Holiday “Surprises” At Bertoia’s $1.8 Million Auction What’s an auctioneer’s first clue that a sale is going to be a barnburner? “Running out of catalogues,” answered Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia, referring, in particular, to the company’s Nov. 13 through 15 Holiday Surprises auction, which grossed $1,867,000. “It was the diversity and quality of the goods that caused the rush on catalogs. With every passing week in the run-up to the sale, more and more catalogs were leaving the gallery. I knew we would run out, which is very unusual for us because we always make sure we publish a bumper supply. So that no one would be disappointed, in the two weeks prior to the auction, if someone called about a particular category in the sale, we would mail them a color copy of the catalog section that interested them,” said Bertoia. Inside the thick, full-color catalog with a cheery Santa-in-sleigh toy on the cover were 2,240 lots of premiumquality toys, trains, banks, dolls, bears, games, doorstops and holiday antiques. And there were scores of buyers for each and every one of the categories. “Everything was in demand, but European handpainted tin was exceptionally strong,” said Bertoia. “I would say one-fourth of it was shipped back to Europe

“Miniature World in White Gold: Meissen Porcelain by Johann Joachim Kaendler” is a new exhibition exploring the career of this innovative porcelain modeler and runs through January of 2017, at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Conn. The exhibition, assembled from the museum’s collections, showcases a broad
range of finely detailed porcelain figures created by Kaendler over his 44 years as a modeler at the Meissen Porcelain Factory in Germany. The exhibition is organized by Vanessa Sigalas, Dangremond Resarch Fellow for European Art and Decorative Arts at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Johann Joachim Kaendler was one of the most visionary artists in the history of porcelain, creating more than 2,000 models over the

A Meier (German) lithographed tin Father Christmas penny toy sold for $5,015. Although diminutive, the penny toys that crossed the auction block required many pennies, indeed, to be purchased during the opening session. A German Meier lithographed tin Father Christmas penny toy more than fulfilled expectations when it sold for $5,015. Cast iron performed well. Lot 750 was a circa-1929 Arcade “White” delivery panel van with advertising for “Peerless Cleaning & Dyeing” and sped past its $10,000-$12,000

estimate to settle at $21,240. Lot 860, a Hubley castiron Santa in sleigh pulled by two reindeer and measuring 16.5-inches long dashed away for $8,260. Leading the Christmas antiques was Lot 2172, a large and impressive key-wind nodding Santa with composition body, fur beard and hair, and fur-trimmed coat. Against an estimate of $4,000-$6,000, the holiday gift-giver delivered a winning bid of $11,210. Not far behind in the price stakes, Lot 2170, a Santa in loofah sleigh pulled by a proud, glass-eyed reindeer realized $8,850. It had a $4,000-$7,000 estimate. “These are prices we had not seen in the marketplace for years,” said Bertoia. The interest level was tremendous. The three-day event attracted a sizable crowd to the gallery plus hundreds of absentee and phone bidders, and 2,800 online participants through LiveAuctioneers. “People are very comfortable bidding with us. Our reputation

course of his career and consistently testing the limits of porcelain as an artistic medium. Kaendler was one of the first artists to use porcelain as a sculpting material rather than as a surface for painted decoration. His designs and figures, more detailed and realistic than any earlier creations, were essential for the development of porcelain as an independent art form in Europe. “Miniature World in White Gold” will feature dozens of Kaendler’s works including his animals, crinoline figures, and court and peasant figures. The formula for hard-paste porcelain, which originated in China centuries earlier, was not discovered in Europe until the early 18th century, only decades before Kaendler became a modeler at Meissen. The material was as valuable as gold during his lifetime, when dinner services and figurines were commissioned by aristocrats to ornament extravagant banquet and dining tables. While they initially served as table decoration and conversation pieces, porcelain figures soon became collectibles themselves and were displayed in

Other highlights on the first day included an 1894 Morgan silver dollar graded PCGS PR64 ($4,500); a Russian silver-gilt cloisonné basket by Petr Fariseev ($2,300), and a set of 15 antique electric starshaped Christmas lights which realized $1,200. Day two began with furniture, which featured a circa 1780 Pennsylvania Chippendale fall-front desk which drew heaving bidding from the floor, Internet, and phones before hammering to a phone bidder for $4,000. A Gothic Revival tall-case clock retailed by J.E. Caldwell hammered for $4,100. In Asian arts, a Chinese Qing rock crystal covered urn sold for $4,500, and a trio of Chinese famille rose plaques also brought $4,500. Multiple fine art pieces sold well. Three paintings by Russian-American artist David Burliuk (1882-1967) were offered including “The Wizard” ($3,400), “Couple in Sled” ($1,500) and the top lot of the auction, “Winter’s Tales” ($24,000) which is purported to be the last painting ever completed by Burliuk before his death in 1967. Bidding drew international interest. Also garnering international attention was a Continental School portrait of a young Grigory Grigorievich Gagarin (1810-93), Russian painter, Major

investor to stay one step ahead of the Lego Group and attempt to rationalize what sets may be reproduced by Lego at any time. The Lego Star Wars line has been frequently targeted by the Lego Group who is now getting wise to just how popular and valuable recently discontinued sets have become. A prime example of this is the Lego Star Wars AT-AT Walker. The set continues to see a rerelease every few years due to being both an iconic Star Wars vehicle and an extremely popular set. With each new release Lego continues to add updated versions of its popular minifigures while making each set even more realistic than the last. This has caused some investors to proceed with caution when buying multiples of most iconic sets in bulk to sell later. Another ongoing issue with most Lego investors has been competing with Lego themselves. Back in 2008, Lego released one of their most popular Lego Star Wars sets. At $399.99, the Lego Death Star (set number 10188) was bound to be an instant classic. Just shy of 4,000 pieces, the set came with well over 20 rare minifigures and was hailed by investors as one of the holy grail Lego sets that would be a can’t miss investment opportunity. Unfortunately, Lego decided to keep the set in production long past its usual two-year life span and the Death Star became known as a running joke in most Lego investment circles as speculators started to refer to it as the “Life Star” due to Lego’s refusal to retire the set.

On Aug. 22, 2015 an article appeared in the United Kingdom news report known as The Telegraph titled “Lego A Better Investment than Shares and Gold.” As someone who routinely searches the Internet for interesting news stories it didn’t take long for me to discover the article. It also didn’t take Internet forums devoted to toy collecting long to report on the article either. The article summarizes how the prices of a lot of recently released Lego sets based on popular licensed properties have been steadily increasing. Thanks in part to Lego’s own unique business model which ensures that existing sets are discontinued (i.e. retired) to make room for new and exciting products on an ongoing basis many collectors have discovered that Lego can be a great investment. The subject of Lego investing is nothing new as regular readers of my column should already known my thoughts on the topic. Still, as a Lego collector and enthusiast I no longer get upset over these kinds of articles. Back in late December of 2012, USA Today published a similar article titled “Lego Investors Make Hot Profits Brick by Brick.” The article has been credited with bringing more speculators into the already overcrowded frenzy of Lego investing. Truth be told, there is nothing wrong with any of these articles. Both present a plethora of facts which are well represented. The problem is what they don’t tell you. The Lego Group releases hundreds of Lego sets per year. Knowing what sets to buy and how long to hold them takes a lot of research. Worse still, neither article goes into detail over how much it costs to collect, store, and sell Lego sets. Ebay, the proverbial king of do-it-yourself e-commerce charges hefty seller fees, as does PayPal, the bona fide way to get paid online. Neither article takes into account the costs associated with these fees and how much of a seller’s overall return is eaten up by them. As an
experienced seller on eBay I can assure you that selling on eBay is not cheap. A seller can expect to spend close to 20 to 25 percent on eBay and PayPal fees. These are significant costs that no seller or socalled investor can afford to ignore. Sadly, both articles do just that and choose to ignore those costs. Another cost that most of these articles fail to elaborate on are storage and insurance costs. Lego sets are bulky and in most cases very large. They come in easily damaged cardboard boxes that have to be protected and maintained in a climate controlled environment. Most of the exclusive sets that these articles mention come in extremely large and fragile boxes and cost several hundred dollars each. Almost every Lego collector expects the condition of the box to be in C8 or better condition. Almost every Lego collector and investor I know of has to rent climate controlled storage space at a significant cost and carry collectible insurance on the items they buy and sell. Ever price insurance on collectibles while being classified as a dealer? None of these mandatory costs are even alluded to in either article. Still, assuming one wants to invest in Lego and take advantage of these so called gains, what does the average investor buy? As stated, Lego releases hundreds of various sets each year and the rereleasing of previously discontinued sets has started to become quite common. It has been difficult for even the most experienced Lego

Finally, in late 2015 it was just announced that the set would be retiring in early 2016. This caused many investors to sour on the profit potential of a set that has been in production for almost eight long years. Some incredibly patient investors have even reportedly been stockpiling the $399.99 set in multiple quantities since it was first released. You have to wonder about the mindset of someone who stockpiles multiple of this large expensive set and pays to store them just waiting for the day that the set is no longer in production. Unfortunately for speculators and investors alike, the announcement of the discontinuation of the Death Star appears to be short-lived as the Lego Group has already announced a new version that will launch sometime in late 2016. Such is the potential risk of modern day Lego investing. There are no guarantees and would-be investors are urged to use extreme caution. Today, the field of Lego investing is extremely crowded. New investors face steady competition from professional and experienced full-time sellers. Retail stores like the Lego Store itself and big box retailers like Toys “R”Us have had to deal with an onslaught of newbies entering the field thanks to articles like the two I mentioned above. Unfortunately, Lego investing is not guaranteed and the returns tend to favor high profile, well-funded resellers who can afford to buy sale priced sets in bulk along with having the experience and the ability to know what to buy. Sadly, this realization won’t stop the multitude of people who read these articles from trying their

depleted forests, and this caused the migration of humans all over the globe. We never got to ask about what he thought were the rarest wafer iron designs coming from Pennsylvania foundries, which was our interest, but we did learn about the movement of populations across the globe because of the use of wood in making iron. That was Joel. He shared knowledge in every conversation. We never knew where the conversation would lead. I happen to know what moment of personal history formed Joel’s quirky attachment to cast iron cookware. Back in his hippie days, he lived with a group of people on a barge between New Jersey and New York City. The barge suffered a devastating fire, and all was lost. All except one cast iron frying pan. He took it as a sign for his life’s mission, to collect iron pots. That’s how it began. And the rest is legendary. To those of us who loved him, Joel Schiff represented the intense passion of the antique collecting movement. There are no immediate plans for a memorial service, and he will be buried in a Boston area cemetery by relatives in Massachusetts, according to his former wife Ella Schiff. Condolences may be sent in care of Ella Schiff at 1110 Garrett Circle, Blairsville, Ga., 30512. A future memorial celebration of his life is planned. If readers have stories to share, they may email them to Arlene Rabin at arjw9299@verizon.net.

for and whatever the budget, the Grist Mill has so much to choose from and the friendly and helpful dealers will be happy to help shoppers find that perfect Valentine’s Day present. They offer a 20 percent discount on items priced at $6 or more every day and 25 percent off a special category each week. Shoppers can sign up for email notices at gristmillantiques.com to be the first to know about weekly specials. The Grist Mill Antiques Center invites shopgoers to participate in their monthly Scavenger Hunt, which takes place the last Wednesday of each month. Lists are given out at 5 p.m., and the person who finds the most items on the list by 8 p.m., will win a prize. Light refreshments are served. It may be the middle of winter, but spring isn’t far away, so be sure and mark the calendar for the semi-annual Flea Market on Sunday, April 17. There will be plenty of treasures and fantastic bargains to be had. This multi-dealer shop is located at 127 Hanover Street, Pemberton, N.J., and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. each Wednesday.

Valentine’s Day is closer than one may think and love is in the air. This centuries old holiday is celebrated by millions of people and boosts the economies of many businesses. An old tale is rumored that the holiday was named after Valentine, a priest living in third century Rome, who defied the Emperor Claudius by performing marriages in secret for his young soldiers. Discovered, Valentine was thrown into prison to await execution. While there, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and reportedly sent her a letter before his death, signed, “From your Valentine. This expression is still widely used today. It isn’t too early to start looking for a special gift for that special someone. The current showcase at the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., is filled with items that will impress even those with the most discerning tastes. Heart-shaped dishes and trinket boxes, Valentine’s Day postcards, dazzling jewelry, Fenton vases, and other vintage collectibles are just some of the treasures to be found. Whether shopping for a sweetheart, a sister, a mother, a daughter or a friend, show them that they are one-of-a-kind by giving them something unique that can’t be found in the big box stores. A matchless gift is sweeter than candy and lasts longer than flowers. Whomever one is shopping
The antiquing community lost one of its icons when Joel Schiff unexpectedly passed away. He was 72. Schiff’s passion for cast iron and wrought iron cookware is legendary among antiquing circles. Anyone who has ever shopped Brimfield, Madison Bouckville, Kutztown, or Adamstown, knows Schiff by his familiar “cast iron cookware, per chance? and “Waffle irons, wafer irons, anything unusual or rare? Showgoers would also know Schiff because even with one leg and crutches, he was the fastest across any field or show floor. And in his 70s, he still carried a backpack full of iron, first aid, lunch, and desserts for all his friends. He was a generous and passionate collector. The legendary T-shirt he wore featured rare items that he was seeking. Schiff was active in the Griswold and Cast Iron Cookware Association, the Wagner and Griswold Society, and KOOKS (Kollectors of Old Kitchen Stuff). He resided in New York City and travelled the whole country in pursuit of his obsession. And obsession it was. He sought every piece of antique and vintage iron, cast and wrought, that had to do with cooking or eating. That included material from the 17th century up to the 20th century. He especially sought extreme rarities in design or function, from anywhere on earth. Joel was not only a great friend, but a great teacher. Sometimes he would start talking about a subject, and one hour later we would not recall what the original question was, but we always learned something about the history of mankind, through the lens of iron. One special memory was when I invited Schiff to speak to our Antiques Dealers Association of Berks County (Pa.) meeting, the subject being cast and wrought iron cookware. After a few hours, a few people having nodded off, he finally realized that he would never make it to the 18th or 19th century before running out of time. He spoke about the entire history of ironmaking in the ancient world, and how the iron age

Martyn Gregory Gallery To Hold First Exhibition In New York commemorates the early years of direct trade between the United States and China. It also records a brief period when seven different nations (Great Britain, America, France, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain) were all actively trading at Canton, the only Chinese port at which Western trade was permitted. Another large and wellpainted harbor painting that will be in the selling exhibition is “Hong Kong from the Harbour” by an unknown Chinese artist, late 1850s (oilon-canvas, 26-by-44-inches). In it, the island of Hong Kong is pictured before the erection of the signaling station on the Peak in 1861. Less than 20 years had elapsed since the British hoisted the Union Jack on the shore of Hong Kong Island, but in the intervening period, most of the waterfront between Western District and East Point had been developed. Several well-known structures are included in the landscape, including the tower of St. John’s Cathedral, which can be seen above the smaller paddlesteamer, with Government House uphill to its right. In the harbor, a great variety of vessels can be seen, including a coastal junk, Tanka boats operated by blue-robed women, covered hulks (superannuated sailing ships converted for use as a naval base), small sidewheelers and three-masted sailing ships flying the flags of Britain, France and the United States. A curiosity of the painting is the presence, towards the right of the harbor, of a junk-rigged vessel with additional jib and topsails in the Western fashion. Yet another painting, “A Panoramic View of the Bund at Shanghai, with a Regatta in Progress,” an oil-on-canvas measuring 16.75-by-55.75inches by an unknown Chinese artist (1849-51), is apparently the earliest detailed view of the Shanghai Bund. The picture, which is known in several versions, would have been executed no earlier than July 1849, when the British consulate was first established on this site (far right) and 1851, by which time Jardine, Matheson had replaced the Chinese-roofed building seen here (to the left of the British consulate) by a larger structure with a Western-style roof. Chinese export portraits of Western visitors to China and painted in the Western manner. The “Portrait of William Read” of Philadelphia by the Cantonese artist known as Spoilum (circa 1774-1805), an oil-on-canvas measuring 24by-20-inches, is an outstanding example of this artist’s distinctive work. The sitter, William Read (1767-1846), made several voyages to China. His father, George Read, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. “Trampling Down Loose Tea in Tea Chests at Canton,” is a gouache by a late 18thcentury unknown Chinese artist and measures 12.5-by10-inches and is another highlight of the exhibit. This painting is one of a set of eight scenes illustrating the production of tea from the earliest stages, picking tea in the mountains, to the late stage
seen here, in which dark-suited Westerners sample the tea as animated Chinese figures press down the tea within the chests in which it will be exported to the West. An unusual and early pair of suave Chinese women holding long tobacco pipes, one shown with a dog and the

A “Pair of Paintings of Chinese Women accompanied by Pipes and Pets” by a late 18th-century Chinese artist (gouache-on-paper, each 31.5-by-23.25-inches) depicts in each scene a woman beside a latticework shutter, as if at a window, with flowering shrubs and birds beyond. A foremost expert in Chinese Export paintings, The Martyn Gregory Gallery of London, will exhibit 70 of these paintings (also known as China Coast or China Trade paintings), from Thursday, Jan. 21, through Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Mallett, located at 929 Madison Ave. (at 74th Street), Third Floor, in New York City. An exhibitor since 1990 at the annual Winter Antiques Show in New York, this new show, titled “China Observed,” will be the gallery’s first independent exhibition in the city. These highly detailed works by Cantonese artists were bought by ships’ officers and merchants who came to trade at Canton (modern Guangzhou) in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Also on view will be paintings by Western artists who travelled to the East. “New York has been one of the principal centers of the China Trade ever since America won its independence from Britain,” said Martyn Gregory, “and the city still contains a wealth of China Trade pictures and keen collectors. We have always enjoyed coming to New York, and we look forward to meeting old friends and new enthusiasts in our new venue. We are bringing with us the finest collection of China Trade paintings to be found on the market at the present time, and perhaps for the foreseeable future.” Among the most spectacular of the paintings by Chinese artists who dominate “China Observed” are detailed scenes of the ports visited by the Westerners: notably Canton, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. One such example is “The Hongs of Canton” by an unknown Chinese artist, circa 1804. This oil-on-canvas measuring 32-by-50-inches is a large, impressive and finely detailed view of the hongs, or “factories,” at Canton that

A Short Exploration Of Jewelry Through The Eras: 18th- To Mid-20th Century Jewelry throughout time has been highly valued and typically mirrors the popular styles, important events, and advances taking place in the world. History, stories, and sentiment can be conveyed from a single piece of jewelry. Each era in jewelry history has unraveled exciting new trends and innovations, while sometimes revisiting styles of the past and offering unique revivals. Have you ever come across a piece of vintage jewelry and wondered when it might date from? The time period in which the piece of jewelry was made can give light to its special history and also plays a role in its value. This article focuses on the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and Modern jewelry eras with approximate start and end dates noted for each time period. The Georgian Era (1714-1837) The people of the Georgian Era loved all things rich and royal. Jewelry was typically worn only by the wealthy, which was represented in the sumptuous and rich aspects of the pieces. During this time period, handcrafted molds and 18-carat or higher gold was used. The Georgian Era introduced the trend of having daytime jewelry and nighttime jewelry. Pearls and shell were common in the more demure daytime jewelry, while the evening brought out grandiose and luxurious accessories. Symmetry and opulent gold work is prevalent in Georgian jewelry. Jewelry from this time period is becoming increasingly rare and is highly sought after by collectors.
children’s teeth made into different jewelry pieces, also showing the sentimental side of jewelry. In an era where private things were often not discussed, the Victorians turned to symbolism and secret language through the use of jewelry. For example, a piece of jewelry with colored gemstones could be set in a pattern to spell out a secret message. This era also brought about the love of earthier colored gemstones and pebbles because of the Queen’s love of all things Scottish. Common Materials: Agate, Garnets, Pave Set Turquoise, Black Enamel, Moonstones, Rose Gold, Seed Pearls, Onyx, Amethyst, Hair Popular Motifs: Buckles, Thistles, Acorns and Oak Leaves, Ivy, Buckles, Star and Moon, Horseshoes, Dragons, Flowers, Serpents, Acanthus Leaves, Acrostic Jewelry, Swallows Style: Symbolic, Romantic, Sentimental, Secretive, Gothic, Vibrant, Fanciful The Edwardian Era (1901-15) The Edwardian Era is considered to have begun in 1901 when Queen Victoria’s son, Edward VII, began his reign as king. The Art Nouveau movement (meaning “New Art) occurred during this time frame. Art Nouveau jewelry designers often looked toward nature to inspire their mystical creations. Edwardian Era jewelry pieces often contain symbolic motifs, such as stars, moons, animals, and horseshoes (because of King Edward’s love of horse racing). Necklaces from this time period include sautoirs, lavaliers, and festoon
passage of the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote. The term Art Deco was birthed from the 1925 Word’s Fair Exposition in Paris, France, the “Internationale de Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Moderns. Art Deco was gleaned from part of the event’s title and is subsequently used to describe a specific decorative style featuring geometric shapes, sleek lines, and colorful motifs with a bold and modern feel. The flowing nature-inspired designs of the previous Edwardian Era were quickly replaced with Art Deco’s streamlined, highly geometric designs, which were influenced by technology and industrial advancements. Common Materials: Platinum, White Gold, Diamonds, Marcasite, Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies, Synthetic Gemstones, Aquamarines, Cultured Pearls, Colored Glass, Camphor Glass, Enamel, Opals, Black Onyx Popular Motifs: Filigree, Geometric Shapes, Abstract Designs, Flowers Style: Elegant, Delicate, Streamlined, Symmetrical, Egyptian Revival The Modern Era (1940s-60s) The mid-20th century saw the growth of the middle class, and with this prosperity came large statement pieces, jewelry sets (often referred to as a
parure), and showy “cocktail rings. During the 1950s, diamonds’ popularity increased amongst consumers, particularly due to the De Beers “A Diamond is Forever campaign. Designers looked towards nature and animals for inspiration and often incorporated these motifs into jewelry design. They embellished their pieces with colorful rhinestones and artistic textures. The Modernist Art movement inspired “wearable art such as large and abstract free-form jewelry pieces. Common Materials: Beads, Multi-Strands for Necklaces, Lucite, Rhinestones, Pearls, Diamonds, Platinum, Gold Popular Motifs: Animals (Birds, Fish), Abstract Designs, Starbursts, Atomic Motifs, Flowers, Bows Style: Artistic, Flashy, Feminine, Modern, Indulgent, Daring, Whimsical, Bold, Elaborate Signed Jewelry: Miriam Haskell, Trifari, Coro, Boucher, Warner, Renoir, Matisse, Sarah Coventry, Ciner, Lisner, Napier, Monet Vintage and antique jewelry contains a special past. Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, died at the young age of 42, which caused her to go into years of mourning. This tragic loss caused more macabre aspects of jewelry to be introduced. Hair from a loved one’s head was woven into jewelry to keep deceased family members close. The Queen had her

Flow blue is one of my favorite types of transferware, so I had a personal interest in researching this topic. It’s one of the most easily recognized categories of collectibles, with its blurry cobalt blue patterns that range from slightly to heavily blurred. Some pieces may have embossed features or hand-painted gold highlighting, while others are strictly blue and white (or just blue if the pattern is extremely blurry). Dating back to 1830, many potters in Staffordshire, England produced flow blue wares, including some very recognizable names like Meakin, Josiah Wedgwood, and Johnson Brothers. The oldest pieces were primarily ironstone or pearlware, followed by semi-porcelains from the 1880s on. As its popularity grew, other countries began producing flow blue, among which were the U.S., France, Germany, Holland, among others as well. The blurred look of flow blue isn’t accidental. It is created by using a specific type of ceramic and coloring that, together, encourage the cobalt blue to flow beyond the pattern’s borders when fired. In some reproductions, you can see that the blurring is painted on rather than occurring naturally. One simple thing to look for when determining if a piece is a reproduction is an over-all glaze. Authentic old flow blue is completely covered with glaze, including the bottom and the bottom rim on which the piece stands, as well as the inside. Most, if not all, modern reproductions are missing the glaze from at least the bottom rim, if not the entire bottom.
Sometimes you can spot a reproduction by its maker’s mark. For example, old Victoria Ironstone should have a full Royal Arms mark, while a modern Chinese reproduction may have a lion and unicorn mark and is much
simpler looking than the authentic mark. On the other hand, some potters in the late 19th century imitated the Royal Arms mark, but those imitations were not attempts at reproducing the mark. There is a distinct difference. This is why it’s important to know exactly what an authentic Royal Arms mark looks like or to have a photographic reference guide with you. Another thing to look for in original pieces is the word “Ironstone” or “Stoneware,” whereas some m o d e r n reproductions use the term “Iron ware,” a descriptive that was never used in authentic marks. Also, the words “Flow Blue” were never used in antique marks, so if you see the term on the bottom of the
piece, it’s a modern one. A number of patterns have been reproduced since the 1960s, including Touraine and Iris, while other patterns being made in modern times are new and not meant to deceive, like those being produced by Williams-Sonoma and Cracker Barrel, among others. However, there are a number of new flow blue patterns and sets that do have deceptive marks and are being made in China. One thing several of these repros have in common is that they’re missing the word “England” in the mark. This is important to note because some, like Touraine being made in China, are virtually impossible to detect by the pattern alone, and even the Stanley Pottery Co. mark is under the glaze and identical except for “England.” So once the “Made in China” stick-on label is removed, there’s nothing indicating where the piece has been made. Victoria Ware is also being made in China, and some have a telltale pea-green hue in the white areas. As with most collectibles, there’s nothing wrong with buying a modern reproduction as long as it’s being represented correctly and is priced accordingly. All photos are property of the author. At A Glance Signs of a reproduction: 1. “Flow Blue” in the maker’s mark. 2. “Made in China” sticker. 3. Gold decals. 4. Painted “blurring.” 5. Glaze missing from any area.

Heritage Auctions Posts 2015 Results With $860 Million Year Heritage Auctions posted its second highest grossing year in 2015 with total sales of more than $860 million in total prices realized across its auction business as well as its private treaty sales. The company also continued to expand its worldwide presence, opening international offices in Hong Kong and Amsterdam, making consigning and bidding even easier for Heritage’s sizable international clientele. “We still see nothing but upside in most sectors of our business,” said Steve Ivy, CEO of Heritage. “Coins always have and always will be the soul of our business, and overall the market is still quite healthy. Our new international offices allow us to raise our profile as a business while making sure collectors all over the world can access our expertise.” U.S. Coins continue to be Heritage’s largest category, with 2015 auction totals exceeding $254 million. World & Ancient Coins at Heritage realized more than $43 million at auction overall while U.S. Currency held strong, posting more than $36 million total in auction sales.
“When we look beyond our legacy categories in Numismatics and Currency,” said Ivy, “the total prices realized in Sports Memorabilia are the most impressive overall. Our sports department showed growth in every segment, posting especially impressive growth in online-only catalog auctions.”
Overall in 2015, Sports Collectibles auction sales at Heritage grew by 41 percent to more than $42 million, which was by far the highest sales volume by more than double of any auction house dealing in Sports Collectibles. Comics and original Comic Art have posted excellent
results over the last decade, with 2015 continuing that trend. Heritage increased its already dominant Comics auction sales by 10 percent, posting total auction prices realized for the year above $34 million. Heritage’s Fine and Decorative Arts department put together a robust 2015, with more than $39 million in total auction sales realized, powered by Modern, Contemporary, American and Illustration Art sales. Fine Jewelry and Luxury Accessories also combined for a solid year, with more than $26 million in combined auction totals ($15+ million in Jewelry and $11+ million in Luxury Accessories). Other strong performing categories at Heritage for the year included Movie Posters ($7.4+ million), Americana and Political ($5.2+ million), Manuscripts ($5+ million), Rare Books ($4.2+ million) and Nature & Science ($3.3+ million). For more information about Heritage Auctions, and to join and receive access to a complete record of prices realized with full-color, enlargeable photos of each lot, visit www.HA.com.

Annual Sales Exceed $800 Million ❘ 850,000+ Online Bidder-Members
The Original 166th SemiAnnual York Antiques Show and Sale is scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Jan. 29, 30, and 31 at Memorial Hall East located within the York Fairgrounds Complex in downtown York, Pa. This extremely popular event will feature 96 carefully screened exhibitors in room settings offering an impressive and outstanding variety of antiques. According to show manager Melvin L. Arion, the merchandise here will run the full gamut, including 18th and 19th century American and English furniture, American country pieces in original paint, early china and glassware, 18th and 19th century silver, Chinese Export porcelain, antique toys, Oriental carpets, pewter, estate jewelry, quilts, English samplers, and other textiles, early kitchen and fireplace accessories, Navajo rugs, Pueblo pottery, baskets, and Native American artifacts, historic American militaria, and much more. Arion does an exceptional job of making sure the scope of merchandise offered is as broad as possible so nearly any visitor can find a “new” treasure. In addition, all major
credit cards will be accepted. A special event at this show will be a book signing by Gail and Rich Mellin who be selling and autographing copies of their new book “Collecting Canton: In Pursuit of the Best.” Because of York’s small turnover, visitors have the opportunity to get to know the dealers from whom they’re buying. There are a few new participants this time including Blue Dog Antiques of Stafford Springs, Conn.; American Garage of Los Angeles, Calif.; Dover House Antiques of Louisville, Ky.; Collette Donovan of Merrimacport, Mass.; Richard Worth of Chadds Ford, Pa.; and Robert Snyder and Judy Wilson of Mount Joy, Pa. Visiting this show, considered by many to be one of the premier antiquing events in the Mid-Atlantic region, is the perfect antidote to the post-holiday, mid-winter blahs. Show hours both Friday and Saturday will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Show hours on Sunday will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free. The building is smoke-free. Food will be available. Admission will be $10 per person, or $9 with this press
release or a show card. For further information, call Arion at 302-542-3286 or during the show only at 717-718-1097 or visit www.theoriginalyork antiquesshow.com.
