Hundreds of customers braved the cold to invade the Bricker Building at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 26 and 27 for a new Scott Antique Markets adventure. Shoppers browsed through thousands of unique items available for sale. In one row, customers flipped through vintage

multiplication flash cards, tried on jewelry in various animal shapes, looked at a stack of mirrors, and picked out various vintage kitchen items. In another row, customers checked out a row of rocking chairs, clock mechanisms, vintage postcards, and live edge wooden tables. A group of shoppers were Continued on page 2

This Johannes Spitler paint-decorated chest sold at a Hurley online-only auction for $40,962.50. The buyer, Rod Graves of Luray, Va., intends to have the chest restored (it is missing one rear foot) and to display it in the Luray Valley Museum. An old, relatively unknown collection surfaced at Hurley Auctions, of Greencastle, Pa., which belonged to the late Chester Wayne Miller of Boonsboro, Md. Hurley held multiple sales to settle the estate, given the enmorous quantity of things. The fifth and final one was an onlineonly auction, which ended Jan. 19, encompassing extensive Civil War and other militaria material. The star of the final sale was undoubtedly a rare Johannes Spitler paint-decorated blanket chest with stylized birds and floral

designs. Bidders traveled from near and far to view this rarity (discovered in Miller’s mobile home), which closed at a final selling price of $40,962.50. The buyer, Rod Graves of Luray, Va., intends to have the chest restored (it is missing one rear foot) and plans to display it in the Luray Valley Museum. The museum’s mission is to chronicle the history of the Shenandoah Valley and is located at Luray Caverns, which hosts half a million visitors yearly. Continued on page 6

pouring over boxes and binders of old photographs looking for a unique piece to add to their collections. In the next aisle, a rack of vintage clothing was being combed through by a mother and daughter. One shopper stopped in her tracks to look at a brilliant orange stacking canister set for flour, coffee, tea, and sugar. Many shoppers found success and went home with amazing pieces. Beautiful glassware, rare comic books, vintage toys, unique art, and classic furniture were taken to new homes to be used and admired. One customer walked out with a cart full of knickknacks for her home, including a statue, a painting, and various other items. Another carried out a violin, complete with case. Yet another customer had his hands full with a large box of tools on his way out the door. For shoppers looking for that next great item, whether it’s a new coffee table or

The Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., is celebrating Hearts and Shamrocks this month with a special sales display dedicated to the upcoming holidays of St. Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. The centerpiece of “Be My Valentine” is a brilliant collection of vintage valentines, decorative items and jewelry surrounded by an elegant Cambridge Crown Tuscan bowl. Timeless antique lockets, cameos, sparkling Weiss pins and sterling bangles will make wonderful gifts for her, while vintage cuff links, pocket knives and watches will suit his style. Set a romantic table with cut glass or ruby red wine glasses, sparkling candlesticks and china patterned with roses. Looking for a gift for a

friend? Consider a good book better yet, make it a cookbook and prepare a wonderful meal to share. A rose is a rose. Or is it? Traditionally the color of the roses represents the intent of the giver: red of course for love, pink for appreciation and yellow for friendship. Be creative and select a lovely antique or vintage vase to accompany a bouquet of flowers. With more than 200 vases from which to choose, the Grist Mill is the place to find anything from cut crystal to art pottery. A vase can be cherished for many years to come. Luck of the Irish. Shamrocks, the national flower of Ireland, adorn a fine

selection of Belleek porcelain vases and Royal Tara keepsakes in the sales display. These iconic patterns embody the spirit and charm of Ireland and make perfect gifts for both St. Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick Day.

The Grist Mill is only a click away. Visit the Grist Mill on Facebook and Instagram for information on the most recent events and weekly sales. Shop at the Grist Mill on eBay, where the shop has

more than 450 exclusive items listed. Special requests are a speciality. Looking for a hard-tofind or rare item to complete a collection? Contact the store during its open hours to go on the wish list. This list goes out to Grist Mill dealers so they can stay on the lookout, and it is regularly updated. Upcoming events include the February scavenger hunt, to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and a prize will be awarded to the person who finds the most items. The Grist Mill multidealer shop is located at 127 Hanover St. (Route 616) in Pemberton, N.J., and is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Wednesdays until 8 p.m. For more information, visit www.gristmillantiques.com.

Palmer Museum Of Art To Host Exhibition Of Teacher And Abstract Artist Robert Reed “Subjective Spaces” Marks First Show Of The Year For University’s Museum The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State recently opened its first exhibition of the 2019 season, titled “Subjective Spaces: Drawings and Collages by Robert Reed.” The intimate retrospective features 16 selections from Reed’s drawings and collages that are rich in the geometric nonobjectivity, born almost exclusively within the imagination, that marked his entire career. Born in Charlottesville, Va., Robert Reed (1938–2014) served as a faculty member in Yale University’s School of Art teaching painting and drawing for nearly 50 years. What Collecting Categories I Consider To Be Flat As We Enter 2019 from the 1970s and earlier comics is slowly unwinding. Note that this has not affected most of the infamous keys (i.e. Action Comics #1, Detective Comics # 27, or other highly sought-after key issues from the silver age or earlier), but second-tier keys and speculative books based off of comic book movies are falling in price. This trend will continue, and most of these books will drop back down to more affordable prices. The same can be said of over-hoarded and lesser-important books from the 1980s and later. The bubble is starting to break, folks. Use caution. Advice to novice collectors and investors: A wait-and-see attitude is in order. Many speculators and investors have incorrectly linked comic books with high-end antiques over the past decade. This was based off of speculative hype and not fundamentals. The market is starting to correct and will slowly continue to do so with some ebbs and flows.

Future generations will not pursue comic books like past generations have. 4. Vintage Video Games and Systems The speculative bubble that brought most Nintendo and later video game systems from the 1980s and later is on shaky ground. Cash-strapped publishers are starting to realize that their past video game catalogs are pure gold, and as a result, they are releasing more and more of their back catalogs. Nintendo is doing an excellent job at causing speculators great harm. Both the NES Classic System release and its popular Amiibo line have an element of scarcity due to how it markets its products. Collectors are growing tired of chasing an original rare game for hundreds of dollars when they can simply download it on a new console for about $5. Take advantage of the falling prices. Advice to novice collectors and investors: Until the day that all video games are solely

In my last two articles, we looked at five collecting categories that were on an uptrend as we enter 2019 and five more that have been on a significant downward spiral. A question I regularly get asked is what collecting categories I feel are simply not moving upward or downward, but instead treading water. I classify these categories as being neutral. Listed below are my top contenders, and keep in mind, this can change any time. As I have repeated many times, the only constant in the antiques and collectibles trade is change. Kindly note that I have placed all nostalgia and emotion aside when constructing this list. You will see from this list that most of these categories are routinely discussed in my columns, and their popularity at present time should not influence your decision to start collecting or enjoying

these items. Instead, should you attempt to invest in any of these areas, use logic instead of emotion. Contrary to popular belief, the top 1 percent of any market should not define what a market is doing for 99 percent of all collectors. Be careful when auction houses announce record-breaking sales or how much a particular collecting category did at auction. Sales of extremely rare and in-demand items do not define a collecting category as a whole, nor should they. With those caveats in mind, here are my choices as we enter 2019. 5. Graded Vintage and Modern Comic Books Regular readers will know that in 2015, I made the decision to sell off about 30 key vintage CGC graded comic books from my personal collection. I do not miss the books and am happy they found a new home. As I contemplate selling several more, an obvious trend has developed. The speculative market surrounding highgrade, key vintage comic books

record, I don’t think most of the current sets on the market will appreciate significantly over the next decade or more. 2. Vintage/Antique Art Glass and Pottery Tiffany glass is and will always be a favorite of mine, but sadly, prices are somewhat flat for most pieces. The same can be said for most Rookwood and Wedgwood pottery. I don’t think this will be the case forever, though, as the downtrend occurred in the midst of the 2008-09 financial crisis. Advice to novice collectors and investors: The jury is still out as to whether items like Tiffany glass and Rookwood pottery will be sought after by tomorrow’s collectors. That said, I do see a turnaround in this market at some point, especially in regards to Tiffany glass. If you are looking to build a collection in this market, you should be able to find values on all but the rarest and most coveted pieces. Do your research and take your time. 1. Mid-Grade Art High-end art continues to be a popular asset class of the

sold as digital downloads only, I have very little hope in the vintage video game craze that has started to decline over the past few years. Use caution if investing significant sums in this area of the market. 3. Contemporary Licensed Lego Sets and Minifigures Sorry to say, but the golden goose of the speculative market is just about holding on. Lego overproduced a lot of its most popular sets based on franchises like “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter,” and now speculators are stuck with a glut of inventory that is slow to move and appreciate in value. Almost everyone I know is and was speculating in Lego at one time or another. Competition is fierce, and almost every major retailer has had the newest sets from the past few years on clearance. Advice to novice collectors and investors: The expensive exclusive sets still have a market, but for how long no one knows. Parting out sets for resale can be a nightmare, but if you are up to the challenge the website www.BrickLink.com is your best friend. For the

Lou Gehrig Collection, Historic Bats, Iconic Ali Robes To Lead Heritage Auctions Nearly 900-Lot Sale Features Heaviest Trading Card Offering In Hobby’s Premier Event Heritage Auctions’ Platinum Night sales have a long history as the most dangerous threat to standing world record prices, and experts expect more to fall. No fewer than 17 lots are expected to record prices of six or seven figures. Bidding is now open for the sale, which will close its extended bidding format on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and 24, on www.HA.com/50011.

This 1924 Babe Ruth first home run of season game-used and signed bat with extraordinary provenance, PSA/DNA GU 10, is estimated at $2 million-up.

The historic bat which Pete Rose surpassed Ty Cobb for sole ownership of the career hits record, number 4,192, is estimated at $600,000-up.

The most impressive and extensive supply of Platinum Night trading cards includes a near-set of autographed 1933 Goudeys, a 1910 Old Mill Joe Jackson (est. $300,000-up), multiple examples of the 1952 Topps Mantle (est. $400,000 to $60,000, based on grade) and a vast expanse of unopened wax and cello cards (est. $80,000-up). Other highlights include a stunning original 1889 Cap Anson and Buck Ewing “Burke Ale” beer advertising poster, looking as fresh as the day it came off the press (est. $150,000-up). A 1903 BreischWilliams E107 Christy Mathewson rookie card, SGC 50 VG/EX 4, (est. $150,000-up), is another expected highlight; an extraordinarily rare teamsigned 1927 New York Yankees photograph, (est. $250,000up); and Babe Ruth’s 1933 final

Exhibit At The Met On View In Michael Rockefeller Wing This current exhibition celebrates the creative ingenuity of Polynesian artists who drew from the natural world to give material expression to their understanding of the divine. Drawn from American collections and the Met’s own holdings, “Atea: Nature and Divinity in Polynesia” will showcase some 30 works of figural sculpture, painted barkcloth, rare featherwork, and more, dating from the late 18th to the 19th century. The presentation will offer visitors an opportunity to understand a core principle of Pacific art that the divine is not abstract but very much alive in nature. Atea is a Polynesian cosmological term that refers to a mythical moment in ancestral time when light was believed to have sparked forth after many eons of thick, engulfing darkness. This resulted in the birth of the first generation of gods. Across Polynesia, ritual artifacts were created for powerful chiefs who descended from these gods and who, as political and religious leaders, were imbued with the spiritual essence (mana) of their forbears. Prestige items such as feather cloaks and headdresses not only reinforced their status and reputation but also the genealogical connection with their divine ancestors. The exhibition is organized chronologically in three sections. The first section,

This ritual dish (Daveniyaqona) is early 19th century, from Fiji, made of wood, courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, purchase, 2017 benefit fund, Gordon Sze, MD, the Richman Family Foundation, and Steven Kossak gifts, Andrea Bollt bequest, in memory of Robert Bollt Sr. and Robert Bollt Jr., and the Ruddock Foundation for the Arts gift, 2018 (2018.433). “Ancestral Homelands,” presents key ritual artifacts from the islands of Fiji and Tonga that are the earliest distillation of a distinctly Polynesian ideology. Works on view include a superbly executed figural sculpture of the female goddess Hikule’o, guardian of Pulotu, the watery underworld that remains to this day an important place of origin for islanders, a god house constructed completely from coconut cord fiber, an impressive painted barkcloth, and regalia carved from highly coveted whale ivory and pearl shell. The second section of the

exhibition, “Propping up the Sky,” focuses on the dynamism of ritual artworks from central and eastern Polynesia. Here, important deities from Mangareva and the Cook Islands are presented alongside exquisitely carved ceremonial staffs from the Austral Islands and an impressive breastplate from Tahiti made of feather, shark tooth, and dog hair. The final section, “Divine Chiefs,” features masterworks created for the elite ruling class of Hawaii at the extreme north of the region. An important ancestral sculpture of the Hawaiian deity Lono will be presented for the first time in decades alongside intricately woven fiber works and a remarkable feather cape (’ahu ‘ula) that once belonged to Kamehameha I and represents the highpoint of the Hawaiian feather and fiber art genre. The exhibition is organized by Dr. Maia Nuku, Evelyn A. J. Hall and John A. Friede associate curator of Oceanic Art in the Met’s Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. The exhibit is located in Gallery 359, Michael C. Rockefeller Wing. The Metropolitian Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the country, has three locations, the main one situated at 1000 Fifth Ave. in New York City.

“The Rise Of Everyday Design: The Arts And Crafts Movement In Britain and America” Exhibition Charts The History And Relevance Of The Arts And Crafts Design Movement A detailed look at the history of the Arts and Crafts movement is the focus of a new exhibition at the University of Texas at Austin. Displayed at the Harry Ransom Center from Saturday, Feb. 9, through Sunday, July 14, “The Rise of Everyday Design: The Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain and America” examines how the ideas of Arts and Crafts reformers, influential to this day, transformed the homes and lives of ordinary people in the 19th and 20th centuries. With more than 250 books, drawings, furniture pieces, decorative arts objects, photographs and advertising ephemera, the exhibition appeals to anyone with an interest in architecture and design, including professionals, enthusiasts and those interested in the antecedents of lifestyle branding and today’s maker movement. It is organized into three main sections. “The Birth of the Arts and Crafts Idea” considers the founding ideals of designers and theorists in Britain, “The Arts and Crafts in America” shows how the principles of the movement crossed the Atlantic Ocean,

and “The Postwar Legacy” explores the persistence of the American Arts and Crafts movement beyond World War II. This narrative highlights the contributions of Alice and Elbert Hubbard and The Roycrofters, William Morris and The Kelmscott Press, John Ruskin, Gustav Stickley, Frank Lloyd Wright, bungalow culture and a burgeoning do-it-yourself craft movement. Visitors will learn how the movement’s theorists and makers spread their ideas through books, retail showrooms and world’s fairs. Concerned with the daily realities of the Industrial Age, they used design to envision and promote a new and improved way of living. The movement was transformed as its tenets of simple design, honest use of materials and social value of handmade goods were widely adopted and commodified by large companies. The exhibition explores how these objects, originally handmade and costly, came to be manufactured and sold to the everyday consumer. Christopher Long, professor of history and theory in UT’s School of Architecture, and Monica Penick, associate professor in the Department of Design in the School of Design and C r e a t i v e Technologies, curated the exhibition. “The exhibition’s distinction is its emphasis on the Arts and Crafts’ transformation from a movement that made handcrafted objects for the well-todo to a popular phenomenon of mass-manufacHerbert Rose Barraud’s John Ruskin albumen print (cab- tured, inexpeninet card, signed) was from 1882 from an album assem- sive pieces sold bled by Helmut Gernsheim, c. 1950, courtesy of the through retail like Gernsheim Collection, purchase, 964:0465:0107, the outlets Sears, Roebuck Harry Ransom Center.

& Co.,” said Penick. “The Arts and Crafts idea persisted long after it is usually said to have expired, well into the 1950s and ’60s. The Ransom Center, with its wide-ranging collections of both British and American art, architecture and design, is ideally suited to tell this story.” Items from the center’s collections include handdrawn designs and sketches by Ruskin and Morris, books and marketing materials of the Kelmscott and Roycroft presses, stained glass designs by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones and plates from Wright’s Wasmuth portfolio. These are complemented by photographs, furniture and decorative arts objects from the university’s Alexander Architectural Archives; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and private collections. “Viewers will see many objects that are seldom shown, including unique documents and rare sales catalogs and brochures,” said Long. “The Rise of Everyday Design: The Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain and America” exhibition is accompanied by a catalog of the same title. Published by Yale University Press in association with the Ransom Center and edited by Penick and Long, it features essays such as “The Kelmscott Press and the Modern Popular Book,” “The Arts and Crafts Knock-Off and U.S. Intellectual Property Law” and “The Sears Modern Home.” Visitors can view the freeof-charge exhibition on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended Thursday hours until 7 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the galleries are open from noon to 5 p.m. Free docent-led tours are offered daily at noon, Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. About the Harry Ransom Center The Ransom Center is an internationally renowned humanities research library and museum at the University of Texas at Austin. The members of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA), one of the largest auctioneer associations in the U.S., gathered in Harrisburg from Jan. 8 through 11 to meet, greet and grow their businesses during the 71st annual conference. The membership of the PAA is made up of auction professionals who are passionate about the industry. Outgoing PAA president Tim Keller of Lancaster unveiled not only an updated logo this year, but also a new website. “The update was long overdue,” stated Keller of H.K. Keller. The website can be found at the same address, www.paauctioneers.org, and is now more user-friendly and easier to keep current. For the public, an auctioneer search in the users area can easily be done using search words or a map. Auction searches are also easy to do. For members, the site will allow them to list all of their auctions, photos and details. In attendance during the four-day event were hundreds of auction professionals, including auctioneers, apprentices, auction students, support personnel, vendors, and presenters. All had access to numerous educational seminars during the course of the event that will allow them to better serve their buyers, sellers and the industry as a whole. Continuing education points were available to the many auctioneers who maintain advanced auctioneer certifications or auctioneer licenses held in other states requiring education. On Jan. 11, Keller passed the presidential gavel to Jeffery Pennington of New Castle. Pennington, of Jeff Pennington Auction Service, was the chairperson of the 2019 conference. Nineteen presenters offered a wealth of information. Many of PAA’s own members shared their expertise on the following topics: Facebook Marketing (Mike Keller and Tiffany Earnest); Contract Auctioneering (Matt Hostetter); Real Estate Tips (Matt Hurley); Boot Camp to the Big Stage (Patrick Morgan); Understanding Your Competition (Tim Keller); and a lecture called Bid Calling Critique (Matt Hurley and Matt Hostetter). The organization also brought in a wide variety of outside specialists with presentations such as Towing and Hauling Regulations (Kevin Havern, retired PA state trooper); more in-depth training for existing users of Auction Flex and Wavebid; Ringman Skills (Sam Grasso); Digital and Print Marketing (Jenny Gamblin of Shearer Printing); Secrets of Salesmanship (Timothy Sweet, a professor at Grove City College); The Auctioning of History (Bob Lucas, historian); Selling Firearms at Auction (Jean Zabel, former ATF officer on behalf of the National Shooting Sports Foundation); PA Bedding and Upholstery Law (Christina Slaybaugh of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry); Various Legal Subjects (George Michak, PAA legal counsel); Principles and Business (Earl Springer of Sheetz Inc.); and the National Auctioneers Association President Tim

Charles Cabot’s Film Star Postcards Penny-In-The-Slot Postcards From 1950s New Zealand By Christopher Moor Charles Cabot’s penny-inthe-slot film star postcards from the mid-1950s were produced in New Zealand during an era when little domestically produced movie memorabilia was available for movie fans and collectors in the country. Collectors had to rely on mostly imported items for their collections. “Screen Parade” was the country’s only movie magazine and had folded following the November 1954 issue. The publication “Cinema, Stage & TV” did not premiere until July 1956. Charles Cabot (1890-1978) was a theatrical agent and promoter who worked in Wellington, the capital city, where film distribution companies held their New Zealand headquarters in the 1950s. He probably obtained the photographs used on his postcards from contacts in these offices. Cabot lived in the industrial borough of Petone, about seven miles away from Wellington. His postcards are best remembered from the annual summer ChristmasNew Year carnivals on the Petone Recreation Ground, from 1954 onwards. Because no production records are known to exist, their history is now reliant on collectors’ memories. Cabot was known to sort the cards manually, to mix them up before placing them in the vending machine. As his postcards appear to have been sold only at carnivals and fairs in the Greater Wellington area, the quantities printed for each card are

small. There is believed to have been 24 different postcards at first, although it was once thought to be only 20. Chris Clement remembers Cabot saying there were 24 different postcards. The subjects included stars from Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros. and UniversalInternational studios. Only 21 of a set of 24 from the 1954-55 Petone carnival has been accounted for, including Marilyn Monroe, Alexis Smith, Joan Evans, Faith Domergue, Maureen O’Hara, June Allyson, Rita Gam, Arlene Dahl, Jean Peters, Jean Simmons, Mona Freeman, Anne Baxter, James Stewart, Donald O’Connor, Joel McCrea, Jeff Chandler, Hopalong Cassidy, Randolph Scott, Stephen McNally, Joseph Cotton, and Roy Rogers. The list contains several names that today would be ranked as screen legends. Rita Gam might be better remembered as one of Grace Kelly’s bridesmaids, when she married Prince Rainier in 1956, and Jean Peters as the third wife of billionaire Howard Hughes from 1957-71. Arlene Dahl’s postcard has her family name spelled as “Dale.” She is the mother of the actor Lorenzo Lamas. Cabot added to and withdrew cards from the selection as the 1950s went on. His later postcards were of players in Universal-International pictures, with the men often dressed as cowboys, such as Glenn Ford, George Nader, and Kirk Douglas, with an exception being a casually dressed

Rock Hudson. The women contained no big names and included pin-ups of Dorothy Malone, Martha Hyer, Colleen Miller, Mamie Van Doren, and Anita Ekberg, as well as glamor portraits of Cornell Borchers, Mara Corday, and Carol Morris, a former Miss Universe. The poses of Richard Long and Kathleen Hughes and Richard Widmark and Donna Reed are the more familiar co-star cards. Because the postcards were unnumbered, it would be impossible to estimate how many different subjects were actually issued. The first postcards were black-and-white, followed by printings in two shades of blue, the first a darker blue, the second a lighter one, before Cabot reverted to black-and-white cards circa 1958-59. His postcards were of similar quality and size to American arcade cards, with dimensions of 3.25-by-5.5 inches. At least three different weights of cardboard were used. Examples of the Jean Simmons and George Nader cards exist with a roughish reverse side, while those of Stephen McNally and Anne Baxter printed on a lighter weight card have an almost smudge-like impression of the image showing through on the reverse. Foxing is often seen on the Jean Peters and Glenn Ford postcards. Although the postcards usually had nothing printed on the reverse, those for Martha Hyer, Richard Long, and Kathleen Hughes have

Noted Philantropist, Conservationist And Arts Supporter Died Jan. 14 It is with great sadness that the trustees of the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art announce the death of Phyllis Mills Wyeth on Jan. 14. She was an early and major supporter of the fledgling Tri-County Conservancy, which became the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art, and was a founding member of its board. In addition to her work with the Brandywine, she was a noted philanthropist, conservationist, environmentalist, arts supporter, accomplished horsewoman and a staunch advocate for the rights of the handicapped and disabled. Born in New York City on Nov. 13, 1940, Phyllis Mills Wyeth was the daughter of the late James and Alice du Pont

Mills. Wyeth grew up outside of Middleburg, Va., on Burnt Mill Farm, adjacent to Hickory Tree Farm, a renowned thoroughbred breeding, training and racing facility founded by her parents. The Mills family raised, owned and raced several top stakes winners such as “Devil’s Bag,” “Believe It” and “Gone West.” Growing up with a love for horses and Steeplechase events, Wyeth competed in several local point-to-point races as a teenager. While a life-altering auto accident left her disabled at age 20, Wyeth’s spirit remained ever determined, steadfast and positive throughout her entire life. Her passion for horses and racing continued, with Wyeth becoming a well-known and respected carriage driver and an

accomplished thoroughbred horse breeder and owner. At her racing stable in Chadds Ford, Pa., Wyeth bred the famed horse “Union Rags,” a fourth-generation descendant of her family’s breeding program. “Union Rags” would later become Wyeth’s dream come true champion horse and winner of the Belmont Stakes in 2012. After graduating from the Ethel Walker School, Wyeth majored in political science at Finch College and later attended the Columbia School of Social Work. She worked for then-U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy and later in the White House with President Kennedy’s special assistant. In 1968, she married artist Jamie Wyeth of Chadds Ford, son of Andrew Wyeth and

grandson of N. C. Wyeth. The couple lived on their 240-acre Point Lookout Farm, purchased by Phyllis Wyeth’s great grandfather in 1903, on the Pennsylvania-Delaware border. During the summer months, the couple resided at their home on Southern Island in Maine. Nearby in Port Clyde, Maine, Wyeth founded the Herring Gut Learning Center in 1999. Inspired by her mother, Alice du Pont Mills, who was also an environmental activist and lifelong philanthropist, Wyeth led her life with a dedication to the environment and giving back to her community. Wyeth created Herring Gut Learning Center with the goal of teaching local children about aquaculture and marine conservation and to help preserve Maine’s traditional

and assisting with the National Very Special Arts Festival. She also served on multiple boards, including the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art, the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Mary Chichester duPont Foundation, the National Resources Defense Council, and as Trustee Emeritus of the Herring Gut Learning Center. She was appointed to the National Endowment for the Arts and Handicapped Advisory Task Force to the White House Conference on Handicapped Individuals and served on the President’s Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped. In the coming weeks, the Brandywine River Museum of Art will host a selection of paintings of Phyllis Wyeth by her husband, Jamie, as a special tribute exhibition. The museum is located on U.S. Route 1, Chadds Ford, Pa.

fishing communities. Wyeth was later awarded the NOAA Fisheries Environmental Hero award in 2002 for her efforts with the organization. Wyeth and her husband, Jamie, were also one of the first to grant a conservation easement to the Brandywine Conservancy in 1969, preserving 44.5 acres of their land along the west bank of the Brandywine River, permanently protecting it from development. Wyeth had an extraordinary career in public service, both advocating for the arts and for the rights of the disabled. She worked as a teacher for the Terry Children’s Psychiatric Center in Wilmington, Del., and spent many years in Washington, D.C., working as a consultant for the National Endowment for the Arts, as vice chairperson of the National Committee on Arts for the Handicapped (now known as VSA, the international organization on arts and disability),
