n old Tennessee estate that includes collections of important antique Indian baskets and Southern folk art serves as the centerpiece of John W. Coker’s Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, auction. All forms of bidding will be available, including live bidding via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers. “As we delved into the contents of this estate, it very quickly became evident to us that the owner had the heart of a collector and the eye of a knowledgeable buyer. This is by no means an average estate,” said auction company owner and principal auctioneer John W. Coker. More than 125 Cherokee Indian baskets display a pleasing variety of forms and intricate patterns, some incorporating color. form, a rare CK Japan Santa car was described in the auction catalog as being “exceedingly rare…possibly the only known example.” Depicting Santa at the wheel of an open roadster decorated with images of children and toys, the 7-inch pre-WWII toy went three times the high estimate and then some, closing at $37,760. The Christmas gift giver was the subject of much attention during the holiday section of the sale, which featured the exceptional Tom Fox estate collection. Lot 2070, a rare 19inch German belsnickle depicting Father Christmas with a glass icicle beard in a rich purple robe, holding a feather tree, sold for $20,600 against an estimate of $5,000-$7,000. An early pull toy comprising a jolly Santa riding in a wood and leather covered sleigh drawn by four glasseyed reindeer, measured an impressive 27 inches in length. The toy is now off to celebrate Christmas at a new home after selling for $17,700. A rare Vindex cast-iron motorcycle with sidecar was from a production run of less than two years. Painted green with a khaki-color driver and rider, the 8-1/2 inch spokewheeled cycle retained its Vindex label on the rear fender. Near mint, it zipped off to a new owner for $25,960. Doorstop fans had two large showcases of figural animals, buildings, characters, and people from which to choose. Each example had been evaluated by doorstop expert Jeanne Bertoia; many came with provenance from her personal collection, thus adding a premium to their value. The top doorstop lot was an A.M. This circa 1912 German Greenblatt Studios whimsical Carette tinplate limousine, dog, copyrighted 1929. In prismeasuring 16 inches long, sold tine to near mint condition, it brought $15,340 against an for $21,240. estimate of $800-$1,200. After the sale, Bertoia Cincinnati was presented with a full complement of deck appointments, including four stacks, four lifeboats, searchlights, lifeboats, and guns. The 34-inch-long vessel had been entered in the sale with a confident $40,000-$60,000 estimate. Its companion at the top of prices realized was a circa 1909 to 1915 Marklin George Washington, a 37-inch-long clockwork four-stack ocean liner with several observation decks, a multitude of funnels, and numerous lifeboats. All prices include the 20.5 percent buyer’s premium. Another important Marklin boat, a circa 1907 to 1912 clockwork luxury yacht Priscilla, featured a canopycovered passenger area on its upper deck, plus wraparound railing, an attractive port, and window appointments. The 14inch beauty more than tripled its high estimate to complete its pleasure cruise at $40,120. The ultimate crossover toy, blending comic character with motoring, a coveted 1930s Tipp & Co. Mickey and Minnie Mouse on a clockwork motorcycle was expected to realize $25,000-$28,000. Its status as the premier Disney toy brought out the bidders, including one who captured the whimsical mice for $56,050. Auctions associate Rich Bertoia remarked that there has been an untypically strong buzz in the toy buying community lately, and not just at auctions. “At toys shows and antique shows we’ve noticed a level of interest that hasn’t been seen for a number of years. The results of our three-day auction only served to confirm it. At this sale we saw a spike in new bidders through the Internet, absentee and in the gallery. A new wave of collectors is definitely entering the antique toy hobby, and they’ve relit the fire. Forget about kindling; they’re throwing on entire logs, and it’s benefiting everyone involved,” Rich said. “We’re proud of all of our sales, but this one was special,” said Bertoia Auctions owner Jeanne Bertoia, confirming the $2.75 million total for her company’s Nov. 8 to 10 “Christmas Wishes” auction. “We had a wonderful turnout, and interest was very strong across the board because of the important collections being auctioned. The top ten included boats, automotive, comic character, a figural doorstop, and Christmas antiques. It was truly a sale for every collector.”

SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Poisoning The Well game a bit. The ability to research values online is now within the ability of everyone. Going to any of a number of different websites that specialize in art and antiques is the fastest way to really get a sense of what you might have. Now in saying that, I do realize that Internet reference searches have their own challenges. First is that condi-
tion is very hard for many people to understand. They operate from the assumption that because something is old that condition is not relevant. A quilt that is in tatters, however, does not have the same value as one that is pristine, even if both are 100 years old. Second is the ever-present issue that not every website is accurate. As they
say, garbage in/garbage out! There are many websites out there that are very glitzy in appearance but which have horrible content. You can’t judge a website by its cover. Okay, enough clichés, but the point is that there are many good sites out there that provide useful information. So the next time that you are thinking about selling
something, do your homework. Spend a little time before you call in buyers to figure out exactly what you have. Then if someone comes to your door and tries to buy ‘Don Quixote” for a few thousand dollars while telling you that your book club editions are worth millions, you can keep the poison out of the well.

During a recent holiday weekend, I was watching one of my favorite movies on the subject of antiques. The movie is the 1999 flick “The Ninth Gate” with Johnny Depp and directed by Roman Polanski. The movie is a morality play of sorts about greed and the world of antiques (in this case, books). The movie opens with rare book dealer Dean Corso (played by Depp) going on a house call to look at a collection of books that he wants to buy. An unscrupulous dealer, he pulls two particularly nasty stunts. First, he overvalues the books he does not want, thereby “poisoning the
well” for those dealers who might come after. Second, he undervalues the one real rarity in the collection and succeeds in purchasing it for very little money. The slovenly heirs (who are busy drinking very early in the day) are thrilled to get cash and so sell the rarity while preparing for the next book dealer, as they now know the collection is worth a fortune (when the opposite, rather, is the truth). I remember the first time that I heard about poisoning the well, or the trick of buying the “cherries” from a collection and then inflating the values on the remainder so that future dealers cannot buy from the house. My old, and now departed, friend Johnny Neidinger told me of a toy dealer who was notorious for doing this. He would take the best and overvalue the rest. Today, while I suspect this practice does continue, the Internet has changed the

of cels and drawings for The Beatles’ 1968 “Yellow Submarine animated film was led by a color model cel featuring Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon. Used for ink and paint and animator reference, handpainted color model cels are crucial to the overall style of an animated film, which helps explain the work’s $14,340 auction price. A second important collection in the auction included original works from the very first time characters from Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts comic strip were featured in animation. A Charlie Brown/Peanuts production cel for a 1961 Ford Falcon commercial sold for a strong $12,547. A group of three related cels from the commercial, the first time Charlie Brown’s dog Snoopy did his “Happy Dance for animation, sold for $11,950. A picture-perfect character size comparison pan model cel of nearly every Peanuts character to appear in an animated film also sold for $11,950. For additional information, visit www.HA.com.

We look forward to many more successful years to come hosting the Pier Antique Show! The Pier Antique Show featured nearly 500 exhibitors of quality antique furniture, decorative and fine arts. This includes eclectic items from the 18th century through the 1980s, such as manual typewriters, kitchen and home dÊcor, antique jewelry, art glass, and more. The very popular fashion alley, showcasing vintage clothing, jewelry, and handbags, also reoccurred at the show. A rare three-shell carved Lancaster County, Pa., Chippendale highboy, circa 1780 to 1790, with restoration and estimated at $10,000 to $15,000, sold to a local collector bidding in the room for $8,500.
realized $1,600. Also of note in art was a portrait painting by the artist John Henry Byrd (1805-1884). Emigrating from Ireland to Arkansas, he became the state’s most prolific antebellum artist, painting many of the prominent families and people of the day. Estimated at $200 to $400, the painting sold to a great-granddaughter of the artist for $1,500. Sunday’s auction concluded with clocks and lighting. Seven tall case clocks were offered, with all selling at or above estimate. The top lot of the sale was a profusely carved 19thcentury Tiffany & Co. nine tube tall case that sold just under low estimate at $17,000. Highlights among lighting included a large Middle Eastern table lamp ($700), a Victorian brass piano lamp ($600), and a Sevres ormolu and porcelain clock garniture ($700). U.S. Antique Shows, a division of GLM, the world’s leading producer of indoor antique shows, recently reported a 28 percent increase in attendance at the Pier show when compared to the highest attendance recorded in the past five years. This year’s Pier Antique Show at Pier 94 was held on Nov. 23 and 24. “For more than 30 years, the Pier Antique Show has been a highly anticipated event for New York City and the tristate area, noted Dan Darby, GLM vice president and U.S. Antique Shows group show director. “In our first year producing the Pier Antique Show, we exceeded our most ambitious attendance goals, continued Darby. “To have our show so well received by antique and vintage merchandise enthusiasts, with crowds flowing out the door, is very exciting for not only for the

Known for his works of kittens and other animals, the painting portrayed a poodle holding a holly decorated basket of kittens and was aptly entitled “Holiday Gift. Bidding opened online within estimate at $1,600 and quickly escalated between multiple phone bidders before coming down to a single phone bidder and a bidder in the room, both determined to take this particular present home for the holidays. The room was silent as bidding climbed to $10,000, then $15,000, before the floor bidder came away the winner at $16,000 to a well-deserved round of applause. Cordier Auctions also offered artwork by Boris Blai (American, 1893-1985), noted sculptor and founder of the Stella Elkins Tyler School of Art (a campus of Temple University) in 1935. The artwork included wood sculptures, including a female nude torso ($2,300) and a portrait of Mrs. Lessing Rosenwald ($1,200). Also offered were paintings by Franklin C. Watkins (American, 1894-1972) including a portrait of opera singer Miriam Gurewitz, first wife of Blai, submitted to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts 121st Annual Exhibition, which

AUCTION SALE BILLS

Stephenson’s Jan. 1 And 2 New Year’s Auction Of fers Silver, Fine Jewelry, And Art Fr om East Coast Estates Stephenson’s most anticipated auction of the year is their big New Year’s event held at the company’s suburban Philadelphia gallery in Southampton, Pa. Traditionally, their first auction of the year, which in 2014 will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 1 and 2, is known not only for its premier estate antiques and art, but also for the unexpected treasures set aside throughout the year for inclusion in the New Year’s sale. This nearly 700-lot auction is a sale whose level of quality is consistent throughout. The Wednesday session of decorative art and “smalls” contains an exceptional collection of 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century Wedgwood from the estate of Edgar
creamware, and Lalique. More than 70 lots of choice Indo-Persian silver, from a single-owner collection, are entered in the opening session. Leading the gleaming array is an elegant five-piece, .900-silver tea and coffee service decorated in heavy repousse style. Another top lot is a .900-silver centerpiece with liner signed “M. Tariliyan.” The Wednesday session also includes English and Chinese export silver. If Santa wasn’t as generous as he should have been this Christmas, there will be many opportunities for gift givers to make amends, starting with a superb 1920s platinum jabot pin resplendent with

“Ned” Simmons Jr. of Philadelphia. Most of the 50 pieces to be auctioned are Jasper dip, meaning they were created using a technique in which solid white forms are dipped into colored clay to impart particular colors or combinations of colors. “We sold a portion of the Simmons estate a few years ago. The Jasperware was retained and stored at the Churchville, Pa., home of Mr. Simmons’ parents, who are now deceased,” explained Stephenson’s owner, Cindy Stephenson. “It’s a very nice collection that includes some Jasper tri-color, some beautiful mini medallions and other Wedgwood.” Also from the Simmons estate comes selections of drabware,
cabochon emeralds, pink sapphires, oval blue sapphires, and 17 mine-cut diamonds. The brooch is expected to realize $4,000$6,000. A gold pocket watch
and many other pieces of fine jewelry, some of them late entries, will cross the auction block as well. A Manhattan, N.Y., estate was the source for some of the jewelry, furniture, and art in the sale. It also produced a special luxury highlight for the ladies, several coveted Judith Leiber purses (rhinestone,
A Philadelphia man who decided to deaccession some of the paintings in his vast collection selected several prized works for inclusion in this auction, knowing that the sale is a perennial drawcard for art buyers in the tristate area. The Jan. 2 session will present a strong selection of art, crossing many genres. There are two Edmund Coates (American, 18161871) Hudson River School pastorals that came from a Princeton, N.J., estate. One of the paintings depicts ice skaters, the other is a landscape of the Lower Hudson River Valley showing farmers cutting wheat in a field.
Native American with a patterned blanket in earth tones. “Couse is a significant Taos school artist,” said Stephenson. “He was a founding member and first president of the Taos Society of Artists, and his work is highly sought after.” The art section also includes five John Lear paintings, a Paul Gorka oilon-canvas surrealist landscape, and a David True mixed-media abstract. Of all the furnishings, the pieces that have drawn the most attention during the run-up to the sale have been the paint-decorated chestsof-drawers by Julia Gray Ltd. New York. “Every decorator who has walked into the gallery has gravitated to the pair immediately,” said Stephenson. “They’re from the 1960s or 1970s and have that stylish Hamptons look, with faux-marble tops and fancy paintwork.” Another highlight from the aforementioned Princeton estate is a Handel

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century “Vive Le Cocktail!”: The Birth Of An American Tradition incorrect Girl Watchers’ Drink Guide, awash in wolfish advice (“The hobby of girl-watching is best pursued with an expertly mixed drink in hand”). The concept of the mixed drink had, however, been around long before any of these on-screen incarnations, and the stories surrounding its creation are numerous. The most drama-filled has the cocktail making its debut in Revolutionary War days. The upper crust of American and French military men patronized a Yorktown, N.Y., tavern operated by Betsy Flanagan. For the Americans, the drink of choice at Flanagan’s was gin or whiskey; for the French, wine or vermouth. When the

“Old Mr. Boston is a rare and versatile gentleman, everlastingly young, and ever ready to accept the difficult role of host. Follow the advice of this joyful and genial friend, and there will be many pleasant times in store for you.” - Old Mr. Boston Official Bartender’s Guide, 1935
time came for a toast, the liquors were often combined with joyous abandon. Perhaps filled with liquid courage, one enterprising officer absconded with a rooster belonging to a nearby farmer still loyal to the Crown. The ever-practical Betsy cooked up the rooster for her guests, putting its colorful tail feathers to good use adorning their mixed drinks. The toast for the evening: “Vive le cock-tail!” A beverage legend was born. Often, the names of cocktail combos are more interesting than the drinks themselves. They range from the seemingly-innocuous (“The Sweet Patootie,” “The Fairy Bell”), to the high-hat (“The Vanderbilt,” “The Fox Trot”). There are the slightly risqué (“The Soul Kiss,” “The Widow’s Dream”), and even the potentially lethal (“The Rattlesnake,” “The Knock-Out,” and “The Third Rail”). The hallmark of the cocktail, however, remains constant: combining the unlikely with the unusual to create the “un-putJames Bond had it all wrong, Muddled or mixed? Fred and Ginger sailed across the dance floor. By the swinging ‘60s, the cocktail had assumed its still-current aura of James Bond-ish cool. Bar guides proliferated, each with its own can’t-miss mixture of drink recipes and helpful hints (“Never mix by the ‘eyeball’ method - not even with highballs!”). For the Rat Pack crowd of yore (and the Mad Men crowd of today), As any wise bartender there was even a politicallywill tell you, a bar glass is just a bar glass, no matter how elegant. It’s what’s inside it that counts. While the midtwentieth century gave birth to plenty of sophisticated barware, those decades also gave birth to plenty of sophisticated beverages. Among them: multiple and increasingly complex variations on that mainstay of retro moviedom, the “cocktail.” For the daring flappers of silent film days, a garter-held flask of bootleg “hootch” made the ‘20s roar. Garth’s Kicks Off 2014 With Two-Day Americana Auction On Friday And Saturday, Jan. 3 and 4
This upholstered arm chair, New York, late 17th- or early 18th-century, Ex. Abraham and May (Massachusetts), was purchased at a Hudson Valley farm sale in the 1940s. in the 1760s, and eventually it was completed in 1790 by Berriah Holcomb, a Revolutionary War veteran. Due to the Meisberger’s proximity to Hancock and New Lebanon Shaker villages, Ray and Mary Ann’s interests leaned toward f i n e S h a k e r A fine wooden pieces. The core of their collection is with the Meisbergers focused on the 18th century that, “It was clear immediately that Ray really knew and covers a wide array of his collection and understood Americana. Highlights of the furniture it with a sense of humility that was beyond admirable. His passion was noticeable throughout the conversation, and it became quite clear that his and Mary Ann’s collection reflected their fine taste and studious nature. It has been our pleasure to get to lots from various consignors. The Meisberger collection reflects a wide range of Americana items. From Shaker to spatterware, treenware to pottery, and painted furniture to gameboards, this sale is sure to quickly heat up competition in a room full of bidders on a cold winter’s day. Garth’s CEO Jeff Jeffers noted during pre-auction discussions
being offered include a rare and important New York great armchair with some of its original leather upholstery, made around 1700. The chair is ex. Abraham and May (Massachusetts) and was purchased by the Meisbergers at a Hudson Valley farm sale in the 1940s. Of French design and in the Louis XIII taste, this chair was likely produced by an immigrant French Huguenot craftsman in New York’s Hudson River Valley (estimate $4,000-$8,000). An 18th-century one-piece decorated cupboard, attributed to Deerfield, Mass., with a ninepane door over a double-paneled door, and old blue and white paint carries an estimate of $3,000-$6,000. A very nice Massachusetts Queen Anne drop leaf table is estimated at $1,500-$2,500, and an early 19th-century footstool from Lancaster County, Pa., should sell for $1,200-$1,800. Additional decorative arts from the Meisburger collection include a New England Shaker storage box with its original red wash (expected to sell for $400-$800). A burl bowl with good figure and interior patina has an estimate of $900-$1,200, and a chandelier found in Hudson, N.Y., has an estimate of $800-$1,600. An important collection of sketches of Shaker objects by June Sprigg (Massachusetts, b. 1953), which most importantly includes a copy of Henry Blinn’s plan of Canterbury Shaker Village in 1848, is estimated at $1,000$2,000.
A yellow spatterware thistle pattern soup bowl, estimate: $2,500-$4,500.
Mr. Meisburger had an affinity for pottery as well. Several fine pieces will cross the block, including several 18th-century New York pieces by Commeraw and Crolius. A highlight will certainly include a stoneware
pottery. A five-gallon stoneware crock with a brushed cobalt standing lion and impressed with a mark for Hubble and Chesebro, Geddes, N.Y., is expected to fetch between $15,000$20,000. Toward the end of the Saturday session, a sewer-tile dog, probably Ohio, has an estimate of $750-$1,000. Of course, the selection of trade signs offered at Garth’s should never be missed, and this sale is no exception. A folksy Live Bait trade sign, found in the Susquehanna River Valley along the New YorkPennsylvania border, is made of wood with applied sheet metal, and states “WORMS.” With the nice weathered surface, this sign is expected to sell for $200-$400. Also, an oil on canvas rendering of “Female Nude With Three Attendants,” attributed to William Etty (1787-1849), shows a young nude female beauty standing with her back to the viewer, admiring herself in a mirror held by an attendant. Rare Early Biblical Manuscripts Return To View At Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery from the fourth to fifth centuries. The scriptures of Deuteronomy and Joshua are substantially complete texts from the Old Testament and date from the same period. Painted wooden covers, designed to protect the Gospels and decorated with representations of the four Evangelists, will also be on view. Freer purchased the manuscripts in 1906 in Giza, Egypt, and later organized and underwrote significant early biblical scholarship. While researching their cultural context and physical structure, it was discovered that the Washington Codex contains a passage not found in any other biblical text, a segment at the end of the Gospel of Mark known as the Freer logion (a logion is a saying attributed to Jesus), which will be viewable during the exhibition. Freer was mainly interested in aesthetic beauty and harmonies among the various objects in his collection, regardless of type or origin. In November 1912, he opened his Detroit home to the public and used Whistler’s Peacock Room as a display space to curate his acquisitions, filling the shelves with pottery from the Middle East and Asia, as wellas tables of Buddhist
sculpture and glass cases containing the Washington Codex and Old Testament manuscripts. Having recently promised his collection to the Smithsonian, the room became a beautiful laboratory where Freer could bring seemingly disparate objects into a visual conversation. “When Freer chose to exhibit his rare biblical manuscripts in the Peacock Room, he was demonstrating his belief in cross-cultural correspondence,” said Lee Glazer, curator of American art at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. “Juxtaposing these sacred texts with ceramics and aesthetic decoration underscored Freer’s belief that ‘all works of art go together.’” Due to their extreme fragility and sensitivity to light, the manuscripts are rarely exhibited, last appearing as highlights of the Sackler’s landmark exhibition in 2006, “In the Beginning: Bibles Before the Year 1000.” For this reason, the opening of the Peacock Room shutters on the third Thursday of each month will be suspended while the Bibles are on view, resuming on Feb. 20, 2014. More than 100 years after they were first on view to the public in museum founder Charles Lang Freer’s Detroit home, two rare antique biblical manuscripts have returned to be viewed at the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The Washington Codex, one of the oldest manuscripts of the Four Gospels in the world, as well as an ancient parchment volume of Deuteronomy and Joshua, will be on view through Feb. 16, 2014, in the unexpected setting of James McNeill Whistler’s blue-and-gold Peacock Room. The Freer Gallery of Art, located at 12th Street and Independence Avenue S.W., and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, located at 1050 Independence Avenue S.W., together house the nation’s collection of Asian art on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except Dec. 25, and admission is free. The galleries are located near the Smithsonian Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange lines. The Washington Codex, also known as the Codex Washingtonensis or Freer Gospels, is the third-oldest parchment manuscript of the Gospels in the world, dating
