Charles and Scott Wehrly were recently honored by the PA Auctioneers Association. The father-and-son team of auctioneers Charles and Scott Wehrly of Glen Rock, Pa., were recently honored at the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) Conference held in Harrisburg, Pa. Charles (father) of the Central Chapter of PAA was inducted into the PA Auctioneers Hall of Fame, which is the highest honor bestowed to professionals in the association. Also, at the annual conference, Scott (son) received the accolade of PA Auctioneer of the Year. This is just the second time a father and son received such honors in the same year at the conference’s annual awards banquet (Blaine and Nevin Rentzel being the other two). Also during the conference, Wehrly associate Shawn Carbaugh placed fourth out of 22 in the bid calling contest, which was
held the evening of Jan. 9 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Another honor for Charles occured when the state’s swine association honored him for his years of service to the organization, dating to the 1950s, showing hogs and being a ringman. The PAA Conference is held concurrently every year with the State Farm Show. Wehrly’s Auction Service sells firearms, coins, tools, antiques, and real estate and is based in York County. They are located at 4067 Snyder Road, Glen Rock, Pa. To learn more, call 717-235-4146. Remember when looking for an auctioneer, find out if they belong to the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association, where members abide to a professional code of ethics and laws.

“Dorothea Lange’s America” To Open At Lebanon Valley College The Great Depression (1929-39) was the catalyst for a tremendous outburst of creative energy in America’s photographic community. The devastation wreaked on the country inspired a host of socially conscious photographers to capture the painful stories of the time. An exhibition running now through Sunday, March 24, at Lebanon Valley College (LVC) in Annville, Pa., features the work of Dorothea Lange (American, 1895-1965) and 13 other such artists. Lange’s empathetic images of migrant workers, suffering families, and tortured landscapes seared the faces of the Depression into Photographer Dorothea Lange’s (American, America’s consciousness. 1895-1965) “Migrant Mother” from Nipomo, Calif., This exhibition includes was taken in 1936. The February grouping is an affordable selection with something for beginner collectors and those who are looking to fill out an existing collection. Another carry-over from December’s auction is a grouping of fire-related toys, with examples by Dent and Ives. of visitors. In the fiscal year that ended on June 30, international tourists accounted for 34 percent of the museum’s visitors, with China providing some 14 percent of international tourists. The Met Cloisters, the northern Manhattan branch of the museum, drew 350,000 visitors in 2018, a record for the location that was fueled by the “Heavenly Bodies” attendance, and the Met Breuer brought in over 400,000 to exhibitions such as “Everything Is Connected: Art and Conspiracy”; “Odyssey: Jack Whitten Sculpture, 1963–2017”; “Like Life: Sculpture, Color, and the Body (1300–Now)”; and “Obsession: Nudes by Klimt, Schiele, and Picasso from the Scofield Thayer Collection.” About The Metropolitan Museum of Art The Met presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy. The museum lives in three iconic sites in New York City: the Met Fifth Avenue, the Met Breuer, and the Met Cloisters. Millions of people also take part in the Met experience online.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics will be any true value here. If you are looking to invest, go after pre-1970s graded cards in the highest grade you can afford. Eye appeal matters as well, so only buy cards with good color and quality that are well centered. 2. Vintage Toys and Action Figures Use caution in this market, as I feel a lot of high-quality items are coming out of display cases and storage bins due to how much some of these pieces are now going for. I expect a leveling of prices across the board, and in 2018, common and less hard to find vintage “Star Wars” pieces did just that. That said, I cannot ignore the fact that numerous auction records were broken for rarer items, and those sales did pull in a lot more buyers than what we saw in 2017, respectively. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Vintage G.I. Joe from the 1980s is quite affordable right now, and without a major movie coming out soon, the brand is not in the proverbial spotlight at present. If you are looking for a place to start, I would start there. Avoid “Star Wars!” There is a hangover starting to develop in the vintage “Star Wars” toy market that few want to admit. Prices are leveling and in some cases falling. Disney buying the brand propped up the market exponentially, but now interest is back down to lukewarm levels. “Masters of the Universe” is hot right now and should be watched closely in the years to come. 1. Vintage Graded Magic: The Gathering Cards I still cannot believe that a graded Black Lotus Alpha edition game card printed in 1993 sold for close to $100,000 in BGS 9.5. That said, lesser cards that have a cult following are still selling for record sums. Some call this a speculator’s market, but if one sticks to

investing in high-grade vintage cards that have both nostalgic appeal and some rarity, this market has legs. Prices for graded cards have increased exponentially over the past two years, while the price of similar cards in ungraded condition have actually fallen. The market always favors certified collectibles. Advice to novice collectors and investors: This market can no longer be ignored. If you have significant cash to invest, you can do no wrong by going after original vintage art that inspired the original game cards. Be prepared to spend tens of thousands of dollars though. That said, collectors need to use caution. Just because a card is on the coveted “reserve list” and cannot be reprinted does not make it a worthy investment. You want to go after the top 25 percent of reserved list cards that have nostalgia, collectability, and are highly sought after. Ignore modern

In my last article, we continued our yearly tradition of looking at five collecting categories that have either lost significant ground in 2018 or were already on a downward trend that continues. We will now look at five collecting categories that have either maintained their momentum as we enter 2019 or have seen steady action on the auction block. As always, my observations may be different than yours. That said, I stand by all my choices. Now onto the list. 5. Vintage Advertising Still going strong. I honestly thought this one would start to weaken by now, but every year I am proven wrong. Vintage soda advertising and anything gas and oil related is leading the charge. Quality antique and vintage CocaCola advertising is back big time, along with some newcomers. The market is soaring for original vintage Nintendo advertising in near-mint condition. This sector of the market looks poised to make significant crossroads in the coming years as the generation that grew up with Nintendo starts to age. Advice to novice collectors and investors: If collecting soda and gas and oil advertising, the sweet spot is pre1960s. For vintage Nintendo advertising, you want anything prior to 1995. Be careful buying vintage Nintendo advertising, as a lot of fantasy and reproduction pieces exist. Very few established auction houses have yet to cater to vintage Nintendo advertising, but that will change soon. Vintage and antique tobacco advertising is dying a slow death as younger collectors just aren’t interested in it. 4. Vintage Pinball
Machines and Antique CoinOperated Devices Vintage pinball machines continue to be sought-after collectibles. The sweet spot is for games made from 1975 to 1995, as it was this time period that most classic pinball games were made. On the other end of the spectrum, antique and older slot machines continue to attract interest at auction. These trends show no signs of slowing down. Note that vintage arcade video games are not part of this category and continue to be dismal collectibles due to the ease of playing those games on newer home video game systems at a fraction of their cost. Advice to novice collectors and investors: If you are thinking of buying a vintage pinball machine, do your research and buy from a well-respected company. If it breaks down, they can service it. I don’t recommend novice collectors invest in this area due to the high costs of both transporting the machines and maintenance. The market is unkind to hobbyists and novice collectors alike. 3. Vintage Graded Sports Cards and Memorabilia Thanks to rising interest among high-profile auction houses like Heritage Auctions and even PWCC Auctions on eBay, interest in vintage graded sports cards is booming. The trick here is to go after actual vintage cards from the 1960s and earlier. While some of the newer stuff (1980s and newer) has actually increased modestly, the true value is in truly scarce and hard-to-find vintage cards now being graded by companies PSA and BGS. Avoid the hype and stay true to vintage rarities. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Avoid modern mass-produced product being sold as a collectible. There is and never

mass-produced items and cards that have no real appeal. And there you have the top five collecting categories, based on my observations, as we enter 2019. As a bonus, my next article will look at five collecting categories that I consider to be neutral. These categories have not gained any significant ground in 2018 but haven’t lost any either.

day, American history will be in the spotlight in the form of Civil War rifles, carbines and handguns, together with many ultra-desirable revolvers by Merwin Hulbert, a New Yorkbased company that produced its guns in Connecticut from 1876 through 1916. “During the late 19th century, Merwin Hulbert revolvers were used by police departments in many Eastern U.S. cities,” said Tony Wilcox, Morphy Auctions’ expert on Colt, Winchester and 19thand 20th-century militaria. Day two will begin with a fine selection of contemporary and collectible military firearms, both foreign and domestic, and will progress into a blue-ribbon array of Browning rifles and shotguns and a mini armory of custom European and American rifles and shotguns with a strong emphasis on Remington and Winchester. Beginner collectiblefirearms enthusiasts are expected to join advanced collectors at an important threeday event slated for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 5, 6 and 7, at Morphy’s southeastern Pennsylvania gallery in Denver, Lancaster County. With 1,815 lots of coveted rifles, small arms, quality accessories and ephemera on the agenda, there’s little chance that anyone will go home empty-handed. For those who cannot attend in person, the illustrated auction catalog, with detailed descriptions written by Morphy’s team of firearms specialists, is now available to view online. All forms of remote bidding are available, including phone, absentee and live via the internet through Morphy Live. Day one will feature a quantity of World War II military and contemporary U.S. military rifles. Additionally, there are large offerings of modern and contemporary sporting handguns, a sizable collection of Colt collectible handguns (including 20 Pythons, Diamondbacks and Anacondas) and numerous Colt automatic handguns. Also featured will be the largest number of Smith & Wesson revolvers ever presented in a Morphy firearms sale. Later on in the opening session, bidders can take their pick from high-grade sporting shotguns by A.H. Fox, Beretta, Browning, Ithaca, L.C. Smith, Parker and many European makers. Toward the end of the
collectible European military firearms of diverse origins, including Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Poland, France, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Japan and China, as well as the United States. Other group lots focus on American sporting firearms by Remington, Marlin, Winchester and Henry. There will also be moderately priced sporting and collectible firearms by Winchester, Beretta, Colt, Glock, Ruger and Smith & Wesson. Already an object of fascination to collectors who’ve visited Morphy’s gallery or viewed the online catalog is the premier single-owner collection of American military and Winchester ammunition boxes. “This is definitely one of the finest collections of its type that I have ever seen,” said Wilcox. “It was built over 50 years and has a timeline that runs from the Civil War through present day.” The collection will be followed by sporting and firearms-related calendars, advertising signs and associated ephemera from Winchester, Beretta and Colt. Clark Avery (1885-1965) sold for $31,750. Lot 375, the oil-oncanvas “Mother and Child in the Garden” by Virginie Demont-Breton (1859-1935), was estimated at $10,000$20,000 and realized $25,620. This charming piece lovingly depicts a young family drenched in sunlight under an orange tree in full bloom. Lot 300, a mixed media watercolor and body color/paper portrait of a child by Carl Haag (1820-1965), more than doubled its low estimate to sell at $16,800. It was from the estate of Kenneth Jay Lane (19322017), a well-known costume jewelry designer who loved the Oriental aesthetic. Lot 211, Cornelia Toe Boecop’s (15511630) oil-on-panel, “Portrait of a Gentleman,” from 1606, realized an impressive $16,800 on its $3,000-$5,000 estimate. But perhaps the sleeper of the auction was an oil-on-board, illegibly signed half-length portrait of a gentleman with a
Louis Comfort Tiffany’s (1848-1933) orientalism themed “Woman Reading by Adobe House” sold for $20,400.

Rare Knives Lead Heritage Auctions’ Arms And Armor, Civil War And Militaria Sale Collection Benefiting J.M. Davis Arms And Historical Museum Brings $267,700 A collection of exceptional knives and an ornate double barrel shotgun led the final total for Heritage Auctions’ Arms and Armor, Civil War and Militaria Auction on Dec. 9 to $1,486,262. The auction included the sale of more than 130 lots to benefit the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum based in Claremore, Okla. “You could see and feel the bidding pick up when the J.M. Davis Museum lots took the podium,” said Heritage Auctions Arms and Armor consignment director David Carde. “Buyers know when items are fresh to the market and have not been offered in the past. The prices realized are a reflection of our clients’ knowledge and understanding of the historical significance of many of these lots.” A Michael Price abalone mosaic California knife became the focus of four
A Michael Price abalone mosaic California knife realized $45,000, nearly double its pre-auction estimate. A cased and engraved James Purdey & Sons sidelock ejector double barrel shotgun tempted 10 collectors into making bids before it crossed the block at $28,750, nearly 50 percent above its pre-auction estimate.

competitive bidders, who drove its price to $45,000. Price, San Francisco’s premier 19th-century cutler, worked ca. 1856-89. The piece featured an elaborate mosaic handle of native California abalone shell and silver, with the top piece of abalone on each side in the form of a keystone. The handle’s wrapped edges and the guard are silver and engraved with beautiful scrollwork. A cased and engraved James Purdey & Sons sidelock ejector double barrel s h o t g u n tempted collectors and crossed the block at $28,750. and a front bead sight, and a single trigger. The right barrel was marked “J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. ENGLAND.” The barrels, lever and trigger guard had a blued finish, and the casehardened receiver was marked “J. PURDEY & SONS”
on each side. It took just two competitive bidders to drive the sale price for a clip point Bowie by J.D. Chevalier, of New York, to $27,500, nearly doubling its high pre-auction estimate. The heavy 9-1/8-inch clip point blade was marked “J.D. CHEVALIER, NEW YORK,” and the case brass handle frame houses dark wood inserts. Although his main business was the production of dental instruments, Chevalier was
among the best known American knife makers in the 19th century and made a large number of knives for travelers headed west for the California Gold Rush in 1849. A rare hunting knife attributed to the Schively family, Philadelphia, ca. 1830s-40s, also raced past pre-auction estimates before finishing at $23,750. The knife was made either by Philadelphia-based Henry Schively, or his sons, George and/or Charles, who
worked with their father and also independently. The 6.5inch blade featured a sharpened false edge ground only from the obverse side. The 11-inch knife, with finely checkered horn slab handles attached with iron pins, is arguably the best of fewer than 10 known examples of this style. Also in high demand was a CSA Confederate Gen.
