Local folk art from redware potter Jim Seagreaves (1913-97) was at the show, as was pottery from local ceramic artist Willi Singleton. 1966, the Seagreaves joined the Reading-Berks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman. Their work is regionally collected today by those interested in Pennsylvania German folk art. Verna was a music teacher in the Alburtis and East Penn School District, from which she retired. She was a watercolorist for roughly 40 years. Not a profilic artist, self-taught Verna mainly worked in the Grandma Moses style of folk painting. Her work was exhibited in 1999 at the Historical Society of Berks County (now the Berks History Center). Dylan and Amy Trabosh had a winter landscape painted by Verna priced at $725. Great antique and vintage Halloween and Christmas items were at the show, including Continued on page 2

By Winston Lennon Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, and the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern Inc. (WK&S) railroad. The antiques show is known as a buyable show with great variety of merchandise. It’s a show with 43 dealers that is a welcoming experience for new buyers, but it also attracts advanced specialized collectors who know they can find high quality offerings. Heavy rain throughout the entire day didn’t help attendance, but around 450 showgoers made there way to the show. The gate averages 500-600 and is popular within the greater Lehigh Valley. One showgoer who supports the show is Carson Kressley, a television personality, designor, and actor. He hosts various shows and events and is also known for his role on the Bravo series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Kressley grew up on a nearby horse farm in Orefield. Last month, Kressley appeared as a contestant on season three of “Celebrity Name That

Most digital purchases are no more than prolonged rentals, with the expectation that at some point in the future that same consumer will have to repurchase the item again on a different device. At the very least, a buyer of a physical product can sell or trade the item at will and use the funds to purchase another physical item of his or her choosing. This is what makes the prospect of a digital-only future so scary. It is my sincere hope that companies will reconsider their stance on discontinuing physical media in all forms. I find it very concerning that in the last
decade we have seen the fall of multiple iconic retail stores and now we are facing the demise of physical media as well. So, in closing, I have a small ask for my readers: The holiday shopping season is upon us. Consider buying your loved ones books, movies, music, and video games in physical form whenever possible. I assure you, much like I miss Toys R Us, you too will miss the day when you could have bought the latest Nintendo game in physical form.

“Is it a screen? Is it a chair? Is it a work of art? Harry Bertoia didn’t worry so much about it. Art has the ability to have an impact on our everyday life, whether it’s something that someone can wear or something that you come across walking through a city plaza or the chair that comforts you at the end of the day. All of those things Bertoia felt had a significant impact on our everyday lives,” wrote Jed Morse, chief curator at the Nasher Sculpture Center. Just last year, the renowned Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, opened the major retrospective “Harry Bertoia: Sculpting Mid-Century Modern Life.” The exhibition showcased the artist’s astonishing range and playful interdisciplinary practice; Bertoia was never one to be boxed in, and he didn’t think art should be, either. The highlights of the show were Bertoia’s innovative and charming screens, his enigmatic bush forms (sometimes referred to as dandelions), and, of course, his pioneering
sound sculptures. On full display throughout the museum were Bertoia’s openness and intellectual curiosity, as well as his enthusiasm about a modernizing post-War world and its attendant emergent technologies. The charisma of Bertoia’s work is undeniable; one could say it sings. One of Bertoia’s “Sonambient” works will be offered by Heritage on Nov. 7, alongside one of his famous screens and one of his bush forms, in its Design Signature Auction. This gathering of substantial copper, bronze and brass Bertoia works, all of which have been added to Bertoia’s official Catalogue Raisonné, leads a design event that illuminates not just American-led innovation by the likes of Bertoia, Dale Chihuly, and Frank Lloyd Wright, but also showcases the strength of the 20th century in pieces from artists working on other continents. The auction is a testament to a powerful creative wave that began after WWII and continues to resonate.
“Drawn from private collections, the three Harry Bertoia works featured in our upcoming auction demonstrate the sculptor’s diverse body of work,” says Samantha Robinson, Heritage’s director of Decorative Art and Design. “The dynamic interplay
between forms and the negative spaces within them is on full display.” Sixteen works by glass pioneer Dale Chihuly are in this auction. The American artist’s sculptures and installations have contributed to Continued on page 10

New Scholarship Emerges On Folk Art Masterwork Watercolor Recently Acquired By Independence Seaport Museum In the late 1700s, when young boys were taught the art of navigation, it was common that they would have used a workbook to write out their examples, trigonometry equations and navigational theories. An especially rare example, which includes not only these materials needed for study but also exquisitely rendered watercolor drawings of people, ships, charts and a log from a voyage made in April 1799, was used by a boy named Cornelius van Buskirk (1776-1863). One such watercolor drawing, titled “Navigation Lesson,” which had been removed from the workbook and retained by the artist’s descendent family, was recently given to the Independence Seaport Museum (ISM) to complement the actual workbook previously given to the museum by a direct descendant’s widow. What makes this already important drawing and larger document all the more extraordinary is that new research conducted by ISM staff shows that the figures in the drawing are of the young artist and his tutor, who is believed to be none other than Commodore John Barry (1745-1803), the man regarded to be the father of the United States Navy. “The Independence Seaport Museum is thrilled to have been given this wonderful watercolor,” said Peter S. Seibert, president and CEO of ISM. “Not only is it an artistic tour de force, but we are also now able to reunite it with the original manuscript copy book in our collection. Together, they tell the story of both the father of the U.S. Navy and the young man who was his student.”

The Peter Miller Story: A Forgotten Woman Of American Modernism Morton Contemporary Gallery In Partnership With Gratz Gallery Present Exciting Show The Morton Contemporary Gallery, located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, in partnership with Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio of Doylestown, is excited to announce an upcoming exhibition of an extraordinary 20th century Modernist talent previously lost in the anals of
history, but now found. Not long ago, a treasure was unearthed in a barn in the Catskills when 250 Peter Miller paintings were discovered and then restored by the hand of longtime Princeton University conservator and gallerist, Paul Gratz. The trove of work will soon go on exhibition in
Philadelphia at the Morton Contemporary Gallery, located at 115 S. 13th St. This will take place from Saturday, Nov. 11 and run until Jan. 20, 2024. Born Henrietta Myers, American modernist and surrealist painter Peter Miller (Pennsylvania/New Mexico, 1913-96) attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1933-37. As a young woman artist at the prestigious PAFA, Henrietta saw barriers ahead in her career, in a world of artists, collectors, and critics that was dominated by men. Should she take her given name or transform her public and artistic persona into a man in order to capture the attention of a male-centered world? In her application to PAFA, she wrote that “she would rather fail at painting than succeed at anything else in life.” Ultimately, harking back to her childhood nickname of “Peter” and marrying fellow PAFA student Earle Miller in 1935, surrealist modernist Peter Miller was born. Miller came from an affluent family in Hanover, Pa., and later settled at the Rock Raymond Farm in Chester County, Pa. Reviewers of her exhibitions noted the unmistakable influence of artist Joan Miro (whose work Peter owned and whom she knew); Arthur Carles, whom she studied under; and sources in Native American culture. Throughout her lifetime, Miller came to know an illustrious coterie of artists, including the Calders, Henri Matisse, Max Ernst, and the surrealists of the time in New York City, all of whom influenced her aesthetic leanings. Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, and Paul Klee. Interestingly, the single greatest influence of her artistic vision and style may well have been born of a very special friendship with one Edith Warner, a mystic from Sante Fe, N.M., who became Peter’s mentor, and confidante. Peter, and her husband, Earle, split their time between Pennsylvania and their spiritual home in Santa Fe, where the couple eagerly escaped high society life on their large desert estate. was the single greatest influence on her creative perspective and artistic expression. Peter’s mentor, Edith, was personally connected to the San Ildefonso Pueblo, and together these two women were invited to witness sacred ceremonies and rituals, an honor granted to few white people at that time. Through the many friendships Peter made throughout Sante Fe, her body of work began to absorb a fascination and even obsession with original petroglyphs, ceremonial objects, and the soothing colors of the desert sand, sky, and canyon walls. A deep sensual painterly glow, resulting from layers and layers of paint, containing in places up to eight different colors in a small square inch, has come to define her unique aesthetic. Every painting of Miller’s is a story, reflecting her heart and soul, allowing her love of nature and beliefs in all metaphysical things to shine through her work. She believed in exploring
the magical realm, telepathy, synchronicity, alchemy, ESP, and tarot card reading. The concept of the collective subconscious captivated her curiosity and imagination. Peter and her husband often hosted dinner parties, inviting their guests to join them in storytelling and experimenting with the psychic phenomenon. Miller was a highly intellectual woman, her knowledge and interest in ancient cultures, history, and architecture is often reflected in her body of work. Steeped in the principles of theosophy, and being very familiar with the Transcendental Painting Group (TPG) of her peers, Peter Miller still remained independent in her artistic language and continued to explore her own unique vision of nature and spirituality throughout her long career as a painter. In 1986, towards the end of her life, Miller and her husband donated their beloved Miro painting, “Horse, Pipe and Red Flower (Still life with Horse),” to the Philadelphia Museum of

Art. Anne d’Harnoncourt, the director of the PMA at the time, was one of Miller’s best friends. Peter Miller was an artist, a philanthropist, a mystic, and a fearlessly courageous woman with an endless passion for nature, spirituality, and exploration. Until recently, Peter Miller has largely been a forgotten figure within the history of American Modernism. Through the discovery of the hoard of paintings, it an honor and privilege for both the Gratz Gallery and Morton Gallery to present the life work of Peter Miller. Morton Contemporary Gallery, with two locations in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, embodies an ethical as well as aesthetic vision, a commitment to equity and inclusion in tune with worldwide social movements. Owner and founder Debbie Morton aims to diversify not only the audience for fine art, but its source, by elevating the work of traditionally underrepresented artists such as women and artists of color from around the globe. The gallery’s diverse
contemporary art collection ranges from original works on canvas to sculpture, mixedmedia and photography. Over 25 innovative artists are represented and on rotation at the gallery. Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio has taken great pride in supporting the arts and communities of New Hope, Bucks County, Philadelphia, and the Delaware Valley. Over the years, Gratz Gallery has promoted and featured many important American artists from the New Hope Circle, The Philadelphia Ten, and students from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Gratz Gallery specializes in 19th and 20th century American Art, offers museum quality fine art conservation services, and has been a trusted representative for collectors in the expansion and upgrade of their fine American art collections for over 40 years. the elevation of the medium from utilitarian objects to works of art. Works from his best-known series are here, including this blown-glass three-piece “Paris Blue Basket Set” (2001) from his “Basket” series. This one, in striking blue with a yellow lip wrap, epitomizes the artist’s method of setting smaller forms within a larger vessel. Chihuly’s “Macchia” series, named for the Italian word for “spot,” are characterized by flared and undulating rims and inventive use of color, and can measure up to 4 feet in diameter. Heritage’s event features two massive “Macchia,” including a monumental ultramarine “Macchia” with yellow lip wrap from 1989. And for so many collectors and fans, Chihuly is best known for his “Chandelier” series, which he kicked off in 1992, intrigued by a chandelier’s ability to transform a space through color and light. Chihuly chandeliers are installed prominently in some of the most influential public and private institutions in the world, and a set of four

Other highlights in the event include the gilt bronze showstopper “Pomme Bouche” by celebrated French sculptor Claude Lalanne. This one, designed in 1975 and executed in 1980, embodies her surrealistic and unexpected impulse and is exactly as it is named; a set of silent bronze lips jut from a faithful bronze apple.
