Auction Company CEO And Antique Advertising Expert Rich Penn Joins Morphy Auctions
Newly Created Position Will Be Market Development Officer
Dan Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions, recently announced Iowa auction company CEO and antique advertising specialist Rich Penn has joined Morphy’s in the newly-created role of Market Development Officer. From his base in Waterloo, Iowa, Penn will work in tandem with Morphy’s marketing team, which is led by Chief Operating Officer and Director of Marketing Les Jones, and advise on the latest technological innovations as they apply to the auction process. Additionally, he will liaise with consignors whose collections incorporate a broad range of categories, including antique advertising, toys and country store antiques; classic cars and petroliana; sports memorabilia; and other collectibles categories.
“I believe every aspect of an auction house’s operation should be customer-driven. Dan and I operate very similarly in that regard. His sales and ours cover a lot of the same ground, and importantly, our business principles are very similar,” said Rich Penn. “Both of our companies are known for their integrity and attentive customer service throughout the auction process. We do things in a first-class manner or not at all. In my new role, I especially look forward to working with clients and making sure their collections are given the marketing attention they deserve and that we deliver maximum auction results for them.”
“I have known Rich Penn and his wife, Sharon, for almost 20
years. I have always admired, respected and, in many ways, learned from their savvy approach to marketing and advertising. Their dealings with customers, both at the buying and selling end, have always been conducted at the highest level. I am proud to say that their methods influenced the way I built my own business. I would also add that when it comes to meeting with potential consignors and crafting proposals, you won’t find a better team than Rich and Sharon Penn. Their gracious, businesslike approach, combined with their knowledge of art and antiques, creates a comfort level
that clients really appreciate,” said Dan Morphy.
Rich Penn earned his BA in both Marketing and Business Management from the University of Northern Iowa and his MSJ (master’s degree in Journalism) from Northwestern University. Following grad school, he joined the workforce and relocated to the Midwest’s commercial advertising hub, Chicago, where he accepted a position as account manager for major national brands at the advertising firm J Walter Thompson. In three years, he became the youngest VP at Thompson’s Chicago office. Rich subsequently
returned to Iowa, where he spent 10 years teaching marketing and advertising at the University of Northern Iowa. In 1982, he married his wife, Sharon, and also established his own boutique advertising agency. One of his first clients was Victorian Casino, a Las Vegas auction house specializing in antique gambling and coin-op machines and antique advertising, collecting fields that had long interested Penn. (Victorian Casino was acquired by Morphy Auctions in 2014.)
In 1999, Penn and his wife, Sharon, opened Rich Penn Auctions, a collector-focused business that gained a large and loyal following and earned national acclaim along the way. In recognition of Penn’s marketing skills, the National Auctioneers Association, Iowa Auctioneers Association, and NEI Marketing and Advertising Club have honored Rich with a total of more than 50 awards. The award categories included newspaper and magazine advertising, catalogs, video, social media, website and publicity.
Penn describes the auction business as one that is “built on relationships.” One of those relationships has been his long friendship with Dan Morphy, whose multinational operation has had a strong involvement in the antique advertising hobby since its earliest days.
“Dan and I got into the auction business around the same time. I had written a couple of books

Three colorfully vibrant paintings by the legendary Nova Scotia folk artist Maud Lewis (1901-70) sold for a combined $79,060, and a 19th-century French Bontems caged singing bird automaton played a sweet tune for $10,030 in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd’s online Advertising, Canadiana and Historic Objects Auction held April 13. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium.
Turning 50 only happens once, and for Carlisle Events, that 50th anniversary celebration kicked off in high fashion with Spring Carlisle 2024, held April 17 to 21 at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. This year’s event was driven by Hemmings and welcomed nearly 100,000 guests from around the world. They came to Carlisle to buy cars within the car corral, to shop for parts and more within the automotive flea market, to meet up with friends, and to celebrate a milestone. In all, the collective energies within the Carlisle fence line helped solidify exactly why this event and others have been around for so long.
Gates opened bright and early on day one, with the crowds steadily picking up into the afternoon. Day two had a better turnout as shopping sped towards Friday and the weekend. In addition to a nice influx of guests on the second day, the start of the two-day collector car auction began powered by Carlisle Auctions (more on that below).
Along with the mix of vendors, small and large, within the automotive flea market, Spring Carlisle also hosted a robust Manufacturers Midway. The midway welcomed some of the top names

Ensuring Accurate Appraisals For Your Collections
By Jestin Davis
I recently read a startling statistic in a UBS study regarding collectors stating “39 percent of collectors can’t estimate the value of their collection.” I can say from years of experience working with collectors, specifically helping them insure their collections, third-party help is important. In the world of antiques and collectibles, accurate appraisals, for whatever purpose, are crucial. Whether you’re looking to sell, insure, or simply understand the value of your cherished possessions, a precise appraisal can make all the difference. However, the process of obtaining an accurate appraisal can be complex and nuanced, requiring a blend of expertise, research, cost, and attention to detail. So, how can collectors ensure they’re getting the most accurate appraisal for their collections? Let’s delve into some key strategies.
Engage Certified Appraisers: When seeking an appraisal for your collection, it’s essential to work with certified and reputable appraisers. Look for professionals who are accredited by recognized appraisal associations. These organizations uphold strict standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, and expertise in various fields of appraisal.
Specialization Matters: Collections can vary widely, ranging from fine art and jewelry to vintage cars and historical artifacts. Seek out appraisers who specialize in the specific type of items you possess. Specialization ensures that the
appraiser understands the nuances, provenance, and market trends relevant to your collection, leading to a more accurate assessment of value.
Provide Detailed Documentation: Before meeting with an appraiser, gather as much documentation as possible about your collection. This may include purchase receipts, provenance records, previous appraisals, certificates of authenticity, and any relevant historical information. The more comprehensive your documentation, the better equipped the appraiser will be to evaluate your items accurately.
Be Transparent: Honest communication is key to an accurate appraisal. Provide the appraiser with all

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Private Sales Matter Very Little
By Shawn Surmick
On April 29, news broke that a vintage Magic: The Gathering (MTG) game card sold for $3 million dollars via private sale, making it the most valuable MTG game card ever sold. Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game that was first released in 1993 by a then small up-and-coming company known as Wizards of the Coast. The game was not expected to gain mass market appeal and the earliest releases of the card game were very limited in availability.
The card that sold for $3 million dollars was an Alpha edition Black Lotus game card,
which was graded by CGC card grading in pristine 10 condition. The Alpha edition of MTG cards were the very first cards that appeared at retail locations back in 1993 and were quickly replaced by the next printing known as the Beta edition. It is believed that there are less than 50 examples of certain Alpha edition cards in existence, making certain cards extremely hard to find, especially in pristine condition. What makes this particular card so sought after is that it is considered the holy grail of vintage MTG collectibles. The Black Lotus is considered one of the most powerful Magic: The Gathering cards in existence and is part of the coveted reserved list, a list of cards that the company has vowed to never print again in their original form.
Today, MTG is a pop culture phenomenon and, along with Pokemon, it is one of the most successful collectible card games ever created. It is also one of the first. Again, MTG premiered in 1993, while the Pokemon collectible card game first premiered in the United States in 1998. Magic did, however, have a rocky start, and it took several years for the game to
build a cult-like following that eventually would spill over to the mainstream. Toy conglomerate Hasbro now completely owns Wizards of the Coast, and the MTG brand and has been key to their overall sales the past few years. While action figures and traditional toys have been languishing in toy isles due to a lack of sales, sales of collectible card games have seen astronomical growth within the past decade. In fact, Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon alone have been dominating retail sales for some time now, so it should not come as a surprise that the market for vintage cards that are no longer being produced is ripe with nostalgia and mass speculation.
The record-breaking sale of this incredibly scarce game card is good for the collectors of early “Magic the Gathering” cards and collectibles, but it means very little overall. Private sales make up the vast majority of sales in the entire antiques and collectibles trade. This is in opposition to public sales that take place at auction where sales information is readily available to the buying public. I have long been critical of private record-breaking sales being made public, as there
must be a reason the information is being made public, rather than staying private. Ask who would benefit if that information is made public? The simple answer is that it would benefit the market as a whole. I once had a mentor in the collectibles trade who always told me to ignore private sales being made public because he believed that market manipulation was the end result. I tend to agree with this logic.
Up until this point in time, no other Magic: The Gathering game card has ever come close to selling for $3 million dollars. To put this sale in perspective, consider this. The recent record-breaking auction sale of “Action Comics #1” graded by CGC in 8.5 was for $6 million dollars, and this comic book was published in 1938. Therefore, it took roughly 86 years for someone to be willing to pay $6 million for this comic book. There are roughly 80 known copies of this book in existence, and an 8.5 condition copy was at the higher end of all the copies in existence. That said, this particular Black Lotus that just sold for $3 million dollars was in perfect pristine 10 condition, but was printed in 1993. This

and bested the $25,000 high estimate by bringing $30,680.
The other two paintings signed by Lewis were a mixed media-on-artist board titled “Covered Bridge in Winter,” which featured blue loops
“Alberta” by A.Y. Jackson (Canadian, 1882-1974), depicting a small village with a church and low hills in the background, supplied by Jackson to John Kinnear, as suggested by Jackson’s 1967 letter to Kinnear (also offered in this sale), artist
The group of six 1966 and 1967 handwritten letters from Maud Lewis to John Kinnear, a London, Ontario, artist and friend who worked as an agent for Lewis, sold for $9,440.
dating it to the second half of 1965 ($25,960), and a mixed media-on-masonite titled “Two Deer in Winter,” a serial image found only in the 1960s, that realized $22,420.
Also sold was a group of six handwritten letters from Maud Lewis to John Kinnear, all from 1966-67 ($9,440). Kinnear was a London, Ontario, artist and friend who worked as an agent for Lewis in the late 1960s. Lewis stated in one of the letters that she had finished decorating some dustpans supplied by Mr. Kinnear. It was signed, “Maud Lewis.” In a related lot, a framed working pencil sketch-on-paper titled
signed lower left but undated, rose to $4,425.
The ca. 1885 French Bontems caged singing bird automaton was housed in a bronze cage and stood 18.5 inches tall, with applied scenic Sevres plaques surrounding the base panels. Included was a crank-style winding key. It was mechanically functioning and made $10,030.
The auction overall was packed with 414 lots of general store items, art glass, Canadiana, advertising signs, Western collectibles, pottery and stoneware, art, and lamps and lighting. Headlining the event was the Greg Hisey collection.
Hisey’s “Ghost Town Blues” in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, was a bed and breakfast where travelers immersed themselves in the past. Working with themes of early Western transportation, veterinary and general store, Hisey collected advertising and furnishings right out of a ghost town. Items sold included late 19th-century automata, rare Canadian political posters and folk art, decorative art glass, silver, bronzes, and early lighting. East met West in this very diverse sale.
“This was an eclectic auction, and performance varied by category,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Petroliana and soda advertising performed well, while niche markets such as veterinary medicine advertising were variable. We found that uncirculated, fresh to the market material performed the best. Collectors are energized by things they haven’t seen before, and their memories are sharp and long. The goat wagons and historic objects relating to early transportation languished, while key advertising soared past our expectations.”
A total of 464 online bidders placed a combined total of 7,402 bids, for a gross of $478,785. Internet bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers. com and the Miller & Miller Auctions website. Of the 414 total lots up for bid, 99 percent of them were sold and 48 percent of the top 50 lots exceeded estimate.
A Canadian Gilson, Guelph Dixie “Ace” Tractors sign from the 1910s, an embossed lithographed single-sided tin sign, sold for $7,670. Gilson Manufacturing was a Wisconsin company that opened a plant in Guelph, Ontario, in 1907. The Dixie Ace tractor was made in Guelph in 1919-20. A wooden veterinary remedies store display cabinet from the 1900s for Dr. Lesure’s Famous Remedies (Keene, N.H.), the tin lithograph panel depicting a horse in profuse detail peering out of an oval stone opening, one of the “holy grails” in veterinary patent medicine collecting that came with the original advertising booklet, achieved $4,130, and a ca. 1906 self-framed single-sided tin lithograph sign for the Hickman-Ebert Wagon Company (Owensboro, Ky.), was a highlight. This self-framed tin sign, titled “In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree,” the stunning lithographic image from the golden age of advertising, marked, “Chas. W. Shonk Co. Litho, Chicago,” commanded $5,900. For additional information, email info@millerandmillerauctions.com or visit www.millerandmiller auctions.com.

I’ve stated many times on my “What’s It Worth” radio show that I believe we’re in the “golden age of nonprofit donations.” What I mean by this is that as the baby boomer generation moves, downsizes, and passes on, the value of many of their antiques, collectibles and household items have declined in value. They no longer want them, and their children don’t want them. With shifting markets, declining prices, and changing tastes, auctioneers are picky for consignments. Many antique and collectible dealers are buying less, because they are selling less. For many, a viable option is to donate no longer wanted items to a nonprofit group who will re-sell to benefit a specific cause, but in many cases, the investment of having an appraisal should be conducted to avoid a “treasure” from being identified as “trash.”
Whether by the original purchaser or the family who has inherited unwanted estate items, all too often
A UCTIONEER
treasures are being donated as trash today. For example, a $800 Rookwood art pottery vase was donated as a chotchkee. A $1,500 18-carat gold bracelet was donated as costume jewelry; a $2,500 sterling silver flatware set was donated as silverplate; a $4,500 original modern artwork was donated as a reproduction print; and a $20,000 diamond wedding ring was
donated as a cubic zirconia. What’s it worth? This “treasure donated as trash” list is obviously just a fraction of donation mistakes made daily throughout the country, and nonprofits love it. To prevent this from happening to you, consider having a professional appraiser perform a house or estate contents appraisal. Pick one who has no interest in buying from you.

“Dan first approached me about doing something together around 17 years ago. My eyes and ears were open, but I didn’t want to sell my company. Recently, he tried again. He had a plan that would make everyone happy, and the timing made sense,” concluded Penn.
As part of the newlyforged agreement, Rich Penn Auctions will continue to conduct online-only timed auctions, but not their traditional cataloged auctions. Their last such auction will be held live at Penn’s Iowa venue on May 17 to 19. “Tentatively, we will shift our business gears this summer, following that final live gallery auction.”
The new union will be further cemented Dec. 6 to 8 in Las Vegas when Morphy’s
its series of sales featuring Rich and Sharon Penn’s acclaimed personal collection. “Morphy’s has been in our trust planning from the beginning. We knew no one else could handle the auction of our collection like Dan. But it’s happening now, and best of all, we get to see it happen,” ended Penn.
“Rich and Sharon Penn have spent many years putting together a collection that is unquestionably one of the finest of its type. It includes stellar coin-op, vending and penny arcade machines, plus exquisite antique advertising that represents many popular subcategories. Every item in their collection was handpicked with an emphasis on high condition, rarity and eye appeal. I’m excited to have the privilege of bringing this unique collection to the market and am even more excited about our future prospects with Rich Penn involved in his new key role at Morphy’s,” summed up Morphy.

means it took only 31 years for this card to sell for $3 million dollars. To be fair to my critics, I fully understand that I can be accused of comparing apples to oranges here, because I am. However, consider this: Does anyone really think if this $3 million dollar Black Lotus game card was offered in a high-end auction it would have sold for $3 million dollars? The “Action Comics #1” that sold for $6 million dollars was offered at public auction and sold via Heritage Auctions. Based on this information alone one can make the case that this private sale means absolutely nothing and should be ignored. That should not mean that this particular game card isn’t worth a tidy sum, as I would put the value of this particular card close to $1 million to $1.5 million dollars at auction, but $3 million seems a little excessive. Perhaps that’s why the buyer wanted the sale to be made public instead of keeping it private? He simply overpaid for the privilege of owning it. And the seller and CGC card grading stand to benefit as the sale brings both free publicity. Collector
In conclusion, if we check the prices paid for a lot of high-profile collectibles being sold via private sales and compare them to similar items that have sold via public auction, you will notice a trend. In most cases, the items being sold via private sales usually sell for quite a bit more when compared to similar items that are sold at auction. As a result, my advice here is simple: take this sale price with a grain of salt as it means very little in the grand scheme of things and how a card like this should be valued going forward. Feel free to disagree with my analysis here, but do so at your own risk, as I would not be paying $3 million dollars for this particular card any time soon. There are much better collectibles one could buy, in my opinion, with that same amount, just from an investment standpoint. Thanks for reading.

relevant information about your collection, including any known flaws, repairs, or alterations. Concealing information can lead to inaccurate assessments and potential legal repercussions down the line.
Understand the Purpose of the Appraisal: The value of your collection can vary depending on its intended use. Whether you’re seeking an appraisal for insurance purposes, estate planning, or sale, be clear about your objectives with the appraiser. Different appraisal methodologies may be used based on the intended purpose, ensuring that the valuation aligns
with your specific needs.
Stay Informed: Educate yourself about the market trends and demand for items similar to those in your collection. Attend auctions, read trade papers, visit galleries, and consult reputable online resources to stay abreast of developments in the antiques and collectibles market. A well-informed collector is better equipped to evaluate appraisals critically and make informed decisions about their collection.
Get Multiple Opinions: Don’t hesitate to seek appraisals from multiple experts, especially for high-value or unique items. Comparing appraisals from different professionals can help identify discrepancies and ensure that you’re
getting a fair and accurate assessment of your collection’s value.
Regularly Update Appraisals: The value of antiques and collectibles can fluctuate over time due to changes in market demand, trends, and historical significance. It’s advisable to update your appraisals periodically, especially for valuable or appreciating assets, to ensure that your insurance coverage and estate planning remain current.
Obtaining an accurate appraisal for your collection requires careful consideration, research, and collaboration with certified professionals. By following these guidelines and investing the necessary time and
