through. Also, I do enjoy giving antique and vintage pocket watches and wrist watches. Getting them early means you can get them into a shop for service and back in time for giving. Finally, one of the key characteristics of Millennials is that they prefer experiences to actually owning things. So I would suggest you take a millennial to an auction. They are fun, entertaining, and sooner or later you have to put up your bidder’s paddle.

This week, I had a rare bit of time and could actually start Christmas shopping early for the ladies in my life. Regular readers know that I love to buy antiques as holiday gifts. They represent a present that is unique and certainly can grow in value. So, I started on eBay this evening. I am continually amazed what turns up there, and with pricing that is all over the place. One can tell the casual hobbyist who assumes that a Bible from the 1700s must be worth $1,500 and posts it as a rare “buy it now” option piece. Sigh! That being said, I did start with eBay and will then move on
Still, jewelry remains one of the singularly best buys in the antique marketplace. Last year, I found three pieces of Georgian paste jewelry that I gave to Kim. For 200-year-old pieces, they were valued at less than $50 each. I also love to buy odd pieces of china. Re-used as cookie plates when we visit someone, it is a lovely hostess gift and very special. One of my favorite antique Christmas presents was when I stumbled upon a Hollywood prop house that was going out of business. They handled lots of the background props, and so I could find really cool things like a plastic bone from the “X-Files” or a soda glass from “Happy Days.” The folks that I gave them to loved the gifts and still tell me about that to the present. My advice is to start early in your antiques shopping for family and friends. You don’t always find what you are looking for on the first sweep

the auction houses back in Pennsylvania and finally to the antique co-ops. What am I looking for? Well, for my youngest daughter, it is the non-video game toys that she likes. In particular, she loves miniature figures, so that is an easy find, whether Wades or vintage toys. My only caveat is that many toys that were recalled in the past have found themselves onto the secondary market, so be sure and check that out before giving the gift to a young person. For the oldest daughter, she has gotten to like vintage jewelry. That’s easy, but what she wants is the odd, unusual, Gothic, and just plain weird stuff. That takes a lot of shopping time, but I have found some cool things, including a jade ring for $25. Also, she loves pop-up books to collect, and so I hunt for those as well. My wife is more complex because she loves jewelry and knows more about it than I do.

Experience an historic Christmas with the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, Pa. This year’s Christmas Candlelight Tours will focus on the role of weaving in Pennsylvania German and Native American societies. Guided by luminaria and conveyed by a covered wagon, the tour will cover the grounds, including the Lancaster Longhouse and the 1835 Shaub House. Learn about basket making, flax processing, Native American cordage and more as you move from station to station. The evening will conclude in the Herr House’s Stube with a reading of the Christmas story from Luke 2 and singing “Silent Night” in German. “Christmas Candlelight Tours are a wonderful time to experience the beauty of the 1719 Hans Herr House while also gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of our past,” according to Joel Nofziger, director of communications for the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum. Following the tours, participants are invited to linger around the fire for hot chocolate and pretzels. Herr House smoked sausage will be available for purchase. This annual celebration runs the evenings of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Dec. 7, 8, and 9. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $6 for children between ages 7 and 12, and are free of charge for children 6 and younger. Tours run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, and Friday, Dec. 8, and from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. Advance registration is required. Tickets can be purchased at www.hansherr.org or by calling 717-464-4438. Posters, with spectacular examples that embodied a century’s worth of technological development. The top lot of the sale was Adolphe Mouron Cassandre’s promotional image for the maiden voyage of the “Normandie,” 1935, one of the most iconic posters of all time. It was purchased by a bidder in the room for $20,000. A fine selection of early ocean liner images opened the sale, as the earliest form of mass leisure transportation. Art Deco works by Jean Dupas for the London Underground performed well, with five of the six offered works finding buyers. Two extremely rare large-scale works from the same series in a different format, “Where Is This Bower Beside the Silver Thames,” 1930, and “Thence to Hyde Park, Where Much Good Company and Many Fine Ladies,” 1930 ($12,500 and $10,400, respectively), were met with great interest by bidders. American posters proved popular, led by “The Chief to California/Cajon Willem Frederick ten Broek’s “New York Exposition Pass,” 1930, an idyllic Mondiale/Holland –America Line,” 1938, sold for mountain scene by Hanson Puthuff, $9,750, a record for the artist.

An unusual work by Roger Broders, “Alger / La Ville Blanche,” 1920, broke its previous record when it sold to a collector for $4,680. The biggest surprise of the sale was the Official Yogi Bear Map of Jellystone Park, 1961, showing the locations of such amusing landmarks as “Old Faceful” and “Yogi Has Done Wrong.” Above a modest estimate of $400 to $600, the

“Vermeer And The Masters Of Genre Painting: Inspiration And Rivalry” On View Landmark Exhibition Brings To Light Relationships Between Vermeer And His Contemporaries More than 20 years after the legendary exhibition “Johannes Vermeer,” the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., presents “Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting: Inspiration and Rivalry.” On view in the West Building through Jan. 21, 2018, the exhibition examines the artistic exchanges among Dutch Golden Age painters from 1650 to 1675, when they reached the height of their technical ability and mastery at depicting domestic life. Some 65 masterpieces by Johannes Vermeer and his contemporaries, including Gerard ter Borch, Gerrit Dou, Pieter de Hooch, Nicolas Maes, Eglon van der Neer, Caspar Netscher, and Jacob Ochtervelt, are grouped by theme, composition, and technique, thereby demonstrating how these painters admired, challenged, and pushed each other to greater artistic achievement. The paintings also reflect how these masters responded to the changing artistic climate of the Dutch Republic in the third quarter of the 17th century, particularly in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, Deventer, Rotterdam, and Delft. Since 1995, the National
Gallery’s curator of northern baroque paintings, Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., has mounted more than a dozen monographic exhibitions on Dutch artists, including several featured in this exhibition. Among them are Johannes Vermeer (1995), Jan Steen (1996), Gerrit Dou (2000), Gerard ter Borch (2004–05), Frans van Mieris (2006), and Gabriel Metsu (2011). As the culmination of these monographic exhibitions, “Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting” reveals how these painters were artistically more connected than has previously been understood. “The 1995 ‘Johannes Vermeer’ show endures as one of the most significant exhibitions in the Gallery’s history. ‘Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting’ will undoubtedly have the same impact while also deeply enriching our understanding of the web of influence among 17th-century Dutch artists,” said Earl A. Powell III, director, National Gallery of Art, Washington. “This exhibition would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of the lenders, both museums and private collectors, or the support of the Hata

National Gallery Of Art Woman” (1663, Musée du Louvre), looked carefully at Van Mieris’s earlier depiction of that same theme, but enlarged his interior setting and increased the number of figures to create a more ambitious work than his former pupil produced. Vermeer, no less than his contemporaries, looked carefully at paintings by different artists, and most of the groups in this exhibition include at least one work by the Delft master. A particularly interesting connection exists between Vermeer’s “Woman with a Pearl Necklace” (c. 1662–65, Gemäldegalerie) and Van Mieris’s “Woman before a Mirror” (c. 1662, Gemäldegalerie). The similar subjects of these paintings, in which a woman is shown standing in profile before a table and adjusting her necklace, was not their invention but that of Ter Borch in his “Young Woman at her Toilet with a Maid” (c. 1650–51, The Metropolitan Museum of Art). Through such juxtapositions, one is able to understand the distinctive qualities that each of these artists brought to their subjects. For example, the woman in Vermeer’s “Woman with a Pearl Necklace” has a timelessness that evokes inner strength and purity, thus providing this genre scene with a moral and philosophical underpinning more traditionally associated with history paintings. ConnectVermeer.org More than a 1,000 connections have been drawn between the genre scenes by the 17 leading artists of this period, including similarities in

between artists such as cosigned documents, as with Vermeer and Ter Borch, a few known teacher-student relationships, including Dou and Van Mieris, and anecdotes, for example, that Steen and Van Mieris were reputedly drinking buddies. The paintings in the exhibition are presented in groups that illustrate how artists inspired each other in their subject matter, figural motifs, stylistic decisions, and painting techniques. Subjects include women writing letters, musical duets, astronomers, lace makers, and a woman holding a parrot. One group compares three paintings of women with lutes by Van Mieris, Van Der Neer, and Vermeer while another demonstrates how a number of artists adapted an important pictorial motif in their work, a female figure standing with her back to the viewer. The motif was introduced by Ter Borch in his renowned Gallant Conversation (“The Paternal Admonition”) (c. 1654, Rijksmuseum) and then utilized in a variety of ways by De Hooch, Steen, and Ochtervelt. The direction of influence did not strictly flow from masters to their followers. In many ways, Ter Borch and Dou were the forefathers of high-life genre painting in The Netherlands. They were incredibly influential to the younger generation of artists, many of whom were their pupils. However, the two painters also studied and emulated the work of their admirers. For instance, Dou, in his painting “The Dropsical

Final Colloquium Of 2017 Explores Historic Barns Of Southeastern Pennsylvania Greg Huber Presents Story Of Region’s Collection Of Extant Barns LancasterHistory.org concludes its 2017 season of Regional History Colloquia on Thursday, Dec. 7, with Greg Huber presenting “The Historic Barns of Southeastern Pennsylvania,” the story of this region’s collection of extant barns. This region of the Keystone State – Lehigh, Bucks, and Lancaster counties – is one of the earliest-settled areas in North America and is home to
an astounding 20,000 standing barns, in various states of repair, from as early as the 1700s. Huber will discuss the primary factors that have determined the fundamental structures and appearances of the six great barn classifications. Featured topics include architectural aspects and regionalisms, dates of construction, survival of 18th-century examples, mysterious decorations, and barn
preservation. Huber’s presentation will include representative photographs, building plan sketches, charts conveying the prevalence of types, and a glossary of barn terms. Greg Huber is a barn and house historian, consultant and owner of Past Perspectives and Eastern Barn Consultants, historic cultural resource companies. Huber has specialized in house and barn architecture of Holland
Dutch and Pennsylvania SwissGerman culture areas that include more than 8,000 vernacular houses and barns. He has authored more than 210 articles on architecture and is co-author of two books – the second edition of “The New World Dutch Barn” (2001) and “Stone Houses – Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania’s Bucks County and Brandywine Valley” (2005). He has also led 60 tours and given more than
180 lectures on architecture in the past 25-plus years. He won the Alice Kenney Award and the Allen Noble Book Award issued by the Pioneer America Society. The Regional History Colloquium is a series of presentations hosted by LancasterHistory.org throughout the year. Presenters at the colloquium are esteemed scholars and historians who have published works on
historical issues relating to southeastern Pennsylvania and its wider borders. The colloquium, “The Historic Barns of Southeastern Pennsylvania,” will take place on Thursday, Dec. 7, in Ryder Hall at LancasterHistory.org, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, Pa. A speaker’s reception and book signing will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the presentation at 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Poppin’ Fresh: Vintage 3-D Pop-Up Cards Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson “Boys! Girls! Men! Women! If you know just 20 people, you can make at least $50 in your spare time! Because, everyone you know loves spectacular, nationally famous greeting cards by Wallace Brown!” Well! Who could pass up an offer like that? Snazzy cards and $50 in pocket money! (“More likely $100$200!”) Plenty of folks in the

Top of the line though, and just right for the futuristic ’50s and ’60s: “Surprise Action Pop-Up Cards,” “leaping off the page in three dimensions!” Nowadays, even the most mundane movie is released in “3-D.” But, when first introduced in the 1950s, “3-D” was something extra-special. Once
the cardboard glasses with their varicolored lenses (one red, one blue/green) were perched precariously on your nose, it was time to sit back and thrill, as assorted Bwana Devils and Robot Monsters popped off the screen, practically landing in your lap. Capturing that similar effect in print took a bit more effort. The “3D Movie Magazine,” for instance, came with its own pair of cardboard glasses, so you could successfully view the otherwise blurry pics of “your favorite stars in full, rounded three-dimension.” A “3-D” greeting card was another story. Here, origamilike paper folds created an interior “surprise.” When the card was opened, the folds

Said Wallace Brown, “They’ll snap up two, three, six or more boxes right on the spot! Why, you’ll be taking orders right and left, and you’ll keep 50 cents of every dollar you take in!” But 20 potential buyers? Even though it was “no money down - don’t send a penny,” was this a risk worth taking? Wallace Brown had the answer: “Don’t know 20 people? Of Continued on page 19

Amazing Fantasy #15 - The First Appearance Of Spider-Man - Signed By Stan Lee, Sells For $13,750 At Bruneau & Co. A rare copy of Marvel Comics Amazing Fantasy #15 from August 1962, the first appearance of Spider-Man in a comic book, signed by the legendary artist-illustrator Stan Lee, sold for $13,750 at a Fall Toy, Comic and Comic Art Auction held Oct. 28 by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, online and in the firm’s gallery at 63 Fourth Ave. in Cranston, R.I. The comic, graded at CBCS Gold Label 2.5, is desirable to collectors because it not only introduced the iconic SpiderMan to the comic book-crazy readers of the era, but also the other peripheral characters, such as Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Flash Thompson and Liz Allen. The fact that it was signed by Stan Lee (witnessed

Joe action figure dolls from the collection of a former Hasbro employee in Rhode Island, plus other rare and collectible comics. Over 300 lots of pop culture items, curated from collections across the country, crossed the auction block that day. Participation was strong. “It’s amazing how every auction gets more diverse and interesting as more attention is given to pop culture these days,” said Bruneau & Co. president Kevin Bruneau. Travis Landry, the firm’s director of Pop Culture, added, “It

It just goes to prove that the best of everything will always sell.” “It was a thrill to sell the copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 and the Action Pilot dress uniform set,” said Landry. He was referring to the circa-1964 Hasbro G.I. Joe Action Pilot dress uniform equipment set, which finished at $2,688 and included a dress jacket, dress pants and dress shirt. Each piece was factory sealed in the original cellophane, with a G.I. Joe helmet form sticker. The results for G.I. Joe went well beyond pre-sale estimates.
