Hakes’s Americana Begins 50th Year Celebration First In Series Of Exceptional Pop Culture Auctions Set For March 14, 15, And 16 Looking back on the year 1967, some might say that it was, paradoxically, a time of peace, love and war. Lyndon B. Johnson was president, 475,000 U.S. troops were fighting in Vietnam, and the Beatles unveiled their immortal Sgt. Pepper’s LP. Today, collectors clamor for mementos related to those historical people and events, and fortunately they’re able to find them because of another highlight of 1967. It was during that year, half a century ago, that visionary political ephemera collector Ted Hake founded his pop-culture collectibles business. Dubbed “Hake’s Americana,” the company has since become a globally renowned auction house whose sales embrace over 200 popular collecting categories. To celebrate its 2017 golden jubilee year, Hake’s Americana will conduct three major online auctions,

As a nod to Hake’s roots, Auction #220 will feature 500plus lots of important political memorabilia. Two of the top items are a framed 36-star Grant and Colfax campaign parade flag from 1868, estimate $5,000-$10,000, and an exceedingly rare 1896 William McKinley poster publicizing a “Republican Barbecue at Greenfield, Ind.” One of only two examples known to Hake’s, the Continued on page 2

The 1896 William McKinley “Republican Barbecue at Greenfield, Ind.” poster, 26.5by-39.5 inches, one of only two such examples known to Hake’s, is estimated at $2,000-$5,000.

Peeks of Spring will start making appearances, and the “hazy shade of winter,” as Paul Simon coined it, will be heading back into hibernation for another year. What better time to “go green.” In anticipation of the warmer months, the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., is celebrating the color and the season this month in their special display. Although “going green” may bring to mind thoughts of environmental awareness, it has many connotations. However, visions of leprechauns, fourleaf clovers, and Easter baskets filled with eggs, baby chicks, and rabbits all make this a featured hue in both decorations and celebrations. For collectors of green glass or just fans of the fresh and vibrant tone, the Grist Mill has plenty of items to choose from when updating seasonal home décor or expanding collections. Whether the cool minty tint of Jadite, the festive chartreuse of Vaseline Glass, the celadon of Depression Glass, or the verdant emerald often used by many famous pottery manufacturers, the store has just about any shade and style to fit into any design. This month’s display features something for every taste. For the gardener, there is a lovely selection of vintage flora and fauna, flower frogs, gardening implements and objet d’art from Westmoreland, McCoy, Roseville, Hall and Shawnee. For those celebrating seasonal festivities, there is Belleek china, dolls and Royal Doulton figurines depicting Irish lasses, shamrocks and

Celtic-inspired jewelry. There’s always something going on at the Grist Mill Antiques Center. On Wednesday, March 29, beginning at 5 p.m., the store will hold a scavenger hunt, with a prize going to the person who finds the most items on a list. Light refreshments will be served. Sign up for the weekly emails to find out about special sales and events. There is a 20 percent discount on all items $6 and

over and 25 percent off items in a special category every week. Some exclusions apply. On Sunday, April 23, the Grist Mill will be holding their semiannual flea market from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be bargains galore. Dealers from both the Grist Mill Antiques Center and the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will be participating. Come out for a day of treasure hunting, food and fun. A limited number of spaces are still available for vendors. To learn more, call Barbara Lind at 609-726-1588. This multi-dealer shop is located at 127 Hanover St. and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. How Did The 21-Gun Salute Originate? “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute

By Mike Ivankovich Did you ever wonder how the 21-gun salute originated? The 21-gun salute is a tradition often used at military and law enforcement funerals where seven rifles each fire three blanks, for a “21-gun salute.” But gun salutes have been used by many different countries, in many different formats, for centuries. So why “21 guns” for the United States and not “20” or “22”? One theory has it that shortly after the founding of our country in 1776, someone realized that the four numbers in “1776” together … 1 + 7 + 7 + 6 … add up to “21.” The “21-gun salute” was recommended as a tribute to the year the nation was founded, and it’s been a U.S. tradition ever since.

March Comes In Like A Lion At The Emporium March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb is an old, common Pennsylvania saying. In Wales, this proverb is applied to the month of April more than March, and in the 19th century it was used as a weather prediction contingent on a year’s early March weather. All these proverbs and predictions were recognized to not always ring true. Sometimes the reverse occurs: March will come in like a lamb and go out like a lion. The prediction of the weather can be tricky business.

Spring is just around the corner, and I have to confess that I have a healthy dose of Spring Fever. Between the snows and gray of winter and some bouts of Noro and the flu, I am ready to get into my garden. While the soil is just starting to be ready to be worked, I am digging into my gardening books. With a new house, I am looking forward to redoing the gardens. As someone who loves historic gardening, I am digging into 19th century gardening

on do-it-yourself landscaping but on the kind of scale that today would be difficult to accomplish. This evening, I am looking at the planning guide for an English perennial border and starting to dream about what I want to do. The choice of plants is limited, reflecting what was available at the time, but it is a wonderful book for dreamers. The third book is one that my mother got as a gift from her college roommate back in 1974. Thalassa Cruso’s “To Everything There Is a Season: The Gardening Year is a trip to the country garden. Cruso’s writing is excellent, and her insights very Edwardian. One of my favorite sections is where she talks about buying

books to think about what I am going to be doing. Antique gardening books are wonderful evening entertainment. Last year, at a Virginia used bookshop, I purchased a copy of Thomas Bridgeman’s “The Young Gardener’s Assistant, published in New York in 1857. Like many Victorian garden books, it is a book that presumes knowledge of both Botany and Latin to understand. The advice, however, is as sage today as it was 150 years ago. February is the time to prune fruit trees, to clean up yard waste, but, of course, not get carried away with the few warm days that arrive. It is a fun book to read and has wonderful advice. A second garden book that stood on my grandparent’s bookshelf is Roy E. Biles’ “The Complete Book of Garden Magic, printed in 1943. This is a book that I read as a boy until their copy was almost destroyed. It reflects the focus

A scarce, privately printed work by Mark Twain fetched $4,062 at National Book Auctions’s Feb. 4 sale. Only four other copies of this volume have sold at auction over the last four decades. The volume was number five of 100 copies of Twain’s “1601 published by the Derrydale Press in New York in 1926. Bearing the long-winded subtitle, “Being a Fireside Conversation in ye Tyme of ye Goode Queene Bess in Which Divers Persons of Reknown Hold Converse on Concerns Personal and Intimate, this satirical squib is purported to be an extract from the diary from one of Queen Elizabeth’s ladies-in-waiting. Due to its scatological content, “1601 was considered unprintable by mainstream publishers prior to the 1960s and was circulated clandestinely in privately printed limited editions such as this. The sale, held at the auction house’s Freeville, N.Y., saleroom and simulcast via Invaluable, also featured a sizeable private library of decorative antique leather bindings; sets of note included “Naturalis Historiae Libri XXXVII by Pliny the Elder (1685), “The Posthumous Works of Frederic II King of Prussia translated by Thomas Holcroft (1789), and “Novels of George Eliot collected by William Blackwood (c. 1890). Other lots included antique billheads, magazine compilations, and books and correspondence from the estate of a colleague and purported muse and mistress of “Lolita

RSL To Feature James A. Rocheleau Collection Of Still And Mechanical Banks Top-Notch European And Early American Toys Also In March 18 And 19 Auction owned and operated Rally Building, a Detroit-based company he founded in the 1970s. “Until the time of his passing last April, Jim was a very active bank collector and, for many years, a good personal friend of mine. It was obvious that he took pride in each new acquisition,” said RSL partner Ray Haradin. “Jim was first and foremost a condition buyer. Two of his mentors were Greg Zemenick and Donal Markey, who famously insisted on pristine condition and nothing less. Many of Jim’s banks came to him through Greg and Donal. That, in itself, speaks to the level of condition in his collection. Especially in the still-bank realm, there can be no question that Jim owned some of the finest known examples.”

Here are examples from a single-owner collection of European penny toys.

The Jim Rocheleau collection boasts many near-mint painted architectural still banks.

Banks in the Rocheleau collection that were not acquired through Zemenick and Markey sometimes came as a result of discoveries from vacated homes. In the course of their day-to-day work, Rocheleau’s crews were tasked with clearing out foreclosed houses for Detroit banking institutions. Rocheleau made sure that any antiques or items of historical importance were retained. “Of the many ways he sourced banks, Jim especially loved acquiring a bank directly from the original family that owned it. He also enjoyed collecting Detroit memorabilia A Chanticleer still bank, circa 1911, A good example of Shepard and Tiffany lamps. example of the rooster Chanticleer from the fable “Chanticleer and the Fox,” a polychrome version of “The Recruit,” a “Home” bank, and

a “State” bank painted in blue with red and yellow trim. There are also several very desirable “Mulligan the Cop” still banks, each displaying a different advertising message. According to Haradin, there are approximately 20 known variations of the “Mulligan the Cop” bank, each promoting a different clothier, hardware store or other

business establishment. Mechanicals will include an exceptional J. & E. Stevens “Dentist” bank; one of the nicest of all known Shepard Hardware “Trick Dog” banks, with original box; and a bluedress version of Stevens’ “Speaking Dog” bank. “Jim’s mechanical banks aren’t necessarily the rarest banks, but Continued on page 11
