superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy and grandnephew of Benjamin Franklin, soared to $35,965.80. In the age before computers and copiers, persons who conducted extensive business and personal correspondence needed to keep manuscript copies of the letters they sent so they could be referenced at a later date. The best way to do this was to hand copy the letters into a blank book as they were written. The letter copy book sold was kept by Williams while serving as a commercial agent for the United States Navy in France, during the American Revolution. The copies of the letters contained in the book dated from January of 1780 to February of 1785. The Continued on page 6

Dee Dee Sides, promoter of the Armory Show NYC Big Flea, has filled the Lexington Avenue Armory at 23rd Street with over 200 dealers for the Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21 and 22, antiques show. It is the first in several years at the popular downtown site. Many dealers were anxious to return to New York City, so Sides contracted for the Armory during New York’s popular Antiques Week, and they quickly signed on for the show. “The show’s easy access for the customers by public transportation, cab or car; good foot traffic; a great neighborhood; and a site with a history for antiques shows in the heart of the greatest city makes this a very popular site for antiques,” said Sides. Details are now finalized for the 200-plus dealers committed to the two-day event, including Bob Withington of York, Maine; New Yorker Marian Stikas; Michael Whittemore, Punta Gorda, Fla.; and Scott Estepp of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mario Pollo, Holliston, Mass., will be exhibiting with his collection of early Americana and folk art. Of special interest is a pair of portraits he recently acquired that once hung in New York City’s Mayoral home, Gracie Mansion. The works are of two little girls, Jane and Esther Wheaton, painted in Hartford, Conn., in 1837, who moved into Gracie Mansion in 1857. Linda Gumb, London, U.K.,

An Omaha Beach D-Day Flag that was flown on an LCT Landing Craft emerged from Heritage Auctions’ $1.1 million Arms and Armor, Civil War and Militaria auction as the top lot on Dec. 11. The flag, with 48 stars and frayed edges, realized $45,000. It was one of a trio of flags that brought the three highest realized prices. In the runner-up position was a Confederate Second National Flag known as “The Stainless Banner,” that was captured Feb. 16, 1865, at Battery Bee in Charleston (S.C.) Harbor. This completely hand-stitched flag, which after years of fraying has been reduced from its original 96inch length to about 92.5, was coveted by many bidders, driving the price to $40,000. A wool World War II Royal Navy Ensign that was flown from the British Landing Ship S.S. Empire Crossbow at Gold Beach on D-Day (June 6, 1944), along with an engraved brass plaque detailing the flag and its background, brought $27,500. The auction’s most coveted items included a collection of weapons, a group that was led by a Henry Lever Action rifle. The .44 rimfire-caliber weapon, with its octagonal barrel, smooth walnut stock, fixed front sight and adjustable rear ladder sight, realized $25,000. A 12-gauge Cased & Engraved J. Purdey & Sons Double-Barrel shotgun pulled in $16,250, while a

the most reliable source possible. That way, if there is a problem with the item in question, you are sure to get the technical support you need to get the machine back in working order. Some of the most popular pinball machines in existence were made by companies like Williams who no longer manufacture pinball machines. Most of the classic titles of yesteryear like Pinbot, Bride of Pinbot, Haunted House, Fun House, Cyclone, Medieval Madness, and High Speed can be costly depending on condition and originality. It is no longer uncommon to see near mint examples of some of these machines selling for close to $10,000 and beyond, but enthusiasts can expect to spend about $4,000 on a near mint example of a popular game complete with a much-needed

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Vintage Pinball Machines Are A Costly Affair By Shawn Surmick Space Port was an incredible video game arcade situated on the first floor of the King of Prussia Plaza Mall directly across from my favorite, now defunct video game retailer, Electronics Boutique. The King of Prussia Mall has become one of the largest shopping destinations on the East Coast and is located in beautiful Montgomery County, Pa., approximately 30 minutes from Philadelphia. Growing up, my parents took me to the King of Prussia Mall at least twice a month. And whenever I visited Space Port, my favorite pinball game was always Pinbot. Pinbot was manufactured by the infamous amusement game manufacturer Williams, and it was released in 1986. I have fond memories of playing this incredible robotic spacethemed pinball game throughout my childhood and beyond. It is those memories that helped foster my current love affair with all things coin-operated, especially pinball. Unfortunatelylocal video arcades are almost a thing of the past, and, sadly, Space Port closed more than a decade ago. Thanks in part to the rise in powerful home video game systems, arcade operators could

no longer afford to pay thousands of dollars for the newest state-of-the-art machines when most video game enthusiasts could play more powerful electronic games from the comfort of their own homes. Even standuvideo arcade games that once populated video arcades of the late 20th century have a hard time selling on today’s secondary market unless they are deeply discounted or are a popular title from yesteryear. This is due to the fact that today’s high powered computers, smart phones, and home video game consoles can easily replicate most arcade games of the past at a fraction of the size and cost of the full-fledged original. This is one reason why I never advocate investing in and collecting full-sized video arcade games. The space required to store and display these relics of the past can be better utilized, and the cost to maintain these games is much too great for anyone but the most experienced enthusiast. Collectors of most of these relics will never see a return on their investment when choosing to sell in an often suppressed and unforgiving secondary market populated by knowledgeable resellers and misguided enthusiasts drunk on nostalgia. Luckily, there is one exception to this rule. To this day, fullsized pinball games cannot be successfully emulated on home video game systems or computers. The experience is just not

the same. As a result, the market for vintage pinball games has been rising exponentially for the past several years. Meanwhile, very few pinball machine manufacturers still exist and make modern era games. This has caused the market for vintage pinball games to grow, with most games from the 1980s and ’90s selling for significant premiums from that of just a few years ago, and it shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, some of the most popular machines from yesteryear are delivering double digit returns year after year. Due to the metamorphic rise of the secondary market demand for vintage pinball machines, some experienced enthusiasts have started home businesses catering to the full restoration and repair of these games. A lot of these businesses are readily advertised on the internet and were started by hobbyists who have the necessary knowledge to repair and restore these machines, which is no easy task. This, in turn, has caused the available supply of good quality games in good condition to become sparse. It is this lack of supply that is driving current prices of various wellknown classic pinball games higher and higher. It is also at this level of the market where well-to-do speculators have started to spend large amounts of money to acquire some of these games and, in some

cases, attempt to remove them from the market to manipulate prices even higher. Do a simple internet search for “pinball investing,” and you are sure to get some links to various online collecting forums, specialty sites, and articles about speculation and the health of the secondary market. Investment sites even exist for those lucky enough to be able to afford investing in machines that cost upwards to five figures. It is important to note that most of the popular investment quality pinball machines reside in the 1980s and ’90s. This is counter to the overall collecting philosophy that preaches older is usually better. The reason for this is simply due to the way the games were made. Electronic pinball games (often called solid state machines) from the 1980s and ’90s are much easier to maintain and fix than games made in the 1970s and earlier. That being said, easier is a relative term in this instance, as repairing and restoring any kind of pinball machine is a costly and time-consuming venture. This is why collecting pinball machines is not for the beginning enthusiast, and it most definitely should not be your primary collecting hobby if you have no experience in the upkeep and maintenance of these machines. A good condition working pinball game that is in demand in the marketplace will easily start at about $2,000 and go up from there. Yes, you can get one cheaper in certain instances, but most of those games will need some form of restoration and repair. It is best to buy the well-conditioned and working game you can find from

warranty from a reliable seller. Relative demand is now starting to eclipse available supply at a fast pace. As a result, readily available supply continues to shrink year after year as middle aged men who once grew up with these machines attempt to accent their collecting rooms with some of the most popular games of yesteryear. Sadly, if you are reading this article and just starting to think about buying a popular pinball machine from yesteryear, the time to act has passed. Prices have already started to rise at a rate even Wall Street would envy. In an upcoming article, I will examine how best to buy a vintage pinball machine and how to avoid making costly mistakes. Until that time, it may be best to find a place that still has a pinball machine you can play for mere pocket change!

The show has always had a variety of antiques with

condition of the book, missing its covers and spine, contained an array of historical content within its pages. The recipients of the copied letters included a who’s who of early American history, including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Morris, and others. While much of the content related to business, various letters were much more personal in content and gave a window into the thoughts and events that were then happening in the world and in America at that time. Additional historical items that crossed the block were an autographed document signed by founding father Benjamin Franklin, an autographed document fragment by noted scientist and mathematician Isaac Newton, an 1846 travelling map of Texas/Oregon/California, and numerous 19th and early 20th century presidential campaign items, among other historical ephemera. The Benjamin Franklin autographed document realized $8,061.30. The vellum document, a land indenture signed by Franklin on Feb. 2, 1763, while serving as a Justice of the Peace for Philadelphia, showed its 253-year age. However, Franklin’s signature was strong and bold at the bottom of the document. The rare autograph of Sir Isaac Newton sold for $8,540. Newton, a famed 17th/early

18th century English physicist and mathematician, is remembered by many for the legendary apple falling from the tree onto Newton’s head story. While likely embellished and changed over time, Newton’s contribution to mathematics, the sciences, and the understanding of the world cannot be underestimated. The document fragment was part of a donation register signed by several other notables. The fragment’s provenance included a sales receipt from Goodspeed’s Bookshop in Boston dated 1963. The folding map titled “A New Map of Texas Oregon and California with the Regions Adjoining that was published in Philadelphia in 1846 realized $1,586. Maps of this type were used by many as they travelled West in search of riches in the gold fields of California. Alderfer Auctioneers and Appraisers will conduct their next Fine and Decorative Arts Auction on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, with a section of significant historical ephemera being offered, including Civil War diaries and other important documents. CW Museum Selected As Featured Loan Exhibition At Winter Antiques Show Folk Art Museum Will Celebrate Its 60th Anniversary In 2017 The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum (AARFAM), one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, will commemorate its diamond anniversary in 2017. It will launch its celebratory year in New York City as the special loan exhibition at the Winter Antiques Show to be held at the Park Avenue Armory in January. “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Revolution and Evolution” will offer a selection of some of the finest pieces in the museum’s collection, including ceramics, sculpture, drawings, paintings, fraktur, furniture, weathervanes, utilitarian objects, needlework, quilts, toys and more. The exhibition will honor Mrs. Rockefeller as one of the early female collectors of folk art and whose collection is the nucleus of the museum’s American folk art collection. It will also salute her vision, which continues today to guide the evolving AARFAM—the oldest, continuously operating institution in the United States dedicated solely to the collection, exhibition and preservation of American folk art—and to inspire its continued collecting and acquisitions process. The Winter Antiques Show celebrates its 63rd year as America’s leading art, antiques and design fair, featuring over 70 renowned experts in fine and decorative arts from around the world. The Winter Antiques Show’s 2017 loan exhibition is sponsored by Bessemer Trust. It is also noteworthy that the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, which operates the AARFAM, is the only cultural institution to be invited to present the loan exhibition at the Winter Antique Show twice in the past 25 years. “The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is deeply honored to participate in the Winter Antiques Show for the second time since 2001,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation and museums. “It is fitting that the nation’s finest collection of American folk art will celebrate its 60th anniversary at the critically acclaimed Winter Antiques Show in the city where Mrs. Rockefeller’s remarkable philanthropy remains in evidence today.” Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (1874-1948), wife of John D. Rockefeller Jr. (1874-1960), was an avid art collector. While European and Oriental art were among Mrs. Rockefeller’s early collecting interests, American works came to

She enjoyed discovering and patronizing unrecognized contemporary artists and was a founder of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Stimulated by visual analogies between modern art and American folk art, she began building a collection of the latter in 1931. Mrs. Rockefeller was advised by a circle of folk art dealers, collectors and scholars, including Edith Gregor Halpert (1900-70), Holger Cahill (1893-1960), Isabel Carleton Wilde (18771951) and the modernist sculptor Elie Nadelman (18821946). Opened in 1957, the AARFAM was built upon a core collection of over 420 objects that Mrs. Rockefeller gave to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Today it is home to more than 7,000 examples of American folk art, including works dating from the 1720s to the present that represent the diverse cultural traditions and geographical regions of the United States. The objects to be seen in “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Revolution and Evolution” are artifacts of 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century material culture; they were made and used by everyday people, and they make strong aesthetic statements, a guiding principle in American folk art appreciation. The exhibition will reflect dynamic periods of collecting that occurred not only for this institution but also for American arts in general: the 1930s, when Mrs. Rockefeller’s collection was amassed; the 1950s, when there was a significant push in the study of American art across the country; the 1970s, when the Bicentennial heightened anew the country’s interest in the revolutionary period and Americana; and the 21st century, in which the geographical regions and time periods

This yellow pine blanket chest decorated by Johannes Spitler is from Shenandoah County, Va., 1795-1807, museum purchase, 1995-94. This salt-glazed stoneware water cooler by Henry Lowndes of Petersburg, Va., 1840-42, was a gift of Colwill-McGehee Antique Decorative and Fine Arts in Honor of Carolyn J. Weekley, 1993.900.1.

“Washington and Lafayette at the Battle of Yorktown” by Reuben Law Reed of Acton, Mass., 1860-80, is an oil-and-gold paint-on-cotton twill canvas and was a gift of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, 1931.101.1. of the AARFAM’s collection expanded. Among the highlights of “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Revolution and Evolution” will be “Baby in Red Chair,” an oil-on-canvas painted in Pennsylvania (1810-30), which Mrs. Rockefeller acquired in 1931, the year she began collecting folk art. The painting was featured in the landmark 1932 exhibition, “American Folk Art: The Art of the Common Man, 1740-1900” that was organized at the Museum of Modern Art, of which all but one object were drawn anonymously from Mrs. Rockefeller’s personal collection. In 1939, Mrs. Rockefeller presented a portion of her folk art collection to Colonial Williamsburg. At the same time, she gave 54 pieces of folk art to the Museum of Modern Art, which later shared the gift with The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Through the cooperation of these two museums and her son David, a number of these works, including the iconic portrait “Baby in Red Chair,” were reunited with the Williamsburg collection in 1956. Another featured object in the exhibition will be a yellow pine blanket chest painted by Johannes Spitler, a furniture decorator working in Shenandoah County, Va., (1795-1807). His colorful

designs on blanket chests, tall case clocks and a cupboard often included cultural as well as naturalistic motifs reflecting his Swiss-German heritage and that of most of his neighbors. This particular chest is decorated with a design that echoes the shape of a tall case clock pediment surrounded by

geometric and cultural motifs. A salt-glazed stoneware water cooler, made by Henry Lowndes (Petersburg, Va., 1840-42) is another highlight of the exhibition. This cooler decorated with a molded patriotic eagle and 13 stars confirms Henry Lowndes as a potter who produced some of the most ambitious and lavishly ornamented stoneware vessels in Virginia before 1850. The molded and applied decorative technique on this cooler evokes Lowndes’s heritage since his father emigrated from Staffordshire, England. “Portrait of Amanda Clayanna Armstrong,” a carved sculpture by Asa Ames (1847), is another object that will be featured in the loan exhibition. Carved in upstate

The “Portrait of Amanda Clayanna Armstrong” by Asa Ames Evans, New York, 1847, is yellow poplar and paint and was a gift of Barbara Rice in memory of her grandfather, Arthur T. White, and her mother, Eleanor Rice, 2009.701.1. New York when his subject was 3 and a half years old, Ames (who was barely 23 years old at the time) showed her wearing what was, most likely, her own, fashionable, late 1840s frock. The familiar costume, Amanda’s relaxed stance, and her outstretched hand provide a degree of spontaneity not seen in more academic likenesses. An exceptional achievement for the carver, the sculpture Continued on page 12

With its dramatic image of McKinley holding an American flag and doffing his top hat while standing atop a large gold dollar coin supported by laborers, military personnel and businessmen, this impressive and beautifully preserved poster was one of the auction’s highlights, selling for $13,929. All prices quoted are inclusive of 15 percent buyer’s premium. Other notable political lots included a rare and vibrant John Bell 1860 presidential campaign flag. The glazed-cotton parade flag with a distinctive pattern of 31 stars in its canton sold for $5,750. The enduring legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, was documented by the organization’s 10th anniversary banquet program signed “Best Wishes Martin Luther King.” A William McKinley’s “Prosperity” color litho poster used in promoting the incum- gala evening attended by 1,400 invited guests, it would bent president for re-election in 1900 sold for $13,929. be the last SCLC annual event ever attended by Dr. King, who

Of the more than 2,000 comics available to bidders, 400 were CGC-graded. AARFAM tradition of fraktur will also be represented in the loan exhibition. One excellent example to be seen is “Exselenc Georg General Waschingdon and Ledy Waschingdon” [sic], attributed to The SusselWashington Artist (Pennsylvania, ca. 1780), a watercolor-and-ink work-onlaid paper. (In keeping with tradition and practice, the unidentified watercolorist was almost certainly a man and most likely a schoolteacher.) Identified by the artist as George and Martha Washington, the subjects’ stiff, frontal stances, colorful cheeks, costume detail and style of execution, however, resemble other examples of the maker’s work, some of which are identified by other inscribed names and some of which remain untitled. A number of these figures grace birth and baptismal certificates, while others appear to have been executed out of sheer love of decorative color and pattern. Purely decorative pieces such as this may have been created as gifts or simply for personal enjoyment. “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Revolution and Evolution” will be curated by Laura Pass Barry, Juli Grainger curator of paintings, drawings, and sculpture; Tara Gleason Chicirda, curator of furniture; and Suzanne Findlen Hood, curator of ceramics and glass. Ms. Barry chairs this committee. The exhibition will be designed by Jeff Daly of Jeff Daly Design, New York.

In addition to the loan exhibition itself, the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg will host a lecture series during the Winter Antiques Show. All lectures will be given at 2 p.m. in the Park Avenue Armory. On Saturday, Jan. 21, Nancy Druckman, folk art expert and president of Nancy Druckman LLC, will present “Pioneer and PreEminent: The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum (and the World of American Folk Art).” On Sunday, Jan. 22, Barry will speak about “Celebrating 60 Years of Collecting at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.” On Monday, Jan. 23, Kimberly Smith Ivey, Colonial Williamsburg’s curator of textiles and historic interiors, will expound on The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum’s Collection of Quilts: “From the Chesapeake to Apple Pie Ridge and Beyond.” On Tuesday, Jan. 24, Hood will present “Collecting American Made: From a Tennessee Face Jug to a New York Coffeepot.” For American folk art aficionados, admirers of 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century material culture created for and by common people, and Americana enthusiasts, there will be no better place for seeing the best of its kind than at “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Revolution and Evolution” at the Winter Antiques Show in January 2017. reminds us of the importance Americans attached to images of children at a time when infant mortality rates were high. “Washington and Lafayette at the Battle of Yorktown,” by Ruben Law Reed (1860-80), an oil-and-gold paint-on-canvas, is another of Mrs. Rockefeller’s works that will take center stage in the exhibit. Ancestors of the artist fought at the battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill, and he was described by his grandson as having “an ardent and life-long interest in historical matters.” This painting shows the American and French generals surveying the land segment of the single most decisive engagement of the American Revolution. The picture is said to accord with a description of the battle given by an eyewitness who later congratulated Reed on the likeness. Beardsley Limner’s “Portrait of Oliver Wight” (Massachusetts, 1786-93) is one of a pair of oils-on-canvas that are considered to be the artist’s strongest and most effective pictures in which he used a series of triangles to structure the compositions. (The other portrait is of Harmony Childe Wight, Oliver’s wife.) This work, to be shown at the Winter Antiques Show, illustrates the artist’s emphasis on his sitter’s features: a carefully painted face, the hair and the modish beaver hat contrast with the sketchy painting of the coat buttons. necklace designed by renowned jeweler Art Smith – discovered on sale at a thrift store for a fraction of its worth. The new season will also present treasures of historic significance, including a map used by pioneer aviator Charles Lindberg, an autographed photograph of U.S. Army General George S. Patton Jr. – likely the last item he signed before his death, and a silver creamer made in 1765 by silversmith and American Revolution patriot Paul Revere. The series’ appraisers are back this season to evaluate an array of collectibles, from the rare to the weird. “Chesapeake Collectibles” appraisers also offer viewers insider tips on collecting in “highlights” segments that include frank advice on how – or how not – to “time” the antiques market. These experts give advice on assessing such elements as the quality of Oriental rugs or how to preserve heirlooms such as great-great-grandmother’s quilt. In addition, MPT crews explore the collections of private and institutional collectors. These feature stories take “Chesapeake Collectibles” on location to the quirky and the

famous. In the season’s first episode, the series explores mind-boggling code-cracking machines at the National Cryptologic Museum, with mysterious names such as Purple Code, Frostburg Supercomputer, and the famous German Enigma. Later in the season, the series uncovers a world of oddities at Hampden’s Bazaar gift shop, tunes in to Jazz legend Eubie Blake’s traveling keyboards, and tours the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower’s collection of iconic blue bottles in downtown Baltimore. “Chesapeake Collectibles” airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on MPT-HD and repeats overnight. Each episode also airs on MPT2 on Saturdays at 7 p.m. The production was shot on location for a third year at the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Md. Major funding for season seven of “Chesapeake Collectibles” was provided by Turf Valley Resort, Alex Cooper Auctioneers Inc. and the generous members of Maryland Public Television. For more information, visit www.chesapeakecollectibles.c om and the series’ Facebook page.

An oil-on-canvas painting by the renowned Hudson School artist Worthington Whittredge (1820-1910), titled “Campers in the Blue Ridge Mountains,” artist-signed lower right, is an expected top lot at Ahlers & Ogletree’s New Year’s Signature Estates Auction, slated for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Jan. 14, 15, and 16, in the firm’s gallery at 715 Miami Circle (Suite 210) in Atlanta, Ga. From a prominent Atlanta private collection, the painting depicts a stream surrounded by dense forest, with a group of figures in the background building a small fire in a bright stream-side clearing. It is a classic Hudson River School painting that captures the essence of American Transcendentalism. Measuring 23-by-34-inches, it’s estimated to bring $40,000-$60,000. Several relevant documents are available that attest to the work’s provenance. These include correspondences regarding the painting’s authenticity (and two that pertain to a 1974 restoration effort) from officials at the Munson-WilliamsProctor Institute (Utica, N.Y.), the High Museum of Art (Atlanta, Ga.), and Berger Art Conservation Inc. (New York, founded in 1967). The painting is housed in a likely original press molded and gilt frame, with vintage plaque affixed to the bottom reading, “Worthington Whittredge Campers in the Blue Ridge Mountains.” Works by Whittredge can be seen in institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Whittredge was born in a log cabin and raised on a farm near Springfield, Ohio. He painted landscapes and portraits as a young man in Cincinnati before traveling to Europe in 1849 to further his artistic studies. Whittredge was enrolled at the Dusseldorf Academy, a major art school of the period

doubled its estimate to sell for $18,750. Two rare plates, uncut and uncolored, made an appearance in the sale. “Passenger Pigeon,” Plate LXII, and “Three-Toed Woodpecker” both illuminate the binding process behind the beloved botanical tome and were purchased by the Saint Louis Mercantile Library. Fourteen of the 16 Audubon prints offered were sold. Botanical prints also held strong interest, including plates from Robert John Thornton’s “Temple of Flora,” 1800-04, all of which sold above their estimates. These were led by “The Blue Egyptian Water-Lily,” 1804, and “The Quadrilateral Passion-Flower,” 1802, each of which sold for $2,860. One show-stopper was an engraved plate from the first edition of Mark Catesby and Georg Ehret’s “Natural History of Carolina,” 1731-43, titled “Magnolia Grandiflora,” depicting the white flower in

dramatic contrast against a black background; it sold for $10,625. In all, 50 of the 58 offered natural and botanical plates and books found buyers. A rare deluxe edition of Thomas Shotter Boys’s “Original Views of London As It Is,” 1842, was also in the sale. Considered the finest lithographed plate book on 19thcentury London, the 26 handcolored vistas helped to change the prevailing opinion that only natural views could be beautiful. This extremely rare edition, in its original state, garnered $21,250. “The sale indicated a confidence in the market for this material, with very solid prices being achieved for lots sold in the middle of the market as well as the high end. Several items sailed past the high estimates, with overall interest from private collectors and the trade alike,” said Kiffer. For more information, visit www.swanngalleries.com.

“Prices are stronger than they have been in years,” said Caleb Kiffer, specialist of Maps and Atlases at Swann Auction Galleries. The Dec. 8 sale of Maps and Atlases, Natural History and Color Plate Books wrapped up the 2016 auction season at Swann with strong numbers, selling 88 percent of the lots offered. The sale grossed $801,332 (including buyer’s premium). Early maps of the East Indies headlined this sale from its inception, and they did not disappoint. One-quarter of the top 20 lots pertained to early European exploration of the region, including “The Spice Map,” a colloquial term for Petrus Placius’s “Insulae Moluccae Celeberrimae,” 1598, which helped to open the area to Dutch traders. It sold to a dealer for $31,200. The highlight of the sale was “The Complete East-India Pilot,” or “Oriental Navigator,” 1797, Robert Laurie and James Whittle’s monumental atlas with 113 engraved charts, called the pinnacle of 18thcentury mapmaking. It sold for $81,250, above a $60,000 high estimate, also going to the trade. Also in the sale was one of the first maps ever published of the area, Claudius Ptolemaus’s “Undecima Asiae Tabula,” circa 1480s, a doublepaged engraved map that set the standard for geographical printing ($6,000). “The East Indies section came primarily from a single collection,” said Kiffer. “It was fun to see them all together, telling the narrative of the spice trade from the perspective of different countries over the span of several hundred years. They were a hot spot in the sale, as were the New York views.” All but one of the 22 offered lots related to early maps and scenes of New York City sold. Two panoramic views of the city each went for well above their estimates one was a first state engraving by Robert Havell Jr., which sold for $10,000, while the second was an 1856 graphite drawing by Frederick William Billing showing recognizable landmarks ($8,750). “The Water Map,” as Egbert Viele’s “Sanitary and Topographical Map of the City and Island of New York” is known, is an 1865 survey of Manhattan still in use today to determine building sites; it was purchased by a collector for $7,250, a record for the work. Ephemera included the 1908-09 wine list from the Hotel Astor, which offered a magnum bottle of 1877 Château Lafite Rothschild for $15; in 2016, the menu fetched $594.
