45th Pittsburgh Antiques Show And Sale Set For Feb. 15 And 16 The George Nakashima dining table with dovetail joints over two large slats and the six Nakashima grass seated wishbone chairs sold as one lot for $25,300. On Jan. 4, Bodnar’s Auction Sales kicked off the new calendar year with a bang. The buzz around this particular sale was going on months prior, and the results were very exciting. It all began in the fall when Joseph Bodnar received a call from someone needing help with his aunt’s property in Metuchen, N.J. She had passed away, and he was in charge of cleaning out the contents of the house. He knew he had authentic George Nakashima furniture; however, he had no idea of what

it was worth in today’s marketplace. The multi-estate auction Bodnar put together highlighted the Nakashima furniture. “The items all seemed to come together and fit like a puzzle to create one fantastic auction,” stated Bodnar. Bodnar’s Auction Sales, based in Edison, N.J., has been in operation for over 25 years. They hold auctions one to two times a month and draw large crowds. One factor that has helped over the years is the fact the firm conducts Continued on page 2

For Black History Month, the auction will begin with 41 black images, many of which are from the Keith Williams collection. Ranging from pejorative to luminous, they reveal the severity of racism in early advertising as well as the later celebration of black icons including Josephine Baker. Notable lots include Paul Colin’s reverential portrait of the French-Algerian actor Habib Benglia in his 1928 Benglia (est. $3,000-$4,000) and a touching World War I recruitment ad, Colored Man is No Slacker (est. $800-$1,000). Thirty more World War I posters are featured, mostly American designs, and all powerful. Of particular note are Christy’s Gee!! I Wish I Were a Man (est. $1,400-$1,700) and several works by Flagg, including Wake Up, America! (est. $6,000-$8,000) and I Want You for U.S. Army (est. $5,000-$6,000). Decades later, America

Schaeffer collection includes extraordinary examples of every format of photography from the birth of the medium in 1839 to the modern era. With these unusual and little-known historical works, the Met will now be able to rewrite the narrative of American photography by associating established early masters of the genre, Josiah Johnson Hawes, John Moran, Charles DeForest Fredricks, and Carleton Watkins, with generally unknown makers whose lives and works have yet to be fully studied and presented to the general public,” according to Jeff Rosenheim, the Joyce Frank Menschel curator in charge of

the Department of Photographs at the Met. A choice selection of daguerreotypes and early paper prints in the promised gift from Jennifer and Philip Maritz is included in the recently-opened exhibition “2020 Vision: Photographs, 1840s–1860s,” currently on view through May 10. The tightly focused exhibition of some 50 works presents new and recent gifts of photographs made before the founding of the Met in 1870. By that time, photography, introduced three decades earlier in 1839, had already developed into a complex pictorial language of documentation, social and scientific inquiry, self-expression, and artistic endeavor. The exhibition includes examples of candid portraiture, picturesque landscapes, pioneering travel photography, and photojournalism and charts the varied interests and innovations of early practitioners such as Anna Atkins, Hippolyte Bayard, and William Henry Fox Talbot. About the Met’s 150th Anniversary In 2020, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding with a dynamic range of exhibitions, programs, and public events. Highlights of the year will include the exhibition “Making The Met, 1870–2020,” on view March 30 to Aug. 2; the opening of the newly renovated and reimagined galleries devoted to British decorative arts and design in March; the display of new gifts throughout the museum; a three-daylong celebration in June; and a story-collecting initiative. Collector Anecdotes And Antics What’s Hot, What’s Not: The 2020 Edition that capture the element of the Art Deco movement and form will continue to do well at auction. I predict that this will get even stronger as we progress through the new decade. Much like the minimalistic styling of Mid-Century Modern, Art Deco captures the feeling of minimalism quite brilliantly and also tends to stand out when compared to more elegant furnishings that don’t seem to have the same appeal that they once did (I’m looking at you Queen Anne style). Tip to novice collectors: Patience is the key here. Be sure to attend auctions in person and wait for the right piece to come up for bid, one that speaks directly to you. The market for a lot of these items is strong and getting a little
not only extreme speculation, but also insanity. Use caution if you choose to enter the graded video game market at present time. There are several high profile companies profiting highly off this at a lot of novices’ expense. The market should see a correction sometime over the next 5 to 10 years, where some prices will go up but many will go down. It’s tulip mania in this market at present time. And there you have the five hottest markets in the antiques and collectibles trade. In my next column we will look at five markets that are cooling significantly. Thanks for reading!

It is that time again to look at what’s hot, and what’s not in the antiques and collectibles trade. In this edition, we will start off on a positive note and look at five categories that set the collecting world on fire in 2019, and see if these trends can continue. As always, it should be noted that this list comes from my own observations in the trade, and readers are welcome to agree or disagree. 5. Antique and Vintage Firearms. Collectible guns will always be a staple in the antiques and collectibles trade, and 2019 was no different. From antique firearms to more contemporary weapons and the like, there is no greater sense of history than holding a weapon that was used in the Revolutionary or Civil War. With the publicity that followed the sale of the 1847 rare Colt Walker Pistol back in April of 2018 for $1.8 million at Rock Island Auction Company, collectors and enthusiasts ensured that antique firearms would
has been weakening in some instances over the past few years, the market is still red hot. There is some price resistance at the higher levels, but most pieces selling for less than $2,500 or under are on fire. Younger collectors with high incomes seem to be fueling this trend, and it is still going strong. Collectors should avoid the contemporary massproduced pieces and focus on the original vintage counterparts instead. A lot of major companies have caught on to the mid-century modern trend and are now trying to market and sell it as original. Buyer beware. Tip to novice collectors: Buy from trusted sources and do your homework. Auction houses appear to be the place to get the best deals. Be careful buying from high profile dealers in and around major Metropolitan cities, as prices seem to be highest there. 2. Art Deco Furnishings and Related Collectibles. What is old is new again. Now that the 1920s are officially close to being 100 years ago, interest in Art Deco and related designs is heating up again. I refer to it as the “Great Gatsby” effect. Make no mistake that this trend will continue, and a lot of designs

remain a viable collectible market going forward, and this trend is not letting up any time soon. Tip to novice collectors: Antique firearms is where most of the action in this market is, especially if buying for investment. That said, buying in-demand contemporary firearms may be a less expensive strategy that could yield results if you are a more speculative collector on a budget. Luxury Collectibles. 4. Rolex watches and Hermes Birkin handbags may seem out of reach for most collectors, but we are living in an age where items from the 1980s are now fetching six figures or more at auction. Therefore, that $10,000 vintage Rolex looks like a bargain. Just because both Rolex and Hermes are luxury goods manufacturers doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a spot on this list. Due to a growing economy and a booming stock market, many well financed collectors are entering the luxury goods market, and prices for Hermes Birkin bags and vintage Rolex watches continue to soar. Tip to novice collectors: You cannot enter this market with less than $5,000. However, if you study the market and watch completed auction listings, you can get a sense of market trends. Be very patient if you are new to these markets and looking to make your first purchase. A vintage Rolex watch, if bought correctly, is a much better investment than a newer model. 3. Mid-Century Modern Furniture. While the trend for mid-century modern furniture
stronger, but there are still some deals. Again, much like Mid-Century Modern, you are better off buying from well vetted auction houses than overpriced Metropolitan retail galleries. 1. Graded and Vintage Video Games. I am hesitant to place this on this list and even at the number one spot, but whether or not you agree with some of the crazy prices being paid, you still cannot deny that the market exists, even if it is being manipulated. That said, collectors are now willing to pay thousands of dollars for factory-sealed video games from the vintage years that they will never play, just as long as they are graded and encased in plastic. Make no mistake the market has legs but is overheated. Would I be buying into this market at present time? Absolutely not, but a lot of people are. Use caution. Tip to novice collectors: This market is suffering from

Cupids And Hearts Abound At Haddon Heights In February, love is in the air and all around the Haddon Heights Antiques Center, where the shop’s special sales display is dedicated to tokens of love and symbols of Valentine’s Day. Looking for a vintage Valentine’s card? Dozens of romantic turn-of-the-century postcards are in the shop and in the display. There are antique fold-outs and charming cards that children distributed to classmates in school from the 1920s through the 1960s. Need Valentine’s Day decorations? The shop has heartshaped planters and dishes, figurines featuring Cupid, red glass, lacey doilies, and more. There are unique gifts to impress that special someone. It will be hard to make a decision when faced with so
many beautiful pieces of vintage jewelry, cut crystal, and silver. The winter season is a wonderful time to explore the Haddon Heights Antiques Center. The active dealers are always changing stock, and special finds are made all the time. Regular shoppers fall in love with the variety, as well as the generous discounts. This multi-dealer shop is located at 531 Clements Bridge Road in Barrington, N.J., just off the White Horse Pike and I-295 where Haddon Heights and Barrington meet at the railroad tracks. “Head with Horns” was formerly attributed to Paul Gauguin. Photo by Sepia Times/Universal Images Group, courtesy Getty Images. that, to date, the sculpture has not been submitted to the WPI’s Gauguin committee for research and examination. This would not be the first time that the Wildensteins have been caught in a public controversy. The French artdealing family has been accused of evading taxes in France, hiding missing or stolen artworks, and even of trading artworks with the Nazis during World War II, all claims the family denies. The Getty is now researching the sandalwood sculpture and its lacewood base to try to learn more about its origins. Some Polynesian art experts say its devilish horns suggest the iconography is not local, but comes from Christian and European sources. Another theory, floated by Fourmanoir, is that it was carved by a European tourist. Photo by Sepia times/Universal Images Group courtesy Getty Images.

National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., MoMA in New York, and the Museo delle Culture in Milan. But the sculpture was never signed by Gauguin, and his photographs of it showed it atop a pedestal not carved in any of the now known styles. Originally dated to between 1895 and 1897, which lines up the artist’s time in Tahiti, it is now thought to be from 1894, a time when Gauguin is known to have been in France. The work has long been questioned by some experts. Shortly after the Getty acquired it, Fabrice Fourmanoir, a collector of 19th-century Tahitian photography, found a picture of the sculpture by Jules Agostini captioned “Idole Marquisienne” (Marquisian Idol), suggesting that Agostini thought the piece was by an indigenous artist from the Marquesas Islands, then a part of French Polynesia. In Agostini’s photo album, “Head with Horns” is shown next to a portrait of George Lagarde, a collector of ethnographic art who may have been the owner of the sculpture. The photographs both date to 1894. The sculpture’s provenance was always a bit murky. It was included in a show at the Fondation Maeght in 1997 after being purchased, four years earlier, by Wildenstein & Company from a private Swiss collector. The work was first attributed to Gauguin by Daniel Wildenstein, the author of a Gauguin catalogue raisonné of painting focusing on the years 1873 to 1888. Another volume, covering the years 1888 to 1903, is due at the end of 2020 but will not include sculptures, the Wildenstein Plattner Institute tells Artnet News. They said

Kate Brown of Artnet News on art.net.com reported a prized and rare sculpture by Paul Gauguin that was acquired by the J. Paul Getty Museum for a reported $3 to $5 million has been deemed a fake. The sculpture, titled “Head with Horns,” has been reattributed by researchers to an unknown artist and pulled from the museum’s permanent display, according to the Art Newspaper and Le Figaro. The institution acquired the work in 2002 from Wildenstein & Company, a FrenchAmerican art-dealing dynasty that is embroiled in a series of lawsuits. Researchers made the change in attribution quietly last December, and the work was noticeably absent from recent Gauguin blockbuster exhibits at Ottawa’s National Gallery of Canada and the National Gallery in London. The prime pieces of evidence linking the work to Gauguin were two photographs of the sculpture by the artist included in his Tahitian travelogue, “Noa Noa.” A 2002 press release from the Getty drawing attention to its resemblance to the artist suggested that it may have been a symbolic self-portrait. “Sculpture by Gauguin is exceedingly rare, and this intriguing work stands out as a superb example,” said Deborah Gribbon, then the director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, at the time of the acquisition. “We feel especially fortunate to be able to display ‘Head with Horns,’ which will become a natural centerpiece of our installation of symbolist art.” After being bought by Getty, the piece circulated the world, traveling to shows at Tate Modern in London, the

One Of The World’s Largest Movie Poster Collections Showcased In New Book “Cinema On Paper” Marks First Publication Focused On The Dwight M. Cleveland Collection Assouline Publishing has released a new book that highlights one of the largest and most comprehensive movie poster collections ever privately assembled. “Cinema on Paper: The Graphic Genius of Movie Posters” marks the first time that the collection of Dwight M. Cleveland, widely recognized as one of the world’s most significant private holdings of movie posters, spanning more than a century of film history, has ever been the focus of a major monographic book publication. The release of “Cinema on Paper” follows the exhibition of the collection that was held at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 2019. A real estate developer and historic preservationist based in Chicago, Ill., Dwight Cleveland has been collecting movie posters for more than 40 years, during which he assembled what is believed to be the largest privately held and fully curated film poster archive in history, comprising more than 45,000 works. After deaccessioning this archive in 2016, Cleveland now retains personal holdings of approximately 4,750 posters, lobby cards, and “coming attraction” glass slides, the vast majority of which are unique or one of just a few works from across the scope of film history. Together with the collection’s recent showcase at the Norton Museum, the publication of “Cinema on Paper” offers an unprecedented look at some of the most visually engaging and historically significant works from these holdings,
providing an opportunity to reconsider these promotional objects as a popular art form unto themselves, one that distinctively tracks the cultural, historical, and artistic developments of the 20th century. The first book ever released by Assouline to focus on film posters, “Cinema on Paper” includes a foreword by Turner Classic Movies Primetime host Ben Mankiewicz (grandson of Citizen Kane screenwriter Joseph Mankiewicz), as well as an introduction by former New York Times Book Review editor and noted design scholar Steven Heller. Mankiewicz’s essay notes that “movie posters represent what is perhaps the purest collision of art and commerce. They are imbued with optimism and filled with the escapist thrill of what we imagine the screen holds in store for us: romance, adventure, laughter, betrayal, tragedy, justice, redemption, truth.” The publication reproduces more than 100 works from Cleveland’s collection, including promotions for such iconic Hollywood classics as “King Kong,” “Casablanca,” “The Godfather,” and “2001: A Space Odyssey,” as well as more obscure works such as the 1958 teen exploitation film High School Hellcats. Several of the American movie posters featured in the book appear alongside European or Asian editions advertising the same film, highlighting the collection’s geographic breadth and inviting readers to reflect on diverse visual approaches to movie marketing across cultural contexts. As mass-produced objects of popular art drawn from nearly every decade of the 20th century, each poster in the collection provides a distinctive snapshot of the historical and social conditions from which it originated.
The works featured in “Cinema on Paper” encompass nearly 100 years of film distribution, from posters featured in 1910s Paris through the release of the American independent film “Secretary” in 2002. The book includes several works that are believed to be the only extant copies in existence, including a large-scale German-language advertisement for the Oscarwinning film “Grand Hotel” (1932); a title card from the late silent-era classic “Manhattan Cocktail” (1928), directed by Dorothy Arzner; a lobby card from “Hallelujah!” (1929), the first African American film released by a major studio; and a lobby-card portrait of a reclining Nazimova from Oscar Wilde’s scandalous “Salome´” (1922), which was made by an exclusively gay and lesbian cast and crew. These images are accompanied by contextual annotations that invite readers to evaluate them not as promotional objects but as freestanding works of graphic art. Many of the posters featured in “Cinema on Paper” also appeared in the Norton exhibition, “Coming Soon: Film Posters from the Dwight M. Cleveland Collection,” which was held from July to October 2019. Co-organized by guest curator Matthew Bird and Norton assistant curator J. Rachel Gustafson, the exhibition focuses on 215 posters selected from Cleveland’s collection, with a particular emphasis on works from the classical Hollywood studio era. Accompanied by a series of educational programs, workshops, and other interpretative opportunities that highlight the works’ artistic dimensions,
