After an extended closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State is excited to announce that it will reopen its doors on Wednesday, Feb. 10. The free-admission museum has instituted a new timed-ticketing system and updated health protocols to ensure the safety of all visitors. “We are thrilled to finally reopen our doors to the public and to do so by placing the welfare and safety of our visitors as our top priority, said Erin M. Coe, director of the Palmer Museum of Art. “Even with the COVID-19 restrictions in place, we are confident visitors will enjoy a self-guided tour of our permanent collection and special exhibitions. Visitors to the Palmer Museum must reserve a free timed-entry ticket online via the museum’s website (www.palmer museum.psu.edu) prior to arriving at the museum. Once inside, museum-goers will be assisted by new visitor services associates who will answer questions and help guests make the most of their visit to the Palmer. Capacity in the building will be limited to 30 people. To reduce gathering and lines, there will be two reservation slots available for up to 15 visitors each hour for an hour-long stay in the galleries. No public tours will be offered until further notice. The timed-ticketing entry will be contactless. Upon entering, visitors will check in by tapping their phone on the
pedestal at the visitor services desk before proceeding through the museum to the galleries or the museum store. Visitors without advance reservations must check in at the front desk to request a timedentry ticket. All visitors will be asked to comply with Penn State and the Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines intended to keep everyone safe and limit risk during the ongoing COVID19 pandemic. Visitors must wear masks or face coverings, maintain a six-foot distance between other patrons, and are encouraged to sanitize their hands at stations that will be located throughout the museum. Staff will be sanitizing hightouch common areas throughout the day. The Palmer has also modified its public hours for the duration of the pandemic. It will be open to the public on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The last timed ticket will be processed at 4:15 p.m. The museum will be closed to the public on Monday and Tuesday. There are many reasons to return to the Palmer, including the outstanding and everexpanding permanent collection and new exhibitions for
2021. For those not yet ready to visit the museum in person, the museum will continue offering its full slate of engaging virtual programs and events for the duration of the spring semester. Plans for the spring include an array of educational content and online offerings for the Penn State community, K-12 teachers and students, as well as for families, children, and adults from the greater community. For information and updates on all reopening procedures or programs, visit www.palmermuseum.psu.edu. About the Palmer The Palmer Museum of Art on the Penn State University Park campus is a free-admission arts resource for the university and surrounding communities in central Pennsylvania. The museum presents 10 exhibitions each year, and, with 11 galleries, a printstudy room, a 150-seat auditorium, and an outdoor sculpture garden, the Palmer Museum of Art is the leading cultural resource for the region. The Palmer receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and from the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. Bodnar’s To Sell Extensive Collection Of “Magic: The Gathering” Cards Online-Only Auction Set For Feb. 18 Last summer, Joe Bodnar of Bodnar’s Auctions, based in Edison, N.J., received a phone call about an estate collection of “Magic: The Gathering” cards. The large collection had been left to a man from a friend who had recently passed away. At that time, Joe Bodnar didn’t realize how big the collection was, what condition they were in, or whether they were new or older cards. After some research, it was clear that this collection had value, but how much value? After a few phone calls to several experts in the field and a visit by an expert for an evaluation of the collection, it was
clear the consignor was sitting on a small fortune. It didn’t take long for Bodnar to realize the monetary value depended on the grade. Research on the Black Lotus card showed values between $1,000 and $100,000, again depending on the grade. Bodnar contacted Beckett grading and sent 300 of the cards to be graded, mostly Alpha and Beta cards. The one problem they had was how to ship the cards to Texas and ensure their safe arrival. An armored car picked up the collection from New Jersey and drove it to Texas. “This was the most effective way to send it. In the 28 years I have conducted auctions, this was a first, where we had an armed guard pick up the collection. It was exciting,” said Bodnar. Four months later, an email arrived that the cards were ready. They ranged mostly 7 and 9 grades. This was fantastic news for Bodnar. The collection spans from
information if needed. Locati further commentContinued from page 1 ed, “There is a little of everybidders are encouraged to thing in the February sale: contact Locati to ask ques- furniture, glass, silver and tions or request additional even a corkscrew collection.”
1993-2006. The highlights of the Alpha collection are three rare Black Lotus cards. Only 1,100 of these cards were printed, which makes this a soughtafter card. The first Black Lotus came in a 7.5 grade and will have an estimate of $20,000-$40,000. Another Black Lotus card with a grade of 6 will also be estimated at $20,000$40,000, and a 3.5 will be estimated at $10,000$20,000. Other rare cards in the Alpha set include Timetwister graded at 8.5, estimated $5,000$10,000; M o x Emerald

This collection features almost a complete collection of the first three years made for “Magic: The Gathering” as well as many rare complete sets spanning the first 10 years of production. This sale will be titled “The History of Magic: The Gathering” and should live up to its name. Other highlights include a Timewalk, Ancestral Recall, and Mox Ruby from the Beta Set, another Black Lotus from the

Also included are cards from the Arabian Nights Set, Antiquities Set, Legends, Revised and majority of every deck made until 2006. Most of the sets are complete, with most of the foil sets near complete as well. The auction will have more than 400 lots. The entire collection is estimated at $200,000-$400,000. Bidding is currently ongoing at Liveauctioneers, Invaluable, Auction Zip and on Bodnar’s website. The auction will be broadcasted on Liveauctioneers with a live feed of the auctioneer describing and selling all lots in the
