Curated by the noted Irish author Colm Tóibín, the exhibition explores the trajectory of Joyce’s life and career from lyric poet to modernist genius and illuminates the author’s creative Organized by the School for Advanced Research and the Vilcek Foundation, the exhibition “Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery” recently opened on unceded Tewa Indian lands at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, N.M., before traveling nationally. The exhibit will be at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, 2023; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, 2024; and the Saint Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Mo., 2025. Pueblo Indian pottery has long been exhibited and interpreted in the academic and museum worlds through singular, often generic, points of view: as ethnographic remnants of the archaeological past or as fine art examples aligned with milestones in Western art history and culture. But the launch of a unique traveling exhibition featuring over 100 historic and contemporary works in clay offers a visionary understanding of Pueblo pots as vessels of community-based knowledge and personalOriginatingexperience.inthe cradle of the Indigenous Southwest, “Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery” is a rare exhibition curated by the Native American communities it represents. The project gives authority and voice to the Pueblo Pottery Collective, a group of over 60 individual members of 21 tribal communities who selected and wrote about artistically or culturally distinctive pots from two significant Pueblo pottery collections, the Indian Arts Research Center of the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe and the Vilcek Foundation of NewTheYork.exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the creation of SAR’s Indian Arts Research Center’s pottery collection in 1922. As SAR’s first-ever exhibition, it also marks the institution’s 13-year efforts to bridge the cultural needs and knowledge of Native communities with its public education mission.“‘Grounded in Clay’ is part of our public education mission which, in this case, enables the public to experience pottery through the eyes of Native peoples,” says SAR President Michael F.Brown. Indian Arts Research Center Director Elysia Poon adds, “Pottery permeates the lives of Pueblo peoples. For many, it is impossible to divorce the pieces from the people.”

Shifting Traditional Exhibition Models “Grounded in Clay” shifts traditional exhibition curation models, combining individual voices from Native communities where pots have been made and used for millennia into a uniquely Indigenous group narrative. The approach illuminates the complexities of Pueblo history and contemporary life through the curators’ lived experiences, redefining concepts of Native art, history, and beauty from within, confronting academically imposed narratives about Native life, and challenging stereotypes about Native peoples. “The Pueblos are not a monolith,” states Poon. “Within each community, there are both individual and shared experiences. In many cases, the curators picked pots that weren’t even from their own community. It resulted in a much more complex and rich mixture than we imagined.”

Dating from pre-contact to the present day, the featured pots connect and contrast the lives of Puebloans in communities spanning from New Mexico’s 19 Río Grande Pueblos to the West Texas community of Ysleta del Sur to the Hopi tribe of Arizona. Curators of diverse ages, backgrounds, and professions selected and wrote about one or more work. The exhibit’s focus on personal and community meaning emerges as a conversation expressed in prose, poetry, and the visual language of pottery. The curators’ firsthand knowledge of pots and potters, family rituals, traditional materials, and daily use grounds viewers in a powerful sense of people and place. At the same time, a thread of ancestral memory connects individual pots to the pride, pain, and living legacy of Pueblo peoples. For example, museum curator Tony Chavarria writes of a ca. 1900 stone-polished blackware olla from his home pueblo of Kha’p’o Owingeh/Santa Clara whose shape sparks a memory of his grandmother’s favorite vintage

The Hunting Horn by Johannes Leichamschneider, Vienna, Austria, ca. 1715, is brass, and a museum purchase, 1951-456.

Among the many highlights of “Making Music in Early America” is a barrel organ, or hand organ, made by Longman, Clementi & Co. in London, England, ca. 1789-1801. It is a hand-cranked organ that could be played inside the home on demand with no musical talent required. The organ barrels operated much like a music box and included dance music, religious music and military marches. They produced music on demand similar to a juke box or record player, if one had the strength to crank the handle and switch out the barrels to change the tunes. In the September 17, 1767, edition of The Virginia Gazette, an item advertising a similar instrument read: “Just Imported from London, a VERY neat HAND ORGAN, in a mahogany case, with a gilt front, which plays sixteen tunes, on two barrels; it has four stops, and every thing is in the best order. The first cost as 16£ sterling, and the Lady being dead it came in for, any person inclining to purchase it may have it on very reasonable terms. Inquire at the Post

remained there for a number of years, studying with Pachelbel and later becoming a harpsichord teacher himself. Pelham returned to Boston in 1744 to serve as the first organist of Trinity Church. In 1750 Pelham moved to Williamsburg to serve as organist at Bruton Parish Church. While in Williamsburg, Pelham actively participated in the city’s musical life, giving concerts and teaching young ladies to play the spinet and harpsichord. Additionally, he supported himself and his family by serving as clerk to the royal governor, supervisor of the printing of money, and keeper of the Public Gaol. The music book that will be on view includes music that Pelham enjoyed as well as some of his original compositions. It has never been on view before, and although the original book is too fragile to be placed on view, this digital interactive will allow visitors to page through the book and see the music for themselves.“Making Music in Early America” is generously funded by an anonymous donor. In the 18th century, music was everywhere: in the workplace, the military campsites, the quarters of the enslaved, the church, the theater, the ballroom and the home. Music was an essential part of life that helped foster a sense of community, whether people were accompanying the organ in song at church or enjoying an impromptu concert at home.

when you discover who played them and what role music played in society.” One of the earliest hunting horns known in American collections is another featured object in the exhibition. Simple hunting horns were being made in the American colonies as early as 1765, but the majority were imported from Europe like the brass horn made by Johannes Leichamschneider in Vienna, Austria, ca. 1715. As hunting horns were worn by the rider, they were easily battered. As a result, early hunting horns rarely survived, and this is an outstanding example that scholars come to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to study. Although the horn section may have been modified over time and updated, the bell is original. Only one other just like this example survives with a history of use at Mount Vernon. It is recorded that George Washington’s enslaved valet, William Lee, performed the important duties of Huntsman, tending to the horses and hounds, as well as blowing the hunting horn during fox hunts at Mount Vernon and other estates. Although the history of Colonial Williamsburg’s hunting horn is unknown, it illustrates the once-prominent role played by free and enslaved huntsmen in the early South.Revolutionary War military instruments are especially rare, and the brass “Hessian” drum, from the Frebershausen area in the Hesse-Kassel region of what is now Germany, ca. 17701785, is another featured object to be on view in “Making Music in Early America.” It was brought over by one of the many so-called Hessian units hired by the British to fight in the American Revolution and was most likely captured by American forces. Made of brass, this drum still has some secrets to reveal: Colonial Williamsburg’s experts, with the aid of colleagues across the Atlantic, are researching to which regiment it belonged and are using the painted colors around the top and bottom bands to help solve its mystery. Also included in the exhibition will be ways for visitors to be able to hear the sounds of four of the instruments (banjo, harpsichord, organized piano and musical glasses) as well as an opportunity to see a musician play an organized piano (the period term indicating the addition of several organ stops playable from the same keyboard). Additionally, guests will be able to use an interactive touch screen to view an extraordinary music book in the Colonial Williamsburg collection that was owned by Peter Pelham (1721-1805), an Englishborn American organist, harpsichordist, teacher and composer. Born in London, Pelham and his family immigrated to Boston in 1730. While there, Pelham’s father apprenticed him to Charles Theodore Pachelbel, son of composer Johann Pachelbel, who is known for “Canon in D,” which is still popular today. Pelham followed Pachelbel to Charleston in 1736 and nor is it responsible for errors in ads taken by phone. “Making Music in Early America,” a new exhibition to open on Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Mark M. and Rosemary W. Leckie Gallery at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, will envelop visitors in the musical world of the 18th and 19th centuries. As told through more than 60 instruments and their accessories, the social history and material culture of early American music will be revealed. This is the first exhibition to show the full scope of Colonial Williamsburg’s musical instruments collection, including some pieces that were recently acquired. It is scheduled to remain on view through December 2025. Organized in five sections featuring music in the home, in religion, in education, in public performance and in the military, “Making Music in Early America” will include harps, organs, violins and other string instruments, fifes, flutes, a bassoon, a grand harmonicon, drums, horns and much more. While the instruments are fascinating in and of themselves, the musicians who played them and their roles in society take center stage in this presidentchiefCarlisleHurst,tion,”rangetunitybeforebutmorecalcollectingWilliamsburgexhibition.“Colonialhasbeenearlymusi-instrumentsforthan90years,wehaveneverhadtheoppor-toshowthefullofthecollec-saidRonaldL.thefoundation’sH.Humelsinecuratorandviceformuse-ums,preservationandhistoricresources.“Supportedbyexam-plesoforiginalsheet

Peter Seibert If Mom and/or Dad with then this an opportunity rather than as a risk factor for something being broken. These are my thoughts about how we can engage the nextHavegeneration.reasonably priced items that kids can collect, and spend some time with young people on those collectibles. For example, both of my daughters began their collecting passion with an interest in Wades, those fun ceramic figures that are generally not more than a dollar or two. It was a great place to begin collecting and building memory skills about what they had and didn’tAntiquehave. shops are cooler than museums because you can pick the stuff up. So, let’s encourage that mindset. Allow young people to sit down and touch things. When I was actively dealing, I was more worried about the shaky senior breaking something than I ever was about a young person. Yes, we can incur loss, but that is life.Make the shopping easy. This to my mind is central to the experience. Several weeks ago, I was in New England and was walking around downtown Plymouth, Mass., and went into a mall that was in a reconditioned department store. There were things I would have liked, but finding myself in need of a restroom and there being none, we fled for somewhere else. Come on, folks, make it easy on your guests and provide the basic amenities of Speculationlife. in antiques should be allowed to die. This is a hard one because every collector innately wants a good deal, and all of us have purchased items that perhaps we did not want but bought because the price was right and we might just be able to sell it for a lot if we hold onto it. Now ask yourself the hard question: did that ever really happen to you? Maybe if you purchased new toys in the 1950s and held them in an airtight room for decades. However, I am not sure the dealer I met who was hoarding cereal boxes or the collector buying every single “limited edition” collector plate is ever going to have anything more than landfill material. We need to encourage collecting because it is fun, because it can be affordable, and because living with the past in a physical way is part of our human experience. And if we also collect and are able to resell the pieces in 20 years and make a bit, that’s great too. But it is not the reason for collecting and certainly is not the turn-on button for future collecting.Sorry to sound preachy, but we need to openly embrace young people as collectors. At my favorite antiques mall in Mullica Hill, N.J., my youngest daughter loves to hunt through cases for jewelry. The owner makers her feel comfortable, is engaging, and in return my wallet is lighter because my daughter has found those wonderful treasures. That to me is how we keep collecting going. “Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. the kids,

In my last column, I was riding high on my horse about how collectors have misread the future of the antiques world as it relates to new collectors. This week, I want to focus on the positives and where we can go. The antiques trade needs to embrace future collectors at a very young age.

process through rare publications, portraits, correspondence, manuscripts, plans, and proofs, many of which are reunited for the first time in a century. It considers key figures from Joyce’s biography that inform the creation of “Ulysses,” such as Joyce’s father, John Stanislaus Joyce, and his wife, Nora Barnacle, as well as those instrumental in realizing its publication, such as Harriet Shaw Weaver, Margaret Anderson, Ezra Pound and Sylvia Beach. The exhibition also looks at artists and writers who responded to the novel, as well as the censorship that attended its publication in the U.S. “Ulysses” was first published in book form on Feb. 2, 1922. Set on one day, June 16, 1904, the novel follows the young poet Stephen Dedalus and the unlikely hero Leopold Bloom on a journey through Dublin. The landmark work links the epic to the ordinary, connecting characters and motifs from Homer’s ancient Greek poem, the “Odyssey,” with everyday life in Joyce’s hometown. Written in self-imposed exile between 1914 and 1921 in Trieste, Zurich, and Paris, “Ulysses” invokes the atmosphere and the topography of 1904 Dublin in astonishing and meticulous detail. On its publication in Paris a century ago, the novel expanded the limits of language and genre, and not without controversy. Censored and banned in America and England for obscenity, “Ulysses” became the catalyst for new legal standards of artistic freedom.“One Hundred Years of James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’” draws on items from the Morgan’s Sean and Mary Kelly Collection, including inscribed copies of the author’s works, rare publications and broadsides, a manuscript fragment, and Joyce’s typewritten schema of the Homeric structure of “Ulysses.” Major contributions from the James Joyce Collection, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, and additional institutional loans include the first and last pages of the manuscript, proofs on which part of the novel was written, and rarely seen letters between Joyce and Nora Barnacle. Also featured are textual and visual responses by figures such as Virginia Woolf, George Antheil, Henri Matisse, Vladimir Nabokov, and Ralph Ellison. “The 2018 gift to the Morgan of the Sean and Mary Kelly Collection of James Joyce has inspired this project, enabling us to celebrate one of the most daring and controversial literary works in the English language. I can think of no one better to spearhead our efforts than Colm Tóibín, who, among many other accomplishmenbts, is a leading expert on Joyce,” said The Morgan’s director, Colin B. Records allowed no second chances, no apologies, no erasing of the tape. It’s this do-or-die quality that makes for greatness.” And so, record companies touted the “live”liness of their releases. Debonair Noel Coward was “recorded in actual performance at Las Vegas.” Champagne music-meister Lawrence Welk’s souvenir disk was “actually recorded at the Aragon Ballroom.” And when the King himself traveled “From Memphis to Vegas,” his milestone album was billed as “Elvis - In Person - Recorded On-Stage at the International Hotel!” When you heard those packed houses cheering, you knew you were getting a bonafide rendering of the real thing. Usually. Every now and then, however, the “live” experience was diluted. One of the most notorious was the “live” album teamup of Tony Bennett and the Count Basie Orchestra. Their November, 1958 evening was indeed recorded live at Philadelphia’s Latin Casino. The producer, however, was unhappy because the concert hadn’t been captured in stereo. The performers were summoned to the studio to “re-create” the event. Artificial applause was added, sometimes in the wrong places. When this “live” recording was finally released, listeners were not impressed. Said Bennett in later years, “The whole attempt at fabricating an audience was in badBut,taste.”forthe most part, that’s really Judy Garland up there, knockin’ ‘em out of their seats at Carnegie Hall, Jayne Mansfield “welcoming you to her house of love,” Louis Prima and Keely Smith “smashing every attendance record in the Painted Desert Room,” and a pre-stardom Barbra Streisand “working both herself and her audience into a near frenzy.” As if those album jacket blurbs weren’t enough to have you counting the seconds until your record dropped from spindle to turntable, there were the critical raves that accompanied them. Ethel Merman was “the only one who can make your blood run cold and the roots of your hair ache with pain!” while Liza Minnelli was “a prancing, rocking, curvy pressure cooker threatening to Whew.explode!”Allthat, and the record hasn’t even dropped yet. “Is it live or is it memorex?” It’s an “In Person” album, kind of the best of both.Photos by Hank Kuhlmann.Donald-Brian Johnson is the co-author of numerous Schiffer books on design and collectibles, including “Postwar Pop,” a collection of his columns. Please address inquiries to: donaldbrian @msn.com. They loved her everywhere, including Japan. Julie Andrews in concert at the Osaka Festival Hall, 1977. In her 1972 appearance at the Olympia in Paris, Liza Minnelli was heralded as “up to her ears in bubbly stardom.”

From The Supremes to “Lady Sings the Blues” and beyond, Diana Ross was a force to be reckoned with. Her 1974 engagement at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas was another record-setter.

Plenty of comedy, enough for a 1974 two-record album, “An Evening With George Burns” also featured the last recording of Jack Benny.

A two-record K-Tel album starred Bing Crosby, with guest turns by Rosemary Clooney and assorted Crosby family members, and was titled “Bing Crosby Live at the London Palladium,” 1976. The King of “Live—In Person” appearances: Elvis. The first record of this double album features Elvis Presley “In Person at the International Hotel, Las Vegas.” The second has him “Back In Memphis.” The album came complete with two autographed Presley pics.

is part of a broader SAR initiative to build equity between museums and Native communities. As an international research institution supporting scholarship in social sciences and the humanities, SAR has engaged with Native communities through the Indian Arts Research Center collections since 1922. In 2008, the center embarked on a bold, new approach to collections stewardship.“Ascaretakers of these collections, we asked ourselves who we are accountable to,” Poon recalls. The question led SAR to shift how it cares for, displays, and interprets its pottery and other tribal collections, in collaboration with, and guidance from, Native communities.SAR’sefforts and those of other like-minded institutions inspired dialogue with Native and non-Native museum professionals, cultural leaders, and artists. Over three years beginning in 2012, the group developed SAR’s “Guidelines for Collaboration,” a set of principles for building welcoming and successful Native collaborations in collections management, exhibitions, education, and public programs. “SAR is changing the nature of artistic stewardship,” said Brown. “As standards change and ideas change, the guidelines change. They are a work in progress in the best possible way.”SAR’s collaborative approach extends to all aspects of “Grounded in Clay,” including a robust calendar of educational outreach, exhibitions and collections tours, and other public and private programs on the SAR campus, at the exhibition site on Museum Hill, and online. As Pueblo voices resonate in O’gah’poh geh Owingeh/Santa Fe and points beyond, the public will experience pottery as a dynamic, ever-evolving form of American art. “This show challenges the concept of historic pottery as relegated to the past,” continued Poon. “A bulk of the pieces were made in the 20th century, contemporary with the works of Kandinsky or Warhol. As long as they exist within the living memory of Native peoples, their stories are vibrant and alive.” Tonka, Smith Miller, Model Toys, Lead Figures. Call 610-804-6783. For artist Kathleen Wall (Walatowa/Jemez), an aunt’s ca. 1982 Nativity set helps reconcile the religious persecution of the past: “Although Pueblo religion and culture have a long history of concessions and acceptance in order to appease Catholic religion, over the centuries, this has transformed into a beautiful syncretism and celebration of faith for New Mexico Pueblo people.”Finally, journalist Tara Gatewood (Shirr-whip Tui/Isleta, Diné) muses on the transformative power of a ca. 1100-1300 Mogollon jar: “To you reading this right now, the viewer, the visitor, the ancestor: Who were you when you stepped to this pot, who are you now?”Building Equitable “GroundedRelationshipsinClay”

Pueblo Governor Brian Vallo praises the skills of the unidentified maker of an extraordinary ca. 1880 Acoma polychrome storage jar: “The master potter had the skill not only to form a jar this size, but to carefully execute other steps in its creation, including a successful outdoor firing. The designs on both the neck and body are classic Acoma pottery patterns depicting clouds, rain, and corn fields. This jar sings loudly to me through its design and its lived experience at Acoma.”
