Each January, the historic Delaware River town of Yardley, Pa., becomes a destination point for antiques enthusiasts during the Yardley Community Centre’s Annual Antiques Show. The show will take place on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15 and 16. Antiquers know not to miss this first show of the new year in Bucks County and newcomers are encouraged to discover the “finds” that keep folks returning each year. Not many antique shows can match the longevity and tradition of the Yardley Community Centre show. The key to the show’s success is the quality and variety of antiques provided by the dedicated dealers who set-up at the show and the collectors and dealers who attend it every year. The show has always had a variety of antiques with an emphasis on good country antiques. This year, featured items will include primitives and early smalls, both country and formal furniture, quilts and other textiles, folk art, china, silver, pottery, glassware, jewelry, dolls and books. Twenty dealers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia will fill the

sold above estimate. In particular, an unusual French garniture set sold for $9,000, while an Irish silver tureen bearing the family monogram sold for $4,800. There was huge interest in a collection of Egyptian and Roman antiquities from Commander Henry Gorringe that had been on loan to the Worcester Art Museum. Gorringe was responsible for moving the obelisk of Thutmosis III, also known as Cleopatra’s Needle, from Alexandria, Egypt, to Central Park in New York City in 1879. Several lots of Roman coins and Egyptian artifacts from the collection brought spirited Internet and phone bidding and were sold in the $5,700 to $6,000 range. The real contest though, was for a set of three Tiffany printing plates that sold for $6,600 to a phone bidder. Fine art led many of the top lots. An oil-on-canvas by Felix Ziem of ships in a harbor sold for $15,600 while a painting titled “Desert Travelers” by Fredrick Arthur Bridgman sold for $12,000. Other items of interest that did particularly well were a set of discharge papers bearing Abraham Lincoln’s signature that sold for $5,400, and an Alvan Clark & Sons brass telescope owned by prominent zoologist and Harvard oceanographer Henry Bigelow, first director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute that sold for $6,600. The collection featured signed lithographs from American painters Robert Rauschenberg, Ellsworth Kelly, and Roy Lichtenstein which all sold in the $6,000 to $14,000 range. Several early cardboard collage works by Rauschenberg, from his “Cardbird Series” brought $6,000, while lithographs by Frank Stella sold between $4,800 to $5,500. The provenance of the Tremaine family helped boost prices beyond their high estimates. An original Bridget Riley (British, b. 1931), abstract silkscreen print, signed and dated 1964 in pencil, edition, 37/50, lit up the Internet. With several phone lines vying for the piece as well, it was finally sold for $32,600. A Hershey collage, by American artist Al Hansen (American 1927-95), fabricated of Hershey chocolate bar wrappers on masonite sold for $15,600. Paintings from other estates in the sale also brought strong prices. “On Gilbert Head,” a Maine landscape by American artist Stephen Etnier (American (1903-84), signed and dated 1935 with an exhibit label from the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh, Pa., sold for $15,600, while five original Johann Berthelsen (1833-1972) New York City snow scenes sold within estimate between $5,400 to $6,000. prices on items are just outrageous. It takes me back to that old view that antiques collecting is purely the purview of the rich. I only recall ever visiting one shop in Canada (and that was in the old German settlements around Waterloo) where the prices were reasonable and the quality was good for the items. The rest were pretty overpriced for incredibly prosaic goods. Collecting is a worldwide phenomenon. I have met collectors from across the globe who universally share a passion for the old and, dare I say, “second hand.

Conversely, the English love their ceramics and silver and I am just as impressed by the strong bidding on high quality works, particularly those from the Continent. For those of us who have tried shopping for antiques in a foreign country, it can be a real shock. Having traveled extensively in Canada, I am always surprised by the absence of high-grade antiques for sale at reasonable prices. Whether in Alberta, Quebec, Ontario or the Maritimes, I have seen antiques shops where the

This same set I purchased on eBay for $50. Conversely, I saw a really uninspired piece of 20th-century English silver that would have languished in a dealer’s booth for years sell for crazy money. It is proof that the auction is the final determinate of price. The other thing that is fascinating to watch is what is popular in the UK versus the United States. Perhaps growing up attending the abundance of Pennsylvania country auctions that I did, it amazes me to see English buyers breathlessly bidding on decorator items that are

While the show has had its share of scandals and allegations, it is great fun to watch. First and foremost, because as a collector who has bought and sold well (and more often, not so well) at auction, I can feel both the pain of the losers and the joy of the winners. The other night I watched a boxed tin windup train set sell for only 10 pounds (roughly $15 to $16).

It confirmed to me that many of these folks have never been to a country sale, antiques mall, flea market or a real antiques show. More is the pity! So, of late, I have been watching the BBC show “Bargain Hunt that can be caught on YouTube. This long running English TV series pits two couples (husbands/ wives/partners/siblings/

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century Oh, You Beautiful Dolls: The World Of Madame Alexander By DonaldBrian Johnson “A child’s doll is precious. It is a friend who shares her secrets, joys, and sorrows . . . something beautiful that is a joy forever.” -Madame Alexander Beatrice Alexander was the grand dame of dollmaking. From “Snow White” to “Cleopatra,” “Anne of Green Gables” to most of “The Sound of Music” gang, Madame Alexander dolls ran the gamut of popular culture. There were so many choices, and little girls just couldn’t get enough

As Alexander herself put it, “Once you have one, you will want to have another, until you have collected friends from all around the wide, wide world.” Born in 1895, Alexander seemed predestined for her future career. The family lived above her father’s doll hospital. In a 1978 recording, she recalled her humble beginnings: “We could hardly get by on the income from the doll hospital alone, so we bought shopworn sample dolls from Germany. My mother would clean them, comb their hair, and make them as presentable as possible, and we would sell them in our shop. “After the first World War began, the importation of all dolls ceased, and we found ourselves with no dolls to sell. To help my parents, I designed my first dolls. They were a little Red Cross nurse and a baby doll. The demand for them was so great, my father had to work day and night to fill the orders. This helped them through the most difficult times.” “My little daughter was the inspiration for my first commercial baby doll. We called her ‘Billie,’ and this is how the Alexander doll began.” Forget “Tiny Tears” and “Chatty Cathy.” The real novelty doll was one by Madame Alexander because it didn’t

In the words of Alexander, “A doll can be your baby or your friend. I always say you can tell your dolly your secrets, and you may be sure she will keep them. Dolls live in the hearts of children. That
is where they truly come alive.” Alexander was a canny entrepreneur, ready to capitalize on the day’s trendsetters. Her “Scarlett O’Hara” was the first doll licensed as a book/movie tie-in. Such Hollywood stars as skater Sonja Henie and child phenomenon Margaret O’Brien saw themselves re-envisioned as dolls, while a World War II series paid tribute to women in the service. In the 1930s, when multiple births were still a rarity, Canada’s Dionne Quintuplets were headline grabbers, so Alexander made sure her tiny fans could acquire Quint dolls. Some came with accessories: sleep baskets, a wooden bed, and even an unfortunately fright-wigged rendition of their physician, Dr. Dafoe. Multiples proved an Alexander specialty: for the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, three dozen renditions of the Queen-to-be and her entourage were released.

“Crown Of The Andes” Acquired By Metropolitan Museum
The Crown of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, known as the “Crown of the Andes,” Colombia; Popayán, circa 1660 (diadem) and circa 1770 (arches), Gold, repoussé and chased; emeralds, was purchased by the Met, through the Lila Acheson Wallace Gift, acquisitions fund and the Mary Trumbull Adams Fund. Latin American art. As the work’s early date suggests, our commitment extends to the art of all periods of the region,” said Campbell. “Created through the virtuosity of the Spanish Colonial artists, the crown serves as a vivid expression of the cultural values and aspirations of the community within which it was made and used.” Measuring 13.5 inches
(34.3 cm) in height and 13.25 inches (33.7 cm) in diameter, the crown weighs 2.4 kg (5.3 pounds). It was constructed in two sections, the diadem first, in around 1660, and the arches second, around 1770. The estimated weight of the distinctive deep bluishgreen emeralds is 846.15 carats, with the largest a 24-carat gemstone known as the “Atahualpa emerald.” It was a common practice in the Spanish world to bestow lavish gifts, including jewels and sumptuous garments, on sacred images of the Virgin. Such gifts were used to petition for her intercession or to give thanks for it, and they point to an interrelationship between the prestige of an image, the magnitude of devotion to it, and the richness of its adornment. Although a number of votive crowns from the Colonial period survive in cathedral treasuries in Spanish America, few are of comparable size and quality. The “Crown of the Andes,” which had been privately owned in the United States since 1936, had only rarely been on public view.

Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, recently announced that one of the most important examples of goldsmith’s work from Colonial Spanish America, a magnificent 17th- to 18th-century repoussé and chased gold crown with 443 emeralds, has been acquired by the museum. The richly ornamented Crown of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, known as the “Crown of the Andes,” takes the form of a diadem encircled by vinework set with emerald clusters in the shape of flowers, topped by imperial arches and a cross-bearing orb. Made to adorn a statue in the cathedral of Popayán in the Spanish viceroyalty of New Granada (now Colombia), the crown represents one of the most distinctive artistic achievements of a region whose wealth derived from the mining of gold and emeralds. It is on view at the Met in Gallery 357. “This important acquisition, an anchor for the development of a new area of collection at the Met, signals the museum’s renewed interest in

Wishing Doesn’t Make It Real If there’s one thing that lays out the red carpet for forgers, counterfeiters, and fakers of all types, it’s that deep desire in collectors and connoisseurs to discover an unknown piece, a missing historical link, or to find that one coveted piece that will be the envy of every other collector. They want it to be real so desperately that they can overlook all the red flags, sometimes without even realizing they’re doing it. With that theme in mind, here are a few cases where a strong desire for something to be real, despite fervent advice to the contrary, didn’t change the truth. Bogus Beauty In 2003, the Bolton Museum in England paid $935,000 for what they believed was a 3,300-yearold Egyptian statue. Known as the “Amarna princess, the 20-inch tall alabaster torso, missing its arms, head, and lower legs, was supposedly a representation of the princess daughter of the pharaoh Akhenaten and Queen Nefertiti. It was authenticated by the British Museum, and the authentication was confirmed by
experts at Christie’s. Its importance as a 1350 B.C. sculpture was enthusiastically acclaimed in print. Three years later, it was discovered that the only correct belief about the statue was that it was made of alabaster. The fact is that the piece was made in the 21st century by a forger in England who crafted the statue in his workshop using a modern hammer and chisel. Because connoisseurs and experts involved considered this a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, their judgments were clouded by the desire to own such a rarity. Princely Passion And speaking of Nefertiti, a famous bust of the ancient Egyptian princess that has attracted millions of tourists to the Berlin Museum where it resides has been under fire as a fake. Originally purported to be over 3,400 years old, at least two historians have written books claiming that the smiling beauty is less than 100 years old. Radiography has shown that Nefertiti’s image is actually plaster over another limestone carving, which makes the piece impossible to date.
Truth being stranger than fiction, a Swiss art historian has an explanation as to why it was simply good manners that brought the piece to this point in history. Supposedly the bust was commissioned by a German archaeologist who wanted to test ancient pigments on it, but when Prussian Prince Johann Georg became enamored with the figure, believing it was an authentic antiquity, the archaeologist didn’t want to make the prince feel “stupid and allowed him to continue believing the piece was real.
Pietro Pennelli. Pennelli had claimed to have excavated it himself, but a few years after the museum received it, Pennelli’s brother admitted he had made the sarcophagus himself. Even though this began a major controversy over its authenticity, museum curators wanted to believe the piece was real and continued displaying it. It took 60 years for the museum to finally acknowledge that the sarcophagus was a fake, even though there were some ridiculously obvious issues, like the fact that the female figure on top of the casket was wearing 19th century underwear. Other problems included the position of the figures, which was completely different from any Etruscan sculptures from the sixth century B.C., and an inscription that was taken straight from a gold brooch in the Louvre. It’s interesting to note that Enrico Pennelli, Pietro’s brother who admitted to making the sarcophagus, worked at the Louvre.
Suspicious Sarcophagus Then there was the case of the Etruscan sarcophagus that was the pride of the British Museum for 60 years, until it was proven to be a modern fake in 1935. The terra cotta casket was purchased by the museum with the belief that it dated back to the sixth century B.C. The casket’s exterior was filled with painted images, and on top were two large figures of a semi-reclining married When Experts Lie‌ couple. The casket was sold to We always talk about conthe museum by antiquities sulting experts before investdealer Alessandro Castellani, ing in antiques and colwho had purchased it from lectibles, but the title
“expert isn’t always synonymous with “honest. This time, the two experts in question committed their alleged deception quite publicly; they appeared on the popular “Antiques Roadshow in 1997 and were accused of staging at least one phony appraisal on the show in an effort to strengthen their reputation as Civil War-era weapon and artifact experts. However, even worse was the fact that they defrauded at least two families with famous Civil War ancestors. Perhaps the worst deception was committed against a family descended from General George Pickett, best known for Pickett’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. This same pair of experts talked the Pickett family into selling valuable memorabilia handed down through the family from their famous ancestor so it could be displayed in a museum. The pair paid the family $88,000 for a variety of letters, artifacts, and photos, supposedly on behalf of the museum. The trouble was that they had no connection to the museum and were not working on its behalf; instead,
they sold these items to the museum for $880,000. Fortunately, General Pickett’s great-great-grandson, George E. Pickett V, won his lawsuit against these two men and was awarded $800,000. Two lessons we can learn from all of these cases: first, don’t let your heart rule your head when you want that piece of art or collectible to be authentic, and second, always go to the source when someone who wants to buy your item or collection claims to be representing a museum or any other establishment. If you get an offer to contribute precious heirlooms or other valuables you’ve collected, even if a convincing story goes with it, go straight to the source and call the establishment directly. Talk to the curator or whoever is in charge (and use a phone number from their website, not a number given to you by the “representative) to confirm that the offer actually came from them. As another year comes to a close, I wish everyone a happy holiday season filled with wonderful memories and a new year of exciting discoveries.

Tiffany Studios leaded glass lamps were the spotlights of this auction. Four examples claimed top spots in this sale’s overall results.
