Currier & Ives Print “Across The Continent” Sets Record At Swann FRIDAY JANUARY 18, 2019 • VOL. 50, NO. 3

Winterthur To Open Major New Exhibition “Costuming ‘The Crown’” Exhibit Will Be The First Global Comprehensive Exhibition Of Costumes From The First Two Seasons Of The Hit Netflix Show

From the dazzling gold of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation robe to the simple sophistication of Princess Margaret’s wedding dress, “Costuming ‘The Crown’” at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library will feature 40 iconic costumes from the beloved Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning drama “The Crown.” The Netflix Original series, produced by Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television, is a dramatized history of Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign, as the fragile social order established after the Second World War breaks apart. The exhibition will be on view in the Winterthur Galleries from March 30, 2019, to Jan. 5, 2020. Beginning with spectacle and

pageantry, “Costuming ‘The Crown,’” reveals everything from the majesty of royal crowns and tiaras to the private looks worn by the royal family in the quiet moments behind the palace doors. This intriguing exhibition provides a behind-the-scenes look at how costume design is used to complement riveting drama, recreate history, and define characters from the footmen to the queen. “Costuming ‘The Crown’” at Winterthur will be the first global comprehensive exhibition of costumes from the first and second seasons of the series. Visitors can see how Emmy- and BAFTA-winning designers Michele Clapton and Jane Petrie worked painstakingly to be authentic in the detailing of everything from King George’s medals and military ribbons to Queen Elizabeth’s iconic dresses for royal tours. “Costuming ‘The Crown’” explains the significance and importance of costume design to the story. Visitors will move through four sections in the exhibition, beginning with “Establishing Roles,” which explores the transformative nature of costume, looking at the ensembles worn for the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. With these impressive garments, steeped in history, the young Continued on page 2

Pennsylvania Native The Focus Of Exhibit At Palmer Museum Of Art In State College, Pa. The Ashcan School painter and Pennsylvania-native John Sloan was preoccupied with the New York City rooftop perhaps more than any other American artist in the first half of the 20th century. This setting factors into some of his most iconic works. F. and Ruth du Pont also shared through their interest in, and encounters with, Queen Elizabeth II. Critics have lauded “The Crown,” which has received 26 nominations for Primetime Emmy awards and multiple Golden Globes awards in its first two seasons, including Best Drama. Based on the award-winning play, “The Audience,” the series reunites creator/writer Peter Morgan (“The Queen,” “Frost/Nixon”) with director Stephen Daldry (“Billy Elliot,” “The Hours”) and producer Andy Harries (“The Queen”). “The Crown,” a series that is unprecedented in its scale, ambition, and creative vision, chronicles the major political and global events from the late 1940s until mid1960s in seasons one and two. Princess Elizabeth takes on her new role and becomes the queen in much the same way the actors are transformed into their roles through costume. “Dressing the Part” explores the replica costumes, based on extensive photographic and video archive research, and considers how clothing signifies status. By looking at a variety of costumes from a schoolboy uniform and official military uniforms to the exquisite outfits worn to attend a royal wedding, we see the role of clothing in indicating one’s place in society. “Creating Character” investigates scenes in which the costume designers were allowed to interpret the characters’ looks with their own designs and explores private moments in their daily lives. Though many of us are fascinated by royalty, we see the royal family only through a narrowly focused lens. “Capturing the Image,” the final section of the exhibition, looks at clothing worn by the queen and others in actual photographs and on television, highlighting the

Maps and atlases represented a generous portion of the sale, with several lots taking top spots and setting records. Maps included Samuel de Champlain’s scarce 1664 record of his later discoveries in Canada, going for $22,500, and John Overton’s “New and Most Exact” map of America from 1671, selling for $11,875. Additional cartographic material featured a chart of the middle Atlantic Coast

including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina by Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres ($13,750); Joan Vingboons’ “Caarte van Westindien,” ca. 1700, a large engraved chart of Florida, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean ($10,625); and a 1676 “New and Accurate” map of the world by John Speed ($9,375). Atlases included George Woolworth Colton’s “Atlas of America” on the physical and political geography of North and South America and the West India Islands, which set a record with $11,250, and a first edition of a rare atlas of Spanish-controlled harbors in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, which earned $11,700. Perhaps in response to the political climate, satirical color plate books performed well with “Caricaturana,” 1836-38, Honoré Daumier’s collaboration with Charles Philipon taking aim at French society, selling for $18,750, and “The Caricature Magazine,” ca. 1806, by George Moutard Woodward, which satirized

a record with $11,875. Also from the selection was Thomas Say’s “American Conchology,” 1830, and a wellillustrated manuscript ciphering book from the 18th century by William Greene ($8,750 and $8,125, respectfully). A run of Japanese material was led by a color woodblock map of Uraga and Edo Bay relating to Commodore Matthew Perry and his Black Ships at $15,600. Additional Perry material included a manuscript report on the arrival of the commodore, featuring two large portraits of Perry and Commander Henry A. Adams, which was sold for $6,500. A panoramic color woodblock map of the roadways, waterways, cities, towns, and topography of the entire island chain of Japan and a large Edo-period woodblock Japanese atlas and encyclopedia were won for $8,450 apiece. “In many ways, this sale showed a great confidence in the antique map market with more interest than has been seen and strong prices to back that up. It was also encouraging to witness a surge in the middle-market items. The highlight of the sale, Currier & Ives’ ‘Across the Continent,’ was an exceptional result. It is a beautiful, historic image, but it was the fact that it was such a meaningful piece of Thomas Winthrop Streeter’s personal collection that propelled it into record territory,” noted Caleb Kiffer, specialist of maps and atlases. The next speciality Maps and Atlases, Natural History, and Color Plate Books Auction at Swann Galleries will be on Thursday, June 6.

5. Stamps and Philately in General Stamps were once considered a great investment and an even better collectible. The amount of history contained within the hobby of stamps is immense, and arguably only numismatics rivals it. That said, general stamp collecting has been on a definitive downward trend for some time now and younger generations just aren’t latching onto it to prevent any noticeable upticks in the market. Much like coins and currency collecting, if you are lucky enough to own a very rare and valuable piece that sells for the high five-figure amount or the coveted six-figure numbers, then you can pretty much set your own price or let an auction house set it for you. For collectors of midto high-range pieces of which there are many examples, expect lukewarm sales at auction and less interest from the few buyers who are still playing in this market. Advice to novice collectors and investors: A turnaround in stamp collecting just isn’t

4. Numismatics: Coins and Currency This category pains me the most as I love the history of coins and paper money. That said, ever since the financial crisis and eventual collapse in prices of silver and gold that retreated off their highs from 2011, interest in numismatics for anything other than rare and highly coveted pieces has been less than stellar. You can buy a lot of what were once considered high-grade key pieces at a fraction of their highs. The 1896 $1 Educational Note is a great example of an item that has a lot of demand, but has fallen in value. The same can be said for almost all of the Carson City Morgan Dollars in gem mint grades. I’m sorry, but very little can spark renewed interest in the numismatics field simply due to the fact that very few younger collectors have a valid interest. This trend will not change any time soon. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Novice collectors willing to invest significant sums of money and time would benefit if the market ever turns around. Investors

It’s that time of year again. We have now said goodbye to the year 2018 and are focused on New Year’s resolutions, gym memberships, and tax preparation. Of course, no new year would be complete without the annual tradition of assessing what is hot and what is not as we enter into an exciting new year in the antiques and collectibles trade. I will be starting off this entry by looking at five collecting categories that have either lost significant ground in 2018 or were already on a significant downtrend that continues to this very day. Some of these categories within the broader collectibles market have been routinely discussed by myself and other commenters in the trade. Others are based on my own observations in the trade and may be controversial to some. That said, as always, I stand behind all entries on this list and encourage any skeptics to place emotion and nostalgia aside and instead look at basic market fundamentals. Now on to the list.

1. Hot Wheels/Matchbox Cars Vintage and contemporary diecast cars are dying a prolonged and slow death on the secondary market. Yes, there is still demand for vintage and sought-after Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars in near-mint or better condition. That said, if you check the prices at which common and even mid-tier cars are selling for, a troubling trend emerges. Younger generations are not collecting them at the same rate as older collectors. This is placing downward price pressure on cars that once sold for the $100-$200 range, which now can be seen selling for $75 or less in some cases at online auctions. Expect this trend to continue. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Collect what you love, but don’t

Pennsylvania German fraktur has an instantly recognizable style. The fractured calligraphy surrounded by birds, swirls, and flowers evolved to become a distinct form of American folk art. Learn how to make fraktur at two classes offered by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society in Lancaster, Pa., both taught by local artist Emily Smucker-Beidler. The first class introduces the imagery of fraktur, and the second focuses on the calligraphy of fraktur. For advanced students, there will be a one-on-one workshop the same days. The first class, “Fraktur Introduction,” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how to create the imagery of fraktur, rendering traditional motifs in ink before painting them in watercolor. By the end of the class, each participant will have their own small work of fraktur to take home. Smucker-Beidler will also give a presentation on the history of fraktur, looking at the three distinct styles from southeastern Pennsylvania. A starter kit containing the basic supplies needed to explore the world of fraktur is included with the class. The deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 25; the class costs $75 for society members, $85 for nonmembers. The second class, “The Illuminated Letter,” picks up where the first class leaves off, focusing on learning lettering and calligraphy within the context and history of fraktur. It will take place on Saturday, March 16,

Milestone Auctions To “Present Arms” And Important Militaria In Jan. 19 Sale Civil War Archives Containing Pa. Soldier’s Diaries, Tintype, And Gettysburg Correspondence Among Standout Collections To Be Sold Some of the highest-quality firearms and most important historical relics ever to pass through Milestone Auctions’ doors will be presented in a Saturday, Jan. 19, sale comprising more than 800 lots. Many of the items chosen for the suburban Cleveland company’s first event of 2019 are fresh to the market from private collections. Bidders are warmly invited to attend in person at the gallery or to participate by phone, absentee, or live via the internet. The auction was intentionally designed as a one-day affair. “We’re a boutique auction house and take a different approach as to how we market consignments. I think it’s especially evident with our firearms sales,” said Milestone co-owner Chris Sammet. “While a marathon sale of three or four consecutive days

may work quite well for some auction houses, we prefer not to conduct massive multipleday firearms sales. We strive to keep the number of lots manageable so items don’t get lost in the shuffle. We feel that we owe it to our consignors to make sure their pieces have a One of 11 lots from the Civil War archive of James Bolestridge of 23rd Regiment Pennsylvania chance to shine.” The auction will Volunteers and Birney’s Zouaves will include letters with first-person accounting of the Battle open with modern- of Gettysburg. The massive (11 feet, 2 inches-by-3 feet, 10 inches) painting shows an elderly widow sitting on her husband’s tombstone and is hand-signed by Marc Davis. “This animation art auction was our best to date,” said Heritage Auctions animation art director Jim Lentz. “It showcased the global love of animation art. Record prices were seen across the board for all the studios: Disney, Hanna Barbera, Warner Brothers and so many more!” Two lots set individual records: “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?” full cast stock production cel (Hanna-Barbera, 1969) was driven by two dozen bidders to a record price of $26,400, while Winsor McCay’s “Gertie the Dinosaur” animation drawing original art (1914) sparked 16 similarly eager bidders before establishing a new standard for “Gertie” artwork when it brought $24,000. Mickey Mouse Turns 90 Perhaps the most celebrated animated character of all time, Mickey Mouse was hailed in the auction through the sale of 65 lots. Leading the way was “Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse and Pete” animation drawing original art (Walt Disney, 1928), a rare 12field, two-peghole animation drawing in graphite of both Mickey Mouse and Peg Leg Pete that went for $14,400 to the winning bidder from a field of 28. A large auction focusing primarily on Americana and timed to coincide with Americana Week in New York City is planned for Wednesday, Jan. 23, by Nye & Company Auctioneers online and in the firm’s gallery at 20 Beach St. in Bloomfield, N.J., starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Internet bidding will be provided by LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. The sale is titled a “Collectors’ Passion” auction. “This auction is sure to delight all collectors, dealers and institutions alike,” said John Nye, the president of Nye & Company Auctioneers. “The depth and breadth of the merchandise provides opportunities for bidders at a wide range of price points. We invite everyone to come to the public exhibition and auction.” “We encourage enthusiasts to cross the river, bridges and tunnels while in New York for Americana Week to come see our diverse sale,” said Andrew Holter of Nye & Company Auctioneers. “It will be led by the private collection of Dr. Andrew and Ziva Dahl.” Dr. Dahl, an Ivy Leaguetrained ophthalmologist, and his wife, Ziva, are avid travelers and collectors of antiques. Over a period of decades they have compiled a diverse group of objects acquired from top dealers, as well as numerous auction houses. These items exemplify various geographic regions, forms and periods. Their fine collection is certain to spark spirited bidding. Highlights will include New England case furniture, such as a Chippendale mahogany slant-front desk attributed to John Townsend (Newport, R.I., circa 1780-90), a Chippendale cherrywood dressing table (Colchester, Conn., circa 1760-75), a Chippendale inlaid cherrywood chest of drawers (circa 1705) and a Federal McIntireSchool recamier couch (Salem, Mass., circa 1800). English furniture from the Dahl collection will include a mid-18th-century George III mahogany kneehole desk and an early 18th-century Queen Anne walnut corner chair. Artwork from the Dahls will include a painting of Kosciusko’s “Monument at West Point in New York” attributed to Samuel Lancaster Gerry and an unsigned 19th-century Hudson River School landscape painting. The auction will also feature a nice selection of folk art from various prominent collectors, such as a late 19th-or early 20th-century miniature folk art chest of
