Animation Birthday Celebrations Highlight Heritage Animation Art Auction A $1.5 Million Dollar Sale Total Pushes Department To New Record A painting by one of the most famous Walt Disney Studios artists of all time helped Heritage Auctions’ Dec. 9 and 10 Animation Art Auction in Beverly Hills, Calif., clear more than $1.5 million, making it one of the most successful auctions ever for the department. The total was the department’s seventh straight auction that totaled at least $1 million and pushed its total for the year to nearly $3.7 million, establishing a new record for sales in a single year for the department. “The animation art department has enjoyed its best year yet,” said Heritage Auctions director of animation Jim Lentz. “This auction marked the perfect way to cap off the year. We were able to offer an incredible array of lots that brought out the most serious collectors of

Collector Anecdotes And Antics What’s Hot And What’s Not, The 2018 Edition: Part Two In my last article, we looked at the top five collecting categories that gained incredible momentum in 2017. While that article looked at some of the hottest collecting categories in the trade, it is now time to look at the top five collecting categories that lost some momentum in 2017. You are welcome to disagree with this list, but do so with caution. It should be noted that some of these collecting categories are poised to return to popularity, while others will continue their slow and steady decline. 5. Numismatics: Coins and Paper Money Astute readers of this column will remember this category also gracing last year’s list. Unfortunately, not much has changed. If you are a lucky owner of a six-figure coin or note, of which there are very few specimens, then please disregard this entry. However, if you are the modest to higher-end collector who has a lot of semi-key and even high-grade certified key coins and notes, of which they are multiple examples, then you are already feeling the sting. Auction sales for onceprominent coins like the 1921 Peace Dollar, most mint state Carson City Morgan Dollars, and even higher grade certified silver and gold certificates are down across the
Year-Round
board. Younger collectors just aren’t collecting numismatics like their elders, and adding to the downturn is a lot of older collectors selling into a lukewarm market where supply is steady. Just check out recent sales records from Heritage Auctions for verification that prices on a lot of high quality items are not what they used to be. Advice to novice collectors and investors: You have a several years wait for a turnaround in this market, if it even comes. Enjoy the low prices, and if you are investing, go after scarce but undervalued high-grade coins and notes. If you are confident in the price of gold and silver, now is a great time to add mint state Saint Gaudens gold coins to your collection as well as mint state semi-key Morgan dollars. 4. Vintage arcade video game machines and related coin-ops I hinted at this entry in my last column. While vintage pinball machines and early slot machines continue to soar to new heights, vintage arcade video game machines are dying a slow death. Yes, certain classic games like PacMan, Donkey Kong, and a slew of obscure titles will always have a cult following, but for most part these games are much better left to nostalgia. For one, they are easily emulated on home video game systems, and two, the nostalgia that comes with owning

them is short-lived. Your girlfriend or significant other may get a kick out of playing Ms. Pac-Man on a stand up vintage arcade machine for the first few times; however, once the initial nostalgia wears off, you both are going to be left wondering why you didn’t just download the game on your Playstation 4. Advice to novice collectors and investors: If you have to own a coin-op game at all, vintage pinball is where it is at! You cannot emulate a true pinball experience on a home video game console which adds to the allure. 3. Used and played with ’80s and ’90s toys The key words in this entry are used and played with. If you own near-mint or better AFA graded vintage toys from the 1980s and 1990s, your holdings are increasing in value across the board. Unfortunately, this trend hasn’t extended to owners who kept their less-than-near-mint toys from childhood. These can be seen selling on the secondary market for a fraction of their near-mint and highly sought-after counterparts. A general rule of thumb for toy collecting is condition, condition, condition. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Sell the lesser condition items and upgrade to near-mint or better examples. Go for graded examples if investing for long-term gains. 2. Retro and vintage home video games The speculative bubble

that launched a lot of these items in the stratosphere is finally showing signs of wavering. With more than 95 percent of all vintage video games still worth nowhere near their original retail prices and collectors’ tastes quickly changing, expect more price declines to continue. The often hyped original NES Nintendo system followed by the Super NES systems and games are horrendously overvalued. While this will always be the coveted era of vintage gaming, collectors cannot expect continued price trends to continue, and, sadly, a lot of collectors in this hobby are also hardcore speculators. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Most of your popular vintage video games are easily emulated on newer systems (just look at Nintendo’s excellent handling of the Virtual Console system on the Wii for example). Go after games and systems that
Advice to novice collectors and investors: Look for iconic or vintage Lego sets that offer long-term growth and collectability. There is absolutely no point in hoarding 90 percent of all factory sealed Lego Star Wars sets for long-term growth because Lego continues to re-release most sets in the series, which has a negative effect on the pricing and collectability of previous versions. And there you have it—the five collecting categories that are losing momentum as we enter 2018. Collectors should pay a lot of attention to these categories before choosing to spend large sums of money going forward. My next column will offer a bonus for 2018 as we look at five more collecting categories that offer the best long-term potential for 2018 and beyond.

are not easily emulated. That’s where the future opportunity lies along with failed defunct video game systems that sold poorly (think Wii U and Sony Vita). 1. New Licensed and Exclusive Lego sets and minifigures I think 2017 was the year that the Lego secondary market started crumbling, but cracks appeared in its proverbial foundation long before that. With Lego releasing a record number of licensed and exclusive sets along with plans to re-release previously coveted sets, Lego removed an element of scarcity and collectability from the market. And make no mistake, collectors and speculators noticed. In fourth quarter of 2017, a lot of previous pro-speculators who were heavily invested in Lego for possible investment potential began to reverse course. As of the beginning of 2018, Lego has announced plans to reintroduce a lot of previously discontinued sets, scaring speculators and longterm investors alike. The released Lego Star Wars Death Star and the Taj Mahal are two such examples.

a few of these items include the following: 1. Several pairs of Clay’s fight-worn boxing gloves, including Golden Gloves worn pairs. 2. A selection of trainingused items from Clay’s Louisville and Deer Lake facilities, including bags, gloves, jump ropes, a ring bell, and a mouthpiece. 3. A significant circa 1960s ring record glove signed “Cassius Marcellus Clay.” 4. Historically important document which Clay requests his name be changed from “Cassius Clay” to “Muhammad Ali” for the Brian London fight held in August 1966 at Earl’s Court Exhibition Hall in London. 5. The earliest known pair of Cassius Clay worn trunks. “This is a truly exceptional collection focused on the early part of Muhammad Ali’s career. It includes some of the most significant collection of Cassius Clay items assembled. Ali materials at auction always generate enormous interest, and I am certain that bids for these will be coming in from all over,” said Kevin Bronson, Morphy’s Sports Memorabilia consultant. “It has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life discovering items from the early life and career of Muhammad Ali. Much of Ali’s life is undocumented prior to 1960; as such, it is safe to say this is the largest and most historic collection of young Cassius Clay memorabilia ever offered for sale. It’s both

Morphy Auctions is excited to announce that it will be offering the Gary Traugh Cassius Clay collection as part of its upcoming Saturday, March 24, Sports Memorabilia sale. Over 150 authenticated and outstanding selections will be on offer as part of this world-class event. Morphy’s Sports Memorabilia division is an emerging leader in this category as demonstrated by its fall debut sale, which generated over $718,000. All lots from this March event will be on display and available for preview in Morphy’s Denver auction gallery starting in February. Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. In 1960, at 18 years old, he rose to fame by winning an Olympic gold medal in boxing at the Rome Summer Games. He turned professional shortly after. By 1964, he had won heavyweight championship titles from the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council, and he was considered the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. He would go on to be the only three-time lineal heavyweight champion in boxing. His legacy, popularity, and influence are still as strong as ever. The Gary Traugh collection includes a wide and carefully curated array of Cassius Clay materials through 1964. Traugh had a close, personal relationship with Muhammad Ali and assembled hundreds of oneof-a-kind, museum quality articles from the beginnings of Ali’s climb to international celebrity. There is no doubt that Ali enthusiasts, sports memorabilia collectors, museums, and historical and political organizations will be competing for the rarities on offer. Just

Understanding Appraisal Values
PUBLIC SALE
“What’s It Worth: Antiques Minute” By Mike Ivankovich One of the biggest mistakes people make when selling antiques and collectibles is their failure to understand different “appraisal values,” which can vary widely depending upon the original appraisal purpose. For example, in very simplified terms, an insurance appraisal value is defined as “What’s the most it will cost you to replace an insured item if lost, damaged, destroyed, or stolen.” That’s a fair but high retail asking price. A fair market value is defined as “What’s a ‘fair’ price between a knowledgeable and willing buyer and
seller,” which is usually lower than the insurance value. The liquidation value is what most people want to know, “What can I expect to receive if I sell it soon.” What typically happens? Not understanding the difference between values, a seller will take a jewelry item appraised for insurance purposes at $10,000, consign it for sale at auction, expecting approximately $10,000, and when it sells for only $800, they feel cheated. So before selling any item that has already been appraised, you should understand what the appraisal value actually means.
What’s it worth? We perform many house and estate contents appraisals, and we conduct many “Antiques Road Show”-type events. And nearly 99 percent of the time people want to know the liquidation value, or what they can sell their items for. And once we determine the type of appraised value they’re seeking, our final question is usually, “Do you want it sugarcoated, or right between the eyes.” Because it’s ugly out there for many items, and, if the younger generations aren’t interested in it, value is typically much lower than they hoped. Fortunately, most people say, “Give it to us right

Ask Mike the Appraiser” radio show that airs live on Friday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. on WBCB 1490 AM in the Greater Philadelphia area. It is available on the internet at www.WBCB1490.com. Cordier Announces New Hires
CABIN FEVER AUCTIONS
STANDARD GAUGE & TINPLATE TRAINS, LIONEL POSTWAR & MODERN TRAIN AUCTION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH
Melissa Fretz
Matthew Chilton
As part of their continued growth and expansion, Harrisburg, Pa., based Cordier Auctions and Appraisals has recently welcomed three additional professional staff members to their team. Harold “Howie” Hartman joins Cordier as director of photography and branding and brings with him over 20 years of experience in photography, advertising, publishing, and teaching. Utilizing his degree in graphic design, he has previously worked as a graphic artist, art director and photographer. Howie and his wife, Heather, live in West Lampeter, Lancaster County, with their three sons. Relocating from Michigan, Melissa Fretz is an antiques and art catalog specialist. Fretz “was interested in the position because it was outside the box from what people with a Master’s in Library and Information Science degree usually do, yet the work is highly relatable,” she said. “My job is fascinating and one where I can learn something new every day.” She has business and account management experience and has
interned with the Detroit Historical Society Archive in conjunction with the Historic Fort Wayne Coalition. She resides with her husband in Midtown Harrisburg, where they are enjoying renovating their townhouse. Matthew Chilton is the new firearms and militaria auction director and holds a bachelor’s degree in history as well as a master’s in humanities. He is also currently pursuing a Master of Arts in U.S. Military History. He previously worked as an inventory manager, firearms and militaria expert, and consultant. Chilton enjoys collecting militaria and both antique and modern firearms, sports collectibles, coins and currency, and historical artifacts. Regarding his position with Cordier Auctions, Chilton stated, “I love working here, turning my hobby into a career, and sharing my collecting passion with others.” He and his wife, Kelly, live in Hagerstown, Md. Cordier Auctions and Appraisals is a full-service auction company. For information, readers may call 717-731-8662.

Special Exhibition At The Met Highlights Spectacular Vajrayana Ritual Crowns
CARLISLE, PA THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8 3:00 P.M. Location:

Carlisle.

ANTIQUES & COLLECTIBLES
utensils that will also be on view bear inscriptions indicating that they were commissioned to commemorate a religious service performed by a Vajracharya priest. Both a caste name and priestly title, Vajracharya translates as “thunderbolt scepter (vajra) master,” the vajra being the quintessential symbol of the Vajrayana system of esoteric Buddhism. The Newar community is unique in the Buddhist world for having a hereditary priesthood: males are entitled to be ordained for priestly service by virtue of their birth, their role more analogous to Brahman priests who serve Hindu devotees than to conventional monks and nuns who elect to follow the Buddha path. The donning of the ritual crown is the pinnacle of the ordination ceremony of Vajracharya priests. At that moment, the initiate assumes the wisdom of a Transcendent Buddha and is entitled to perform pujas (worship) for the benefit of his community. The exhibition is curated by John Guy, Florence and Herbert Irving curator of South and Southeast Asian Art at The Met. The exhibition is featured on The Met website and also on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition in its South Asian exhibition gallery highlights the Vajracharya priest’s crowns of Nepal. “Crowns of the Vajra Masters: Ritual Art of Nepal” includes five crowns, the largest group ever displayed, evoking the five Transcendent Buddhas. This is the first-ever exhibition to celebrate this unique tradition in Nepalese Buddhism. One of the most spectacular symbols of Buddhist ritual in Nepal, the crowns date from the 13th to the 18th century. The exhibition examines their devotional use, iconography, and stylistic evolution. It also considers how the crowns preserve the memory of early Indian Buddhist practices that otherwise would be lost. These practices can be traced back to the fifth century and the great mural paintings of Ajanta. The crowns on view are drawn from The Met collection, including an important gift from Barbara and David Kipper, and from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. They are augmented by Nepalese paintings and ritual objects that were used to perform Vajrayana rituals. The exhibition is made possible by The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Fund and Dipti B. and Rakesh Mathur. Ritual is at the heart of esoteric Vajrayana Buddhism, and central to its enactment in Nepal was the wearing of these elaborate crowns, which transformed the wearer into a perfected being. Made of gilt copper with applied repoussé medallions inset with semiprecious stones, rock crystal, turquoise, and coral, the crowns on view, the ultimate emblems of ritual authority, were worn exclusively by the hereditary caste of Vajracharyas, who occupied the highest rank in the Nepalese Buddhist Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley. Many of the Nepalese paintings, sculptures, and ritual
