riginal artworks by noted artists, as well as brilliant estate jewelry items offered on behalf of the New York County Public Administrator, will coheadline an auction slated for Sunday, Jan. 11, by Philip Weiss Auctions. The sale will be held in the firm’s gallery located at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. Hundreds of fresh-to-the-market lots will be offered starting at 10 a.m. (EST). The artwork will be led by a mixed media on paper by Cy Twombly (1928-2011), whose spare, childlike scribbles left him out of step with the movements of post-war American art, even as he became one of the era’s most important painters. Also featured will be two works (a watercolorand-ink and an oil-on-board) by Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978), the noted Greek-born pre-Surrealist painter. Also sold will be a pencilsigned woodblock titled “Aspen Red River” by Gustave Baumann (1881-1971), the German-born

and prooflike surfaces of this coin make it a leading contender for the most desirable specimen of the Partrick 1792 pattern set,” said Rohan. “The overall appearance of this carefully preserved coin is outstanding, and its importance cannot be overemphasized.” Another highlight of this sale is a 1792 Eagle-onGlobe copper quarter dollar MS63, NGC, CAC. “This coin has appeared at auction a mere four times in the past 152 years and was last offered publicly in 1890,” said Rohan. “With one of the two known pieces closely held by the National Numismatic Collection, this is the sole example available to collectors. History suggests an opportunity of only once per generation to acquire one of the most prized patterns of 1792. This is that moment.” More sought-after patterns include the finest of only three known plain edge 1792 copper dimes, with a grade of MS64, NGC, CAC; the finer of two known 1792 thin flan silver dimes, graded AU50, NGC; and Partrick’s 1792 silver center cent XF45+, NGC, CAC, the United States’ first bimetallic coin and a gorgeous example of one of the early experiments of the U.S. Mint. Partrick’s unique Sans Silver 1792 one cent MS62, NGC is the discovery coin that surfaced in 1993, uncovered by Sil DiGenova, Stuart Levine and Anthony Terranova before making its initial public appearance at auction in 1995. Twenty years later, the present sale marks only the second auction appearance of this oneof-a-kind coin. As mentioned above, one of the most colorful and historical offerings of the Partrick collection is an 1861 original Confederate half dollar PR30, NGC, CAC, one of only four struck and the only example that can be traced back to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. For absolute rarity and historic significance, the 1861 Confederate half dollar is unsurpassed in the annals of American coinage. The four examples were struck at the New Orleans
The Yardley Community Centre represents longevity and tradition in the historic Delaware River town of Yardley in Bucks County, Pa. On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16 and 17, the Yardley Community Centre will open its doors for the 61st Annual Antiques Show. Antiquers know not to miss this first show of the new year in Bucks County, and newcomers are encouraged to discover the finds that keep folks returning each year. Not many antique shows can match the longevity of this popular regional show. The key to the show’s success is the quality and variety of antiques provided by dedicated dealers who set up at the show and collectors and dealers who come from all over the region to shop and buy. The show has always had an emphasis on good country antiques. This year, featured items will include primitives, country and traditional furniture, quilts and other textiles, folk art, maps and prints, china, silver, pottery, glassware, jewelry, dolls and books. There will be 21 dealers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. Returning dealers include Red Sleigh Antiques of Langhorne, Pa.; Jan Allen Old Prints and Maps of Johnson City, Tenn.; Linda Grier Antiques of Langhorne, Pa.; Rose B. Gallo of Richmond, Va.; Serendipity of Bridgeton, N.J.; American and European Antiques of Lawrenceville, N.J.; Imagine Antiques of Newtown, Pa.; Ken and Jan Silveri Antiques

The Donald G. Partrick collection of extraordinary United States Colonials Part I will debut on Thursday, Jan. 8, as part of Heritage Auctions’ Jan. 7 to 10 Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Convention auctions to be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. “This is the finest gathering of Colonial coinage ever to appear at auction,” said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions. “It rivals the collections of the greatest names in numismatic history. Donald Partrick’s lifelong passion for early American coins is evident in this extraordinary offering.” An unprecedented grouping of 12 different 1792 pattern coins will be offered (three more than the famous Parmelee and Garrett collections). Another significant highlight of this auction is one of only four original Confederate half dollars, the sole piece pedigreed to CSA president Jefferson Davis. A group of 12 Continental dollars, including two of only four known in silver, comprises another unmatched group of coins.

selves to be the star of the show, the producers placed Jordan in even more unbelievable predicaments. In one such episode called “Money Masters” the Mattel Toy Company contacted Jordan to help locate some extremely rare and hard to find Masters of the Universe toys that were released only overseas. While the episode is still one of my favorites for helping to turn me onto toys I didn’t even know existed, the way the episode plays out leaves a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, later episodes would only get worse. In an episode called “Toys Touchdown” Jordan is asked at a toy show by NFL player turned comic book and toy creator Israel Idonije to find various vintage toys that demonstrate articulation, sizing, and costuming. This

In August of 2012, the Travel Channel took a wellcalculated risk and decided to premier a unique kind of reality-based television show devoted solely to the subject of vintage toys. Hosted by well-known New Jerseybased toy dealer Jordan Hembrough, the show was heavily advertised and was one of only a few realitybased television programs devoted solely to one kind of collectible. When the first episode of “Toy Hunter” premiered it was well received by the casual viewer, but did receive countless mixed reviews from critics and hardcore enthusiasts alike. Most vintage toy collectors were evenly split on the show, with some collectors glad that their favorite hobby was being shown to larger audiences and others worried that the show would lead to a massive speculator boom, thus increasing prices on vintage toys from the 1970s and ’80s. Most Internet-based toy collecting forums became a hotbed of
sold later at a convention still thousands of miles away, one has to wonder what the producers were thinking. This was only the start of some of the less than stellar plot lines that plagued the show. Later seasons would introduce various celebrities who just happened to contact Jordan in an attempt to find a long forgotten toy or to relive their glorious past. As a result the show featured a stellar amount of well-known and lesser known celebrities. Gene Simmons was featured prominently in one episode while Vanilla Ice was featured in another. Even Danny Bonaduce of “The Partridge Family” fame made an appearance. These kinds of celebrity appearances gave several enthusiasts pause. While I fully understand that an average viewer who has no interest in vintage toys may not watch a show of this caliber based solely on the toys themselves, hardcore enthusiasts are not interested in watching former celebrities hunt for toys, especially when most of these toys prominently feature the celebrity in question. By the time the third and final season appeared in 2014 it was painfully obvious that the producers were running out of source material. Rather than allow the toys them-

criticism or praise directed at the show, which led to an increased sense of awareness. This led to more viewers, which in turn led to even more controversy. Sadly, the show ended its three season run in 2014 and is not scheduled to return. During the show’s three seasons it garnered heavy praise for showcasing some of the most popular vintage toys from across a wide range of highly coveted and wellforgotten toy lines. The show is credited with creating a steady rise in popularity for various vintage toy lines like Kenner’s own MASK toy line and other lesser known esoteric toy lines from the 1980s such as Tonka’s Super Naturals line of toys and action figures. The show came under heavy fire and well-deserved criticism for its weak plot lines and wellstaged scenes that cater to the viewer who just wants to know how much their average vintage toy is worth. In order to create a show within the show the producers chose to create some very unbelievable plot lines that Jordan was forced to adhere to. Many of the earlier shows dealt with Jordan having to stay within a set budget while attempting to acquire various vintage toys that would then be sold at major conventions throughout the United States. On the surface this may sound realistic, but when the viewer is forced to watch someone travel the country with a budget of only $3,000 in an effort to buy rare vintage toys that will then be

Collector Anecdotes (Continued from page 3)
episode left viewers wondering why Jordan had to leave a major toy convention to find examples of such traits. Luckily, these kinds of episodes were eventually overshadowed by much better storylines. In an episode called “The Duke of Toys” Jordan travels to England to a large toy convention that eloquently showcases the differences between the domestic vintage toy collecting market here in the States and that of England. The final season of “Toy Hunter” would also contain one of my favorite episodes of all called “’90s Flashbacks.” The episode prominently showcased the growth in ’90s toys and the up-and-coming generation that actively pursues them. The producers made an excellent decision to center this show around the Portland Comic Con as this massive convention is at the forefront of the next generation of toy collecting. Despite its flaws “Toy Hunter” will be sorely missed. This is one of my first holiday seasons in a while without being able to view new episodes featuring Jordan’s true love of vintage

Mint in April of 1861, after that facility was taken into trust by the Confederacy. The coins were dispersed at the time of striking and all knowledge of the issue vanished for the ensuing 18 years. All four coins eventually resurfaced over a period of 110 years, but they were subsequently held tightly in important collections and institutions. The opportunity to acquire a specimen has been almost as rare as the coins themselves. “Among the four known examples, this coin claims the most notable history of them all,” said Rohan. “How many collectors have looked at their favorite coin and wondered if George Washington or Abraham Lincoln ever held it or used it to buy a loaf of bread?
toys. This is one aspect of the show that always felt real. Jordan Hembrough is an excellent toy dealer and his love of these treasures truly shines. I have always said that the real gem of this show was not only the incredible vintage toys themselves, but also being able to watch Jordan as he surrounds himself with something he is so passionate about. The producers made a very wise decision to cast Jordan in this role. In an excess of reality-based collecting shows vintage toy enthusiasts now have no other show to call their own. When Jordan Hembrough announced that the show was placed on permanent hiatus, he did hint that other projects were in the works. Could it be that we haven’t yet seen the last of our favorite toy hunter? I certainly hope not and know that there is now one reality-based television show that will surely be missed. Until that void is filled, toy enthusiasts like me will have no other choice but to download past episodes of the show from their favorite online digital content provider. Here is to hoping Jordan Hembrough makes a return to television soon! The owner of this coin will know for certain that Jefferson Davis carried it as a keepsake for four years through all the turmoil of the Civil War.” Rounding out the Partick Collection highlights are two of only four known Continental dollars in silver, important as examples of the first hard money of the United States. The 1776 Silver Continental dollar MS62, NGC, ex. Boyd, one of two Newman 3-D examples known in silver, is a coin that deserves a prominent place in the finest cabinet. The 1776 Newman Continental dollar XF40, NGC, ex. Garrett, one of only two known Newman 1-C pieces in silver, is most probably the very first Continental dollar in silver mint, and thus a coin of tremendous historic importance. In recent years, The Frick Collection has showcased its strength in Spanish paintings through acclaimed exhibitions; publications; events on VelĂĄzquez, El Greco, and Goya; and the collecting taste
for such works. The focus is warranted, given founder Henry Clay Frick’s early travels to Spain and his deep interest in Spanish artists. Less known, however, is the fact that his first acquisition
of Iberian painting was a significant self-portrait by BartolomĂŠ Esteban Murillo (1617-82), a work that has remained in the Frick family since its purchase in 1904. (Continued on page 10)
