Auction days one and two were filled with rare toys and banks from other prestigious collections, while day three was allocated exclusively to the Downey consignment, which dazzled collectors with its abundance of German-made Marklin rarities. The top lot of the sale, a Marklin Battleship La Plata, was reportedly one of Sam Downey’s most treasured nautical toys. The scarce and desirable 12-inch-long trolley was bid beyond its high estimate and picked up a new owner for $21,600. Christmas antiques put in a stellar performance, and it wasn’t just because of the fast-approaching holiday season. “To Christmas collectors, buying is a year-round pursuit,” said Bertoia. “The Christmas category is stronger than ever, and just when some may think they’ve seen the height of the market, it’s off to new levels. In this sale, many lots brought two, three, even four times the high estimate.” The object of many bidders’ attention was a delightful 22-inch-long Santa on a glass-eyed polar bear growler toy. Wearing a leather harness and mounted on metal wheels, the bear was designed so its head could be pushed to activate the growler mechanism. Cataloged with an estimate of $3,000-$4,000, the amusing holiday duo ignited a bidding war in the room and

Another top performer was a nodding-head papiermache and composition Santa on a wheeled platform. Carrying a lantern and walking stick, the figure was dressed in a green robe, “unusual,” Bertoia noted, because any that have appeared in previous Bertoia sales have worn blue robes. Collector Anecdotes And Antics A “Timely” Auction That Puts Marvel Comics Over The Top

properties. You cannot go a month without hearing about a new superhero movie that is launching at the box office soon. This has ignited demand for these vintage treasures and has even caused a boom to modern era comic books. This all begs the question as to whether or not a lot of these vintage superhero comic books should be looked at as serious financial investments. To answer that question, collectors need to understand that once the current craze for the latest superhero movie subsidizes, prices will and have fallen on a lot of these treasures. The new owner of this Marvel Comics #1 doesn’t have to worry though, as he or she is playing in the top 1 percent of the entire vintage comic book market. Sadly, that hasn’t stopped some speculators and collectors from thinking that key comic books from the 1970s and later are going to

invest in these items, they are entering a market where the average investment grade vintage comic book is going to cost $1,000 or more, and the odds of that comic continually increasing in price are working against the investor, not for them. In conclusion, if you can afford to pay over $1 million for a first issue copy of Marvel Comics, it will be great investment long-term. Unfortunately, too many speculators are eyeing up this sale thinking that because the top 1 percent of the market is achieving astronomical gains, it means the rest of the market is following, and I can assure you, that is rarely the case. However, if you do have that copy of Marvel Comics #1 in your collection, consider yourself extremely lucky!

going as far to buy and collect graded comic books, but then promptly open them from their enclosures, thus invalidating both the third-party grading and the corresponding grade. Other, less sophisticated collectors see it as a cash grab that potentially turns comic books into nothing more than a commodity speculators and investors can then fight over at high-profile auctions. However, judging by how quickly collectors have flocked to third-party grading comic books, grading is the new standard, has brought a ton of new interest to these books, and changed the game. The second catalyst that is causing vintage comic book prices to rise exponentially over the past few years is the excellent handling from both Marvel, which is owned by Disney, and DC Comics, who have both commissioned a continuous stream of movies based on these iconic
R053281
On Nov. 21, Heritage Auctions sold the highest graded copy of Marvel Comics #1 in existence. The copy was graded by CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) and exhibited off-white page quality. The book sold for $1.26 million when you factor in the auction buyer’s premium. The issue is considered one of the most historic golden age comic books published by Timely Comics and dated from November 1939. This book features the first ever appearances of the Human Torch, Ka-Zar, Angel, and the first newsstand appearance of the SubMariner. It is also considered to be the first book that ushered in the Marvel Comics era of which new superheroes would be introduced regularly, with new stories being created for each new character. The auctioned copy came from the coveted Windy City Pedigree collection that is well known for being a source of highgrade key comic books from the early years. Comic book collecting has heated up over the past few decades due to two market catalysts that are causing collectors to consider some of these books to be great long-term financial

investments. The first catalyst that helped propel the comic book collecting market to what it is today came in the year 2001. It was that year that CGC, also known as Comic Guaranty Corporation, first premiered on the scene. CGC is a reputable third-party grading company that pioneered a way to grade and authenticate comic books and then encase them in a hard plastic enclosure to ensure they are archivally preserved. The company garnished a large fan following when they premiered on the scene because it is owned and operated by the Certified Collectibles Group out of Sarasota, Fla. This is the same company behind NGC, the well-known and highly respected third-party grading firm that grades and encapsulates coins. Today, there is more than one third-party grading company for comic books, but CGC is still one of the market leaders. Ironically, not all collectors like the idea of third-party grading. This is especially true in collecting arenas where it is seen as a hindrance to the function of the item being graded. For instance, unlike coins, a comic book was meant to be read and enjoyed. When it is encased and sealed in plastic, this is not possible. This is something that a lot of collectors have been split on, with some high profile collectors
continue to soar to new heights at auction. Ironically, a lot of these once popular books that are considered to be key issues are stabilizing or falling on the secondary market because, unlike the Marvel Comics #1 example, there are thousands of high-grade examples, and some buyers have quietly cashed out of their holdings and left the market en masse. Another thing would-be investors need to understand before entering this market is just how many kids born today or in the last few years are even going to identify with comic books. Most newsstands no longer offer the latest comic books, and comic book stores that were once a thing in the 1990s and early 2000s have started to dry up due to economic issues and fewer buyers. The last great speculative craze to fuel the comic collecting market occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the market suffered a quick death at the hands of billion dollar companies who only cared about short-term profit. Today, even if someone wants to try to

New Year, New Decade, New Sale At The Emporium—A Perfect Cure For Early Cabin Fever Year-Round
Traditionally January and February are the coldest months of the year in New Jersey. Last winter, only a few large snow storms hit, but it was cold. So far, temperatures are running five to ten degrees below the normal high. For all the antique and collectible shoppers who have an early dose of cabin fever, the Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium for the month of January will have a storewide sale of 20 percent off items of $20 or more when customers pay with cash or check, five percent less with credit cards
(most dealers are participating). Exceptions to the sale are items that have final sale tags or “firm” written on the price tag. In 1998, the town of Burlington City wanted to enlarge the parking lot by tearing down the large building at 424 High St. Scott Carlbon saved the building from the wrecking ball and created a home for 65 antique and collectible dealers selling items from the early 1800s to the collectibles of today. This building is a massive architectural wonder made of wood beams ten inches wide. According to the
New Jersey State Historical Society, the Emporium was built between 1917 and 1924. When customers see the building for the first time, they always ask, “What was this building used for?” It was used to repair and service automobiles until the late 1970s and is now a fantastic place for an antique co-op. The Christmas courtyard light show will go dark in late January, and for those customers that missed Santa’s visit, he will return next year. The Emporium has also gone back to its regular hours of
11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m. So, set the GPS to 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J., or call 609-747-8333 for directions. Happy Antiquing!

“Papermania Plus showcases the importance of printed material before the internet age,” said show promoter Gary Gipstein. “The breadth and depth of material on display here is staggering. This is where you have a chance to pick up a rare Topps baseball card you’ve been looking for or a backstage pass and poster from that rock concert you attended. between common artistic themes and techniques used by acclaimed American artists Winslow Homer (1836-1910) and Frederic Remington (18611909) through 60 artworks. “Natural Forces” is co-organized and co-curated by a team of four curators, including the DAM’s Thomas Brent Smith, curator of Western American Art and director of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art; Jennifer Henneman, associate curator of western American art; Diana Greenwold, associate curator of American Art at the Portland Museum of Art; and Maggie Adler, curator at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. It will debut at the DAM before traveling to the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. “Natural Forces” will be on view at the DAM from March 15, 2020, to June 7. “The first exhibition of its kind, ‘Natural Forces’ will present visitors with new aspects of the two artists’ oeuvres and stories that contributed to Homer and Remington’s legacies as distinguished figures in American art,” said Christoph Heinrich, Frederick and Jan Mayer Director of the DAM. “We look forward to showcasing an exhibition of Homer and Remington works connected by the time in which they lived, a time of rapid urbanization, industrialization and modernization across America.” Born a generation apart, both artists succeeded in capturing the quintessential American spirit through works of art at the turn of the late-19th and early-20th centuries, an era of growing industrialization and notions of the closing of the American Western frontier. Homer, who was considered the most original painter of his time, prospered by creating masterful depictions of the Eastern Seaboard, while Remington became famous for his iconic representations of the American West. The work of these two largely self-taught artists continues to be celebrated as independent, innovative and homegrown.
“To our knowledge, there is no solid evidence that these two artists ever met, but we believe they had to have known about each other,” said Smith. “We look forward to demonstrating Homer and Remington’s shared artistic experiences and themes that captured the hearts of Americans of the time, elements that contribute to shaping a compelling exhibition narrative.” Organized thematically and chronologically in five sections, “Natural Forces” will begin with an introduction of iconic artworks that represent the arc of

Miller & Miller’s Holds Excellent Advertising And Historic Objects Auction In Ontario A 1907 Leather Motorcycle License Plate Brings Over $10,000 A leather motorcycle license plate from 1907 sold for $10,620, and an Orange Crush tin litho sign from the 1930s brought $5,959 at an Advertising and Historic Objects Auction held Dec. 7 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.
This all original Coca-Cola school zone sign with a policeman graphic, made in the United States and in excellent condition, with original hardware and good color and gloss, brought $3,540.
online and at the gallery in New Hamburg, Ontario, Canada. Prices quoted are in Canadian dollars. The leather motorcycle plate, extremely rare, measured 6.5-by-4 inches and was listed in the 1910 directory as issued to Walter H. Gurd, 185 Dundas Street in London, Ontario. The Orange Crush single-sided lithographed tin sign, a recent find, was 59-by-35 inches. It was marked “C-12N – St. Thomas Metal Signs Ltd., St. Thomas, Ont” on the lower center edge.
This Butler Dawes Brewery black horse statue, 18 inches tall, plaster cast in the 1930s by famed Woodstock, Ontario, sculptor Ross Butler (1907-95), sold for $3,540.
“Two days before the sale, we were contacted by a construction firm that had uncovered a layer of early tin CocaCola and Orange Crush signs behind the wall of a building that was slotted for demolition,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Among those signs was the Orange Crush. The energy in the room was already electric, but then it was totally bolstered.” The auction featured the collection of John McKenty, the Canadian historian and author whose collection tells the story of the rise and fall of the Canada Cycle & Motor Company of Canada. McKenty gave a special presentation the Friday evening before the auction.
