Stephenson’s To Auction Sally Goodman’s Antiques With Few Exceptions, New Hope, Pa., Dealer’s Sale Will Be Unreserved Quality stock from long-established New Hope, Pa., antiques dealer Sally Goodman will be auctioned on Friday, Feb. 19, at Stephenson’s suburban Philadelphia gallery. A member of the Bucks County Antiques Dealers Association, Goodman has been active in the trade since 1978. Throughout the years, she has maintained a flagship store from a quaint stone farmhouse on Ferry Street in New Hope, but she has also sold from

satellite stores and multi-dealer galleries at various other locations. Among those other establishments was Goodman’s country antiques shop in Lambertville, a popular destination for antique buyers from around the Northeast and MidAtlantic region. Goodman closed the shop in 1995 and moved its entire contents to the New Hope premises, where they have remained ever since in a climatecontrolled annex. “Like any busy dealer with a retail establishment, space is at a premium. Sally has a very interesting store, but at this point in time, she simply has too much of a good Continued on page 2

Sunday, Feb. 21. On view at the Barnes through Monday, May 9, this exhibition examines the dramatic fluctuations in Picasso’s style during the period surrounding the First World War, from 1912 to 1924. The show brings together some 50 works by the artist from major American and European museums and private collections, including paintings, drawings, watercolors, and costumes designed for the avant-garde ballet, Parade; and several pieces by his friends and contemporaries. Unlike other members of the Parisian avant-garde, Picasso never directly addressed World War I as a subject in his art. Instead, he began experimenting with naturalistic representation, turning out classical figure drawings that outraged many of his avant-garde colleagues. This was quite a shift from the radical cubist approach he had been developing since 1907. Picasso did not give up cubism, however. Instead, he shuttled back and forth between two different styles for over a decade, breaking forms Continued on page 2

While the auction selection is mixed, much of it consists of country antiques, a category that has long been one of Goodman’s specialties. The inventory includes 100 lots of furniture, plus stoneware crocks, primitives, artworks and cabinet smalls of great variety. “Very few items in the sale have been assigned a reserve,” said Stephenson. The exhibition looks closely at the strange ambivalence characterizing Picasso’s wartime production, exploring it in connection with changes to his personal life, with his misgivings about cubism, and with the political meanings ascribed to cubism during the war. The exhibition is curated by Simonetta Fraquelli, an independent curator and specialist in early 20th-century Europan art. The managing curator at the Barnes is Martha Lucy. stories in modern day collecting. While it is true that well over 95 percent of all video games will never be worth more than their original retail price; that other 5 percent of the market more than makes up for it. Games that could easily be obtained for vintage Nintendo systems back in the mid-1990s for just a few dollars are now achieving three to four figures at auction. Unfortunately, speculators have entered this market in droves and new collectors are advised to only buy tired and true collectibles and avoid speculation whenever possible. Ever increasing prices is leading to a rise in investors and speculators which is actually having an adverse affect on this market. Hint to collectors: focus on Nintendo only. Most of the games and systems released by other manufacturers are niche collectibles and lack the staying power of Nintendo and its collection of popular video game franchises that are still going strong today! Remember that today’s classics are tomorrow’s treasures! 1. Licensed Lego factory sealed sets and minifigures. You only need to know three words about this market that should give new collectors and investors caution. Those words are speculation, speculation, and mass speculation. Lego investing became a buzzword created by the media in 2015. The year 2016 is the year of unknowns. Will the Lego secondary market be able to survive the glut of new investors, collectors, and hoarders that are coming into the market and hoarding factory sealed sets for when they go out of production? Will Lego continue to cannibalize these resellers by rereleasing some of the most popular sets in the company’s history? Time will tell, but as of right now both the Lego Star Wars and Lego Super Heroes lines are on fire with prices increasing across the board.

In part one of this article I looked at various collecting categories that appear to be losing steam as we head into 2016. While I am sure there are some surprises on that particular list that raise the eyebrows of casual enthusiasts in the trade, I am pleased to inform my readers that this article looks at what collecting categories have been experiencing exponential growth as we head into the new year. In an upcoming article, I plan to address the changing antiques and collectibles marketplace in greater detail and what these changes mean to collectors, dealers, and auctioneers. Auctioneers especially need to start adjusting to these changing market dynamics. Listed below are the top five collecting categories that experienced exponential growth in 2015 and are poised for massive success in 2016. As noted in previous discussions, this analysis is based on my own opinions and observations. You are welcome to disagree, but please do so at your own risk. Now onto the list! 5. Vintage coin-operated machines of all types. Blame it on the “American Pickers” television show. Blame it on entertainment machine manufacturers who no longer see a valid business in manufacturing arcade and pinball games. Regardless, all types of vintage and antique coin operated games are experiencing increased growth and demand. The two most popular categories appear to be vintage and antique gambling devices and vintage pinball machines made after 1975. Collectors are urged to use caution with vintage video games as these are not experiencing the same growth as antique slot machines and vintage pinball games. This is due to the fact that unlike pinball and slot machines, arcade video games are easily emulated on more powerful home computers and video game consoles. There is absolutely no reason to own a popular arcade video game that can easily be played in full on a home video game console, computer, or

smart phone. The real money is in entertainment devices that cannot easily be replicated on another device. Both pinball and slot machines enjoy this luxury and continue to experience moderate growth. 4. Vintage advertising and related collectibles. Ironically, I place the blame on “American Pickers” for helping to contribute to this phenomenon. This collecting category proves the theory that younger collectors collect what they know. What can be more prominent throughout an individual’s youth than that of Coca-Cola and Pepsi? Soda advertising based collectibles and advertising is making a huge comeback. What is even more surprising in this growth category is how much collectors are willing to pay for more recent advertising based on other popular collecting categories. Prices such as $500 to $1,500 for an original Nintendo advertising sign from 1989? Check. A vintage Nintendo ‘Super Mario’ statue for $700? Check. The growth of this collecting field has yet to reach its full potential and when video game and Lego collectors begin looking for that one-of-kind piece to accent their game rooms and collecting dens, this category is going to explode even further into the mainstream. 3. Vintage toys and action figures from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. Forget your Star Wars figures made after 1990. They were overproduced and hoarded en masse. The real money is in vintage toys from the ’70s and ’80s and new properties like Jurassic Park and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that graced store shelves in the early 1990s. Vintage Star Wars toys from the original Kenner toy line have seen exponential growth. The average cost of an original 12-back Star Wars action figure mint on its card from the 1970s has literally tripled in price from just six years ago and is still increasing! Expect massive growth in all the popular toy lines from these eras. Auctioneers take note as younger collectors are actively buying mint and factory fresh toys from this time period and they are also looking for deals. 2. Nintendo video games and systems from all eras. This is one of the greatest success

Heroes lines attract. These are my picks for the top five collecting categories that are poised to experience the most growth in 2016. If 2015 was any indication, it’s going to be an exciting year!

Hawaii Calls: Captivating Island Collectibles By Donald-Brian Johnson Pineapple-rum concoctions in Tiki-head mugs, ukuleles in full strum, Don Ho and “Tiny Bubbles,” “Lovely Hula Hands.” When the weather’s wintry, thoughts turn to warmer climes, like Hawaii! And, when thoughts turn to Hawaii, the next stop is invariably “Hawaiiana.” Whether authentic island wares, or made-inJapan kitsch, Hawaiian collectibles are guaranteed to send spirits soaring (especially when temperatures outside are plummeting). Travelers from Tonga and Samoa were the first to settle the Hawaiian Islands, arriving between 500-750 A.D. The first “tourist” (broadly speaking) was English explorer Captain James Cook, who reached Hawaiian shores in 1778. With an onslaught of determined missionaries reaching Hawaii in the 1820s, “westernization” of the islands was underway. The hula (a dance combining elements of legend, history, and religious practice) was dismissed as “too sensual.” And

Brown dog photo is courtesy of Creative Commons Pottery Spaniels by Smabs Sputzer, used under CC BY. White dog photos are property of the author. At A Glance: Signs of a reproduction: 1. Less detail than antique originals. 2. Gold accents are too bright. 3. Asian look to the eyes. 4. Identical paint work. 5. Deliberately darkened crazing. Reference books, websites and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. Antique Staffordshire spaniels generally had bases with very small (about an eighth of an inch) ventilation holes. Some (but not all) modern pieces have no bases or bases with larger holes. Also check to see that the base glaze has the same aged look as the rest of the piece - sometimes modern reproductions are falsely aged on the spaniel’s body but not underneath. Staffordshire spaniels were made in pairs that faced in opposite directions, so if you find a pair facing the same direction or a single spaniel, you know you don’t have the original set. Unless a piece is obviously modern, a multi-pronged approach is best for authentication. And as with other collectibles, buying a reproduction is fine as long as it’s being sold and priced as such.

S917582

Few decorative items have withstood the test of time with such strength as Staffordshire dog figures. Those proud cottage canines have graced mantelpieces since the 1840s and always seem to appear in today’s gracious homes steeped in traditional interior design. However, their enduring popularity places them comfortably in all home styles - just one reason why they’re among the most heavily reproduced figurines worldwide. Originally, Staffordshire spaniels warmed the hearts of Englanders because spaniels were favorite pets of royalty since the reign of King Charles II (who almost always had a few of his King Charles Spaniels with him) in the 17th century. But it was Queen Victoria’s spaniel, Dash, who inspired potters to make figurines. Spaniels appear in many painted portraits and even on tapestries throughout the centuries. Victorian women stitched cushions with portraits of Queen Victoria’s pup. Perhaps not surprisingly, plenty of folklore surrounds these hearth spaniels. One legend says that the positioning of these dog pairs in windows would tell a woman’s lover whether her husband was home or not. If the dogs faced each other, it was safe for her lover to pay a call. There have even been Scottish poems written about them - “The Wally Dug” (another of the many terms used) is a particularly fun, warm read. It can be difficult to precisely date antique Staffordshire spaniels or even determine their maker because they were produced in large quantities by lots of different factories. On top of that, many times potteries would sell their molds when they ceased spaniel figurine production or closed, so the same mold could be used for well over a decade by different makers. Sometimes potters would make new molds that were copies of another potter’s design or they would copy the styles of decoration, making dating and attribution extremely difficult. However,

An 1894-S Barber Dime, branch mint PR66 PCGS CAC, the finest known, realized $1,997,500 at auction on Jan. 7 as the centerpiece of Heritage Auctions’ Platinum Night event at the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Convention in Tampa, Fla. It was sold to an experienced collector, who placed their bid online and wishes to remain anonymous. The winning bidder was one of 16 different collectors vying for the piece. “This was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to own one of the most famous, mysterious and elusive coins in American numismatics,” said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. “It’s a classic of American coinage often grouped with the 1804 dollar and the 1913 Liberty nickel as ‘The Big Three’ of U.S. coin rarities. It has been the stuff of collectors’ dreams since attention was first brought to it in 1900.” Only 24 Barber dimes were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1894, apparently in order to balance a bullion account. No more than nine, and possibly only eight, examples of the 1894-S are known to collectors today, with this coin being the finest survivor certified.

Gillian B. Wiederseim of Chester Springs, Pa., and Cape May, N.J., passed away at the age of 60 on Feb. 7, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Jill, as she liked to be called, was a business partner with her husband, Theodore E. Wiederseim, III, managing Wiederseim Associates Inc., an antiques auction and appraisal firm based in Chester Springs, Pa. Jill was a graduate of Downingtown High School and Bennett College in Millbrook, N.Y., where she majored in fashion design. Jill loved gardening, cooking, needlework, antiques, country-western music, and travel. Jill also loved Cape May, N.J., where she and Ted purchased a Victorian home in the Historic District in 2013. Under Jill’s gifted eye, the historic gem was transformed back to its former glory, and she took great delight in hosting and entertaining family and friends. Jill was the daughter of the late Rachel S. Brogan and is survived by her father, John E. Brogan, also of Chester Springs, her husband Theodore, her brother Benjamin Brogan, eight nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends who will miss her dearly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chester County SPCA (www.ccspca.org) or Main Line Animal Rescue of Chester Springs (www.mlar.org).

The class costs $70 for society members and $80 for nonmembers and includes all materials. Advanced registration is required and may be completed by calling 717-393-9745.
