All prices reported include a buyer’s premium. Thomas and Alexandra Fuller of Catasauqua. “This is an exceedingly rare example,” said Stephen Turner of Briggs, “especially in this size and condition. It was relatively unseen on the market and has been in a private collection for decades. As far as we are able to determine, this is the highest prices paid for a koro at auction.” Bidding for the koro was brisk with ten telephone lines (five of which were international), two online platforms, and several absentee bids. The Fuller collection comprised much of the auction and included an excellent assortment of antique furnishings, fine art and sculpture, Asian decorative arts, carpets, silver, fine jewelry, and more from their estate, Willow Brook Farms, known internationally for its horse breeding program and the introduction of the western riding style known as reining. The Fullers’ passion for horse breeding and reigning influenced the furnishing of the country house, which was decorated

collecting. Few people understand it, and folk art snobs see it only as revival craft. And yet, these items often were constructed with the same tools and techniques as the period pieces. Available for relatively small amounts, one could assemble a world-class collection for $100,000 that probably any museum would be envious of. The $100,000 game is great fun to play. For me, it represents the challenge of quality or quantity, age compared to comprehensiveness. And while I doubt that windfall would occur for me, you never really know! Perhaps that long lost aunt will send me her fortune, the kids’ college and the mortgage will be paid, and out of it will come that chance for just one small indulgence.

The third scenario would be to use the money to acquire a collection of 20thcentury decorative arts. It would be a collection of reasonably high quality works that would take a lifetime to acquire on a limited budget, but with the right money could be done very fast, something like Colorado Van Briggle art pottery or Rookwood pottery figurals. Maybe some top end southern pottery by Lanier Meeders and his family. Or one of my darkest desires is to assemble a great study collection of 20th-century craft revival decorative arts reflecting a Pennsylvania German aesthetic. This is a topic that a few others and I see as truly fertile ground for

So, I am sitting in an airport terminal waiting for a long afternoon flight back to Wyoming. When I am in such boring predicaments, I will often think to myself what would I do if I had $100,000 in free and discretionary money to spend only on antiques. What would I do? This is one of those fun games to play that sadly most of us will never convert to reality. Still, it’s fun to play. I end up usually with three big scenarios in my mind. First, would I blow the whole amount on one truly magnificent painting? Now $100,000 will not get you a
Warhol or a da Vinci, but it would get you a pretty nice regionalist painting. Perhaps I would seek out the best of the Weber or Smith families of artists from Philadelphia, a work that would hang on the wall, and I could watch it reveal itself to me by the light of sunset or a cold winter dawn. The second dream would be to acquire really solid untouched examples of a Lancaster or Harrisburg tallcase eight-day brass dial clock, a still-life by John Francis from the mid-19th century, and maybe a pair of really nice three shell Philadelphia Chippendale chairs. A small, but impressive collection of really solid blue ribbon antiques.

Art Glass Lighting Led By A Tiffany “Venetian” Lamp Excel The luxuriant colors and incomparable artistry of Tiffany Studios dominated Morphy’s $1.9 million Fine and Decorative Arts Auction held Dec. 12 at the company’s busy Pennsylvania gallery. Exquisite examples of Tiffany table, floor and hanging lamps, many of them quite rare, were among the stars of the 767-lot sale. An opulent masterpiece from a long-held collection, a ca. 1910 Tiffany “Venetian” lamp with an intricately patterned leaded-glass shade and “jewel” studded giltbronze base, soared to the top of prices realized, earning $104,550 against a pre-sale estimate of $50,000-$80,000. A floral beauty from the virtuosos at Tiffany, a vibrant “Peony” table lamp with signed shade and base, swept past expectations to settle at $70,110. A Tiffany bronze, leaded and stained-glass chandelier in the “October Night” pattern, with a botanical theme of red berries interspersed within an
overall network of branches and leaves, had remained in the same Texas family’s possession for nearly 40 years. They purchased it in 1980 from Lillian Nassau (New York City), the world’s foremost authority on Tiffany lamps. The chandelier changed hands at Morphy’s for $66,000. Milestone Auctions To Host Historic Militaria, Weapons And Firearms Auction Jan. 24 And 25 Sale Led By Omaha Beach D-Day Landing Flag While the hard-fought lessons of war may fade from global memory over time, soldiers’ weaponry and equipment live on as reminders of the heavy toll inflicted by military conflict. The interest in historical firearms, war relics and militaria seems unabated, and the category remains one of the most popular specialties at Milestone Auctions, whose next Firearms and Militaria Sale is slated for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24 and 25, in Willoughby (suburban Cleveland), Ohio. “Collecting historical firearms and militaria is an international hobby. We pick up new bidders with every auction, especially through the internet, which is how many overseas collectors discover us,” said Miles King, coowner of Milestone Auctions. “We ship firearms and militaria all over the world: to Canada, Australia, China, the U.K. and many other European countries. The January sale could be one of our strongest to date. Our firearms expert, Dave Bushing, thinks the gun selection alone might do a million dollars.” Several important flags will fly over the two-day event, including an American flag that bore witness to D-Day and Operation Overlord, the June 6, 1944, Allied invasion of
Normandy. The 48-star flag was flown on the mast of LCI (Landing Craft Infantry) (L)413, which delivered the courageous 115th Infantry Regiment to the shores of Omaha Beach. The LCI was piloted by U.S. Navy Quartermaster Carroll Key Wood, the father of the flag’s consignor. A fascinating and extensive narrative about the flag, including the consignor’s boyhood recollections of his father’s return from WWII with the flag, appears in Milestone’s catalog online. The auction estimate is set at $50,000-$60,000. Another significant D-Day lot is a battle-used “Rupert” dummy paratrooper of the type dropped over Germanoccupied France in the early hours of June 6, 1944. “Although such dummies probably didn’t fool many German defenders, they were undoubtedly a distraction and caused confusion about where Allied troops were located,” said King. The burlap dummy, which was made to be weighted with sand, is estimated at $6,000-$9,000. Rare WWII Nazi memorabilia in the sale includes medals, uniforms, helmets and headgear; boots, flags, numerous knives, daggers, swords and combat implements; and miscellaneous
souvenir items. A Nazi German Heer (Army) general’s ID’d tunic with a decorative collar and epaulets and a handembroidered patch depicting an eagle holding a swastika is expected to make $4,000$6,000. A 1939 Nazi German Knight’s Cross, made by Godet, is marked with a relief swastika and suspended from its original red, white and black ribbon. It will be estimated at $8,000-$10,000. An extremely rare 35-star silk guidon saw military service in the American Civil War and comes to auction from a This Omaha Beach D-Day American Flag flown on the mast of LCI (Landing prominent Chicago family with Craft Infantry) (L)-413, which brought ashore the valiant 115th Infantry an extensive military backRegiment on June 6, 1944, comes with extensive provenance and will be ground. “The 35-star flag is the only flag whose star count estimated at $50,000-$60,000. falls squarely within the active
period of the Civil War,” noted King. “They’re considered very scarce because of the limited time they were allowed to fly, due to the secession of West Virginia from Virginia.” It will be estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Dave Bushing selected two of the auction’s Civil War-era guns for special mention. The first is an exceptional, unfired .52-caliber Sharps (Hartford, Conn.) Model 1863 military rifle, made in 1865 and of a type ordered to outfit U.S. Volunteers. “This gun is simply outstanding,” stated Bushing. “If it weren’t for a couple of minor age freckles, you would swear it was made in the last couple of years.
