Charles Martignette Collection Tallys Final Result Total Of $21.68 Million

Charles Edward Chambers (American, 1883-1941) cover illustration titled “St. Valentine’s Day,” 1927, is an oilon-canvas measuring 36-by-30-inches and sold for $13,145 (est. $6,000$8,000).

The Modest Stein (American, 18711958) Western Story pulp cover from April 22, 1933 is an oil-on-board and sold for $6,572 (est. $1,500-$2,500). “America’s artistic history owes a great debt to Charles. I’m thrilled that Heritage played a role in sharing the collection with the entire world, and demonstrating what a brilliant guy he was.” Martignette himself was controversial, outspoken, hard-living and obsessive in his singular pursuit of the art he so coveted, yet there is no controversy surrounding what is now his extraordinary legacy. What started with pin-up and glamour art of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s rapidly expanded into an exquisite, all-embracing consideration of the history of

illustration art in the United States. He also is remembered for his opus, “Gil Elvgren All His Glamorous American Pin-Ups,” a book he co-wrote with author Louis K. Meisel for Taschen Books in 1996. Martignette died in 2008 in Florida. Originally appraised at $12.2 million, Heritage shortly began auctioning the collection in mid-2009, setting numerous artist records. Career-defining artworks of America’s greatest illustration artists including Norman Rockwell, Gil Elvgren, Alberto Vargas, Dean Cornwell and J.C. Leyendecker, saw their auction debut as part of the collection. The more iconic and highestselling works included “Gay Nymph,” 1947, by Elvgren, which realized $286,800 in 2011, the still-standing world record price for the artist at auction. The collection’s emphasis on high-end works and This work by Joseph Christian Leyendecker (American, 1874-1951) of Charles Beach, a WWI American sailor, 1918, sold for $26,290 (est. $5,000-$7,000). pin-up classics by Elvgren quickly made headlines around the world after “It’s a Snap” (Pretty Snappy; Snap Judgment), 1958, sold for $215,100, an unheard of sum paid for a work of its kind. The painting had been estimated to sell for $30,000.

This oil-and-pencil-on-masonite by Douglass Crockwell (American, 190468) used on the Saturday Evening Post cover, April 4, 1942, sold for $71,700 (est. $6,000-$8,000). The collection also held artworks by masters of Modern and Contemporary Art, including “Sheena, Queen of the Jungle,” 1963, by Mel Ramos, which sold for $179,250 in 2010 and classic examples of popular American West illustrators, such as William Herbert Dunton. Dunton’s “The Badger Hole” (Spill), 1906, sold for $143,400 in 2009. Demand for the artwork that caught Martignette’s eye shows no signs of slowing. Gil Elvgren’s “Bear Facts” (A Modest Look; Bearback Rider), 1962, a Brown & Bigelow calendar illustration, sold for $209,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Oct. 14, 2015 Illustration Art Auction in New York. “Charles pursued artworks decades before the artists were household names,” said Halperin. “When Heritage Auctions first examined the collection we were astounded. It cast an overdue spotlight on artists whose work had been an endearing, but largely overlooked, contribution to American pop culture.” To learn more, visit www.HA.com.

When the art world first learned in 2009 that the Charles Martignette collection of illustration art was headed to auction, art circles speculated over how the market would respond to what was widely considered the most comprehensive and impressive survey of the genre ever assembled. As the very last works finally crossed the block recently, the Martignette collection has realized more than $21.68 million during nearly six years of sales at Heritage Auctions. This collection of pin-up, pulp, and commercial illustration art totaled 4,300 lots over those six years of sales and redefined a market. “We predicted this collection had the potential to set records and it certainly delivered,” said Heritage Auctions co-founder James Halperin, a one-time employer (in the early 1970s) and long-time friend of Martignette.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: January Is A Great Time To Collect

Peter Swift Seibert I wrote this column in the weeks leading up to Christmas, and was already thinking about the New Year. Many of you remember the old days of Jim Burk’s one-day New Year’s Day show in York, Pa. It was a highlight for me, as lots of dealers were anxious to sell in order to help get through both tax time and the low-income season during winter. While the show is gone, January is a great time to go see your favorite dealer. Many dealers need cash for tax payments and so selling stale merchandise at a good price is a great way of having some badly needed liquidity. January is also the time that many part-time dealers reflect upon whether they are really happy with being

dealers. Some are in it for the long haul while others realize that it is time to cut bait and sell their merchandise. This is a great time to be out and hunting for treasures. Competition is often down as folks are often financially hungover from the excesses of December and so bargains can be found at times, particularly among dealers who are going out of business. One thing to always remember about dealer sales is to take advantage of them. Assuming that an item will be there when you return is dangerous. More often than not, I have missed out on great treasures because I hesitated. The other thing that often occurs in January is that collectors and dealers find themselves needing cash for those December credit card payments. As such, they often need to sell items fast and that is a golden opportunity for collectors to be there with cash in hand. Note that I said, “cash in hand” as that is the fastest way to make a sale. Nothing can kill a deal faster than a customer who wants time payments or to use a credit card. In January, with

bills looming, people want cash. I recall in Santa Fe, N.M., wandering into a shop in January and spotting a genuine western police badge. Now, mind you, 99.9 percent of the police badges from the Wild West are fakes, but this one happened to be genuine and the dealer was motivated to sell for cash. Like most of us, I do not carry lots of cash so off to the closest money machines to draw out what I needed. This worked great and was a reminder to me of the lesson that dealers, particularly during this time of year, prefer cash. One caveat to all of this is that many cash machines restrict how much you can withdraw in a given day. This happened to us in Colorado where we spotted some wonderful items but they exceeded my card limit. Thankfully my wife was there and she could pull from her account but a lesson to the wise for sure. So as you venture out after the holidays, this is a great time to think about expanding your existing collection or building a new one.

Wunsch drove the Foundation to focus on American Decorative Arts in the 1970s. He was an accomplished mechanical engineer and inventor by profession, as well as one of the foremost collectors of American furniture and Old Masters paintings by avocation. A distinguished scholar, he inspired many like-minded collectors, dealers, and curators to join him in preserving America’s art history. Now overseen by Peter, Eric, and Noah Wunsch, WAF continues its investment in American antiquities through education and preservation initiatives. The Foundation operates out of New York City, where it manages its lending, sharing, and gifting relationships with a host of institutions throughout the United States. In 2012, the Foundation established the Eric M. The inaugural Eric M. Wunsch Award was given to Patricia E. Kane, the Friends of American Arts Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Yale University Art Gallery. Linda H. Jenrette of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and his foundation, the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust were the 2014 recipients, and in 2015 WAF honored the Chipstone Foundation and Brooklyn Museum director Arnold Lehman. Armory in New York City. The 2016 loan exhibition sponsor is Bessemer Trust. Presenting sponsor Chubb Personal Insurance provides support for the 20th consecutive year. The title of the exhibition is adapted from a 1936 public lecture given in New York City by former museum director Everett “Chick” Austin: “For we must have the great things of the past to enjoy and to study, but with that valuable experience and pleasure as guide and criterion, we must surely seek to live in the present and to try to create the new forms which are to be our legacy to the future.” Founded in 1842, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is the oldest continually operating public art museum in the United States. The museum’s nearly 50,000 works of art span 5,000 years, from Greek and Roman antiquities to the first museum collection of American contemporary art. Thanks to the enormous gifts of predecessors, the Wadsworth

“Coast Scene, Mount Desert” by Frederic Edwin Church, 1863, will be on view, courtesy of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, bequest of Clara Hinton Gould, 1948.178. Atheneum’s collection is home to many significant works. It was the first museum in the United States to purchase works by Caravaggio, Frederic Church, Joseph Cornell, and Salvador Dalí, and was the first to exhibit major surveys of works by Italian masters, Surrealists, and Picasso. Highlights of the collection include a strong holding of

Baroque masterpieces, such as Artemisia Gentileschi’s “SelfPortrait as a Lute Player,” and an important collection of contemporary art, including works by Ellsworth Kelly, George Segal, Kiki Smith, and Kara Walker. “We at the Wadsworth Atheneum are profoundly honored to have been chosen by the Winter Antiques Show

pre-sale estimates, an Art Nouveau-inspired sterling and labradorite brooch ($1,100) and ring ($600) were complimented by a modern design Regitze Overgaard bracelet ($650) and Joan Polsdorfer bracelet ($850). The strongest portion of the sale proved to be sterling, and again featured many fine, rare designer pieces, including Tiffany & Co, Cartier, J. E. Caldwell, and Allan Adler. The sale alternated between larger, showcase pieces and serving ware, notably 13 lots of repousse from S. Kirk & Son, bringing an average $20 to $40 per ounce. The highlight of the group was a modern design Gorham “Circa 70” tea service with ebony handles, which sold to a phone bidder after heated bidding for $17,000 (est. $10,000 to $15,000). “Fine art proved to be another strong category in the sale, which offered a great variety of works from the 18th to 21st centuries,” said Fine Art specialist Colleen Deemer. “The early portion showcased contemporary artists and

revealed strong interest for this burgeoning market.” A large oil-and-pastel work titled “Supporting Her Dreams” by ArmenianAmerican artist Yuroz set the tone for the category, bringing $4,000. Also featured were four works by Norman Leto, a Polish artist, including one diptych which was later used in a scene in his acclaimed film “Sailor.” Recalling the sculpturalism of Thomas Hart Benton, “Bee Keeper” by Santa Fe, N.M., based artist Jim Vogel sold online for $1,500. Modern artists were represented in a Southwestern watercolor by Howard Cook ($1,400) and an oil-on-canvas of a mother and child by Korean Hang Sub Park, sold for $7,000. A gestural oil-on-panel work by Dutch artist, Jozef Israels titled “Returning to Market” was purchased by a collector for $3,250. The audience was surprised to see a fine 19th-century portrait of a gentleman sell for $4,000, far exceeding its $200 to $400 estimate. By early afternoon the sale shifted focus to furniture. Amongst an elegant display of

Committee to present this year’s loan exhibition,” said David W. Dangremond, President of the Board of Trustees. “We hope that visitors to the Armory are surprised and delighted by the highlights from our collection and as a result will endeavour to visit the museum to see our offerings in their entirety.” The Winter Antiques Show celebrates its 62nd year as America’s most distinguished art and design fair, with 73 specialists in American, English, European, and Asian fine and decorative arts exhibiting exceptional objects from Antiquity through the 1960s, all vetted for authenticity. The net proceeds from the show benefit East Side House Settlement (ESHS), which provides access to quality education and technology training as gateways out of poverty to students in the South Bronx, one of the nation’s poorest congressional districts. The goal of ESHS is to help motivated students graduate from high school, enroll in college, and build the skills necessary to secure good jobs. In 2016, ESHS will celebrate its 125th year.

These Westhead & Moore Cauldon plates sold for $1,600. tall-case clocks, tilt-top tables, and Gothic style furnishings, the rustic, sturdy design of 19th-century American furniture proved to be the most desirable. Several cupboards exceeded expectations, including a two-piece cherry Dutch cupboard which brought $2,200 and a primitive ochre grained single-door cupboard which garnered $2,000. Continental decorative arts composed a large portion of the sale. The gem of this category was a set of six Westhead & Moore Cauldon plates in turquoise and brown with elaborate gilt arch design and floral decorations which sold for $1,600. Several lots sold well above estimate, including a three-piece French Champleve clock set for $1,800. A matched set of white

and cranberry glass jars with portrait and floral decorations sold for $700. A 19th-century German bisque head doll, accompanied with Victorian-era accessories, as well a tin type portrait of its young owner was not overlooked by bidders, and finally closed at $1,100. Other unique to market pieces included a Columbia graphophone in working condition, two Black Forest mantle clocks, and two circa 1800 equinoctial sundials. The sale concluded around 7 p.m., after presenting a lifetime collection of historical ephemera, primarily Victorianera and Lincoln related as well as over 60 lots of leather bound book sets. Attributed to Mifflintown Chair Works in Juniata County, the crest is decorated with a dramatic landscape of rolling hills, trees, and a series of 10 building spires in the distance. The piece appears in Zilla Lea’s “The Ornamental Chair and a similar settee from the same shop was sold by Pook & Pook Inc. in 2007 from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Donald Shelley, for $128,700. Furniture enthusiasts should also look into a Massachusetts William & Mary walnut and cherry twopart high chest, circa 1740, from the private collection of Israel Sack of Virginia, as well as an exceedingly rare MidAtlantic Hepplewhite mahogany and cherry bowfront chest of drawers, possibly from the shop of Charles Cameron of Shepherdstown, W. larger Pier Antique Show proved a fabulous model, benefiting antique and collectible lovers of all fields and areas of interest,” said International Vintage Poster Fair co-producer David Pollack. In addition, the Pier show’s dealers had outstanding remarks to say about the entire weekend event. George Sorensen of George Sorensen Antiques, who is known for his French Art Glass, had a strong show. “This November’s Pier Antique Show was my best show ever, and I hope that I can return again next year. The show has allowed me to build a great client base in New York.” First-time dealer to the Pier show, Paul MacLardy of Arise Bazaar, also commented on the remarkable success he had at his booth. “The show attracted a good and knowledgeable crowd that appreciated all aspects of design. I sold a wide variety, including art, textiles, Buddhist and three-dimensional pieces, and I have a lot of follow-up with clients after the show.” The Pier Antique Show featured more than 300 exhibitors presenting collections of antique and vintage merchandise. Items featured on the show floor included a huge range of kitchen and home décor, paintings, antique jewelry, art glass, ceramics, and more. Also, a varied selection of vintage clothing, jewelry, and handbags were available in the popular Fashion Alley area of the show. U.S. Antique Shows produces six shows nationally. For more information, visit www.U.S.AntiqueShows.com.

U.S. Antique Shows held the Pier Antique Show at Pier 94, New York City, N.Y., on Nov. 14 and 15. The company reported impressive crowds across the show floor as well as at the onsite events, such as Appraisal Day and the Tiffany Glass Series. “We hosted three events at this November’s show to assist in garnering new interest from those who have not attended before. The effort was a huge success. We saw an exponential increase of people at Appraisal Day, and the Tiffany Glass Series prompted an interest in buying art glass at the show,” said Dan Darby, Emerald Expositions vice president and U.S. Antique Shows general manager. “Additionally, we announced the inaugural Antiques Young Gun of the Year, which honors a young professional working in the antiques industry.” The show’s discounted admission enticed attendees, as evident by the long lines at the beginning of each show day. Tickets were reduced from $20 to $10. New this November, the show also featured a distinct section of exhibitors from the International Vintage Poster Fair, the world’s oldest and largest poster fair. These dealers showcased a wide array of original posters from the 1890s through the 1980s. Genres included travel and transportation, food and product advertising, war and propaganda, and much more. “Large enthusiastic crowds of both experienced buyers and newcomers to vintage posters made the Poster Fair a great success. Early European Playing Cards To Be Displayed Only three decks of European hand-painted playing cards are known to have survived from the late Middle Ages. Two were made in Germany and one in the Burgundian Netherlands, and all date from the early to late 15th century. The only complete set of these luxury cards, the Cloisters Playing Cards from the southern Netherlands, and representative examples from the other two decks will be featured in the upcoming exhibition “The World in Play: Luxury Cards, 1430-1540,” opening Wednesday, Jan. 20 and running through Sunday, April 17, at The Cloisters. The Cloisters is the branch

of the Metropolitan Museum dedicated to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. The exhibit will be held in Romanesque Hall (Gallery 001). The earliest surviving deck of hand-painted woodcut cards, and the finest example of such work from the German Renaissance will also be included in the exhibition, where contextual background will be provided by 15th-century engraved and woodcut playing cards from Germany and tarot cards from North Italy. Among the works on view will be examples by the Basel painter Konrad Witz (1400-45) and two other artists of the period who were

known as Master E. S. and Master of the Playing Cards. Card games originated in China in the 9th century and were later taken up in India and the Middle East. Playing cards first appeared in Europe around the late 14th century, probably through trade. Because card games often involved gambling, clerical and civilian authorities in Europe banned cards. Early European decks were not standardized and featured diverse suit pictures as well as variety in the number of suits and the number of cards. Exhibition Overview The three hand-painted decks represented in the exhibition - the Stuttgart

Cards (ca. 1430), the Ambras Courtly Hunt Cards (ca. 1440), and The Cloisters Playing Cards (ca. 1470-80) were made over a span of some 50 years by different artists in different locations. Although each of these decks is unique, all feature images related to hunting, a favorite leisure activity of medieval nobility. The high quality of the paintings and excellent condition of the cards suggest that the luxury sets were never played. Rather, they may have served as engaging collectors’ items, like portfolios of prints or drawings, for the private enjoyment of their owners. Representing the earliest known deck of cards is the

Although the theme is the hunt, no actual hunt is shown. Rather, the imagery of the Stuttgart Cards serves as a metaphor for the

patron’s view of the world, evoking a chivalric past in which man exists in harmony with nature. The deck’s four suits are falcons, hounds, ducks, and stags. On the basis of overall Continued on page 18

Stonehaven’s latest scheme, before the murderer strikes again. Early reviews and other kudos for Sheluk’s debut novel have been consistent in their praise. Here is a sampling. “In her first book, Toronto writer Judy Penz Sheluk probably scores a record for the most characters with skeletons in the closet. Even the sleuth figure, an investigative reporter, guards a personal mystery in a book whose author hits large in the business of concocting secrets.” The Toronto Star, Oct. 31, 2015. “A small town with a history that is pertinently addressed, numerous stories with backstories explored just enough for us to want to know more, and an antiques shop with the most exquisite candlesticks you’ll never be able to purchase: what more do you want?” Canadian Antiques & Vintage, November 2015. “In her first novel, Judy Penz Sheluk has written a well-crafted mystery in the classic tradition. A small town with a dark past, its inhabitants full of secrets, a ruthless developer, and an intrepid

reporter with secrets of her own come together to create a can’t-put-down-read.” Vicki Delany/Eva Gates, bestselling author of the Constable Molly Smith and Lighthouse Library mystery series. “A thoroughly engaging debut mystery ... well plotted, well paced and just plain well done!” Elizabeth J. Duncan, award-winning author of the Penny Brannigan mystery series and Shakespeare in the Catskills mysteries. “The Hanged Man’s Noose: A Glass Dolphin Mystery” (LCCN: 2015937582), is 178 pages, and available as a trade paperback or eBook. TWO TOY TRAIN AUCTIONS

S916544

By day, Judy Penz Sheluk immerses herself in the world of antiques and architectural journalism as senior editor of “New England Antiques Journal” and editor of “Home BUILDER” magazine. But her talent for a turn of phrase and imaginative description doesn’t stop there. With the release of her debut novel, “The Hanged Man’s Noose: A Glass Dolphin Mystery,” Sheluk is making her mark as a formidable armchair sleuth and riveting storyteller, with a raft of positive reviews as reinforcement. Published this year by Barking Rain Press, an imprint of the BRP Publishing Group (BRP), “The Hanged Man’s Noose” unravels the smalltown secrets and subterfuge that led to murder in a tale of high-stakes real estate wrangling gone awry. The tale begins when journalist Emily Garland lands a plum assignment as the editor of a niche magazine based in Lount’s Landing, a small town named after a colorful Canadian traitor. As she interviews local business owners for the magazine, Emily quickly learns that many people are unhappy with real estate mogul Garrett Stonehaven’s plans to convert an old schoolhouse into a big-box store. At the top of that list is Arabella Carpenter, the outspoken owner of the Glass Dolphin antiques shop, who will do just about anything to preserve the integrity of the town’s historic Main Street. Another vocal dissenter at a town hall meeting about the proposed project dies, and a few days later another body is discovered. Although both deaths are ruled accidental, Emily’s journalistic suspicions are aroused. Putting her reporting skills to the ultimate test, Emily teams up with Arabella to discover the truth behind
