Somerset County “school” of cabinetmakers by the Allegheny and Laurel mountains near Johnstown are highly sought after. However, another distinctive body of work (mostly boxes) were made, very likely in Somerset County, by a yet-to-be identified artist. The work has elaborate incised design work, and the maker used a compass and straight edge to lay out the patterns in grids. The two main designs are checkerboards and diamonds. Another design includes crescent/floral-like arches resembling tulips and also half circles. Red, yellow, and dark green are the common color choices. A group of around one dozen paint-decorated boxes are known, and although well-recognized throughout the folk art community, very little is known about the body of work. A very small (comb-box size) wooden paint-decorated wall box example from this group was brought to Carey by a picker who found it in Central City, a small town near Johnstown. The arched top box with red, yellow, dark green diamond inscribed pattern was heavily worn and possibly never had a lid. It sold to the trade for $6,500. A related hanging corner cupboard sold for $19,500 at Karp’s Main Auction Gallery on Feb. 28, 2016, as part of the Jon Graeter collection. That cupboard had previously sold for $20,900 at the Don and Faye Walters sale in 1986 through Sotheby’s. One of the finest examples of the group is a lidded wall box with arched top with the same color scheme but in inscribed checkerboard pattern as opposed to diamond pattern. This example is dated “1841” with initials “CH” and reads on lid “Chrisdina Hoffman, jahr 1841.” As of yet,

“Now And Forever: The Art Of Medieval Time” conceptualized history, and conceived of the afterlife. It brings together more than 55 calendars, Bibles, chronicles, histories, and a 60-foot genealogical scroll. They include depictions of monthly labors, the marking of holy days and periods, and fantastical illustrations of the hereafter. The exhibition opens Friday, Jan. 26, and continues through Sunday, April 29. “Artists of the medieval period could render the most common of daily activities with transcendent beauty while also creating a strange, often frightening, afterlife,” said Colin B. Bailey, director of the Morgan Library and Museum. “Their work mirrored the era’s

intricate mix of temporal, spiritual, and ancient methods for recording the passage of time. The elaborate prayer books, calendars, and other items in the exhibition provide a rich visual history of a world at once familiar and foreign, from the seasonal work of farmers that would not look unusual in today’s almanacs to apocalyptic visions of eternity that make Hollywood’s futuristic films appear tame.” The Morgan Library and Museum, formerly the Pierpont Morgan Library, is a museum and research library located at 225 Madison Ave. at East 36th Street in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

The Morgan Library And Museum Explores The Medieval World’s Fascinating Approach To The Passage Of Time Before the appearance of the clock in the West around the year 1300, medieval ideas about time were simultaneously simple and complex. Time was both finite for routine daily activities and unending for the afterlife; the day was divided into a fixed set of hours, whereas the year was made up of two overlapping systems of annual holy feasts. Perhaps unexpectedly, many of these concepts continue to influence the way we understand time, seasons, and holidays into the 21st century. Drawing upon the Morgan’s rich collection of illuminated manuscripts, “Now and Forever: The Art of Medieval Time” explores how people in the Middle Ages told time,

This fall, I became intrigued by the idea of wearing vintage wristwatches. While cleaning out a box, I found a pretty wonderful Longines watch that I had bought some years ago. I started wearing it and got lots of comments. That got me thinking and then hunting on eBay for additional wristwatches. In my hunt, I learned a great deal about vintage wristwatches and have found that they really are quite the fashion statement. Today, watches are not about telling time (we have phones to do that) as much as they are a fashion statement. So whereas the great limitation of vintage watches was that they had to be wound daily, now that is a moot point.

The other point is that modern watches for men are extremely big. Sorry for this subjective call, but I am just not sure why any man needs a watch the size of Wonder Woman’s bracelet or a chronograph that can be used on Mt. Everest and in the ocean— hardly necessary for most of us. So, as someone who likes small watches, vintage is a far better alternative to the gauntlets of time. How do you begin starting to collect and wear vintage watches? First, decide what you like, both in terms of period and style. Don’t worry about value or brand yet, just decide what period you like. I love watches from the 1920s and 1930s—classic, Deco and beautiful. But, that said, I just purchased a really wonderful 1950s Moderne watch that I dearly love.

Second is to learn a bit about the makers. I have always been partial to Hamilton that were produced in Lancaster, Pa. In reading about Hamilton, I learned that collectors value them today because of both the quality of the work and that they are very affordable. Watch companies had different grades of movements. In the case of Hamilton, even their lower grades were of lasting quality. And that brings me to the key point. I am buying vintage watches to wear and enjoy. This means that I may crack a crystal or get a non-waterproof case wet. I am not abusing them, but I realize that life comes at you hard sometimes. So like the toy trains that I buy, they are there to be enjoyed and not locked in a safe deposit box or never worn. Some watches are for very dressy occasions, and others are for

Major Historic Military And Firearms Auction Scheduled For Jan. 27 At Milestone A panoramic overview of America’s wartime history, as defined by the memorabilia of its heroes, allies and most reviled enemies, will be the focal point of Milestone’s Historic Military and Firearms auction on Saturday, Jan. 27. The suburban Cleveland, Ohio, company will present 668 lots of extraordinary rarities, including Adolf Hitler’s personal desk and chair, a large and provocative Komar & Melamid painting titled “Yalta Conference,” and a uniform frock coat that belonged to a Civil War major general. Additional highlights include a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 170V two-door coupe that

An unidentified Civil War major general’s frock coat with straps, velvet collar, buttons and cuffs, manufacturer Evans & Hassall, Philadelphia, will be estimated at $9,000-$11,000. belonged to Nazi SA physician Dr. Rudolf Beuring and 150plus premium-quality antique and vintage firearms, including several with historical provenance. “We believe this will be our most successful auction ever. We’ve recently displayed some of our key auction items

at major gun and militaria shows, and the reaction has been phenomenal. These types of personally owned items simply do not appear at auction, certainly not altogether in one auction,” said Chris Sammet, co-owner of Milestone Auctions. “Collectors of military memorabilia want provenance they can trust, and the provenance that backs this auction’s headliners is ironclad.” Absolutely authentic and with a background that includes a prior sale at the respected Hermann Historica auction house in Germany, a custom-crafted oak and leather desk and chair owned by Adolf Hitler is expected to make as much as $1,000,000. The furniture was given to Hitler in 1929, a gift from Mrs. Elsa Bruckmann (nee Princess Cantacuzene of Romania). The desk and chair were in use at Hitler’s Munich residence and later seized by the U.S. Army. The set is stamped U.S. Property and United States Forces European Theater Headquarters and comes to auction with a signed letter from the Royal Bavarian Court furniture maker Mobelfabrik M. Ballin, addressed to “Herrn Adolf Hitler.” Described in previous media reports as “Hitler’s million dollar desk,” its auction estimate is $100,000-$1 million. Another auction lot that epitomizes the hedonistic Nazi regime’s penchant for luxury and excess is the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 170V two-door coupe that belonged to SA physician Dr. Rudolf Beuring. A scarce and drivable model, and one of only two of its type registered in the United States, this early-production 170V has been inspected by several qualified mechanics

Two 1932 Smith & Wesson matching .38/.44 fixed-sight revolvers, which were the personal property of movie icon John Wayne, with “JW” initials on grips, along with a hand-tooled leather double holster with gold-overlaid, ruby-adorned silver buckles, stirrups, and spurs, will be estimated at $10,000-$20,000. who noted that it contains many hard-to-find parts. It is accompanied by a copy of its original bill of sale, as well as Beuring’s Nazi military profile with swastika stamps, and a copy of his evaluation prepared for Hitler. It has a transferrable Pennsylvania title and is estimated at $40,000-$80,000. The World War II section also includes a Nazi infantry battalion standarte captured

An important collection of 19th-century Smith & Wesson revolvers and other items belonging to whaling ship captain Albert Sherman (1849-1914) of New Bedford, Mass., family provenance, will be estimated at $25,000$35,000.

Adolf Hitler’s custom-made oak and leather desk and chair from his Munich residence, a 1929 gift from Mrs. Elsa Bruckmann (nee Princess Cantacuzene of Romania) accompanied by manufacturer’s hand-signed letter to Hitler advising him of the furniture’s completion, will be estimated at $100,000-$1 million.

than 150 firearms includes the 19th-century Smith & Wesson handguns of whaling captain Albert Sherman (1849-1914), CSA Gen. John Creed Moore’s 1851 Colt revolver, and John Wayne’s silver-grip Smith & Wesson revolvers, holsters and spurs. There are also many Winchester rifles, a Colt boxed King Cobra, 1911 Colts and SA Colts, 1877 and 1862 Gatling guns, Brownings, Remingtons, Mauers, and much more. Edged weapons include 19th-century swords, Tanto daggers, Imperial German swords, an Ames Model 1871 USN Sword, and German hunting swords. The Civil War portion of the sale features two medical staff swords, a surgical set and hospital register a Hernstein cased surgical amputation set, desirable rifles, tintypes and ambrotypes of soldiers Confederate General William L. The extensive grouping, which was brought to the United States by Hassemer’s widow and son, includes his fourbutton tropical tunic, trousers, Luftwaffe tropical belt and buckle, pilot’s badge, medals, goggles, compass, flight scarf, wartime photo album, and many other flight-related items, est. $15,000-$20,000. Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Names Ghislain d’Humières To Oversee Its Core Operations As part of a streamlining of its leadership team, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has named Ghislain d’Humières as its executive director and senior vice president, core operations, a newly created position that will report to President and CEO Mitchell B. Reiss. In this new role, d’Humières will carry out the vision of Reiss and the foundation’s board of trustees to attract new audiences, engage and entertain guests and instill a lifelong love of Colonial Williamsburg and its enduring role in the American story. D’Humières will oversee the collections, conservation and museums division and Colonial Williamsburg’s education, research and historical interpretation division, as well as its strategic communications and development divisions. “Colonial Williamsburg’s commitment to history education and the arts is strong,” said Reiss. “We believe that hiring a seasoned arts professional to lead the foundation’s core experience will further enhance our ability to captivate visitors through even

more engaging programming within the Historic Area and the Art Museums. Ghislain’s leadership of day-to-day operations will enable me to foster critical relationships with the community, supporters and other partners to elevate Colonial Williamsburg and its mission to share America’s enduring story.” Most recently the director and CEO of the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Ky., from 2013 to earlier this year, d’Humières oversaw an extensive $60 million renovation that transformed the state’s only fine arts museum and enabled it to further expand its audience’s diversity. Previously, he served as the director and chief curator of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma in Norman from 2007-13; he has also held positions at Sotheby’s, Christies, and Heritage Auctions. D’Humières is a former member of the French armed forces and served as aide-decamp to the grand chancelier of the Order de La Libération. He was also an assistant

curator of Paris’ Ordre de La Libération Museum. He is a graduate of the Sorbonne and Paris Nanterre University. “Colonial Williamsburg is a treasure that preserves the birthplace of American democracy and enshrines ideals that still guide the nation and world,” said d’Humières. “I am honored to join this institution, especially amid its reimagination and commitment to engage new and wider audiences. I look forward to sharing the journey with the team, our community, and most of all, our guests.” Among key areas of the foundation that will now be included under d’Humières’ umbrella of responsibilities are major areas of investments in the Campaign for History and Citizenship, the $600 million capital campaign initiated to both reinforce and reimagine Colonial Williamsburg’s role in the 21st century as a leader in history education and historical preservation, which was publicly announced in 2014. One such area is the $41.7-million donor-funded expansion of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, home of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, the oldest continuously operating institution in the United States dedicated solely to the collection, exhibition and preservation of American folk art, now celebrating its 60th anniversary. It is also home to the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, which marked its

30th anniversary in 2015 and features premier examples of British and American fine and decorative arts from 1670-1840. Combined, these diverse and extensive collections play critical roles in Colonial Williamsburg’s goal of engaging audiences with the dramatic story of America’s founding. Under the direction of Ronald L. Hurst, Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation and museums, both the Abby Aldrich and DeWitt Wallace museums will remain open through construction, which began on Oct. 1. It will add 60,000 square-feet to the building for a 22-percent increase in gallery space, as well as significantly improve public access through a new visitor-friendly entrance and other enhancements. It is projected that by late summer 2018 the enlarged space will be completely enclosed and new climate control systems will be fully functioning. Construction is expected to be complete by late 2019. Other vital areas of the foundation’s mission that also are within d’Humières’ area of responsibility include continued reimagination of Historic Area programming with diverse, new character interpretation and technology enhancements, including the Colonial Williamsburg Explorer mobile app; supervising 24 historic trades, modern entertainment and tours, and signature events (such as Grand Illumination and

Ghislain d’Humières. Photo courtesy of Chris Humphries. Fourth of July; the Costume Design Center that crafts and maintains clothing worn by the Historic Area personnel; the Coach and Livestock department that operates the Rare Breeds Program; and the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums. He will also lead the development of compelling outreach programs that reach national and even global audiences, including teacher professional development programs and digital technology initiatives in order for Colonial Williamsburg to continue to support and supplement the teaching of American history and civics in home and school settings. Other duties include directing historical research and training, along with the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library and the Colonial Williamsburg corporate archives, oversight of the departments that conduct archaeological research and care for the more than 60 million archaeological items in the foundation’s collections, and leadership of the departments that preserve 88 original and

roughly 500 reconstructed Historic Area structures, as well as daily care of Historic Area interiors and collection items on display throughout Colonial Williamsburg properties. And also the management of Colonial Williamsburg’s state-of-the-art DeWitt Wallace Collections and Conservation Building, which includes eight discipline-specific labs - archaeological materials, wooden artifacts, instruments and mechanical arts, objects, paintings, paper, textiles and upholstery - as well as the preventive conservation group. There, analysis, examination, treatment, and documentation are performed in strict accordance with the code of ethics of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.
