Locati Achieves Strong Prices In Americana Collection

Broderie Perse Chintz Applique Quilt, Ca. 1835, Probably New Jersey, Brings $15,500

Locati LLC of Pineville, Bucks County, Pa., presented The Americana Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr. sale on May 19.

Participation for the auction came from five competing online platforms, absentee bids and a strong floor presence. “We had a full house for the live auction,” commented Michael Locati, co-owner. “People made an effort to travel for the auction, and it was great to meet so many friendly and knowledgeable collectors and dealers,” he continued.

The sale consisted of 263 quality lots, all Americana with the exception of a small collection of fine antique rugs. “We think a collection of this size and quality is a perfect fit for our company, and we prioritize detailed cataloging and enough pictures to give bidders confidence,” remarked Locati.

Highlights included a New Jersey girlhood pictorial needlework house sampler, which hammered at $7,250, and a Broderie Perse chintz applique quilt, probably New Jersey, ca. 1835, soared to $15,500. A miniature Pennsylvania Sheraton tiger maple chest, Chester County, had a strong high bid of $5,000, and a Thomas Stretch Philadelphia Queen Anne walnut tall case clock had a healthy bid of $10,000.

Prices reported are hammer prices and do not include buyer’s premium. A Serapi, Heriz, Northwest Persia, 19th century, rug, realized $6,500, and an unusual Pennsylvania Sheraton walnut splay leg stand brought $2,100. A coin silver meat skewer by Richard Humphreys sold for $1,000, and a Pennsylvania folk art painted and stenciled framed mirror, $1,500.

Locati is located at 761 Durham Rd, Pineville, Pa. (For GPS purposes, use Furlong 18925).

Understanding the Antiques & Collectibles Pecking Order

Here’s a concept that’s rarely discussed: “ The Antiques & Collectible Pecking Order ”. What I mean is that there are different levels within the Antiques & Collectibles trade, and it’s sometimes interesting to watch an item move from one level to the other, and how “value” changes at each level. This is a true story and a perfect example of what I’m talking about. Some years ago my friend purchased an Antique country wooden bucket, in original blue milk-based paint, at a Garage Sale (level #1) for $1. We met the next day at a Flea Market (level #2) where we were both set-up and he sold it to me for $10. It was a fair price and I had no intention of selling it. My plan was to take it home and add it to my collection.

Temporarily I placed it in my van. The next thing I knew another dealer who happened to be shopping the Flea Market saw the bucket and asked its price. I said it wasn’t for sale. Before long the offer was $200 and I couldn’t say “ No ” any longer. I accepted the $200 and split it with my friend. I later learned that the new owner was a highend antiques dealer. He took it to the high-end Antiques Show (level #3) where he was exhibiting that weekend and I heard through the grapevine that he sold it for $500 to a serious and wealthy collector (level #4).

The point of this vignette is that something purchased for $1 at a Garage Sale on a Saturday morning, traded hands several times, subsequently selling for $10, then $200, and finally for $500, on the very next day. This illustrates the way merchandise can move through the Antiques & Collectibles Chain or Pecking Order, until it finally reaches the ultimate retail buyer.

What a great business we’re in.

WHAT’S IT WORTH? Eventually almost every collector reaches the point where they decide to sell their collection. Age, health, death,

divorce, declining interest, a pending move or downsizing, and sometimes even debt or financial obligations motivate individuals to sell their collections. There’s a lot of great merchandise coming back into the marketplace today, with even more returning in the coming years. Which is great news if you’re a collector because, with declining prices and fresh merchandise, there probably hasn’t been a better time to collect over the past 25 years. Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Homage To Angus (Part Two)

In my last column, I was nostalgically reflecting on the closing of the antiques portion of Black Angus in Adamstown, Pa. Here are a few more stories from the backbench about the spot.

Walking Angus for a novice could be daunting. There were no clear intuitive passes, and both restrooms and food were sprinkled through in a more random manner than a modern designer would have liked. Still, it added to the joy and chaos of an early Sunday morning. One could see dealers who purchased container loads of items from Europe and who had vast stores of Black Forest carvings,

painted Eastern European chests, and the like. There were jewelry dealers with their loops dangling from chains who could make you a deal that would beat any shopping mall store for a cheap setting. The rug dealers were the most intimidating to me. They opened often only when they felt like it, and their booths were shown to be closed with a rope across the front. When they did open, the rugs were often rolled tightly so one was forced to ask rather than browse. And yet they always seemed to have customers.

Did I shop at Angus? Absolutely! Just this year, I found great treasures there. My wife’s Christmas and anniversary presents came from booth dealers there. When we needed lamps for our new house, Josh Unruh was the only place to go to find what we wanted. Rewired and safe to use, they were ready to go. Greg Kramer always has choice smalls that he put out on the table where he sat. Some had come out the day before and others were brought from his vast reserve of treasures. The rhino cookie cutter is still my wife’s favorite. Angus was a significant

force in the American antiques world. Dealers from high priced galleries in New York would come to shop and to sell. Collectors going to and from Brimfield would hit Angus and the other shops. The turnover of merchandise was always high and good things were to be found. Even antiques shows in the region would delay their Sunday openings, ostensibly for church, but more realistically so that dealers could hit Angus and the markets for new items.

When I returned to the region after having been away for so many years, I was saddened to see all the markets so empty. Instead of being packed to the walls at 9 a.m., you could now swing a crock through the aisles and not hit anyone. The internet impacted the trade, and then there was Covid. Some dealers passed away. The ultimate evil, minimalist decorating, did no help either. Sleeping on a mat with white walls is just not something for a collector to do! (Saying this, I recall my mentor in college whose collections included items standing on top of the thermostats in rooms).

Inventive Quilts By Black Artists In Summer Exhibition

“Patterns In Abstraction: Black Quilts From The High’s Collection” Now On View

Over the past six years, the High Museum of Art has more than quintupled its holdings of quilts made by Black women. In “Patterns in Abstraction: Black Quilts from the High’s Collection,” on view from June 28 to Jan. 5, 2025, the museum brings a number of these recent acquisitions together to answer a larger question: “How can quilts

made by African American women change how we view the history of abstraction?”

The exhibition includes pieces by well-known quilters from Gee’s Bend, Alabama, such as Mary Lee Bendolph, Louisiana Bendolph and Lucy T. Pettway, along with works by Atlanta-based quilters such as Marquetta Johnson and early 20th-century examples by makers once known. Many of the works are on view at the museum for the first time, and all were made by quilters in the Southeastern United States.

“In recent years, we have committed to increasing our holdings of quilts by Black women and have grown the collection to more than 50 works since 2017,” said Rand Suffolk, the museum’s director. “Our expanded holdings allow us to make quilts a

I will miss Angus for sure, as will others. Will it stop me from going to Adamstown? No, not at all. I firmly believe in the future of the antiques world and that the worm will turn. It is a cyclical business that will return to where it once was. For those shops and malls and flea markets that remain, it will be wonderful. And for those of us who recall with affection the Black Angus, it will be sad.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

reoccurring and dynamically changing fixture within our collection galleries as well as to develop exhibitions that further the dialogue around the significance of these works within the broader and overlapping histories of American and modern art, of which ‘Patterns in Abstraction’ is the first.”

include variations on “Birds in the Air” and “Housetop Themes,” two centuries-old quilt patterns that are geometric distillations of natural phenomenon and human made environments, while others have deeper meanings as memorials to family members. Presented as objects made for use and with the artistic intent to represent people, places and things abstractly and through layered symbolism, these quilts offer a larger window into how the production of nonacademic artists can transform our understanding of artistic innovation in American art.

In preparation for the exhibition, the museum convened a group of more than a dozen local and nationally recognized quilters, academics and curators in May 2023 to discuss the central question of the show and issues related to the future of collecting and displaying Black quilts.

that the High is in a unique position to build on the foundation laid by other champions of scholarship and preservation of Black quilts, especially given its long history of embracing artists who challenge conventional ideas about art and its proximity to the Atlanta Quilt Festival, the country’s largest annual festival dedicated to Black quilts,” said Katherine Jentleson, the High’s senior curator of American art and Merrie and Dan Boone curator of folk and self-taught art. “My hope is that this exhibition can help shift the conversation about quilters as artists who made things that don’t just look like abstract art but are abstract art. Quilters deserve credit for making the same kinds of choices about form, color and symbolic meaning as those typically male and white artists who we have historically privileged as the innovators of abstraction.”

Over the last two decades, Dr. Burg has had the opportunity to visit and study many of Pennsylvania’s historic African American cemeteries and burial grounds. To date, over 150 burial grounds have been identified across the state that were created primarily by or for the burial of people of color. These sites represent unique spaces reflecting the culture, traditions, and histories of local African American communities. His presentation
