Elverson Show Enters 50th Year Quality Antiques Show Slated For March 23 And 24 At Twin Valley High School In Elverson, Pa. FRIDAY MARCH 8, 2019 • VOL. 50, NO. 10

Thrown, Fired, And Glazed: The Redware Tradition From Pennsylvania And Beyond Major Redware Pottery Exhibit Opens On Charter Day At Landis Valley Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum in Lancaster, Pa., has announced its landmark new two-year exhibit, “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Tradition from Pennsylvania and Beyond,” opening Sunday, March 10. Half of the exhibit will be installed in 2019, and the other half in 2020. Focusing on Pennsylvania redware, the installation draws from a variety of collections to take visitors on a historical transatlantic tour of this unique form of pottery. “Throughout the exhibit’s duration, we will show about 150 redware pieces each year,” says Jennifer Royer, curator at the museum. “Many pieces are never seen by the public and come from both private collections, our own collection, and the collections of other public

The 100th edition of the Elverson Antique Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, at the Twin Valley High School, located at 4897 North Twin Valley Road, Elverson, Pa. Show hours on Saturday will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $7, or $6, with a show card or ad. Located in Chester County, this high-quality show draws dealers and collectors from throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and beyond. It is within easy driving

distance from Philadelphia, just off Exit 298 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike I-76, just east of Adamstown. Held twice a year, the popular show is now in its 50th year. Originally started as a fundraiser for the Elverson Fire Company, today the show benefits the girl’s lacrosse team at the high school. Team members and supporters work as porters, help with set-up, and run the food stand. A true team effort goes on between the dealers and the high school students to produce a quality antique show, and visitors won’t be disappointed. Situated high on a hill overlooking the countryside, the Elverson show reflects the rich heritage of the area and does a good job appealing to a wide array of

institutions, such as the Barnes Foundation, Winterthur, and the Hershey Museum.” While highlighting differences between Northern and Southern United States and European styles, it will focus on Pennsylvania and its German community, covering archaeological pieces, traditional work, the creation of redware, and the revival of the artform. Visitors will wander among slipware, decorated in streams of colored clay, and sgraffito pottery, which have designs scratched out of a colored film of watereddown clay applied to the top of the piece. Some are monochrome, and some are colored with oxides under a clear lead glaze: copper for green, iron for brown, cobalt for blue, and manganese for purple or blackish brown. The personalities and colloquial language of the individual potters are also captured within the glaze, as some inscribed dedications, names, dates, and words of wisdom on their wares in both German and English. Though the purpose of the exhibit is to convey the art form’s history, many of the pieces have a story of their own and are worth appreciating. Continued on page 2

By Karl Pass The work “Abstract or Abridgment of the Laws Made and Past by William Penn” printed in 1701, sold for $9,500 at Boltz Auction Company on Feb. 4. Dealing with proprietary governance among other matters concerning William Penn, the book was printed by Dutch-born printer Reinier Jansen in Philadelphia. The Boltz sale was conducted online and live at the company’s 3601 Columbia Ave. facility in Lancaster, Pa. Other items sold, but not pictured, included a Remington revolver (1858), selling for $900; a 1864 U.S. Springfield with scabbard, $625; a WWII German dagger, $350; an ivory handled sword, $225; a 1862 U.S. sword with sheath, $200; and a group of 10 ambrotypes for
