The spacious venue boasts more than 70,000 square-feet of exhibitor space in the Antique Showroom and another 40,000 square-feet for sporting arms, custom knifemakers and firearms engravers. Launched in 1962 by Las Vegas gun collector and dealer Harry Mann, LVAAS is widely regarded as the gold standard among antique firearms shows. It is the oldest

Drawing On A Legacy: Highlights From The John Driscoll American Drawings Collection

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day At The Emporium

Inaugural Exhibition Showcases Recent Gift Of American Works On Paper To Palmer Museum of Art

Home-Cooked Corned Beef And Cabbage To Be Served March 15 Emporium dealer Carol Elliott has graciously agreed to cook her famous corned beef and cabbage for an early St. Patrick’s Day dinner on Sunday, March 15, at the Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium, located at 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J. Customers will be treated to a little bite of Ireland and other snacks, starting at noon. The Emporium dealers will fill the store’s sales show case with items relating to Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day for the month of March. Shoppers can purchase decorations, items for the dinner table, and jewelry. The Emporium is a 14,000square-foot building, home to 65-plus dealers with antiques from the 1800s to the collectibles of today. It is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m. Customers can travel to the Emporium by the River Line, through many historical towns in South Jersey. The ride on the River Line is an architectural treasure trove of historical buildings starting in Camden and finishing in Trenton. Burlington City is the oldest city in the state of New Jersey, having buildings

The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State presents a special exhibition from the recent gift of 140 American works on paper donated by alumnus Dr. John P. Driscoll in 2018. “Drawing on a Legacy: Highlights from the John Driscoll American Drawings Collection” features selections from the expansive gift, one of the most important in the 48-year history of the university’s art museum. “This inaugural exhibition showcases a selection of superlative works from John Driscoll’s recent gift of American works on paper to the Palmer,” said Erin M. Coe, director of the museum. “We at Penn State are so grateful to John for this transformational gift, which will reshape our presentation and interpretation of American art for generations to come.” The John Driscoll American Drawings Collection spans more than 150 years of American art history from 1798 to 1950 and in many ways reflects the wide-ranging scholarly and collecting interests of its namesake. As the first show to highlight the collection, “Drawing on a Legacy” surveys an array of techniques and media, including graphite, charcoal, ink, and watercolor. Through 30 works, the exhibition explores the changing cultural importance of drawing during the socalled “long” 19th century.

dating back to the 1600s. As a young man, Benjamin Franklin had his first print shop in Burlington City. Author James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington City, and President Ulysses Grant had a home in Burlington City on Wood Street. According to the State of New Jersey, the Emporium’s building was built between 1917 and 1924 by Edward Supper and is on the National Resister for Historic Buildings. Automobiles were sold and serviced in this large building until the late 1970s. For anyone interested in history and antiques, both the town and shop make for a fun destination. Happy antiquing.

Selections from this significant group of works include landscape views and botanical sketches, animal scenes and still lifes, as well as portraits and preparatory figure studies. Artists represented include many well-known luminaries of the period, such as John Vanderlyn, William Trost Richards, and Edwin Howland Blashfield, along with lesser-known figures whose work deserves further study. “The museum is pleased to share many of these rare and outstanding American drawings and watercolors with a broad public for the first time,” noted Adam M. Thomas, curator of American art. “The bulk of the gift comprises works before the advent of Modernism and is particularly strong in depictions of nature and the American landscape.” Dr. John P. Driscoll, who earned a master’s degree as well as a Ph.D. in art history from Penn State, is a scholar, collector, gardener, and art dealer based in New York City. His involvement with Penn State’s university art museum dates back nearly 50 years to the summer of 1972, when he began working at the museum as a graduate assistant. He later went on to become the museum’s first official registrar before leaving Penn State to become a curator. In following years, he established

art galleries in Boston and New York, renaming his business Driscoll Babcock in 2012. Today, it is one of New York’s oldest art galleries. He has written extensively on American art and has been the curator, co-curator, or a contributor to exhibitions that have traveled to more than 20 leading museums across the country, including the John William Hill’s “Under the Falls, Niagara,” a ca. and dated “Abner Zook/ Womelsdorf, Pa., 1978.” Prices reported include buyer’s premium. The three-dimensional piece, a combination of intricate painting and sculpture, came from a consignor in Buffalo, N.Y., whose parents had commissioned Abner Zook (1921-2010) for three dioramas. Abner’s identical twin brother, Aaron, did the same work. He died in 2003. The consignor, wisely wanting to sell the three works in the area where they were made, reached out to Witman. The next Zook from the consignor, also a nauticalrelated scene/theme, will be sold by Witman on Saturday, March 7. Zook’s work has a unique auction-only market. Although contemporary, they are not seen at shows. There were 375 in attendance at the auction, where a varied assortment of antiques and collectibles changed hands. A pair of Riverview Dairy (Conestoga, Pa.) milk bottles brought $650, and a G-man tin toy car, $750. Although offensive, this region has long held a market for Nazi memorabilia. A German Nazi helmet realized $500; a dagger, $440; a knife with sheath, $330; and a Luger pistol, $935. To contact Witman Auctioneers, call 717-665-5735.

toys their parents and grandparents played with. Tip to Novice Collectors If collecting, go after items that work and are in excellent to near-mint condition. Lots of deals can be had in this market if you know where to look. Just don’t expect these items to be a worthy financial investment in the future. The market is too murky. 1. Vintage PEZ Dispensers To be fair, vintage PEZ dispensers have been on a notable decline over the past several years, if not longer. Just last year, I noted an ever increasing number of declining values on most once popular vintage dispensers. The few that appear to be bucking this trend are either based on popular super hero franchises or the always in demand Universal Monster PEZ dispensers that premiered in the 1960s. Almost every other vintage dispenser is selling less today than they were in the 1990s. It is a buyer’s market in this collecting category, and I don’t see the market changing any time soon. Tip to Novice Collectors Much like vintage metal lunch boxes, PEZ, while sold today, are not being actively pursued by younger collectors. Younger collectors who choose to collect PEZ are going after the newer and cheaper contemporary dispensers based on present-day super heroes and popular franchises like Nintendo. The market for vintage PEZ is dying a slow death and will not turn around any time soon, if ever.

In my last article, we looked at five collecting categories that are on fire at present time. In this article, we will be looking at five collecting categories that are definitely not hot. It should be noted that these are merely my observations in the trade, so you may agree or disagree with my findings. It is also important to note that most of these items actually sell well at auction, but the devil is in the details. Look at the prices a lot of these collectibles are selling for and then compare those prices over time. Most of the collecting categories on this list have seen massive declines at auction over recent years. 5. Vintage Metal Lunch Boxes Some astute readers and market watchers will note that the vintage metal lunch box trend has been fizzling for several years, but now with the proliferation of millennials being fully active in the trade, I think it is time to realize that this collecting trend is quickly going the way of the Hummel. While it is true that pop culture collectors still fancy these colorful relics, younger collectors just have no connection to them, regardless as to what character or pop culture icon is displayed on the packaging.

U.S.A

based comic books have already softened substantially over the last few years, with few exceptions. Make no mistake that in my humble opinion, the vintage comic book market will weaken over the next few years as more collectors tire over the amount of speculation and would-be investors operating in the market. Even the graded coin marketplace has learned that prices cannot rise exponentially indefinitely. Tip to Novice Collectors Be careful in this market. The market for vintage comic books overall is weakening, while the top 5 to 10 percent of the market continues to do well. Speculators with little knowledge of the collectibles market tend to only focus their attention to the top of the market while only being able to afford to invest in the middle tier. This is a recipe for disaster when investing in any kind of collectible in the long-term. 2. Vintage Japanese Space Toys and Robots from the 1950s and 1960s The market that propelled most of these curiosities to new heights reached its proverbial peak in the early 2000s. Yes, it is true that ultra rare toy robots like Masudaya’s “Gang of Five” continue to be sought after in each and every auction they are offered. Unfortunately, this is not translating to bids on common and lesser known items that struggle to reach or exceed their previous auction highs that occurred years ago. Coupled with the fact that a lot of these robots are no longer in working order, we can see why the collecting world is no longer being enchanted by these items. Expect the market for these to fall even further as younger collectors with limited disposable incomes flock to toys from the 1980s and 1990s but forget about the

Tip for Novice Collectors Prices for most of these relics have been stabilizing over the past few years, and some have been declining. If you are attempting to build a collection and care about these items holding value, it would be wise to go after pop culture icons like “Star Wars” or relevant properties that still have pop culture cache. Very few are going to care about “Gunsmoke” or “The Lone Ranger” decades from now. Just know that from a financial standpoint, most of these items will make bad long-term investments overall. 4. Machine-Made Marbles As a fan of both antique and machine-made marbles, this entry breaks my heart the most, but the market just does not seem to be turning around. Vintage machinemade marbles made by early 20th century companies like Akro Agate and Peltier started to gain prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s because the price of true antique marbles increased drastically in value during this time. Unfortunately, younger collectors on average are just not relating to these elegant glass spheres, and prices have fallen from their overall highs that were achieved a decade or so ago when auction houses like Morphy’s prominently advertised them. The trend has not affected the value for truly scarce antique marbles in high grade, however. Tip for Novice Collectors Antique marbles is where the action is, so if buying for financial investment, start there. Know that most marbles are starting to be seen more as curiosities than true collectibles. Given the rise of post-1980s toys being seen as valid investments in the trade, the market for machine-made marbles of the early 20th century is quite dim and getting dimmer. Perhaps it will one day turn around, but who knows when? Non-Super Hero 3. Vintage Comic Books Make no mistake that popular vintage super hero comic books from the 1930s through the 1970s are still holding their own. This cannot be said about non-super hero vintage comic books. Even once coveted horror comic books such as “Tales from the Crypt” and “Vault of Horror” are not worthy investments anymore. Most of these golden age horror comic books have been republished too many times, and the current trend is vintage super hero comic books that feature the first appearance of a key character. It should room. I was immediately be represented in major museums across the country. And I was amazed to learn that it is largely unknown today. It is what I now consider to be a treasured form of production, adorned in one of the most colorful slip decorations created anywhere in America. A Special Style of

Production from Mason, Ohio Located 23 miles northeast of Cincinnati, in Warren County, Ohio, the city of Mason is named after Revolutionary War veteran Major William Mason (17601830), who purchased 640 acres of land on June 1, 1803. This land now forms the area surrounding downtown Mason today. Originally known as Palmyra, the area would be renamed Mason two years after the Major’s death in 1832, and most recently becoming a city in 1971. The area was largely recognized for its agricultural growth in the 19th century. Warren County also has a Revolutionary War connection. The county was named after Dr. Joseph Warren (174175) from Boston, who died fighting at the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Mass., on June 17, 1775. Warren left a lasting legacy in the American patriotic movement, serving as president of the Revolutionary Massachusetts Provincial Congress and sending Paul Revere (1735-1818) on his infamous midnight ride to Lexington at the dawn of the American Revolution. Warren County is considered one of the earliest pottery production centers in the

Midwest, dating to the early 19th century, and a lot of the area’s production happened around Route 42. Beginning in the early 1800s, this road was known as the Accommodation Stagecoach Line running through much of central Ohio, starting with a historic terminus at the Ohio/Kentucky state line in Cincinnati to Cleveland. The wares were typically transported by horse-drawn wagons in this region, and for some of the potteries, their proximity to this route was important to the success of their business. Among the area’s first group of pioneering potters was George Foglesong (Vogelsang) (1784-1831), who migrated to America from Germany in the late 18th century as an indentured servant to John Snavely in Washington County, Md. He traveled to America to learn about the pottery trade. As part of the arrangement, Foglesong signed a contract with Snavely agreeing to work for him for a particular amount of time. Afterwards, Foglesong relocated to Lebanon, Ohio, where he operated a pottery business as early as 1805, until around the time of his death in 1831. Other red earthenware potters in Lebanon succeeded his production until the 1880s. Elsewhere in the area, Thomas Swift (d. 1836) established a pottery in Waynesville, Ohio, as early as 1808. He is considered to be one of the first Quaker potters in the area, operating his pottery shop behind a brick Federal style house that he The 19th century red earthenware built in 1813. A Celebration Of Life At The Emporium Popular Co-Op Shop Remembers Two Of Its Dealers antiques. Nickerson worked at the Haddonfield Antiques Co-op for 17 years, and after it closed in 2016 moved his business to the Emporium in Burlington City. Sue Couch was one of the Emporium’s original dealers when it opened in 2001. Sue worked for a pharmaceutical company for many years and enjoyed buying and selling antiques on the weekends. Couch always gave extra time

to the Emporium, meeting, greeting, and conversing with the customers. Her smile and laughter will be greatly missed. The Emporium is located at 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J.
