Locati LLC of Maple Glen, Pa., presented its first online sale of 2020 from Jan. 6 to 20. With nearly 300 lots, this sale featured estate jewelry, fine art, furniture, silver and more from various collections and estates from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. “Our January sale had a good selection of material from local collections and estates,” said Michael Locati, co-owner of Locati LLC. “Some pieces of better quality did many times our estimates. This included two micro mosaic plaques that sold for a total of $11,000 and an unusual gold and horn box that sold for over $6,000.”

In border regions, character traits in design can often transfer and be reinterpreted. One glaring exception has been the divergent furniture styles of England and France since the Middle Ages. Prior to the 17th century, when the influence of the Italian Renaissance set the tone for furniture design in much of Europe, a pattern remained consistent even across the English Channel. However, moving into the 17th century, there was a sharp divergence, particularly in French design. English artisans ushered in the Jacobean era (1600-90), largely maintaining Tudor and Gothic elements while incorporating This is an English Essex jug.

subtle changes such as more ornate carving and less massive scaled pieces. In contrast, particularly under the reign of Louis XIV (1638-1715), French artisans began exhibiting opulent designs including the use of exotic woods, gold, marble and fine carvings. Within this transition, we observe a clear example of the English culture mirroring their refined, traditional and steadfast mindset and the French illustrating their flamboyant, complex and trendy culture. Pieces representing the style of both countries are being offered at Winfield Auction Gallery’s Saturday, March 7, sale. One of the crown jewels is a sculpted 17thcentury Jacobean drop-leaf table from the Glastonbury Abbey, England, having deeply carved reserves of biblical scenes. In contrast, also being offered is a rare and most striking French Louis XVI bedroom suite by Francois Linke (1855-1946), the foremost 19th and 20th century Parisian ebeniste of fine Louis XIV, XV and XVI furniture featuring the traditional and more refined elements of the period to include Continued on page 7

This Week: Memory Collecting dated. Historical events singularly do not repeat themselves, and even large patterns do not always follow the same pathways. Rather, I would argue that studying history is about knowing ourselves now through learning from the past. It is to say that we are the product of our generation and our national identity. It is also at a very personal level a reflection of our upbringing and a simple Japanese print hanging on the wall of our house.

One of the things that I think motivates many of us is to collect things that reflect a memory of our childhood. Sometimes it’s a treasure, particularly a toy, which we never owned but wished we did when we were children. The other type of memory collecting is when you see something that was in your parents’ or grandparents’ home but was sold, lost or given to someone else. Two weeks ago, I was playing on eBay looking for some lamps for the house. I had typed in Chinese Deco as my search terms. It’s a broad category, and after much digging, I did find the lamps that I wanted. As I was hunting,

showed me how far the old one faded. A lesson for all of us print collectors. So, with the print in hand, I got interested in the artist. He was a major figure in educating the West about Japanese prints. His works were modern adaptations of traditional subject matter. They were not super valuable or rare, and a wide selection was available online. That did not matter; I started a new collection around this memory piece. Since then, I have amassed a small collection of these prints. They give me pleasure because they transport me visually back to my childhood. They may not turn into a great, or even good, investment. Collecting things that reflect your past is an important part of collecting. It’s also a defining moment for us as lovers of history. I am often asked why history is important to study. The beat-up chestnut that history repeats itself and thus we must study it is really pretty

however, I discovered a print that looked familiar. Swiftwoods was the name of the home that I grew up in and that my grandfather had designed and then had built. Hanging in the front room of the house when I was a boy were several Japanese woodblock prints. The images depicted rural scenes in Japan, both in spring and autumn. Two of the prints are still with me, and the remainder were sold when I closed out my mother’s home. Here on eBay was one of the prints that hung in my childhood home. So of course, I immediately bid on it. It was not something that fit in with my current dÊcor, but rather, it triggered a wonderful memory of holidays as a boy. About 10 days later the print arrived, and I was shocked to see it—not in a bad way, but in realizing that the one that hung in our home, in bright light, for 40 years, had faded badly. The newly acquired antique print was much brighter and

Fifty Years Old Does Not Equal Rare Or Valuable “What’s It Worth” Antique Minute By Mike Ivankovich Contrary to popular belief, just because something is old does not make it valuable. A stone or rock in your backyard might be millions of years old, but it has absolutely zero value, unless, of course, it was Native American, Inca, or part of another highly collectible group. And contrary to popular belief, items that are 50 years old are not necessarily “old” in the world of antiques and collectibles. Actually, that would date them ca. 1969. I was 18 in 1969 and although I don’t consider myself young, I don’t consider myself old either. Many in my generation have held the mistaken belief

that the older something is, the more valuable it is. I can’t tell you how many people during the 1980s and ’90s “invested” in select items, assuming that if they held them for just 15 to 25 years, they could then sell them at a nice profit. Guess what. Millions of others were thinking the same thing. And when they went to sell, they found that the market was flooded with similar items. Here are some common examples. Collector Plates The Bradford Exchange, Danbury Mint, Lenox, and other companies sold millions of plates in the 1980s and ’90s with images of Shirley Temple, Norman Rockwell, John Wayne,

Edna Hibel, The Wizard of Oz, and hundreds of other topics that appealed to my generation. The perception was that because they were “Limited Editions” and had a “Certificate of Authenticity,” we could hold them for 15 to 25 years, and then sell at a nice profit. That never happened because our children had no interest in collecting what we collected, and they were actually mass-produced. Once we had clients who had invested $21,000 in various collector plates as part of their retirement portfolio. I had to explain that they would be lucky to get $500 for those plates in today’s market. Baseball Cards Many pre-1970s baseball cards can still have considerable value. When I was a kid, Topps was pretty much the

only card manufacturer, and my generation ruined our cards using them on bicycles to create a motorcycle sound, or gambling with them playing “Topsies,” “Curbsies,” or other games that damaged the cards. But then in the 1980s, a huge number of card manufacturers got into the act, producing hundreds of millions of cards, and millions of dads started collecting and “investing” in

these sports cards with their sons or daughters. They purchased complete and neveropened sets, expecting to sell them in 15 to 25 years for a nice profit. Unfortunately, millions of other dads were thinking the same thing, and today the market is flooded with way too many such cards. Not a good investment.

Modern Dolls If you’re fortunate enough to have a 1959 first-edition Barbie doll, never-used, in mint and unopened box, you have $5,000-$10,000. But how many girls never played with their Barbies, or saved the original box? Practically none, hence the high price. But while Continued on page 15

Made at the Stony Bluff Manufactory pottery site in Old Edgefield District, S.C., in 1858, the alkaline-glazed vessel is signed, dated, and inscribed by Drake. There are currently approximately 40 known “poem vessels” signed or attributed to him. “This acquisition celebrates the importance of David Drake and his creation of extraordinary, impressive, poetic objects. This vessel is truly transformative for our collection, as it will enable us to present a more nuanced and complex narrative not only of the Edgefield stoneware industry and the contributions of the enslaved potters, but of slavery in the American South,” said Max Hollein, director of the Met. “Drake’s masterwork is the

kind of powerful object that helps us reckon with America’s complicated past in truthful and inclusive ways,” commented Sylvia Yount, the Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator-inCharge of the American Wing. “David Drake was the only literate enslaved African American potter with a known body of work in this country. This remarkable jar, which bears a date, signature, and an original four-line verse by

Drake, was made a few years before the Civil War, during a time when it was illegal for enslaved African Americans to read or write. Signing and inscribing the jug was both a bold act of creativity and a

declaration of authorship on Drake’s part,” noted Adrienne Spinozzi, assistant research curator of Decorative Arts in the American Wing, who is currently organizing an exhibition on this material. Vast quantities of utilitarian vessels, such as bowls, crocks, jugs, jars, pitchers, and churns, were made in Edgefield, S.C., the center of the 19th-century alkaline-glazed stoneware industry in the American South. Drake wares stand apart due to their monumental size and textual embellishments. The Met’s example measures just over 22.5 inches (57.5 cm) in height, with a capacity of about 25 gallons (94.6 liters). The large size and graceful form of the storage jug reveal the artist’s strength and dexterity as a potter and his exceptional facility with stoneware. The inscription reads: “this jar is to Mr Segler who keeps

David Drake (ca. 1801–70s) of the Stony Bluff Manufactory (Edgefield District, S.C.) made this storage jar, dated 1858, alkaline-glazed stoneware, 22 5/8 inches high, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, purchase, Ronald S. Kane Bequest, in memory of Berry B. Tracy, 2020. Selections from the Goldbergs’ noted American stoneware collection were exhibited at the Met in 1985. Examples of Drake’s poem vessels can also be found at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Smithsonian Institution; High Museum of Art; and the

Charleston Museum, among others. Currently on view in the American Wing’s “Civil War and Reconstruction Eras and Legacies” gallery (Gallery 762), the vessel will be featured in the Met’s upcoming exhibition on Edgefield stoneware, scheduled for early 2022.

The verse, the longest known poem by this potter, serves as a portal into Drake’s 19th-century milieu. Notably, some of the individuals and places inscribed on the jar have been identified, and the vessel’s utilitarian purpose clearly stated, to fill with pork or beef, a reference to the likely intended use for food storage on a plantation. This important example of Drake’s work comes from the private collection of Dr. Arthur and Esther Goldberg, longtime supporters of the American Wing. Funding for the purchase was provided by the estate of Ronald Kane.

Rare “Star Wars” Darth Vader Action-Figure Variation Among Items To Lead All-Star Lineup At Hake’s Auction Pop Culture Memorabilia Sale To Be Held March 11 And 12 outstanding example of original comic book art, page 27 for Marvel Comics’ August 1977 “Star Wars #2” brings together many franchise favorites in a pivotal scene, including Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and C-3PO. Drawn by Howard Chaykin and inked by Steve Leialoha, the artwork carries a $10,000-$20,000 estimate. With a history of one blockbuster result after another for ultra-rare “Star Wars” action figures, Hake’s has still more surprises in store, starting with a doubletelescoping Darth Vader 12 Back-A, AFA graded 75 Ex+/NM. “What sets this very early example apart from any other Vader we have sold is that the card is unpunched,

and, significantly, it comes packaged with a white cardboard stand beneath the figure’s feet. Only a prototype could pre-date this one,” said Winter. Accompanied by a notarized CIB LOA, its auction estimate is $75,000$100,000. Leading the group, a September/October 1956 issue of Showcase #4 in 8.0 VF condition is historically important because it contains the origin story and first appearance of the Silver Age “Flash,” one of several superheroes DC reinvented in the post-WWII era. “According to the CGC census, there are only 494 certified copies of this issue worldwide, and only 12 have a higher grade than the one in our sale. It’s a gem, and we think collectors will be fighting for it,” said Winter. High-end treasures await “Star Wars” fans, as well. An

Knowledgeable collectors will jump at the chance to own the original art for a published Imps Sunday strip.” Winsor McCay’s talent was admired on both sides of the Atlantic by his fellow cartoonists, including the renowned French poster artist R. In 1911, Hem created a vibrant poster to promote the short “Little Nemo,” with a French heading that translates to “Winsor McCay – The Latest in Cartoons.” It colorfully depicts McCay at his desk, surrounded by paints, brushes, drawings of his famous characters, and an inset depiction that pertains directly to the cartoon short.
