectors into collecting Colorado bottles. A few other bottles that also did well were a Cyrus Eaton & Co. (Denver) early medium to dark amber quart whiskey bottle (“You Bet”), with an applied top, ca. 1880-85, 12 inches tall, in fine

shape ($2,500).

The early 1900s 14-carat Klondike, Alaska, gold headed walking stick was very fancy, and came with a leather case and a book about the family who owned it. There were two buttons of gold quartz, each one measuring one inch by one inch.

The two mint state U.S. $25 Gold Eagle coins were the day four top lot. They were in spectacular condition, each weighing a half-ounce of fine gold. Another final session performer was a rare George Rasmussen’s (Central City, Colo.) pocket mirror, unlisted in Dunn in any form and in nice condition (“Good for 12 c. in trade”), with a graphic of a young woman ($1,000). A chest packed with personal effects belonging to

1st. Lt. Charles Allen Rankin, an engineering officer in WWI who served with the legendary flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker, sold for $3,625. The chest contained, among other things, a copy of Rickenbacker’s 1918 book, “Fighting the Flying Circus,” signed by Rickenbacker, plus photos of him, other aces and Rankin.

What Does “Collector Quality Condition” Actually Mean?

I have often argued that there are certain words and phrases that are used in the antiques and collectibles trade that ought to be stricken from the lexicon. There are also other terms like rare, mint, investment grade, and vintage that are often used incorrectly, sometimes by mistake, but other times to deceive. That said, terms such as rare, mint, investment grade, and vintage do have their necessary place in the trade and are vital when used properly. I have written about these terms in previous articles. Today, I want to discuss a condition qualifying phrase that I see quite often when scrolling through online auction sites like eBay. The phrase is “collector quality condition.”

At first glance seeing the term may seem harmless, but I assure you it is not. I have never heard a savvy collector

or dealer use the term “collector quality condition” to describe an item that they were either buying, selling, or otherwise collecting. This is quite simply due to the fact that the term makes absolutely no sense to anyone who is a true collector, and I can prove it quite simply with several key examples.

Let’s suppose you are a high-end collector of vintage comic books and are lucky enough to have a budget in the millions of dollars. You want to go after a major Golden Age key book like Action Comics #1 (first appearance of Superman) or Detective Comics #27 (first appearance of Batman). Both of these books arguably meet the definition of being rare. However, being able to locate either of these books in unrestored top tier condition is next to impossible because only a handful of what can be considered high grade copies exist, and most of these copies are sitting locked away in high-end collections. As such, even the most skilled collector with an unlimited budget would be happy to own either of these books in any grade possible, especially given the fact that there are completed auction sales showing that a copy of Action Comics #1 in CGC 0.5 (poor condition) sold for close to $500,000 in the past year! Make no mistake, there are also a few copies of Action Comics #1 that have

been graded by CGC in 9.0 and higher condition, but any copy of Action Comics #1 can easily be considered to be collector quality condition. And this brings me to my point. Using the description qualifier of collector condition quality and applying it to this item is completely meaningless.

Now I already know what my critics are going to say-most collectors are not buying a copy of Action Comics #1, so this is a bad example. Okay, let’s use an affordable key vintage comic book to prove this point. Amazing Spider-Man #300 (first appearance of Venom) is a key issue book that is readily available due to the fact it was printed in 1988 and hoarded. Just by looking at the population reports that comic book grading company CGC regularly updates, there have been tens of thousands of copies of this book graded and readily available on the open market. Extremely high-grade copies of this book do sell for thousands of dollars, but let’s assume that in this case the collector in question wants a low or mid-grade copy for his collection. Is this book not in collector quality condition simply because it is considered to be a lower grade copy?

This book is still in demand from a collector just like the higher grade copy that may or may not meet the definition of investment grade. As a result, the term collector

quality condition is worthless and tells the would-be buyer nothing about the item in question. What’s worse, I have seen eBay listings that show an item like this being listed without any third-party grading and the description states the item is in collector quality condition, along with the disclaimer that the the buyer should check out the pictures provided to assess the overall condition of the item. After reading this description that went viral on certain online collecting forums for all the wrong reasons, I can confirm my head is sore from banging it against the wall because I thought that was more productive than attempting to engage with the would-be seller. Even if one was to list the item in question with an accurate assessment of the item’s condition, the term “collector quality condition” still adds nothing to the description of the item.

Still not convinced that the phrase “collector quality condition” is meaningless? Log on to any coin collecting forum or any vintage “Star Wars” collecting forum and you’ll see what I mean. Personally, as a collector who also invests in a lot of these items, I tend to go after highgrade third-party graded examples of the items I collect. That said, I fully recognize that the collectibles trade is made up of a diverse demographic. I am confident that if one lists a 1908 $5 gold coin graded by PCGS in MS64 (mint state) condition and another in AU50 (almost uncirculated), both will find a buyer. Calling either item “collector quality condition” does nothing to help the buyer, as both will be bought by collectors. The same is as true for a highgrade highly sought after vintage “Star Wars” action figure as it is for a low condition specimen of the same figure.

You can apply this same concept to any antique or collectible in the trade.

In conclusion, I do know that a lot of collectible resellers read this column. Please remove the term “collector quality condition” from your listings. Do you ever see a high-end auction company promote something as “collector quality condition”? I can cite no recent example of the term ever being used by Heritage Auctions, Sotheby’s or Christie’s, among others. The term should be struck from everyone’s lexicon and never used. Federation Of Historical Bottle Collectors To Hold Convention In Texas Annual Event Will Take Place Aug.

Antique bottle and glass enthusiasts will want to mark their calendars from Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 1 to 4. That’s when the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors (FOHBC) will hold its 2024 National Antique Bottle and Glass Exposition in Houston, Texas. The event will be held at the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) and the historic Hotel ZaZa in the Houston Museum District.

2022 Convention, the FOHBC took the year off in 2023 to plan for a different experience in 2024,” said Ferdinand Meyer V, past three-time president of the FOHBC and one of the driving forces for this year’s event. “If you like history, great antique bottles and glass, museums, and nature, Houston is the place.”

Two vintage spy cameras piqued the imaginations of bidders. One was a Matchbox Model 2 spy camera, made by Eastman Kodak Co. (Rochester, N.Y.), used by resistance personnel during WWII for target recording and propaganda photography ($1,375). The other was a Minox Model IIIS spy camera manufactured in Germany ca. 1956 in a rare anodized finish,

The cranberry cut to clear decanter and matching stopper was blown at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Works, Sandwich, Mass. The decanter is a one-of-a-kind presentation piece similar to examples found at the Sandwich Glass Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This eagle Masonic Arch historical flask, blown at the Keene Marlboro Street Glassworks, Keene, N.H., ca. 1815-30, is extremely rare in this color.

This pattern molded flask, bright lime green, ten diamonds, Midwestern, was probably blown at the White Glass Works, Zanesville, Ohio, ca. 1830. It is among the finest examples in both color and strength of mold impression.

This North Bend Tippecanoe figural cabin, Mount Vernon Glass Works, Vernon, N.Y., ca. 1840, is believed to be the only known undamaged example and blown for the 1840 William Henry Harrison campaign.

“Magic: The Gathering” Arabian Nights Sealed Booster Box Leads Trading Card Games Auction Game’s First Expansion

A “Magic: The Gathering” Arabian Nights sealed booster box (Wizards of the Coast, 1993) sold for $212,500 to lead Heritage’s Feb. 16 and 17 Trading Card Games Signature Auction to $1,341,464.

“This is an extremely important booster box, and this auction was the first time we ever offered it at Heritage,” says Jesus Garcia,

Some of the cards have two versions, a light version and a dark version, with different

shades of the mana symbols because of printing errors.”

A “Pokemon” First Edition Base Set sealed booster box (Wizards of the Coast, 1999) prompted 58 bids before closing at $200,000. Like the Arabian Nights booster box, this set also is a product of an exceedingly low print run. It contains 102 cards, including the coveted Charizard

that is sought after by collectors.

“Alexey Brodovitch: Astonish Me”

Exciting New Exhibit Will Be Presented At The Barnes Foundation

This spring, the Barnes Foundation will present “Alexey Brodovitch: Astonish Me,” a major exhibition exploring the influence and significance of photographer, designer, and instructor Alexey Brodovitch (1898‚ 1971).

Brodovitch is best known for his art direction of the U.S. fashion magazine “Harper’s Bazaar” from 1934 to 1958 and his role in making photography the cornerstone of its visual identity. On view in the Roberts Gallery from Sunday,

March 3, through Sunday, May 19, and curated by Katy Wan, managing curator, D. Daskalopoulos collection gift, at Tate Modern, London, this exhibition will focus on the legacy of this overlooked figure, consider his collaborations with many of the major figures of 20th-century photography, and encourage new perspectives on art direction and graphic design.

As art director at “Harper’s Bazaar,” Alexey Brodovitch transformed the magazine and design fields through his creative layouts, often incorporating surrealist inventions and European avant-garde innovations, and celebrated collaborations with photographers including Richard Avedon

and Lillian Bassman.

Upon first arriving in the United States in 1930, he taught at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (now University of the Arts) in Philadelphia and, later, the New School for Social Research in New York City. Brodovitch’s unique pedagogy influenced an extraordinary number of celebrated documentary and fashion photographers, including Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Eve Arnold, and Hans Namuth. He also collaborated with luminaries such as Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Featuring more than 100 works from public and private collections around the world, “Alexey Brodovitch:

Astonish Me” is arranged thematically and showcases photographs, prints, works on paper, books, and magazines, including works by artists Brodovitch mentored and collaborated with.

“Ice Station Zebra” Classic Cold War Movie Memorabilia

The late, eccentric billionaire Howard Robard Hughes Jr. (1905-76) was a big fan of one film, “Ice Station Zebra” (1968), which he reportedly had viewed hundreds of times. Hughes was not alone in his admiration for the movie, as “Ice Station Zebra” continues to capture the attention and admiration of both cinema fans and movie memorabilia collectors today.

“Ice Station Zebra” is loosely based on the 1963 bestselling book of the same

name by Scottish novelist Alistair MacLean. Producing the picture for MGM were James C. Pratt, Martin Ransohoff and John Calley. Writing the screenplay were Douglas Heyes, Harry Julian Fink and W.R. Burnett, with John Sturges directing and Michael Legrand delivering the rousing music score.

Heading the cast were Rock Hudson as Commander James Ferraday, Ernest Borgnine as Boris Vaslov and Patrick McGoohan as David Jones. The supporting cast included Jim Brown, Tony Bill,

Lloyd Nolan, Alf Kjellin, Gerald S. O’Loughlin, Ted Hartley, Murray Rose, Ron Masak, Sherwood Price, Lee Stanley and Joseph Bernard.

Budgeted at $8 million (a figure which eventually ballooned to $10 million), “Ice Station Zebra” began filming in June 1967. Two duel diesel-electric powered submarines were used as doubles for the fictional nuclear-powered submarine U.S.S. Tigerfish. The U.S.S. Ronquil was used for surface shots while the U.S.S. Blackfin was employed for surfacing and submerging scenes, shot near Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Principal photography was completed in 19 weeks.

“Ice Station Zebra” begins when a satellite re-enters the atmosphere and ejects a capsule via parachute near Station Nord, Greenland, in the frozen Arctic Ocean ice pack. Using a homing beacon, a man approaches the capsule while another interested party secretly observes the unfolding situation nearby.

While in dock in Scotland, Commander James Ferraday is ordered to sail his nuclear attack submarine U.S.S. Tigerfish to Drift Ice Station Zebra, ostensibly to rescue the stranded members of a British scientific weather station. Eventually coming on board is an enigmatic British intelligence agent named “Mr. Jones” and a United States Marine platoon commanded by the no-nonsense Captain Leslie Anders. Also joining the group is Boris Vaslov, a Russian defector and spy whose loyalties are questionable.

The mission proves perilous, as the Tigerfish moves beneath the frozen Arctic but is unable to break through

the thick ice upon reaching its destination. Commander Ferraday then orders a torpedo launch in order to bore an opening, but that proves nearly fatal when the torpedo tube floods, sending the Tigerfish spiraling dangerously down to crush depth. Ferraday manages to save his submarine, only to discover later that the tube had been sabotaged.

The Tigerfish eventually breaks through a thin layer

of Arctic ice, with Ferraday, Jones, Vaslov and the marines arriving at the weather station in a raging blizzard. Here they find a nearly burnedout structure with the survivors suffering from hypothermia. Secret agent Jones then reveals his true mission: the retrieval of a specially-made British camera with film enhanced by the Americans. The technology was stolen by the Soviets and sent into orbit via satellite in order to

photograph American nuclear missile silos. However, in the process, the camera also snapped surveillance photos of Russian nuclear missile silos as well. Due to a malfunction, the Soviet satellite crashed to earth near Ice Station Zebra, with the Russians, Americans and British now in hot pursuit of the downed craft and its precious cargo.

“Ice Station Zebra” made its world premiere at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 23, 1968. The next day, the film went into general release around the country, where it failed to click at the box office. Contemporary reviews of the picture were a mixed bag, with the Hollywood trade paper “Variety” giving it a thumbs up and Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times panning it as “a dull, stupid movie.” In later years, “Ice Station Zebra,” which garnered two Oscar nominations (Best Cinematography and Best Effects, and also Special Visual Effects), evolved into a semi-cult film of sorts. As previously noted, reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes became the movie’s number one fan. While secretly living at his Las Vegas Desert Inn penthouse in the mid-to-late 1960s (before the era of VCRs), Hughes would repeatedly call the all-night local TV station, KLAS Channel 8 in Las Vegas, which he had purchased in 1967 for $3.6 million, to demand endless showings of “Ice Station

The film’s one sheet Cinerama style A poster (27-by-41 inches), winningly executed by artist Robert McCall, is a real beauty. Featuring the blurb “’Ice Station Zebra’...Remember The Name‚ “Your Life May Depend On It!,” one example in fine/very fine condition sold at auction for $139. Another one sheet variation poster (27by-41 inches), this one drawn by artist Howard Terpning and featuring the film’s four stars,

Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan and Jim Brown, is of interest to specialized collectors of the film. One example in folded very fine condition brought $65.

Always tops on any collector’s list is the movie’s eightcard lobby set, which pictures color scenes from “Ice Station Zebra.” So named as these cards were prominently displayed in movie theater lobbies to promote the film, one complete set in fine condition brought $45 at auction. The picture’s insert poster (14-by36 inches) is also an interesting entry. Once again, Howard Terpning was the artist, with one example in folded very

fine- condition selling for $81 at auction.

Foreign movie posters are of great interest to collectors as well. The British quad poster (29-by-39 inches) is intriguing, featuring an American submarine and a Soviet warplane on a collision course to the Arctic. One example in very fine- condition realized a top bid of $109 at auction. The Australian Daybill poster (13-by-30 inches), with the blurb “A new break through in adventure and suspense!,” is a real charmer. One example in very fine+ condition sold at auction for $58.

explore the illustrations. “Storytime in the Gallery” will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursdays, March 14, April 11, and May 16.
