Conestoga Auction Company of the Hess Auction Group in Manheim, Pa., held an eclectic cataloged multi-consignor sale on Dec. 3 that included a large collection of early Pennsylvania German textiles. “There will be more installments from this collection,” stated John Hess following the sale. Needlework cross stitch decorated show (hand) towels and samplers were among the more common forms of Pennsylvania German textiles. Pennsylvania

German women of all denominations practiced sewing. Much of the work in this sale was created by Pennsylvania Mennonites in the southeastern part of the state, primarily Lancaster County, and were reflective of Germanic cultural traditions blended with Anglo influences. Most dated to the first half of the 19th century and overall were in good condition.

This hand colored CDV of the 3rd N.J. battle flag has been colored in a red (almost purple) and blue and has a tear in the middle of the stars. The 3rd N.J. Vols is visible in one of the stripes. It brought $825.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Another Look At Some Of The Hottest Collectible Collecting Categories Also, Words Of Caution To Ring In The New Year By Shawn Surmick As we enter 2017, there are several popular collecting categories poised to make exponential growth this year and beyond. Most of these markets should come as no surprise to regular readers of this column. Listed below are some of the hottest collecting categories that are sure to be on fire in 2017, along with my commentary on each. As always, feel free to disagree, but do so with caution. 5. Vintage pinball machines from 1975 or later. Electronic pinball machines have become the proverbial “blue chip” investment of the vintage coin-operated world. With prices still rising on an ongoing basis, finding a near mint condition example of a specific machine has become a frustrating experience in both futility and patience. The lack of supply has created a seller’s market, where machines that were selling for just under $2,000 less than five years ago are now selling for record prices. Note to would-be collectors and investors: This field is for experienced and knowledgeable collectors only, and novice enthusiasts should proceed with caution. If you find a vintage machine at a great price but it needs a lot of work and repair, your lucky buy is actually a money pit.

3. Pokemon related cards, collectibles, and games. In 2016, Nintendo scored a massive hit with the mobile phone game called “Pokemon Go.” The game became a media darling and mass market hit and propelled Nintendo’s stock to almost double its share price. Nintendo capitalized on the release of “Pokemon Go” by enhancing its popular Pokemon collectible card game with the release of XY Evolutions and had a wellcalculated hit with the dual release of “Pokemon Sun and Moon” on its Nintendo 3DS handheld system. Vintage “Magic: The Collectors and investors

need to use caution, as a lot of speculation is occurring on newer Pokemon products with a lot of collectors hoarding sealed products. A better strategy may be to go after the first edition of the card game. Holding rare cards graded PSA 10 or even BGS 9.5 may prove profitable, as there is much less supply of vintage product than of current over produced product. Still, it may be best to go after both contemporary and vintage products in tandem. Just don’t over-hoard modern era products. 2. Vintage Nike Air sneakers. As a kid growing up in the 1990s, I never thought my vintage Nike Air sneakers would have been worth saving. Unfortunately, that is exactly what is fueling the market for unworn vintage sneakers from yesteryear. Now stores that cater to vintage Nike Air shoes are popping up in high-end shopping malls across the country, and people are paying thousands of dollars or more to get a limited pair of sneakers from yesterday. Expect this trend to continue with some high-end auction houses taking a close look at how best to enter the secondary market and capitalize on this growing trend. Male collectors have now found the equivalent of luxury hand bag collecting for women. Hermes better watch out!

Investors should focus on third-party graded and certified items. Rare figures like the infamous Blue Snaggletooth figure and the Vinyl Caped Jawa figure have seen double digit gains almost each and every year since Disney acquired the “Star Wars” franchise from George Lucas. Meanwhile, “Revenge of the Jedi” proof cards have nearly tripled in value and now serve as a status symbol of the movie that would become “Return of the Jedi.” Hint to collectors and investors alike: Look at the vintage Kenner Micro Collection and some of the obscure Power of the Force mail-away promo coins for undervalued deals. These items have yet to experience the same metamorphic growth as their vintage toy counterparts. Avoid prototype and preproduction items unless you possess the knowledge to know and understand what

With Nintendo’s new video game system, aptly named “Switch,” ready to release in March of this year, expect demand for vintage Nintendo games and franchises to increase. Unfortunately, most of the company’s popular games are now readily available for download onto newer Nintendo systems. As such, I urge all collectors and enthusiasts of vintage video games to err on the side of caution and think about the long-term validity of vintage video games. With a flick of a “switch” (pun intended), most of these games will be readily made to play on any newer video game console at a fraction of the cost of owning the original game. There is tremendous opportunity in vintage products that contain limited reserved list cards that can never be printed again. Buying sealed product from this era is a foolproof investment as long as the would-be buyer can resist the urge to open the sealed boxes in search of that valuable rare card. Hint to investors: Newer product should almost always be kept sealed, or consider only buying the rarest cards in the best condition possible. Vintage cards should be purchased graded and certified by either PSA or BGS. Never buy a highend vintage card that is not graded and authenticated, as fakes and reproductions exist.

Meanwhile, well-made counterfeit products continue to put pressure on all but the hardest to find and exclusive minifigures. Best to use caution and get out now if you are heavily involved in this market. This list is based on my own observations, as I accurately collect and invest in all of these markets. While some will disagree with my findings, it should be noted that I may be more cautious than most collectors, as I don’t like the idea of losing money, especially when it can easily be avoided just by focusing on the long-term. There were 29 linen decorated towels. The average hand towel measures roughly 16-by-58-inches. They were often hung on a door. Many lots had publication history. The late Ellen Gehretâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;This Is The Way I Pass My Timeâ&#x20AC;? was a Pennsylvania German Society publication from 1984. Pertaining to decorated hand towels, the book remains among the best references on the subject. The items in this sale that were illustrated in the book were credited â&#x20AC;&#x153;Courtesy of Mary Ann McIlnay.â&#x20AC;? Other items in the sale were illustrated and discussed in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Historical Needlework of Pennsylvaniaâ&#x20AC;? by Margaret Schiffer and also â&#x20AC;&#x153;Samplers of the Pennsylvania Germansâ&#x20AC;? by Tandy and Charles Hersh. The latter was published in 1991 by the Pennsylvania German Society and ranks among the best treatments on the topic. A fine towel done by Mary Nissley of Rapho Township, Lancaster County, in 1841, was the first item in the collection sold. It was in good condition with minor wear and realized $1,652, selling to a phone bidder. A comparable example with similar motifs was done by Fanny Nissley of Rapho Township and was illustrated

in Clarke Hessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mennonite Arts.â&#x20AC;? It (along with Fannyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sampler) are in the collection of Pennsylvania German scholars Dr. and Mrs. Donald M. Herr. According to local historian and author Hess, the domestic scene of two ladderback chairs, a stretcher-base table, and a wine set (done on both Mary and Fannyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s towels) was a popular motif among Mennonites of northwestern Lancaster County. Mary also included the popular â&#x20AC;&#x153;OEHBDEâ&#x20AC;? motif, which is a stylized heart surrounded by those initials standing for â&#x20AC;&#x153;O Edel Hertz Bedunk Dein Ende.â&#x20AC;? The common Mennonite saying translates to â&#x20AC;&#x153;O Noble Heart, Consider Your End.â&#x20AC;? Mennonite wedding handkerchiefs and decorated aprons are both rare forms. It is believed most handkerchiefs are of Lancaster County origin and date to the end of

Americana And Political Auction Results Soar Buttons, Banners, And A Cigar Store Indian All Excel Frenzied bidding drove the return on an early hand-carved American tobacconist cigar store Indian to $150,000 to claim top-lot honors in Heritage Auctions’ Americana and Political Auction on Dec. 3 in Dallas, Texas.
