Rare Marklin Car Full Steam Ahead At Cordier Toy And Train Auction Pabst Blue Ribbon Freight Car Sells For $10,800 Thirsty collectors were anxious to bid in Cordier Auctions’ Toy and Train Auction held online July 17, featuring new and vintage trains, dolls, tin litho, and toy soldiers. The Harrisburg, Pa., auction house reported strong prices in multiple categories. The top lot was a rare 1907 Marklin Pabst Blue Ribbon gauge one freight car, which sold for $10,800. “I knew that it would do well,” said Melanie Hartman, director of specialty auctions and avowed toy lover, “but I did not think the condition was good enough to take it that high.” Bidders were undeterred by the minor losses to paint. Pre-bids were strong throughout the week leading up to the auction, with the final price surprising the appraiser. Other featured lots included five Kenner Blythe dolls. Found in a storage unit, the dolls were all in their original boxes, with three having intact cellophane. Extremely rare in this condition, the dolls’ prices ranged from $3,480 This G.I. Joe Combat Series Japanese Imperial Soldier toy sold for $1,140. Continued on page 4

He says he ultimately chose Heritage Sports Vice Presidents and Card Experts Derek Grady and Lee Iskowitz because “every question I asked them, I liked the answer, and if I didn’t like the answer, at least I got the truth.” Initially, Giordano didn’t want to get the card graded: He was concerned about putting its fate in the hands of “someone who knows less about this card than I do,” he says. Heritage Auctions is proud to announce that this 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps rookie card is the centerpiece of the Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27 and 28, Summer Platinum Night Sports Auction. And it’s just as Mr. Mint advertised when he sold the card in 1991: Sportscard Guaranty Corporation has graded it a Mint+ 9.5. “This card is arguably the finest-condition example of the most iconic post-war card in the world,” according to Chris Ivy, Heritage’s director of Sports Auctions. “That grade, plus the find in hobby history, puts this fact it has documented prove- card in a category of its own. nance from the most storied The card more than lives up to Rosen’s claim when viewed in person.” Ivy says he expects the Mantle to sell for more than $10 million, as this is a finer example than the PSA Mint 9 for which actor-entrepreneur Rob Gough paid a then-record-setLong Rifles of the American Revolution: ting $5.2 million last year. “Mantle rookie card sold for record 50G.” That was the headline in the “New York Post” on July 2, 1991, when Alan Rosen, identified only as a “card maven,” announced that he had sold a 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps card to an anonymous buyer for $50,000. Rosen, known in the sports-card hobby as Mr. Mint, had wanted $57,500 for the card, which the paper reported “looked as if it had just come from the pack.” But the buyer bargained him down to $50,000, which was $500 more than the previous world record for a 1952 Mantle, one of the most coveted cards in the world. When he sold the card 31 years ago, Rosen provided the buyer with a letter that said the 1952 Mantle card was “in my estimation the finest known

Mass-produced scarcity in the antiques and collectibles trade is nothing new, but the naive speculators who fall prey to this kind of marketing are unfortunately almost always new to the trade. Massproduced scarcity is the result of multibillion dollar corporations doing what they do best, making a substantial profit, sometimes at the expense of their own fan base. We have seen this play out multiple times over the past several decades in the collectibles trade. Baseball cards, comic books, POGS, and Beanie Babies were all prime examples of this concept in action. Even

NorthGate Antique Mall

at present time, this concept is still playing out in multiple collecting categories: toys, video games, modern era sports cards, and even collectible card games are all benefiting from the concept of mass-produced scarcity. Manufacturers have learned to limit mass-produced products in order to create hype and demand, which in turn increases these products’ perceived value on the secondary market in the short term. This then causes starryeyed speculators to pay a premium to get them thinking they are truly scarce. Ask any expert in the antiques and collectibles trade, and they will tell you to avoid these types of products if you are buying for investment over the long term. Unfortunately, a lot of collectors refuse to believe this and continue to hoard items with production runs in the millions and in some cases the tens of millions. It is no secret that “Pokemon” is a very hot commodity right now. “Pokemon” came to the United States from Japan in the late 1990s during a

massive advertising blitz from parent companies Nintendo and Game Freak, who together formed what is now known as the Pokemon Company. Most enthusiasts first encountered the franchise, via the original Nintendo Game Boy system with the release of the very first “Pokemon” video games, aptly called “Pokemon Red” and “Pokemon Blue.” After exposing video gamers to the incredible world of the franchise the company decided to commission the release of a collectible card game based on the series. The collectible “Pokemon” trading card game hit the United States in late 1998 and immediately sold out. Ironically, the collectible card game was outsourced to be produced by Wizards of the Coast as at this particular time the Pokemon Company did not want to be bothered with the mass production of collectible trading cards. Wizards of the Coast (now a part of Hasbro Inc.) at the time was already well versed in the newly created collectible trading card market due to the success of their

“Magic: The Gathering” card game that premiered in 1993. It was believed that Wizards of the Coast would be able to handle the demand and distribution of the collectible “Pokemon” card game. Unfortunately, demand was overwhelming, and Wizards of the Coast could not produce enough product to meet demand. It is actually believed that this is one reason why today some of these vintage “Pokemon” cards are so sought after. Had Wizards of the Coast actually been able to overproduce these cards back then, the values being paid on the secondary market for some of these treasures would have been reduced as supply would be much more readily available. In 2003, the Pokemon Company started to manufacture “Pokemon” cards themselves, and they cut Wizards of the Coast out of the mix. It was also around this time the “Pokemon” card game suffered a modest lull in demand. Several years later, the “Pokemon” card game would Continued on page 7

Sunken Treasure Artifacts, Time Capsule Of Gold Rush Life Going On Display Items Scheduled For Several Fall Auctions Through Holabird

One of the many historic items recovered from the fabled “Ship of Gold,” the SS Central America that sank in 1857, is the lid to the remnants of the oldest known Wells Fargo treasure shipment box.

Heritage Continued from page 2

spent years as a professional grader, and Iskowitz ultimately convinced Giordano to send the card to SGC, then held their breath while waiting for the verdict. “I wanted to market it the way it was, with the documentation from Mr. Mint,” furthered Giordano. “I told Anthony I would handle the consignment as though it were my own, and I told him there was no logical reason not to get it graded,” said Grady. “Everyone today wants the authenticity and the grade of a third-party expert. But I did tell him if it didn’t come back at least a 9, we would sell it ungraded.” “When Derek finally told me it had graded a Mint+ 9.5,” says Giordano, “I was not surprised.” Nor should he have been. Long before auction houses became go-to sources for collectors, Alan Rosen was “bigger than life, bigger than the hobby,” Beckett wrote upon his death in 2017. “As Mr. Mint, Rosen promoted himself as ‘The world’s largest buyer of baseball cards and sports cards.’” The media treated Rosen that way. He appeared on Good Morning America, and in a lengthy profile in the July 4, 1988, issue of “Sports Illustrated,” writer Dan Geringer referred to Rosen as “the King of Cards, the Duke of Dough, the Sultan of Scratch, the Baron of Big Bucks, the Crowned Head of Lettuce, the Marquis de Wad, Mr. Mint. A figure of near mythic proportions in a world suddenly gone mad over soaring baseball card prices.” “Rosen told everyone that if he owned a card, it was the best. This one, he got right,” according to Grady.

In his book “True Mint,” Rosen wrote about taking his Mantle to the Father’s Day 1991 card convention at Madison Square Garden, and how the card was “gem mint, unimprovable.” He also described in detail how he wound up selling the card to Giordano and one of his sons, which made the Post and was mentioned on Howard Stern’s radio show. The chapter was titled “The $50,000 Mantle.” “I told (Giordano) that you have to pay for the best,” wrote Rosen, explaining why he was asking $57,500 for a card that had never before sold for that amount. When Giordano and his son offered $50,000, Rosen wrote, “I thought he was pulling my leg, but actually that was only my wife, who was sitting next to me and kicking me under the table.” “We shook his hand and made the deal and picked up the card, and it has been in my memorabilia room in the dark ever since,” Giordano says. “No one has touched it.” Not until it was graded and sonically sealed in a slab that notes it’s from the Rosen Find and is the “Finest Known Example” of the World’s Most Famous Baseball Card, that is. “The current world record for a baseball card auction was set by a T206 Honus Wagner in SGC 3, which sold for $6.6 million last year,” said Ivy. “I believe that this card will shatter that record. This is an item of such singular quality and importance that it’s hard to imagine its ceiling. It will generate competition among the most discerning collectors who pursue absolute best-in-class collectibles in any category. It has all the elements needed to set a significant record.” To learn more, visit www.HA.com.

that were in secure storage in three different states are now giving us a glimpse of gold rush-era daily life for passengers and crew in the 1850s,” said Dwight Manley, managing partner of the California Gold Marketing Group of Brea, Calif., which owns the recovered items. The jeans were discovered in a trunk belonging to passenger John Dement, who survived the sinking. They are now insured for $1 million, according to Manley. Some 19th-century photographs were also recovered. One daguerreotype metal plate photograph of an unidentified young woman was nicknamed “Mona Lisa of the Deep” by the scientific mission recovery

team that retrieved the mysterious photo from the sea bed where it was discovered in a scattered pile of the ship’s coal. “The ‘Mona Lisa of the Deep’ half-plate daguerreotype with exceptional depth of field resolution is by far the finest such image of the 1850s era that I’ve seen in my 50 years of working with historic photographs,” said Holabird. “Other items recovered include pistols, brass luggage tags, passengers’ ticket receipts, galley utensils and dishes, wine and spirits decanters that appear to have been a standard amenity in the first-class staterooms, eyeglasses in solid gold frames, and even chewing tobacco in a

pouch apparently from the 1851 London World’s Fair,” furthered Holabird. Another item is the Central America brass name tag attached to a set of keys that belonged to the ship’s purser. “Because these keys are larger than the type usually used for passengers’ rooms, we think these purser’s keys were for the locked room where the gold treasure cargo was kept on the ship,” said Holabird. The estimated values of the artifacts range from a few hundred dollars each to over $1 million. Manley plans to donate some of the items to museums. Many of the other recovered treasures are being displayed Continued on page 6

continue to sell well, but not stellar when compared to today’s numbers. By around 2010 or so, that would change. Fueled by nostalgia and the latest video games released in the ongoing series by Nintendo, enthusiasts would start to covet “Pokemon” once again. At first, demand was easily contained by the Pokemon Company, but little by little, newly introduced fans to the series started getting involved, and within a few years “Pokemon” fever would begin to grow. With the release of the mobile game in 2015 aptly called “Pokemon Go,” “Pokemon” became bigger and bigger. Social media influencers and YouTubers all started to comment on the collectibility of “Pokemon.” Stores started selling out of their stock and distributors were left asking for more products. By 2016, it was clear that “Pokemon” was a force to be reckoned with. This led to the company making some controversial decisions

that would anger speculators while helping casual enthusiasts new to the series who didn’t want to spend a lot of money to play the game. “Roaring Skies” was a popular “Pokemon” card game expansion set that would debut in 2015. Shortly after, the set was discontinued, but demand kept prices soaring on the secondary market. Booster boxes that originally cost about $90 were now selling for around $300, with speculators hoarding inventory and calling it a can’t-lose investment. That’s about when the Pokemon Company decided to do the unthinkable. The company announced a surprise reprinting of the set, and there would be no distinguishing differences between the first printing and the second. This angered a lot of speculators, while others doubled down and committed to buying out as much of the second printing as possible in an effort to keep prices high. Even after the reprinting, demand for the latest “Pokemon” products always

antiquesandauctionnews.net were kept on store shelves. It was also leaked that within the past three years over 25 percent of all “Pokemon” cards in existence were produced in that time frame. At this point, I seriously don’t think the definition of mass-produced scarcity is enough to define this. In my opinion, this is mass produced stupidity, but please don’t tell the starry-eyed speculators that. They think they know more than the economists and experts who have been warning against this kind of practice for decades. These are not your father’s “Pokemon” cards. Much like agreeing to kiss a Charizard (spoiler alert: they breathe fire), caution in this market is highly advised. Until next time.

seemed to eclipse available supply. However, a then unknown virus would make matters much worse. By the end of 2019, the first reports of the coronavirus were already upon us. By March 2020, almost the entire industrialized world would be at a standstill. Many collectibles, crypto-currencies, and meme stocks benefited during this time, largely through stimulus money. “Pokemon” cards became a speculator’s dream, and due to the pandemic, even if the Pokemon Company wanted to pump more supply into the system, it would be a struggle. This caused the value of modern era “Pokemon” cards to soar. Stores were selling out and even encountering violence and destruction from crazed fans (and resellers). To combat this problem, the Pokemon Company promised more supply was coming. Fast forward to today, and it was announced that the Pokemon Company would be producing over 9 billion cards in a single year to ensure game cards
