Elverson Show Enters 50th Year Quality Antiques Show Slated For March 23 And 24 At Twin Valley High School In Elverson, Pa. FRIDAY MARCH 8, 2019 • VOL. 50, NO. 10
Thrown, Fired, And Glazed: The Redware Tradition From Pennsylvania And Beyond Major Redware Pottery Exhibit Opens On Charter Day At Landis Valley Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum in Lancaster, Pa., has announced its landmark new two-year exhibit, “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Tradition from Pennsylvania and Beyond,” opening Sunday, March 10. Half of the exhibit will be installed in 2019, and the other half in 2020. Focusing on Pennsylvania redware, the installation draws from a variety of collections to take visitors on a historical transatlantic tour of this unique form of pottery. “Throughout the exhibit’s duration, we will show about 150 redware pieces each year,” says Jennifer Royer, curator at the museum. “Many pieces are never seen by the public and come from both private collections, our own collection, and the collections of other public
The 100th edition of the Elverson Antique Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, at the Twin Valley High School, located at 4897 North Twin Valley Road, Elverson, Pa. Show hours on Saturday will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $7, or $6, with a show card or ad. distance from Philadelphia, just off Exit 298 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike I-76, just east of Adamstown. Held twice a year, the popular show is now in its 50th year. Originally started as a fundraiser for the Elverson Fire Company, today the show benefits the girl’s lacrosse team at the high school. Team members and supporters work as porters, help with set-up, and run the food stand. A true team effort goes on between the dealers and the high school students to produce a quality antique show, and visitors won’t be disappointed. Situated high on a hill overlooking the countryside, the Elverson show reflects the rich heritage of the area and does a good job appealing to a wide array of

institutions, such as the Barnes Foundation, Winterthur, and the Hershey Museum.” While highlighting differences between Northern and Southern United States and European styles, it will focus on Pennsylvania and its German community, covering archaeological pieces, traditional work, the creation of redware, and the revival of the artform. Visitors will wander among slipware, decorated in streams of colored clay, and sgraffito pottery, which have designs scratched out of a colored film of watereddown clay applied to the top of the piece. Some are monochrome, and some are colored with oxides under a clear lead glaze: copper for green, iron for brown, cobalt for blue, and manganese for purple or blackish brown. The personalities and colloquial language of the individual potters are also captured within the glaze, as some inscribed dedications, names, dates, and words of wisdom on their wares in both German and English. Though the purpose of the exhibit is to convey the art form’s history, many of the pieces have a story of their own and are worth appreciating. Continued on page 2

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum Elverson Show One is an early 19th-century Snow Hill Nunnery slip-decorated redware soup bowl, attributed to the Bell Pottery of Waynesboro, Pa., and highly valued by collectors today. The bowl was used during love feasts (tight-knit cloisters such as the ones in Snow Hill and Ephrata would serve stew in bowls such as this during the ceremonial communal meals). John Bell, eldest of three brothers who followed their father’s German pottery traditions in their own shops, also learned English pottery techniques and combined them to create a P e n n s y l v a n i a German/American style. His primarily utilitarian pieces emulated luxurious wares but were inexpensive to buy. He invented glazes that imitated the brown, mottled looks of Rockingham, mocha, spatterware, and Bennington pieces. The John Bell Pottery operated for 63 years, and it is estimated that the shop produced more than 800,000 pots, making it a significant contribution to American folk art. Two John Bell pieces, along with artifacts made in Strasburg, Va., by his brothers, Samuel and Solomon, and some of his tools will be on display. The first half of the exhibit will open on Sunday, March 10, and will end on Dec. 31.
The second half will open on March 8, 2020, and be on display until Dec. 31, 2020. The exhibit openings coincide with the museum’s Charter Day event, a day of free admission to Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites. The event begins at noon and ends at 5 p.m. and will feature wagon rides and historic craft and trade demonstrations.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Antiques In Wyoming And Montana to say that I am always careful to pick hats that are clean. The history of the West is in the cowboy hat. Hunting for great and classic designs is truly a blast, and the chance for finding a great treasure is far more prevalent than most would admit. I have a favorite Tom Mix hat that was a bargain. For collectors of china and glass, the West is loaded. I think all those folks of my grandmother’s generation who loved ceramics and glass of any type came West. I see so many really cool items that it is hard to restrain me from taking it all home. Finally, one thing that still is common here are old time stores that still have original

I have to confess to being totally gobsmacked by the wonderful antiques that I have found here. As a collector who suffered the pains of collecting withdrawal when we lived in New Mexico, I have been so pleasantly surprised by what I have found here. Here in the north, it is really a collector’s haven of wonderful treasures.
newly caned Victorian hip huggers at $35 a chair. For me, the cool items are the relics of the American West. The other week, I wandered into a shop, and there was a barrel of branding irons. Each of these irons was handmade by a local blacksmith and incorporated a design unique to a particular ranch. They are wonderful mementos of the West, and because they are so common out here, they sell for usually under $25. We purchased a metal coat tree and are using it to display our collection. Another favorite item for me to look for is cowboy hats. Okay, so for folks who see this as a great chance to get hair lice, I have no defense except

First and foremost, collecting out West is different than in the East. Obviously, there is not the abundance of early items as one might find in New England or Pennsylvania, but when it does appear, it is usually highly undervalued. The peak periods of treasures to be found are really from the late 19th century to the modern era. What surprises me is that the pricing in this area is very reasonable. I recently saw a set of three Saarinen chairs under $500, a good price despite being down by one chair. Similarly, a very high style late Victorian Gothic Revival side chair at $68 was a bargain. I just passed on a set of eight
display materials. I don’t collect these myself but have appreciated store cases and signs from the 1890-1940 period immensely. I have never seen so many as out here and priced the way they were decades ago. So yes, this is an invitation to explore the American heartland. See the Great West, and check out some of the wonderful antique shops that are in Wyoming and Montana.

Bertoia’s Big Signature Sale To Take Place March 9 And 10 Special Highlight Will Be The Lifetime Penny Toy Collection Of Michael Bertoia How does an auction house match a sale like the one Bertoia’s held last September, with its blockbuster lineup of pristine early American clockwork toys, rare French Martin toys and still banks from long-held collections? The answer is, by offering more of the same. On Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10, Bertoia Auctions will present its 700-lot Spring Signature Sale showcasing Part II of Frank Mohr’s incomparable 60-year collection of Fernand Martin and early American tin and clockwork toys, as well as Part II of the superb 40-year still bank collection of Douglas Jackman. In addition, the auction lineup features the revered multigeneration estate collection of Sam Downey Jr. and approximately 100 rare and exceptional penny toys from the Michael Bertoia collection. “We think this is going to be one of those auctions that collectors will remember for a long time,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner, Jeanne Bertoia. “Toy collectors never forget where their favorite pieces came from, and each one usually comes with a story. Years from now, collectors will look at their toys with provenance from the great collections in this sale and remember every detail about when and how they acquired them.” The Bertoia family is honored to bring to the toy community the collection of Sam Downey, a beloved lifelong student and collector of fine toys who passed away last November. Downey Jr. followed in the footsteps of his father, Samuel Downey Sr., whose own collection focused on live steam. “Much of Sam Sr.’s collection was passed down to Sam Jr. Both collections have the same style and feel, so they blended together seamlessly,” said Bertoia Auctions president and auctioneer Michael Bertoia. “Sam’s father was a true collector,” Michael continued. “He liked the go-alongs. For example, in addition to trains and boats, he had wall art, cigarette lighters from ships’ bars and train cars, a New York Central lantern, a themed collection of cigar clippers, and other interesting accessory items.” The Downey Jr. collection shows significant diversity, but
at its core is turn-of-the-century tin. “Sam had an affinity for toys representing speed,” said Michael, noting the large number of automotive and motorcycle toys, including several Gordon Bennett racers and a Gunthermann Gordon Bennetttype racing motorcycle. There are Marklin aeronautical toys, zeppelins, airplanes, and steam toys, including a large Doll et Cie., Ferris wheel and roller coaster. A sizable grouping of submergible tin divers suitable for play in a pond or bathtub is joined by an Ernst Plank clockwork torpedo boat that Michael says he has only ever seen in a book written by Dick Claus. The Downey flotilla consisted primarily of military boats, approximately 50 percent live steam and 50 percent clockwork, by such coveted makers as Marklin, Bing and Radiguet. A standout in the marine category, as well as in the sale overall, is a 46inch battery-powered ocean liner “August Victoria” made by Marklin around 1910. Its provenance includes the Malcolm Forbes collection. The Downey collection contains a treasure trove of wonderful American and European trains and accessories. Highlights from the American section include examples of 2-inch-gauge Carlisle & Finch trains (some of which came from Sam Sr.’s collection) and Voltamp productions, such as an “Interurban Trolley.” “While packing up, we kept finding one treasure after another, and many rare original boxes,” Michael said. “Sam had an extensive European collection of Marklin 0, 1 and 2 gauge, live steam, clockwork, European and American outline trains. Within the Marklin train cars there are American Eagle cars in 1, 2 and 0 gauge. When a collector has a set of these cars in any gauge, it’s considered quite an accomplishment, and he had them all. There are also obscure trains by Ernst Plank and Schoenner, in 3 and 4 gauge.” A large, near-mint Doll et Cie., steam plant is one of many European steam engines in the collection, which also includes Marklin, Bing and Schoenner productions. Additionally, Michael said, the sale includes “more 19th-century hot air engines than
The rare Vichy (French) “Lady Playing Piano” musical automaton will be estimated at $6,000-$9,000.
Marklin’s largest boat was the ocean liner “Augusta Victoria” and was made from 1909-15, 45 inches long. This one, ex. Malcolm Forbes collection, will be estimated at $50,000-$80,000. Bertoia’s has ever handled at one time.” All are premier brands, e.g., Marklin and Bing. Train enthusiasts love their accessories, and they’re going to find that Sam Downey Jr. owned some of the most coveted of all lampposts and stations, including a Marklin Café station. The extensive specialty sub-collection of steam accessories is distinguished by its near-mint Bing brewery and distillery examples. The second marquee collection in the sale is that of Douglas Jackman, a New England dealer in Rockingham, Vt. Jackman vigilantly scoured high-end Americana and general antiques shows for rare banks throughout his 40-year collecting odyssey. More than 100 banks from Jackman’s collection were chosen for this auction, with condition and rarity as the guidelines. Worthy of special note are the “God Is Love” (or “Cross”) bank, the “Chancellor” bank, and the “Lilliput” bank, which is an uncommon variation of the better-known “Lilliput” mechanical bank. The 60-year Frank Mohr collection, which Jeanne Bertoia described as “one of the all-time greats,” is focused on toys that are mechanical or have some sort of movement. In particular, Mohr enjoys the whimsy of antique French toys by Fernand Martin, and because he has collected for so long, he has managed to acquire some of the finest, most elusive characters from
the Martin range. The two-day sale includes five Martin soldiers, including a boxed “South African,” boxed “Chinese Warrior,” and a “Bulgarian” troop. The list continues with a boxed woman in a fancy winter outfit, a roller skater, a boxed jockey carrying the “Mona Lisa” under his arm, and from the rubber-banddriven first series, “Les Pompiers” (two men at a water pump) with original box, and “Sword Fight.” Frank Mohr also amassed an exceptional collection of antique automata. The auction selection includes Vichy productions, including a schoolgirl and a lady playing the piano, plus Leopold Lambert’s elegantly dressed smoker with a Jumeau head. The second half of Mohr’s early American tin and clockwork toy collection features several Ives platform toys, including the rare “Boxers” and a boy on horsehead velocipede, as well as an exceptional Althof Bergmann Santa Claus sleigh, which is one of only about a half dozen known to exist. Also in the mix are George Brown and Althof Bergman toys of various types, horse-drawn fire pumpers to a “Mary and Two Lambs” platform toy. The much-anticipated debut of the Michael Bertoia lifetime collection of penny toys will roll out approximately 100 mini toys from many popular categories. Themes include aeronautical, motorcycles, candy containers and articulated novelties. Three of Michael’s favorites are the elf
riding on an egg with an emerging bunny, a little boy in rocking chair holding a bunny, and a clown with dancing poodle. Among the super-rare penny toy money boxes are two circus cages, one housing tigers, the other, lions. One of the candy container penny toys is very special and rare, according to Michael. Designed to replicate a vending machine, it is colorfully lithographed on the tower with images of gnomes. When a lever is pushed, a sweet is dispensed. “I refined my collection over many years and can truthfully say that the buyers of my penny toys will never have to upgrade. I’m very proud to put my name behind each toy and hope they’ll bring as much pleasure to their new owners as they brought to me,” said Michael. All forms of bidding will be available, including absentee, phone or live via the internet through Bertoia Live or LiveAuctioneers.com.
This “Crown” cast-iron bank with tower feature and stand resting on four legs will be estimated at $1,500-$2,500. Bertoia Auctions is located at 2141 Demarco Drive, in Vineland, N.J. deal. A good level of business was had by a high number of dealers at the show. There were 88 exhibiting dealers. The show, when full, has 96. Of course, many reported just okay results, especially after costs were calculated, but a respectable number had good sales, a positive sign as we charge forward into 2019, a decade removed from an economic recession that had far reaching effects. Regardless of the means of a buyer, or how wealthy they may be, price point still dicates success, especially today. This was apparent for many dealers. “I lowered a lot of prices, and it was noticed,” commented one exhibitor.
