Marvel Mystery Comics #9, Ranked #33 On Overstreet’s Top 100 Golden Age Comics List, Graded CGC 4.0, Sells For $40,000 Amazing Spider-Man #1 (March 1963), Graded CGC 1.8, Brings $10,938 A copy of Timely Comics Marvel Mystery Comics #9 from July 1940 sold for $40,000, and three other vintage comic books topped the $10,000 mark at a Spring Comic, Toy and Sports Auction held May 21 by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, online and live in the Cranston, R.I., gallery. The copy of Timely Comics Marvel Mystery Comics #9 was the auction’s expected top lot, as it was #33 on Overstreet’s Top 100 Golden Age Comics list. The book featured the second Sub-Mariner cover, with an iconic Human Torch vs. SubMariner battle, plus great artwork by Bill Everett and Alex Schomburg. It had a mid-level grade of CGC 4.0. A copy of Marvel Comics Fantastic Four #1 (Nov. 1961), graded CGC 2.0, featuring the origin and first appearance of the Fantastic Four and Mole Man, finished at $18,750. “While it may not have been the most expensive comic in the auction,” the Fantastic Four #1 was a great result and new record for the grade,” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. auctioneer and the firm’s director of Pop Culture. “I’m sure its value will only continue to rise over time. Overall, it was a great sale with strong results throughout. Comics, as always, proved to be the strongest category of the day,” added Landry. A copy of Marvel Comics Amazing SpiderMan #1 (March 1963), graded CGC 1.8, with the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson and Chameleon, the first Fantastic Four crossover, plus a retelling of the origin of Spider-Man, brought $10,938. Also, a copy of Marvel Comics X-Men #1 (September 1963), featuring the origin and first appearance of the X-Men and Magneto, graded CGC 5.0, with a slight restoration, changed hands for $10,625. The “Madame” puppet was made popular by Wayland Flowers (American, 1939-88) in his comedy act and on the hit 1980s TV show “Madame’s Place.” It featured a handpainted composite head with articulated mouth and an elaborate bedazzled gown with rhinestone earrings and necklace. It was recently featured on an episode of PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow” and was accompanied by a VHS of Mr. Flowers using the puppet. It sold for $7,812. “Unfortunately, I was out of the gallery the day of the auction,” said Kevin Bruneau, the president of Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers and an auctioneer. “I was with Joel Bohy (Bruneau & Co.’s director of the recently created department of arms and militaria), working a local appraisal event to benefit senior citizens. However, looking over the auction results, I know it was a great day for the Pop Culture department and the gallery as a whole. I look forward to the next one.” The sale contained 430 lots, consigned from across the country. Internet bidding was facilitated by the platforms LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com and Continued on page 3

Rare Ca. 1884 Winchester Cartridge Board Fires Off $70,800 Petroliana And Advertising Sale Delivers A rare, ca. 1884 Winchester cartridge board, one of the most sought after, iconic examples of American sporting advertising, hit the mark for $70,800 in an onlineonly Petroliana and Advertising Auction held April 23 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. The cartridge board was the top earner in a 482-lot auction that grossed $538,581. All prices in this report are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium. The Winchester cartridge board was a lithographed hardboard with an applied
representation of one of Winchester’s earliest lines of ammunition. Few survived intact due to their size and the fact that they were displayed in store windows and areas exposed to light. The one sold was housed in the original frame and was in untouched, original condition. The rest of the auction featured offerings that appealed to every level of petroliana and advertising enthusiast. Quality advertising signs, tins and related memorabilia from the 1890s to the 1970s were sold. The

petroliana, soda and general store advertising signs included many high-grade, seldomseen examples. These all did well. “The prices for gas and oil advertising surged at the outset of the pandemic and appear to be holding,” said Ethan Miller, of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Signs, gas pumps and even quart cans were bringing strong numbers throughout the sale.” “Die cut porcelain signs are the hottest. The heartshaped porcelain Carhartt Overalls corner sign sold for over triple the high estimate of $8,000. We are having difficulty predicting where certain signs will sell these days.” He was referring to the ca. 1905 Carhartt’s Overalls corner sign, recently discovered during the liquidation of a longtime business in New Hamburg (Ontario, Canada), Murray’s Clothing and Footwear. The single-sided porcelain sign, graded 9 for condition, featured a mint green car and was known to have been produced for the Canadian market. It finished at $25,960. The sale had a 100 percent sell-through and attracted nearly 500 registered online bidders, who combined to place a total of 9,930 bids via the Miller & Miller website (www.MillerandMillerAuctions

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert
HISTORIC VIKING VILLAGE
By Peter Seibert For my wife’s birthday, she opted to have me take her to a live auction at an auction house in northern Lancaster County. We both enjoy live auctions, although virtually 100 percent of our bidding in the last five years has been online. Having lived in Wyoming, where auctions are not common, meant that our bids were done via computer with a two-hour time difference to the East Coast. But, off we went to the catalog sale, looking to see what we could find. She collects quilts, and there were a number in the sale. She is a stickler for condition and therefore wanted to look at them. I was
surprised to see the house full of people, even with Covid waning. While there was online and absentee bidding, I saw perhaps only 10 percent of the sale going to someone not in the room. Now this auction house does not charge a buyer’s premium, so that is probably a factor for reducing the online buyers. The prices, to my mind, were strong and in areas that I had thought were pretty soft, such as glass, ceramics (not universally), textiles and folk art. A lot of what was sold was the meat and potatoes of the antiques world, middle grade items that can be resold to collectors, fellow dealers or decorators at a good profit if bought well. I note this because there are still people who complain about dealers driving up the prices at auctions. This has been a beef that I have heard for decades and is fundamentally untrue. A dealer who is buying for resale can only afford to pay what he can get for it along with his markup. The audience that drives prices up at sales, in my opinion, are the family and

bidLIVE.Bruneauandco.com, plus the mobile app “Bruneau & Co.” on iTunes or GooglePlay. All prices quoted in this report include the buyer’s premium. A copy of volume 1 #1 of Playboy magazine (December 1953), featuring the iconic color photo of Marilyn Monroe as the “Sweetheart of the Month,” graded CGC 6.5, went for $6,250. A 1978 Canadian Kenner

neighbors who bid with their hearts and not always with their heads. Anyhow, the sale was strong, and I saw people buying across various lines, which told me that they were probably either pickers or general line dealers looking for prints and glass and redware. With that in mind, it struck me as a real harbinger of where the market was going. Strong wholesale auction prices would inevitably mean equally high retail prices. It also meant that there was money in the room from sales that had already occurred. Did we get anything? Absolutely. Kim got some textiles for her collection, and I got a blanket chest to store them in for her! I did not pay retail for any of these items, but I will say that they were not given away. They tested my willpower and probably will keep me out of the market for a while. I chatted with several collector/dealers in attendance, and all commented to me that they were reasonably optimistic about the market. Sure, it was not the heady days of the ’90s when everything brought crazy prices, but it seemed like things were tracking upwards. Finally, a shoutout to the gents who worked the clerking desk and recognized me from this column. I appreciated the kind words as it was nice to be back home going to a Saturday sale in Lancaster County.

In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Oil Paintings By Canadian Folk Artist Maud Lewis Soar To New Heights Canadiana And Decorative Arts Auction Grossed Nearly $1 Million A pair of oil-on-board paintings by the Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (1901-70) blasted through their pre-sale
estimates to finish at a combined $501,500, and a group of letters written by Lewis to a fellow artist and confidante hit $82,600 in an online Canadiana and Decorative Arts Auction held May 14 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd., in Ontario, Canada. All prices quoted in this report are in Canadian dollars. Easily the top lot of the 407-lot auction was Lewis’s The signed John Tansel (Kentucky, “Black Truck,” 1800-72) powder horn, carved with a painted in 1967, an federal eagle with shielded breast, oil-on-masonite arrows in one clawed foot, a leafy vine board measuring in the other, realized $22,420. 11-by-14 inches.
The springtime painting, showing a black truck, daffodils, blossoming cherry trees and a house, had an estimate of $30,000-$35,000. “In a time of great turmoil and change, the art world lived vicariously through Maud Lewis and her art, setting three new world records with the three lots offered, including the highest, ‘Black Truck,’ at $413,000,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller. “It raises the stage for her works to unimaginable heights.” The other Lewis rendering was one titled “Oxen Pulling Logs,” also from 1967. This was an interesting work by the artist, as it was somewhat simpler in the amount of subject
matter. It featured a snowy scene of a driver with oxen hauling logs, with prominent evergreen trees in the background. The vibrant 12-by-16inch work changed hands for $88,500. Wedged between the two paintings was lot 336, a group of three letters from Ms. Lewis to John H. Kinnear, dated 196667. Few letters by Lewis exist, and these offered a rare glimpse into her fascinating world. Kinnear, himself an artist, corresponded with Maud Lewis from the time she became famous, in the mid-1960s, up until her death in 1970. Kinnear would send the Continued on page 5

entertainment industry, sports, calendars, advertisement, autographs, photography, maps, transportation, militaria, firearms and weaponry, general Americana (geographically sorted) and miscellaneous collectibles. A star lot was a group of 32 photographs taken by E. A. Hegg (1867-1947), a Swedish-born photographer who worked the AlaskaKlondike Gold Rush from 1897-1901 and in the process became one of the most famous photographers of the period. From his studio in Skagway, Alaska, he ventured all over the AlaskaKlondike regions, specializing in Dawson, Skagway, Bennett and scenic views associated with the railroad. The group sold for $2,000. A group of 12 framed mining-themed trade cards and postcards including a rare, original Levi Strauss
trade card from around 1885 and another one featuring an image of Molly Brown, fine examples of Gold Rush advertising, brought $1,438. Also, a gold nugget pin made by HDK Alaska, 2.5 inches long with a mammoth bone inset, realized $1,000. The back had a simple clasp that could be easily opened, but it also had a loop for the attachment of a safety chain. Day three categories included mining, fossils, minerals, tokens and numismatics, which featured bullion, ingots, coins, currency, dies, ephemera, foreign and medals, plus exonumia (numismatics, but other than coins and paper money; a few examples are tokens, medals and scrip). One of the highlights was a U.S. Mint San Francisco 23.06-ounce silver ingot, 999.75 fine, sizable at 2.25-by-3.5 inches, with original Mint patina strong throughout ($8,125). The San Francisco small oval punch was at top center, as usual.
