Japanese objects also fared well, and diminut i v e Netsukes proved to be quite popular. A carved boxwood figure of a wild hound, inlaid with ivory eyes, ignored a $300 to $500 estimate to bring $6,900. A lot of two carved wood examples depicting a snail and famed poetess Ono No Komachi went out at $5,290 (estimate $200 to $300). Carved ivory examples included an exceptional and detailed basket vendor laden with his wares that sold for $1,955;

and one of a man carrying a foo dog that sold for $1,610. Each exceeded their clearly conservative $200 to $300 estimates. Day I started things off with over 400 paintings covering American and European artists. Illustration art included an impressive original artwork used for a 1921 Peters shotgun cartridge calendar by Phillip Russell Goodwin. Peters was later sold to the Remington Arms Company in 1934 and this very image was used again for a commemorative calendar by Remingtion in 1983. Picturing four men in their period hunting gear in a cozy hunting camp, it sold for $47,500 against an estimate of $50,000 to $75,000. A pair of action packed works by Gilbert Gaul depicting big game hunters likewise sold within its estimate for $17,250. An equally action packed scene attributed to Arthur Tait of an old west standoff between a frontiersman and a pack of Indians went out at $16,962, surpassing a $7,500 to $12,500 estimate. Several fine European and Continental works included Adolphe Perrot’s outstanding rendition of the monumental cemetery at Cathedral Square in Pisa, Italy. Portraying tremendous sense of perspective and detail of one of the country’s treasured landmarks, it sold for $40,250, exceeding its $5,000 to $10,000 estimate. Austrian artist Wenceslas Von Brozik’s interior scene of an aristocratic family in a lavish room watching the youngest of the group perform a show for the grandparents changed hands at the upper end of its $20,000 to 30,000 estimate for $27,600. And, an impressionistic oil on canvas springtime scene attributed to French artist Camille Pissarro with swirling colors leading to a white cottage went out at $19,550 against a pre-auction estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. Day II continued with a From the Royal Family collection came an exquisite royal carved ivory, abalone and rosewood screen that featured a highly elaborate carved scene known as “Birthday Gathering of the Immortals” depicting a procession of individuals paying homage to central figure. Housed in an inlaid framework, the piece sold for $138,000 within its $100,000 to $150,000 estimate.

Furniture is not as strong as it has been in years past. In fact, today there are extraordinary buys in many forms of antique furniture. For instance, some 18th-century desks or upholstered Victorian furniture will sell for half or a quarter of what it will cost you to buy a modern example of lesser quality. SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Making Sure Things Are “Kept Peter Swift Seibert

This past week I sent two cartons of documents off to institutional archives. The first contained letters that my mother had both sent and received while a college student at Middlebury College in Vermont during World War II. They went back to the Middlebury College Archives and Special Collections. The second group of documents was a large collection of blueprints and supporting materials relating to the construction of a dam project in Idaho in 1912. I purchased them at Adamstown about five years ago thinking I might write about them some day. I never got around to it so I decided that they should be given to the Idaho State Archives. In both cases, the docu-

ments were well received by the respective archives and special collections departments. The folks in Vermont commented that the collection offered a rare and personal insight into the life of a student at the college during the World War II era. The archivist in Idaho noted that the drawings probably belonged to the original project engineer who is now regarded as something of genius and about whom very little is known. In regards to my mother’s papers, I debated about whether my daughters would like them and if I should keep the collection intact for them. I realized, however, that the boxes of materials from her and my grandparents were getting beaten up every time we moved or shifted things around. We are custodians of a fragile and delicate past,

especially when it comes to documents and photograph. An archive with climate controls, Hollinger boxes, and security was better than my library. I knew that in giving mom’s papers to the college that students and scholars would use them in the future and my daughters could go and see them any time. When my time is done, there would be no hard decision about who gets what but rather they could both go to Middlebury and see the documents and get copies of them. The Idaho collection was not personal to me. It was a great flea market find. But as I learned about the engineer who designed these dams in the west, I was glad I sent his papers back home. Why? Because while he designed dams throughout Idaho and Northern California, he

George III Cupboard Will Rise Again This week we valued a British mahogany standing bow front corner cupboard inlaid with boxwood stringing. The stepped cornices above a pair of geometric astragal doors, below are a pair of doors with segmented figured veneers. It dates from the early 19th century and later. This is an elegant example with attractive figuring to the veneer, decorative inlaid stringing and of the less prevalent bow front form in these standing pieces. It has the appearance of dating to the late George III period (1760s to 1800). However it would benefit from first hand inspection as it may be partially re-constructed, based on the images. doors do not appear to belong to this piece. The reverse of the lower doors have an eighteenth-century appearance with wear and ghosting from the proximity of further shelves though their former existence is not apparent on the interior carcase. The floor is clearly later with little wear. This item would have been very sought after during the Georgian revival period at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century when this workshop attention probably occurred. This category has become less sought after in recent years and the auction saleroom prices are much more modest than in the past. The newer generations that are furnishing are swept along in the current fashion for modernism. This will pass and there is likely to be a reappreciation of this Georgian style with strengthening prices though the timing is difficult to predict. We value the cupboard at $800 to $1,200.

Fine art has taken center stage as an investment, and those who aren’t investing in important works are looking for that million-dollar painting hidden in Aunt Bessie’s attic for the last hundred years. Unfortunately, when that discovery never comes, some scammers turn to the next best thing: creating their own “long-lost discovery.” The world of art is replete with fakes and copies - this is nothing new, it’s been going on since ancient times. There are uncountable numbers of such documented cases: ancient Romans forged copies of Greek sculptures and sold them as originals when Greek art was at its peak of desirability; ancient Greek literature described how to make fake gemstones that look real; and even archaeologists as important as Howard Carter, who discovered King Tut’s

tomb, have been accused of embellishing tattered finds with modern gemstones in order to make them museumworthy. So as you can see, the art of the fake is as old as history itself. Not all copies of paintings were created by forgers trying to make a quick buck (actually, a lot of bucks) on the name of famous artists. Prior to and during the Renaissance period (loosely estimated at $1,350 to $1,600, there’s even controversy about that), art students and art apprentices were required to copy the paintings of famous artists.

Diamonds, Jewelr y, And Other ‘Gems’ At Alder fer Sale When Alderfer Auction Company held its annual Winter Fine & Decorative Arts auction, the two-day event began with fine jewelry. The sale featured many diamond rings including a 2.93-carat diamond ring that proved, once again, that diamonds are a girl’s best friend when it sold for $12,870. The seller inherited the piece but was unsure if it was real because of its ostentatious size. Upon Alderfer ’s evaluation, the seller w a s informed of its authenticity and value, and was happy to convert her inheritance into cash. The men were not left out of the jewelry fun since Alderfers offered many men’s rings and wristwatches in the auction. There was a diamond and ruby 14K gold ring that sold for $8,190, and a 14K yellow gold Mathey Tissot Chronograph wrist-

watch drew a lot of international interest and brought $1,500. T h u r s d a y ’s daylong sale had many popular items like the E.F. Caldwell travel clock that had 320 online views from all over the world including Macau, South Africa, Austria, and Italy and brought $3,300. There was a Tiffany Studios bronze urn form table lamp with glass shade that came in for a weekly estate sale when an Alderfer employee spotted it. After inspecting the piece, the employee found the Tiffany Studios mark on the underside, so the piece was immediately added to the Decorative Arts sale and realized $4,200. A fantastic, boldly carved g i l t French marble top console table and monumental gilt carved mirror made their way north to Alderfers from South Carolina, and brought

strong first step toward determining whether a painting is worth their time and money in calling in an expert or two before sealing the deal. (Obviously, never let the seller provide in the expert!) Only the most determined forgers consider every detail - in the 1930s, Han Van Meergeren made his fortune by forging Vermeers, providing hungry experts and collectors with neverbefore-seen religious paintings they suspected Vermeer had painted during a decadelong period of apparent nonproduction. So exacting was he that he used 17th-century canvasses, painstakingly scraping off the paintings but leaving the original beige

ic study that can take serious forgers years to perfect. And then there’s the psychological angle that they count on. A forger of high-end paintings may target a particular collector or appraiser that he knows is just aching to get his hands on a long-lost discovery or unknown painting by a particular artist - his desire for the piece to be authentic will many times outweigh common sense, gut instinct, and the need for high-tech testing. Couple that with a good story of provenance and possibly some faked authenticity papers, and you’ve got a successful scam. All of these reasons are why important collections from the Louvre to universities contain numerous fakes that are either never discovered or are exposed decades after purchase. The take-away advice from that: never allow desire or the thrill of a find to override gut instinct, common sense, or any small signs of fakery. It’s impossible to say exactly what to look for in every type of faked painting, but there are some general guidelines that don’t require high-tech equipment. Chances are that if you love a particular artist and collect his/her works, then you know the basics: what years the artist worked, what his early works looked like in comparison to later pieces, what types of paintings were being produced at different times during the artist’s career, etc. You’ll even be able to tell the difference between the artist’s spontaneous strokes versus

convincing job, others just give it their best shot and market it to buyers they think aren’t experts - close enough will, many times, serve the purpose and get the painting sold, especially online. But a lot of forged signatures aren’t made with the correct paint, show hesitation marks, or are placed in the wrong spot. This is when it’s particularly important to know the difference between an artist’s actual painting and a painting that was done “in the style or manner of” the artist, because forgers will look for such a painting done by an unknown and then forge the wellknown artist’s signature on it. By using the powers of observation and common sense, buyers can take a

the deliberate lines of a forger. But if you’re simply buying what you like, you may not be as well versed about every artist whose work you admire. There are some forgers who take the easy way out they make or buy an inexpensive print on canvas, then add brush strokes of clear glaze on top to make it appear as if the painting is an original. If the brush strokes don’t match the painting exactly, then obviously you’re not looking at an original painting. There also may be some yellowing of the glaze. Yet another ruse fakers use is to paint over a print so that all the correct brushstrokes are there. However, if you look carefully, you may be able to find a bit of flat, unretouched print in between the brushstrokes. Equally important to the painting itself are the “behind-the-scenes” components: nails and stretchers. The nails should be of the correct era, as should the stretcher wood, and both should both have the proper aging. If an original frame is important to the value of the work, check the edges of the painting - if they’re brighter than the rest of the work, the original frame has been replaced with a narrower one. Compare the painting to a published photo, if one is available - if you see less of the image in the painting you’re examining, then a wider frame was used or the painting was cut down or copied. It’s also helpful to know what frame material the artist used and what style the frame should be. Of course, plenty of scammers try to forge artists’ signatures. Some do a pretty

ground paint, which he incorporated into his forgery (today this can be discovered through x-rays). He even used badger-hair brushes just like Vermeer had, used 17thcentury nails and stretchers (being sure to put the nails back in the same holes), and spent four years concocting a paint that would pass all known tests of the time. He baked the paintings to age them and even devised a system to add the expected cracks of an aged painting. After copying the expected Vermeer style, he added abrasions and damaged the

paintings just enough to make them believable, even faking some slipshod repairs.* No detail was overlooked. Still, eventually his forgeries were discovered due to his use of Bakelite in the paint. The upshot? Know the artist’s style, era, signature, mediums, and subject matter; examine “behind-thescenes” details; and check the piece over carefully, in small segments for any clues that may brand it a forgery. Then call in experts for investment pieces and make sure the piece can be returned if it fools several experts and is only discov-

ered much later. *Hoving, Thomas. False Impressions: The Hunt for Big-time Art Fakes. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1996. Print. All images are forgeries by Han Van Meergeren via Wikipedia. ALDERFER SALE (Continued from page 14)

According to a Worcester porcelain collector in the audience, it was believed that Chamberlain’s son painted the cocker spaniel on the card tray. In all, the collection brought over $20,000, the condition issues of many of the pieces notwithstanding. Two small examples of Guy Wiggins painting and Walter Baum’s hands came back to the mainland after an extended stay in Hawaii,

realizing $2,750 and $3,750 in that order. The two biggest standouts of the day were the Louis C. Tiffany Favrile

paperweight Dandelion vase and the Demeter Chiparus bronze and ivory sculpture entitled “Les Amis de To u j o u r s . ” The vase, which sold for $25,200, was a late addition to the sale from a collector in Atlantic City, New Jersey, who was thrilled that Alderfers could accommodate the consignor and sell it so quickly. There was lively bidding between the floor, internet, and the full bank of phones for the piece. The Chiparus sculpture came from an estate outside the Philadelphia area and

sold for $33,000. Overall, there were 722 registered bidders from 15 countries. Alderfer Auction Company’s next Fine & Decorative Arts auction will be conducted on March 14th and 15th, 2012. The firm is currently accepting consignments for that sale. Contact Brent Souder by phone (215) 3933003 or by e-mail (brent@alderferauction.com) for more information.
