he Antique Dealers Association of Berks County (Pa.) held their annual holiday antiques show on Dec. 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show took place in its usual home of the Leesport Market Exhibition Hall along Rt. 61 in Leesport, Pa., located roughly six miles north of Reading. Proceeds from the show benefit various historical associations throughout Berks County. The long-running show once ran two days, with a Friday evening preview, but has since gone to a one-day format. Around 40 exhibitors filled the hall with holiday related antiques and collectibles, jewelry, glassware, woodenware, baskets, advertising signs, ceramics of all kinds, toys, folk art, and various regional antiques. Show goers of all ages came at the 8 a.m. opening, and

gift buying was high on the agenda for most. Business was thin for many dealers, and the gate was not strong for this once prominent regional event. None the less, show goers looking for a nice piece of antique jewelry or a vintage Christmas ornament had a bounty to choose from, all at affordable prices. Exhibitors Marie Danko, Baron Dietz, and both Patti Guthrie and Lew Larason all had booths full of holiday related material, including ornaments. Kevin Derfler brought a rare miniature Peter Derr (1793-1868) pistol stamped with the metalsmith’s trademark “P.D.” It was priced at $4,400. Derr lived and worked in Berks County, Pa., and his work is collectible, noteably, among regional collectors.

Comic book collectors now have CGC (Comic Guaranty Corporation), owned by the same parent company of NGC and action figure, and toy enthusiasts owe their gratitude to AFA (Action Figure Authority). It is no surprise that collectors have unanimously accepted the practice of grading, as well as encapsulation of such items (albeit not without some controversy and opposition). In conclusion, I am not asking antique dealers and

books and toys are the most recent examples of this phenomenon. Before the millennium, there were no thirdparty grading companies acting within a lot of these fields of interest. Today, record prices are being paid in both these collecting fields, and you can be sure that beside the description of each of these record sales are the acronyms that denote the opinion of a third-party certification company. Condition, condition, condition! This is one of the most prolific statements made when experts counsel “newbies on the subject of antiques and collectibles. This exclamation is usually followed by the tired mantra “buy the best you can afford. Unfortunately, a growing number of antique dealers and auction houses make this very difficult for the beginning enthusiast. I fondly remember my first visit to a higher end auction house. I was looking for my first piece of high end art glass and was almost positive I would be able to locate the perfect piece, have it authenticated, and get educated about the item’s condition, all in the same day. I learned a very important lesson on that day: number one, auction houses don’t always note the condition of an item as easily as they should (sometimes you have to actually request a condition report); number two, a lot of auction houses usually have a disclaimer that you are buying the item “as is with no guarantee of authenticity; and number three, when it comes to being educated about the history
and importance of an item, you are generally on your own. More than a decade later, I can honestly say that I truly bought my education in the antiques and collectibles business. Ironically, this experience came full circle when I was recently involved in an ongoing debate as to why younger generations are not buying antiques in droves when compared to mass-produced collectibles from their youth. In my opinion, the reason why we as younger buyers don’t usually buy antiques as regularly as we buy collectibles has nothing to do with the items themselves, but everything to do with the way they are marketed and sold. I can attempt to prove this theory just by looking at the current fascination my generation has with third-party certification. Coins, comic books, stamps, sports cards, action figures, and toys are all popular collectibles that are sought after by younger buyers. With the exception of stamps and certain kinds of sports cards, most of these fields have posted record sales in the last few years. One can surmise that a reason is due to collector confidence in these markets. Comic

I am, however, asking them to take a cue from the collectibles world and become more transparent about condition grading. How can experienced dealers and enthusiasts expect younger generations to adapt to more experienced collecting fields when all most us have been trained to do is look at a plastic slab with a number on it to decipher the grade and authenticity of any given item? This is not to suggest that the beginning collector should not have to take an interest and knowledgeable understanding in the items they are buying. However, if established antique dealers and auction houses really want to attract younger buyers to traditional antiques, then shouldn’t there be more responsibility than asking the buyer to request a “condition report? I think the future of the trade depends on it, don’t you?

Bringing In The New Year By Bob Dissinger
The New Year (January 1st) has been “brought in” over numerous centuries in various ways. Traditionally, in modern times it is celebrated
with feasting, festivity, fun, frivolity, drinking, noisemaking, watching the clock, resolution making, lowering from on high items like glass balls, bolognas, pickles, goats
and almost anything you can think of. Fortune, luck, and prosperity are the “hoped fors” in bringing in the New Year. Some foods that are said to bring good luck, fortune, and prosperity to the consumer are pork, black-eyed peas, rice, and doughnuts. Some symbols that represent good fortune, luck, and prosperity as seen on these postcards are pigs, horseshoes, mushrooms, four-leaf clovers, and gold coins. They

vary from locale to locale, state to state, and country to country. Pigs symbolize prosperity. The four leaves on a clover represent faith, hope, love, and luck. The postcards are from my collection, and I am happy to share them with you. Let your imagination flow with the artist’s presentation. It is my hope that you will enjoy the cards. I wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year 2014.

Special Exhibition Shop For “Vermeer, Rembrandt, And Hals” For the first time in the institution’s history, the Frick has opened an additional museum shop space within the building to accompany a special exhibition. Visitors will find an array of gift items inspired by works in the highly attended fall and winter show “Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Hals: Masterpieces of Dutch Painting from the Mauritshuis.” These gifts include mugs, tote bags, T-shirts, watches, calendars, and wooden puzzles. Among the related stationary items are note cards, notebooks, and sketch pads. At the heart of the exhibition is Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” and interest in seeing this work, which has not been shown in New York City in almost 30 years, has resulted in an offering of pearl related gifts, as well as a showcase of cultured and natural pearl jewelry. The exhibition shop also carries a wide selection of publications. A top seller is the beautifully illustrated exhibition catalog, which guides readers through the highlights of the magnificent collection of the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague. The book features 35 masterpieces of
