As The Old Year Winds Down, TFC Starts The New Year With Precision And Splendor oday the question “What time is it?” is quickly answered by looking at any number of devices around us, from watches to phones to computers. For millennia, however, determining the correct time was not so simple. In fact, it was not until the late thirteenth century that the first mechanical clocks were made, slowly replacing sundials and water clocks. It would take several

and moon. The smaller dial beneath it is an alarm. The Development Of The Watch Watches were introduced in the middle of the sixteenth century following the refinement of spring-driven clocks. Like the early clocks, the first watches were inaccurate, valued primarily as luxury items and fashion accessories by men and women of distinction. Just as clocks were unreliable until the pendulum clock was invented in 1653, watches became more accurate only after 1675 when the balance spring was introduced. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the most sought-after watches were decorated with enamels to resemble miniature paintings on paper, parchment, or ivory. A stunning example is an early balancespring watch made in Switzerland about 1685. The movement by Henry Arlaud is set into a AbrahamLouis Breguet lavish enamel case (1747-1823) and by Pierre Huaud II. sents the Antoine-Louis Breguet Both men were the Roman goddess (1776-1858), Gold and Silver sons of French Fortuna and serves Double-Dial Desk Watch Protestants who had Decimal and fled France and as a reminder of the Showing capriciousness of Traditional Time, circa 1795- established themlife. inspired the scenes. In this case, Huaud based his composition after The Toilet of Venus, a large canvas of around 1640 by the French artist Simon Vouet. It is unlikely that Huaud ever saw the painting (now at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh), copying instead the engraving of 1651 made by Vouet’s son-in-law, Michel Dorigny. Indeed, the scene on the watch is oriented like the engraving, which is a reverse image of the original painting. Huaud chose to execute the composition using the rich and vivid colors that were his family’s trademark.
18th-Century Splendor: Remarkable Loans Featured The precision and splendor of the art of clockmaking in France during the eighteenth century is extremely well represented by several clocks from the collection of Horace Wood Brock. Although by this point their mechanisms had become both reliable and accurate, clocks continued to be valued as objects of distinction used to display their owners’ wealth and refinement. A perfect example is the lavish clock with its two matching vases. Made of a rare type of Chinese porcelain known as celadon bleu fleuri, the already costly

Burlington County. With the experience gained at Haddon Heights, she was able to open another successful multidealer shop, the Grist Mill Antiques Center. “I get a lot of joy from being in this business, says Lind. “There’s the joy when a dealer makes a big sale, the joy when a customer finds something they’ve been looking for, and the joy of knowing that I’ve helped save something from the landfill. The antique business is the ultimate green business.
“Plus, she adds, “it’s a way for people to buy genuine, old, quality-made things. As a thank you to loyal customers over the past twenty years and an incentive for new customers to check out the shop, the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will be celebrating the entire week leading up to the anniversary with special sales and special gifts. For more information, phone Haddon Heights Antiques Center at (856) 5460555.

The center expanded to the second floor of the building within a couple of years, and when a beauty parlor next door vacated the premises, the wall was opened up and a new space for more antiques was born. There are currently 66 dealers renting spaces at the Haddon Heights Antiques Center, with 16 of them renting two or more spaces. “We opened in the days before eBay, and now things have changed, says Lind. “We have to make our items more attractive with aggressive discounts. One thing customers like to do that they can’t do on the Internet is to hold an object in their hands before they buy it. Here, they can do that. Plus, they don’t have to pay shipping charges. Several years after opening the Haddon Heights Antiques Center, Lind took a bigger plunge and bought an old grist mill in the historic town of Pemberton in

Twenty years ago, on January 15, 1993, accountant Barbara Lind, an avid antique collector and occasional show dealer, gambled on an entrepreneurial dream. She rented a large storefront on busy Clements Bridge Road in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, found 35 antique dealers to share her dream, and opened the Haddon Heights Antiques Center for business. From the start, Lind had a business plan. She wanted to keep the store open seven days a week, she wanted the dealers to cooperatively work one day a month in the shop, she wanted to pay the dealers with a weekly check and a detailed print-out of their sales, and she wanted to offer customers better discounts than they could find almost anywhere else. Obviously, her strategy is working because, while other antique shops have come and gone, the Haddon Heights Antiques Center has grown.
